Dorothy A Gilmartin - February 25, 1924 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Broad Channel)
Obituary Preview: Mom was born February 25, 1924. Dorothy, the fourth girl of six children born to Michael Moran and Delia Coyne Moran. Mom grew up in a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Children’s Museum happily surrounded by her comfortably large family.
At a young age, Dorothy lost her father, Michael Moran, in a drowning accident. Michael was a NYC Police Officer who had dreams and ambitions for his family. Fortunately, Michael and Delia, both Irish immigrants, had already secured a good foundation for the family’s future enabling them to survive the Great Depression. Our grandmother, Delia, persevered raising six children: Mary, Florence, Irene, Dorothy, Ethel and James.
Dorothy attended grade school in St. Gregory’s Parish. Dorothy was a “Bishop’s Girl” attending and graduating from Bishop McDonnell High School for Girls. After graduation, Dorothy went to work at Appleton & Cox Insurance Company located in lower Manhattan..
Dorothy met her husband, Bernard (Bernie) Gilmartin through mutual friends. This chance meeting resulted in a case in which two brothers Bernard and Hubert married two sisters Florence and Dorothy. Dorothy and Bernie were married in May of 1947 and moved to Broad Channel in 1950 where they raised five children: Robert, James, Lee, Gregg and Joan. Residing in Broad Channel afforded Dorothy the pleasure of living near her sister and best friend growing up, Ethel Geier. Mom really liked having people, family, and friends near and dear, all her life. She said having grown up in a big family that she could never live alone. We supported her in that. Dorothy was a joy. She was gentle but firm with the just right kind of correction or constructive criticism balanced by generous amounts of support and encouragement.
Dorothy will be missed by her children as well as her two grandchildren, Kerry and Brian, whom she helped raise.
Our family and most everyone she met loved our Mom. It is very hard to say goodbye to someone like that, especially when it’s your mom. Dorothy is now in heaven with those who have gone before her. We will never stop missing her. Dorothy was the best mom ever! GOD SPEED DOROTHY

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and provide a visual representation of the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

Contact the publication directly to find out their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Some publications may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most publications charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want it to be.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details about the person's life that you'd rather not share publicly, it's best to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that an obituary is meant to be a celebration of their life, not an exposé.

How long after the person's passing should I publish the obituary?

The timing varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Typically, an obituary is published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.
