Obituary Preview: Nancy Lee Csurbak, 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2024 surrounded by the love of her friends and family following a long, courageous fight with cancer. After 17 years in the ring, she decided it was finally time to take off her gloves.
Born to Steve and Terry Csurbak, Nancy was raised in Englishtown, NJ. Some of her fondest childhood memories included growing up next door to her grandmother, uncle, aunt and beloved cousins, family camping trips, big backyard parties, fishing, swimming, cooking, and most importantly, being the baby of her family. Becoming an aunt at just 11 years old was one of Nancy’s proudest moments, and she continued to beam with happiness with the addition of each niece and nephew, and their children to follow.
A graduate of Georgian Court University, Lakewood, Nancy’s career as an educator began at Saint Stan’s, Sayreville, Saint Mary’s, South Amboy and Immaculate Conception School, Spotswood. She made her way back to her alma mater, St. John Vianney Regional High School, Holmdel, where she found so much joy not only in her time teaching, but also in various clubs and activities, most notably, Covenant House and the Lenten program “Soup and Scripture.” Nancy was also lucky enough to forge many lifelong and cherished friendships at SJV both as a student and educator.
However great her passion for teaching, there was no greater love for Nancy than her family. Her children and grandchildren were her life. From trips to the park or boardwalk, family meals, late night card games, commuter phone calls, and grandbaby sleepovers, she lived for those moments.
Nancy was predeceased by her father, Stephen W. Csurbak, Jr.; a brother, Stephen “Butch” Csurbak III; and two sisters, Sandra Steinitz and Theresa Tedesco.

Dr. Lathel Flay "Duff" Duffield - December 01, 1931 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Freehold)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Lathel Flay “Duff” Duffield passed away on March 21, 2024. He was 92 years old.
Duff was the 12th child of William and Grace Duffield, who lived in rural Oklahoma. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school. His mother urged him to “get an education because he didn’t want to be a ditch digger.” He went on to receive his Bachelors in Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma, his Masters in Anthropology from the University of Texas - Austin, and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He always said that you were an anthropologist first and an archeologist second and, despite his mother’s admonitions, he grew up to dig different kinds of ditches.
He started his career as an Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky (UK) where he taught cultural anthropology to both undergraduates and graduate students. Over a couple of decades at UK, he was also the Anthropological Museum director, chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, and State Archeologist.
He left the UK to take a position in the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Acknowledgement branch in Washington D.C. At that time, groups would petition the Federal Government to be recognized as American Indian tribes. Duff would conduct anthropological research, genealogical research, and historical research to determine if the group was a tribe and make recommendations to the Federal Government. At times, he was required to testify on his findings on Capitol Hill.
Duff is survived by four daughters: Camilla Lynn Duffield (Marietta GA), Megan Naylor (Lexington KY), Leslie Ann Sullivan (Louisville KY), and Kelly Rizer (Lexington KY); six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his long-term committed domestic partner, Jim Hutchinson (West Windsor NJ).
A memorial service will be held at a later time.

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Freehold)
Obituary Preview: Beverly Peril Stern was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Dr Hyman and Rae Peril, and moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania early in her childhood. A life-long learner and reader, she attended Lycoming College before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In her beloved Philadelphia, she met her husband Joel Stern at the Temple University Dental Clinic. They were married immediately after graduation in 1961 and began a two-year Army service in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Son Hal was born while in the Army and daughter Amy when the family returned to Joel’s native Freehold, New Jersey.
Bev was an active and visible member of the greater Freehold area, from AAUW and Temple Shaari Emeth boards to her 29-year career as the school nurse at West Freehold School, including 25 years as the Head Nurse of the Freehold Township school system. She implemented school health care policies and procedures that became the reference standards in New Jersey and passionately represented the teacher’s union in negotiations for healthcare benefits. Upon retiring from West Freehold School, Bev started her second career as Executive Director of the New Jersey State School Nurses Association and additionally shared her wisdom with other school districts in the Mid-Atlantic region as a nurse educator.
Everyone called “Nurse Bev” to be their confidante, counselor, supporter, and advocate for mental and physical well-being.
Bev’s true passion was her family. She enthusiastically attended every marching band show, concert, recital, musical production, dance competition, hockey or football game and marathon featuring her husband, children, or grandchildren. She was inclusive in her views of religion and culture and believed that celebrating friends’ holidays amplified her own family’s traditions. Her holiday meals were legendary, and her recipe for “Mom Stern’s Noodle Kugel” was one of the first pieces of content to go viral on the early Internet.
After moving to Applewood, Bev took on editorial responsibilities for the in-house newsletter and was proud to run the Employee Appreciation Fundraiser each year, continuing her strong support of first line workers in all aspects of her life.
