Obituary Preview: Mrs. Sue A. Long, 84, of LaGrange, passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, at Florence Hand Home.
Mrs. Long was born December 16, 1939, in Bowden, daughter of the late J.W. Ayers and Hazel G. Ayers. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange. Mrs. Long was employed at LaGrange Daily News and retired after 23 years as Advertising Director. She was a volunteer with the Pink Ladies, a division of the West Georgia Medical Center Ladies’ Auxiliary. In her service as a Pink Lady, she was at the front desk the day Florence Hand Home opened its doors in 1980. She was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of LaGrange and the “No Name Book Club” as she was an avid reader.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen O. Long who was publisher of LaGrange Daily News for 34 years.
As an only child, the joys of her life were her children.
Survivors include her son, Ben F. Rogers; daughters, Jennifer R. Bell and Glenna (Tony) L. Reames; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jasen) Danbury, Kathleen (Daniel) Peevy, Evan Reames, Quinn Reames, and Chris Reames; and two great-grandchildren, John Canfield and Alice Canfield.
The family of Mrs. Long will have a private graveside service in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

She was a graduate of Troy State at Montgomery, AL, and held varied professional positions throughout her working career. Deborah was an avid gardener and nature lover, an Alabama Crimson Tide fan, and was proud of her humble country upbringing.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Margaret Ramona Crocker Broekhoven.
She is survived by her stepmother, Sally Crocker, her brother Dennis Paul Crocker (Darlene), nephew Michael Broekhoven Jr., nieces Britni Hood (Adam), Melissa Martin (Chris), Jordan McCulley (Joe), and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Most importantly the family would like to acknowledge Kim Cantrell a special friend and caregiver.

Obituary Preview: Mr. James “Bill” William Melton, Sr., a pillar of strength, love, and faith, peacefully passed away on April 17, 2024, in LaGrange, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched. Born on June 25, 1941, in Etowah, Tennessee, to the late William English Melton and Nellie Mae Thorne Melton, Bill's journey was one defined by love, service, and unwavering faith.
Bill's life was beautifully intertwined with that of his beloved spouse, Bobbie, whom he cherished for 44 remarkable years. Together, they created a tapestry of love and devotion that served as the cornerstone of their family.
Professionally, Bill dedicated himself to the craft of large-scale construction, traveling the Southeast in pursuit of excellence. His tenure with Mr. Randy Smith was marked by dedication and craftsmanship, leaving a lasting imprint on every project he undertook.
However, Bill's greatest vocation lay in his service to his church and his unwavering commitment to his faith. His love for God was evident in every aspect of his life, guiding his actions, words, and work ethic. He epitomized unconditional love and faith, embodying the values he held dear.
Bill's legacy of love extended far beyond his immediate family. He was a beacon of generosity, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need, whether friend or stranger. His mantra was simple but profound: "The RIGHT way; The PAPAW way." He believed that our actions, words, and work ethic defined us, and he lived by these principles each day.
In the hearts of those he leaves behind, Bill's memory will forever shine brightly. He is survived by his children, James William Melton, Jr. and Candy Melton, as well as special family members, Jim and Niki Cadenhead, and Dot Messer. His siblings, Knox Henry (Mamie) Melton, Jean (Gary) Massingill, Martha Lou Bowers, and Doyle (Sheila) Bowers share in both the sorrow of his passing and the joy of having known him.
Bill's legacy lives on through his grandchildren- Adam (Caroline) Scarborough, Laura (Taylor Jameson) Scarborough, Scott (Toni Lee) Scarborough, Kennon (Sabrina) Cadenhead, William Morgan (Kaylee Keeth) Scarborough, Rachel Sheffey, Christopher James Melton, Christian Gabriel Melton, Briana Melton, Eva Marie Melton, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each a testament to the love and wisdom he bestowed upon them. His memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of Bill's life will take place at Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand on Saturday, April 20, 2024, with visitation from Noon until 2:00 PM, followed by the funeral service officiated by Pastor Claude Herbert. The committal service will then be held at Meadoway Gardens in LaGrange, Georgia.
In honor of Bill's compassionate spirit, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Trinity On The Hill Community Church, where his legacy of love and service will continue to inspire future generations.
Though Bill may have left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever dwell in the hearts of those who loved him, especially his beloved church family. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that his love and legacy live on.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dona Daniel Goodson. Survived by sister Susie Brown (Larry); nieces Holle Lewis (Sam) and Katherine Goodson (Chris) and nephews Whit Brown and Kyle Goodson; and five grandnephews.
Peggie enjoyed a successful career in the carpet industry where she was an internationally known designer. Upon her retirement, she returned to her beloved hometown where she shared her creative talents with her church and community. She conducted art classes at Enoch Callaway Cancer Clinic for cancer victims and their caregivers. Her art was her medium to share her joy and to work for the Lord. She worked with people of all ages, encouraging them to discover their own talents. She volunteered at Camp Viola, Rockridge, and Camp Juliette for the Deaf. She was very generous with her art, not only her works but her talent to encourage others.
Peggie was an active member of Rosemont Baptist Church where she, again, shared her talent and her love for the Lord. She was joyful to the very end.
A memorial service will be held at Rosemont Baptist Church on Friday, April 19, 2024. Visitation at the church at 1:00 pm, service at 2:00 pm. A private interment will be held at Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Koehler is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Koehler and Beverly O’Brien Koehler, and his brother, Gary Koehler.
Jeff graduated from Dubuque Senior High and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 to 1975. During his military service, Jeff was selected for the USMC Wrestling team and achieved the title of All-Marine Corps Wrestling Champion and Runner-Up All Service Wrestling Champion. After competing on the Wrestling team and earning a B.S. in Russian Studies/counseling from the University of Missouri and obtaining his ME. D and L.PC. from the University of Arkansas, he spent his career in the mental health field in various roles. He retired from his position as Executive Director at the Stewart Community Home in Columbus, GA in 2017.
Jeff enjoyed boating, motorcycle riding, traveling, especially to his favorite,” One Happy Island" Aruba, along with collecting and listening to all genres of music. He cherished spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandson, AJ.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Ellen (May) and children: Macey (Stephen) Palmer, LaGrange, Ga Payton Koehler, Victor, ID, Rhett Koehler and Ty Koehler, Fayetteville, AR. His brothers: Scott (Bonnie) Koehler, Brian Koehler, and Sister-in-law: Sandy Koehler. In-laws: Cyndie (Mike) Fritcher, Jeff (Sandra) May, and Julie (Brett) White. Additionally, he is survived by his grandson, Anthony Jeffrey (A.J.) Palmer, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded by his In-laws Bernard and Karen May, nephew, Larry Koehler, and great-nephew Hudsen Lauwers.

Obituary Preview: Johnnette Brown Thompson took her last breath, April 8, 2024, at the exact moment the country was watching the solar eclipse. She was surrounded by her loving family in her serene cottage located in Thomasville, GA. For years she has wondered why Jesus hadn’t already come to take her home. Now, after 96 well lived years, she is finally reunited with her beloved Savior. Johnette, born in Manchester, Georgia, January 24, 1928, was the cherished daughter of the late John J. and Mable Brown.
Johnette was a dedicated employee for what was once known as the USDA ASCS office, now USDA Farm Service Agency, in Meriwether, Upson, and Harris Counties. She was responsible for keeping fellow employees updated on new federal laws and programs important to the livelihood of local farmers. Johnnette was also a valued member of the Georgia Association of County Office Employees (GACOE). After retirement, she spent several years volunteering at Callaway Gardens with most of her time devoted to the Butterfly Center. She was a passionate reader, spending many hours with her bible, novels, and non-fiction.
Johnnette is survived by her three devoted daughters: Jetta Ward (Randy), Rebecca Moore (Dudley), and Lorelei Messer (Jim). She also leaves behind four treasured grandchildren: Heather Noel Biggers, John Lee Richter (Kelsea), John Dudley Moore (Elizabeth Harper), and Aulston Collier Moore (Katie Rohde) and two great-grandchildren: Adam Biggers (Mary) and Landon Biggers. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Jackson, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Bentley Thompson, her son John Willis “Brother” Biggers, her parents John J. and Mable Brown, sisters Frances Himic and Bernice “Bunnie” Horton, and nephews, Edgar "Buddy" Horton, and Jeff Jackson.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 12-2 PM at Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand, in LaGrange, GA, followed by a service at 2 PM within Higgins Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Pine Mountain, GA, for all who wish to attend. Johnnette will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Beth attended Baldwin county schools graduating from Baldwin County High School in 1986. Her whole life, Beth was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Milledgeville where she was baptized and raised up in a loving community of faith. After high school she worked full time in food services at Georgia College for several years. After a seizure in 1992, she struggled for the rest of her adult life with depression. Beth loved spending time with her family, doing puzzles, making latch hook rugs, walking her dogs, Scarlet and Roxie, and having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. Beth was a fiercely loyal friend and neighbor. On her daily walks she regularly checked in on people who might need a little help or just a smile to brighten their day.
Survivors include her father, Dr. David Gene Baarda; sisters, Dr. Jo Anna Fish and Rev. Laura Jean Baarda; nephews and nieces, John David Fish, Emily Elizabeth Yancey (Mark), Allison Lee Burt (Collin), and Andrew Ray Fish; great niece and nephew, Sadie Ann Elizabeth Yancey and Benjamin Richard Yancey. She is preceded in death by her mother and her bother-in-law, John Edward Fish. The family will have a graveside service beginning at 3p on Wednesday April 17, 2024 at the Traylor Family Cemetery in LaGrange, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Milledgeville, Georgia on Saturday May 11, 2024 at 1p. Obituary Preview: LaGrange, GA – On Friday, April 5, 2024, Joe H. Phillips, Jr. entered into eternal rest at the age of 84. Joe was born July 13, 1939 to the late Joe H. and Ruth Sego Phillips. Joe graduated from LaGrange High School in 1957 and continued his education at the University of Georgia where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Upon graduation, he went to work for Clemson Extension in Georgetown, SC. He moved to Conway, SC in 1969 and started the Forestry Department at Horry-Georgetown Technical College where he served as the Dean of Forestry until retirement in 1997. During that time, he sat on numerous boards and received many awards. He had a profound impact on his students and developed lifelong friendships with many of them. After retiring he moved back to LaGrange.
“My Joe”, as he was known to his granddaughters, was a loving and devoted father, brother and friend. He never met a stranger, loved to travel, was a plethora of knowledge and never passed up a yard sale. Joe could identify almost any tree and had over 100 different species planted on his property. He was an active member of Dallas-Dodd Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.
Joe is survived by his son Elliott H. Phillips and his wife Elizabeth, granddaughters Adelia and Olivia Phillips, all of Mount Pleasant, SC. He is also survived by his sisters Joy Phillips Grote and Judy Phillips, nephews Stephen Grote and Chris (Sherri) Everett all of LaGrange, GA.
The family would like to thank “our guardian angel” Gayle Mayo, the staff at Poplar Creek Senior Care and the staff at West Georgia Hospice for providing such wonderful care to My Joe.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, at Dallas-Dodd Presbyterian Church 1244 Wares Cross Road, LaGrange, GA 30240. Visitation begins at 11:00 am, service at 12:00 pm, with a reception following in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private.
