Marlene Ann Mersch, the daughter of John William and Elaine (Sundermeier) Opp was born at Wood River, Nebraska on May 12, 1938 and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska on April 18, 2024 at the age of 85.
Marlene grew up on a farm near Wood River. She attended District 44 School in Hall County, she graduated from Wood River High School and received her Registered Nurse Diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island and her BSN in Nursing from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
Marlene was married to William Lee Mersch on May 1, 1960 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grand Island, Nebraska. They had two children: Mark and Monica. Marlene’s career in nursing spanned 42 years, retiring in 2000. She worked at St. Francis Hospital and Lutheran Hospital in Grand Island, NE; worked at Garlinghouse and Harvey, gynecologists and University of NE Student Health Center while husband, Bill, was in law school. They moved to Aurora, NE when Bill graduated and joined Whitney and Newman law office in Aurora. Marlene worked at Memorial Hospital and Larson’s Nursing Home in Aurora. She spent the last 12 years of her career at Grand Island-Hall County Health Department in Grand Island, NE.

She was also on the Nebraska State Nursing Home Advisory Council under Governor Tiemann’s tenure and was a member of the Plainsman Museum Board and the Hamilton County Foundation. Marlene was a fifty-year member of Beta Sigma Phi and P.E.O. Chapter of Aurora. Marlene loved to sing. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran choir and sang with The Liberty Belles under the direction of Judy Sullivan for the twenty years of their existence. Marlene and Bill were charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church and were privileged to hold many different positions while it grew to serve many citizens of Aurora and the surrounding area. Marlene felt privileged to be a member of the first church council of Messiah. The night it was to meet at her home she decided to use the Girl Scout cookies she had in the deep freeze with ice cream for dessert. The freezer was located in the laundry room which was attached to the garage. She got all of the boxes out of the freezer to thaw and not one box had any cookies in it, yet they were all closed and piled neatly on the freezer shelf! Needless to say, there were no cookies for dessert that evening. Don’t know the culprits. Haven’t gotten any confessions from Doc Holiday, Butch or the Sundance kid to this day.
The brightest spot in her life was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and wanted to watch them grow up every minute she could. They were so fortunate to be present at the births of all three grandchildren. There were many trips to Omaha and Loveland, Colorado for birthdays, musical programs, baptisms, graduation, dance recitals, etc..

Memorials may be made in care of the family to be determined at a later date. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at www.higbymortuary.com. OBITUARY: ALAYNE OLSON
Alayne Olson (88) died on Monday, April 1, in Aurora, Nebraska.
Alayne was born in Stanton, Michigan in 1935. Her childhood was happy but was forever changed when her father died from a heart attack in 1940, when she was only four years old. Her mother held her family together with the help of their church family and friends. Their mother’s devotion to them, her beautiful provision of and care for them, gave them stability and joy in their childhoods.
As she grew up in Stanton, she loved her small town life. She enjoyed everything from ice skating with friends on cold winter nights, cheerleading, playing her clarinet, and singing in the chorus, to being cast as the lead, Corney Belle, in the hillbilly themed drama her Senior class performed.
Alayne attended Trinity College in Chicago for two years before transferring to Central Michigan University where she graduated with a degree in teaching in 1958. Following graduation, she taught for two years in Chicago before moving to be near the love of her life, John, whom she’d met in Chicago years earlier and lived in Nebraska. She taught in Beatrice for a year while they were engaged.
In 1961, Alayne married the man she would love and share life with for over sixty years. After their Michigan wedding, they moved to Nebraska, where John farmed, to begin their lives together. A 60th anniversary beach celebration in St. Augustine, Florida with their children and grandchildren was a cherished milestone. John and Alayne both loved the Lord, living for him through thick and thin.
Her teaching career spanned the years before having her own children (1961-63) and after her youngest son entered high school, culminating with a retirement from the Aurora school system recognizing 24 years of teaching primarily 4th graders (1984-99). Her love for her students and of teaching permeated the lives of the children who were in her classes year after year.
Serving at her home church was always a huge part of her life. Her faith in Jesus Christ was the bedrock that fueled the way she loved others. Whether she was teaching Sunday School, VBS, AWANA and or serving in the kitchen and in women’s ministry, she gave her whole heart to all she did. Her Bible was well loved and she couldn’t get enough of C.S. Lewis.
Alayne loved music, playing the organ and piano her whole life and she enjoyed going to concerts with friends, as well as opening her home again and again to others. She loved to travel and especially loved any time with her family. Family vacations took her all over the U.S. and to Europe. Her children and grandchildren were her delight and the bookshelf full of scrapbooks she made attest to her adoration of them.
Alayne is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, John; one daughter Rhonda (Keith) and two sons, Doug (Janna) and Mark (Sissy); and eleven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Rhonda’s family lives in Orlando, Florida while Doug’s family resides in Ord, Nebraska and Mark’s in Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by two younger siblings, Luke Rader (Maryann) and Lori (Rader) Anger and three nephews.
