Robert Gene Morgan - September 21, 1941 - February 18, 2022

Departed: 02/18/2022 (Rich Hill)
Obituary Preview: Robert Gene Morgan, 80 years of age, of Hume, Missouri passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Kindred Hospital Northland, Kansas City, Missouri. Bob is survived by his wife Sheila Morgan; his children- Preston Morgan (Rainey), Doug Morgan (Christine), Lesley Morgan Cochran (Dave) and Rhonda Morgan Yarick (Steve); fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents James and Eula, Betty Wilson (sister), Tommy Morgan (brother), and Tonda Sims (sister).
Bob was born to James Thomas Morgan and Eula VanDaun Morgan (Lile) in Greensburg, Kentucky on September 21, 1941. Bob was one of six children. While growing up, he spent several years with his maternal grandparents in Hodgensville, Kentucky.  He worked with his grandfather planting, tending, and harvesting tobacco plants by hand. It was here that he learned the value of hard work and also how to have fun drag racing cars. After school, he moved to Moorpark, California where he worked installing machinery for Julius Goldman Egg City plant. It was the world’s largest egg farm at the time. It was here that he met Sheila. He would fondly tell the story of how his boss would move Sheila from machine to machine as they needed to be fixed and then they would “run like a charm”.
Bob married Sheila Fern Farrell “the love of his life” on October 29, 1967 in Ventura, California.  Bob and Sheila moved to rural Hume, Missouri in March of 1969 where he engaged in farming with his father in-law. They moved into the family home of Sheila’s maternal grandparents where they have resided since 1969 in a century farm. Bob had a great passion for farming over the years. He also enjoyed several career opportunities in addition to farming. In the early years in Missouri, he worked at Feemster’s Gun Shop where he learned the trade of gunsmithing. After retirement and most recently, Bob filled the role of road grader operator of Henry Township which he enjoyed a great deal. Bob had a tremendous love for cars from a very young age. Early in life he had a 1966 Chevy II 327 4 speed that he would drag race. He also “souped up” Sheila’s 1966 Chevelle 396 4 speed much to her dismay! Bob strove for excellence and perfection in everything he did. He prided himself in straight crop rows long before technology could help us out! That perfection led him to the love of his hobbies- gunsmithing and woodworking.  Bob worked hard to provide for his family, loved deeply, and treasured his time with family dearly.  He knew how to have a good time and never missed an opportunity to pull a good prank, share a quirky quote or eat “Sheila’s chocolate pie”! If you knew Bob, you understood that his faith and belief in God carried him through life. He loved to spend time studying the Bible. In the last few months of life, Bob shared with friends and family his peace and readiness to be with God when the time came.  The following was his favorite scripture:  “If you have any encouragement being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love; if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and in purpose.” Philippians 2:1-2

Marian Elizabeth Eikenbary - September 11, 1920 - January 26, 2022

Departed: 01/26/2022 (Rich Hill)
Obituary Preview: Marian Elizabeth Eikenbary, 101, passed away at MedicaLodges in Butler, Missouri, on January 26, 2022. Marian was born on September 11, 1920 at home to Fred and Nell (Ayer) Wheatley. The third of nine siblings, she was the oldest girl. She was a tireless help to her mother and sewed her own clothes and those of her younger sisters.
Marian attended Rich Hill High School and graduated class of 1938. The love of her life, Lloyd Eldon (Pete) Eikenbary courted her on horseback, and they waited until she graduated to marry. They were married November 26, 1938, in the Methodist parsonage at Butler, Missouri, and started family life in a one room home in Rich Hill.  They moved shortly afterwards out east of Rich Hill to Pete’s parent’s farm with an old stand of pecans, right on the Marais des Cygne river. Marian always had a love of swans, maybe because of her home place.
Soon, Eldon was born, then Kay, then Oran. She was a capable wife and mother, keeping her children safe and well fed while her husband worked jobs that took him, and their only car, away from the family Monday through Friday. She was strong, steady, self-reliant, frugal and hard working.  Her joy was in her children, her pride was in her homemaking.  She was a consummate housekeeper and it was well known you could eat dinner off her floor, her house was kept so spotless. She crocheted beautiful afghans and doilies, sewed clothes and doll clothes, and mended and patched Pete’s work clothes invisibly. She canned and pickled, gardened, raised meat chickens, and harvested pecans. They hosted a yearly pecan picnic and many family dinners. Her private time was often spent in writing thousands of notes to friends or writing in her journal. She was the family’s ‘recorder’: remembering everything, putting notations on backs of photos and under knick-knacks, and keeping genealogy records.
Marian travelled quite a lot in her life, though she never had a car or ever learned to drive.  They purchased a streamlined (compact) 1960’s trailer so she could accompany him to his job sites. They lived in the towns of Lebanon, California, Bethany, Cameron, Lexington, Mexico and Lathrop (all in Missouri). Because she had near neighbors and could walk into town, she enjoyed this break from the farm. They spent time with their adult children and grandchildren at Mountain Home, Arkansas, in San Francisco, and went on a cruise to Alaska as well as taking various trips to visit relatives in far flung parts of the U.S. Her grandkids remember fondly staying with grandma in the trailer and visiting the town shops, or staying on the farm and playing in the pasture, and learning to make pickles, crochet and sew.  And Marian enjoyed going to ball games, horse shows and track meets to watch her grandchildren.
Marian died peacefully after an extended stay at MedicaLodges, where she resided after Pete’s passing.  She had her wits about her until the end and was sharp as a tack and not afraid to tell the nurses and caregivers what was what, in her gentle and brooking-no-argument tone of voice. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 80 years, Pete (99); son Oran (40); brothers Kenneth, Jim, Warren, and Forrest; her sisters-in-law Elnora, June, and Doris; and her brother-in-law Floyd Buhr.
Left behind to cherish her memory are son and daughter-in-law Eldon and Karen Eikenbary (Basehor, KS); daughter and son-in-law Elvin and Brenda (Kay) Henley (Kansas City, MO); brothers Alan Wheatley and wife Delores, Wayne Wheatley; sisters Joanne Buhr (Adrian) and Janice and Ronald Bolser; sister-in-law Phyllis Wheatley and dear friend Mitzi Knight, all of Rich Hill, MO; grandchildren and spouses Brad and Ruthie Eikenbary (Kansas City, KS), Renata and John Mogilnicki (Rich Hill),  Brian and Julie Eikenbary (Basehor, KS), Tracy and Brett Harrington (Prairie Village, KS) and Ryan Henley (Kansas City, MO). great-grandchildren Tanner, Ashley (Boos) and Dylan Eikenbary; Austin, Arlo and Madelyn Henley; Chloë and Lanam Harrington; Adelle, Corey and Lilliane Eikenbary; and nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces too numerous to name; and friends and neighbors dear to her.
Visitation is at 1pm, Saturday, January 29th at Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, followed by services at 2pm.  Burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, MO. Contributions to the Mark Wheatley Scholarship Fund or Papinville Historical Association, please.

Darrell Stevener - June 23, 1954 - December 02, 2021

Departed: 12/02/2021 (Rich Hill)
Obituary Preview: Darrell Donavan Stevener was born to Raymond and Myra (Gibson) Stevener on June 23, 1954 in Nevada, MO. Darrell departed this life on the morning of December 2, 2021.
Darrell was married to Debbie (West) in 1992. Together they have four children: Talana, Josh, Mark, and Traci.
Darrell attended the Rich Hill schools and graduated in 1972. While in high school he was the captain of the football team and a record-earning member of the track team. Darrell entered the family farm out of high school and would eventually take it over with his brother, Phil. Being from a long line of farmers, it was in his blood. Darrell had a passion and talent for the craft. He and Phil worked to grow the family enterprise for nearly 50 years so it’s legacy can continue for generations more.
Darrell was known for his genuinely kind, easy-going, and often goofy demeanor. He was always willing and ready to help others. Darrell was generally the “quiet” life of the party, pulling pranks and telling jokes. If you stayed around long enough, you might even get a new nickname (but not necessarily one you could use in public). He had a love for Disney, cars, traveling, and a good restaurant. When you lost him on a family trip you could usually find him at the nearest eating establishment getting a snack. As much as he liked to travel, he always wanted to be home in Rich Hill for the Fourth of July celebration. At home or afar, what mattered most was that he was spending time with his family creating memories which will be forever cherished. Darrell was a friend to many and would do anything for those he loved.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, aunts, and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, of the home; children Talana Sullins, Josh (Tracy) Sullins, Mark (Morgan) Stevener, and Traci Stevener; grandchildren Maddy, Morgan, Megan, Emma, Brynn, and Elle; brother Phil Stevener; brothers-in-law Roger West and Rick West; sister-in-law Tammi (Robert) Irwin; cousins Dixie Black, Mike (Cindy Wheatley) Black, Chuck (Marti) Gibson, Lester (Sara) Gibson, and Paul (Pam) Stevener, Jr.; life-long friend Jerry (Tammy) Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, December 7th at the Rich Hill First Baptist Church.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Monday, December 6th at the Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, Missouri.  Burial will be in the Green Lawn Cemetery.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It often includes details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

Check with the publication for their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may accept submissions online, while others may require email or phone submissions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the notice. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary?

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, often including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It is typically shorter than a full obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life.
