Dorothy Bell Burks - January 09, 1949 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Bell “Donna” Burks (75) was born on January 9th, 1949, in Springfield MO to Mary Francis and Edward Harold Burks and passed from her earthly life to her heavenly home on April 27th, 2024, while at her home in Walnut Grove MO.
Donna loved the Lord and had read her Bible cover to cover many times, something she was very proud of. Her church letter was held at National Heights Baptist Church in Springfield MO.
Donna is survived by and was mom to Kelly Regena Zeigenbein of Ozark MO and Beverley Marie Bretz of Walnut Grove MO. She was grandmother (Nan) to Ashley Bagby of Springfield MO, Brittni Bretz of Walnut Grove MO, Christopher Bagby Jr of Schell City MO, and Braylie Bretz of Walnut Grove MO, and (Manana) to Howard Zeigenbein III of Ozark MO. Donna was a great-grandmother (Nan) to Gage Bagby of Springfield Mo. (Nonny) to Ryder and Ryver Bretz of Walnut Grove MO and (Nana) to Shiloh Retherford of Springfield Mo. She is also survived by sisters Margaret Brashears and Betty Dorey, brother Sammy Burks, all of Springfield MO and many nieces and nephews.
Donna was preceded in death by both of her parents, her sisters Judy Broom and Kay Gregory, her brother Eddie Burks, her longtime companion John Bingham, her daughters’ father Kelly Brake, and countless additional family members/friends.
Donna was always willing to give her last dime to anyone in need - without hesitation. She had a humble spirit and always cheered for the underdog. Donna knew what it was like to do without, so she did her best to ensure that others had what they needed, never ever expecting anything in return. Donna could make a dollar stretch and did more with it than most who had plenty. Donna did not like to ask for help and rarely did. She was super independent, always wanted to “pay her own way”, and was most comfortable caring for others – even in situations where they were trying to care for her. Donna enjoyed her time on Facebook. She made so many great friends online, which helped to fill her days as her health declined and her pain worsened. She loved to share stories especially photos of her family. From time to time, she would get in the mix of online debates, which usually landed her in Facebook jail. She was a repeat offender!
Donna loved/adored all her family and will be remembered as always giving them her all and then some. Donna was beautiful, smart, quick-witted, compassionate, giving, thoughtful, stubborn and funny. She was outspoken and without filters.
Donna owned her own cleaning business and became longtime friends with most of her clients. She enjoyed crafting, helping John as he restored classic cars, and loved setting up at swap meets on the weekends. Donna enjoyed running her grandkids around, hitting every yard sale she could find, bumping down the road listening to LOUD music (country, rap, rock), tending to the beautiful flowers that she grew, and making friends everywhere she went. She was a talker and didn’t know a stranger.
Donna was ready to leave this earth and trade in her worn-out body for a new heavenly body, long before the Lord took her, but to us, she passed rather unexpectedly and, in our hearts, way too soon.
As we mourn the loss of our mom, grandma, and great-grandma - we ask that you say a prayer for peace for us when she crosses your mind, share a story every now and again to keep her memory alive, and make certain that you have a personal relationship with the Lord so that you will see her again one day.
In closing, we offer to you, her favorite Bible verse. She would proudly share that she learned it as a girl in Sunday school and kept it tucked away in her heart for all of her days. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. KJV: King James Version John 3:16
At Donna’s request, there will be no service. She will be cremated, and the family will announce a simple celebration of life that will be held in the next few weeks.

Brian Francis O'Neill - April 22, 1955 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Brian Francis Xavier O’Neill passed away in his home in Springfield on Monday, April 22, 2024.
He was born on April 22, 1955, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Timothy J.J. O’Neill and Bessie Anna Delastrada O’Neill. His father was in the Air Force during his earlier years, and the family lived in various locations in California, as well as on the island of Guam, until retiring to Boise, Idaho, in 1967, where Brian grew up and started his career as chef. He graduated from Capital High School in 1973, at which point he was already in the food and beverage industry. He worked his way up from dishwasher to line cook and ultimately to restaurant manager at Vic Haus Restaurant. From there he managed The Gamekeeper Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Boise.
Brian moved to Springfield in the mid-‘80’s soon after John Q Hammonds opened the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center where he took on the role of Executive Chef at University Plaza Hotel. During his time there he cooked for notable people including President George Bush (Senior) and Bob Hope. He also developed his skills in ice carvings which were used to decorate the buffets served to convention-goers for which he was recognized in a write-up in the Springfield Weekly Report. He left University Plaza in 1992 to manage the kitchen at McGuffey’s in Branson, and in 1995 went to work for Landry’s in Branson in a variety of positions as a chef. He retired from Landry’s in 2013.
Brian loved music, both to play and to listen. He picked up the drums and guitar in his younger years and they remained central to his leisure time. He was an avid Beatles fan, as well as Alice Cooper, the latter whom he followed through his evolution of music styles. Brian enjoyed a good game of golf as much as he enjoyed a game of poker with his friends. He was a loyal Jeopardy! watcher and a reader of history. When football season rolled around each year the Kansas City Chiefs took second place to his favorite team, the Seattle Seahawks. Every time the Seahawks played he would check in with family in Washington to alert them that “Missouri’s 12th Man is on Duty!”. Most importantly Brian loved his family and was known as “Uncle Snags” to his nephews and nieces.
Brian is survived by his younger sister, Kathleen O’Neill and brother-in-law, Steve Butler, of Battle Ground, Washington, and nephews, Tyler and Dylan Butler; older sister, Patricia O’Neill of Guerneville, California, and niece, Heather Wagner (Derek), and great-niece Isabelle Wagner and great-nephew Ryan Wagner; nephew Eric Gilliatt (Michael) of San Diego, California; and sister-in-law Dai Noh Chek, mother to niece, Anna Mei O’Neill, who is the daughter of his late brother, Michael O’Neill of Portland, Oregon.
A Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Branson RecPlex. Brian is inurned at Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery in Branson, Missouri.
Brian spent his adult life cooking good food for people. His family recommends donations in his name to organizations that provide food to those in need such as No Kid Hungry, World Central Kitchen, or a local food bank, as a special way to honor his memory.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri.

Tammy Jo Russell - May 03, 1959 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Tammy Jo Schreiber Russell, Born May 3rd 1959.
Cherished and beloved Mother, Daughter, SIster, Gramma, Great Gramma, neighbor, friend and companion.
Tammy passed away peacefully at home with her daughters by her side on March 28, 2024.
She struggled with declining health but never let that stop her from doing anything she could for her family and friends. She fought hard and she is at peace now.
Tammy had a huge heart and was so generous with what little she had. She made friends wherever she went and was a social butterfly. In her early years she was a LPN and her passion for caretaking never faded. Once unable to work any longer she filled her days helping others any way she could. She loved to cook and would always say “the way to someone's heart is through their stomach”. She adored her animals and spoiled them rotten. She could throw the best doggy birthday parties. Strong willed she liked what she liked. Never ran out of Dr. Pepper and would drive endless miles for a Starbucks. She hated the cold. Come spring she flourished and was busy getting her flowers and garden going as she truly had a green thumb. Her porch looked the best every year, breathtaking actually. She was so proud. A small and frail mighty fighter she was redeemed and her family knows without a doubt she is rejoicing in Heaven! She is preceded in death by her Mother: Jo Walsh. Brothers: Howard and Steven Schreiber. Great Granddaughter: Karlie Russell
She is survived by her Father: Albert (Patsy) Schreiber. Her daughters: Lori Jo and Kelli Jo. Three grandchildren: Isaac, Aiden and Olivia as well as Great Granddaughters: Charlotte and Addilyn.
Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 10:00 am at New LIfe Church. 3245 S Kansas Ave. Springfield, Mo. 65807.

John Joseph Dick - February 09, 1949 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: John Joseph Dick Jr., age 75, of Battlefield, MO, entered into eternal rest on March 21, 2024 at the age of 75. He was a beloved father, grandfather and brother who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The second of two children, John Jr. was born in Dodge City, KS on February 9, 1949 to John Joseph Dick, Sr. and Charlotte (May) Dick. John Jr. remained close with his older sister, Charlotte Mary, who affectionately called him Johnny, until his passing.
John Jr. spent his early years on a farm in Minneola, KS and often reminisced about the older, simpler days of farm life. Johnny and Mary enjoyed playing outside and bicycling on country roads. He grew up milking cows and playing with his dog and cat. John Sr. taught his children the value of hard work and observing the sabbath. Sunday Mass was followed with fishing, driving to visit family and friends or cruising the country roads together, a habit John Jr. found soothing throughout his life. In 1955, the family moved from their farm in Minneola to Dodge City, where Johnny and Mary attended Sacred Heart Catholic School.
During his summers off from Dodge City High School, John Jr. worked at Boot Hill Museum where his first job was to drive a stagecoach pulled by mules. It was said there were so many ‘John’s working on the property that he was referred to as ’Big John’. He was also known to pick up the tongues of the stagecoach and pull it by himself! He participated in the Old West Show, a western reenactment where he rode a horse and participated in shootouts.
John Jr. graduated from high school in 1967 and continued to work at Boot Hill. During this time, John Jr. and his cousin Kenny embarked on a multi-state, two-month road trip though the western United States. They drove from Washington down the California coastal highway making stops at the Grand Canyon and other National Parks. He often talked about this trip which was planned without computers or cell phones but did include calls back home to assure his mother they were ok.
John Jr. graduated from Fort Hays State College (now University) in 1973 with a Bachelor of Accountancy. When he was ready to permanently ‘get out of Dodge’ he moved to Kansas City, KS to be near his sister who was living in Shawnee, KS. He began his banking career with Beneficial Finance as an Assistant Loan Manager. It was in Kansas City where he met Sandra Puent, whom he married in Wichita, KS in 1976. Working in the banking industry moved them to Quincy, IL where they had four children, Christopher, Jennifer, Lindsey and Amanda, during their 20-year union. In 1989, banking moved them one final time to Springfield, MO where John Jr. fell in love with the Ozark Mountains and Table Rock Lake, frequently spending his time outdoors.
John Jr. was an avid hunter and enjoyed deer, quail and pheasant hunting. He extensively fished and was known to have multiple rods, reels and lures for any type of fishing. While his daughters were not known to bait their own hooks, they still enjoyed the process of casting and watching their bobbers for that possible ‘big catch’. He shared his love of the great outdoors during his time as Assistant Cubmaster of Pack 235 and Den Leader for his son’s den with the Boy Scouts of America. They both loved camping trips and enjoyed their time at Camp Arrowhead. John Jr. was also in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and volunteered as a Hunting and Shooting Instructor with the Missouri Conservation Department.
John Jr. had many accomplishments during his life but would rather brag on the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and sister before talking about himself. He enjoyed sharing the news of his family to anyone and everyone. John Jr. valued all his relationships, treating his friends like family and truly never knowing a stranger. His vast knowledge of his family history was unmatched. He could remember not only his current family tree but traced it back many generations with knowledge of homesteads and occupations.
John Jr. was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Springfield, MO from 1989 – 2015 and was actively involved in the Beginning Experiences and Singles Reaching Out Groups following his divorce in 1996. He made many friends and spoke fondly of their trips including one to Florida where he parasailed for the first time. He later joined St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Springfield, MO where he attended the Seas Seniors’ Group. He prioritized his time at the church and talked fondly of the Senior Mass, meals on Fridays and the fish fries during Lent.
John Jr. is preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his son Christopher (Kira) Dick of Boliver, MO, daughters Jennifer (Douglas) Schatzer, Lindsey (Matthew) McLaughlin and Amanda (Jeramy) Rosenstengel who all reside in the Springfield area; grandchildren Brody, Caleb, Abigail and Cassian Dick, Warren and Silas Schatzer, Elijah and Lucas McLaughlin and Aubriana and Journie Rosenstengel. Johnny is also survived by his sister Mary (Wayne) Keutzer of Creighton, MO and Mary’s children Thomas (Elizabeth) Gudenkauf, Connie (Ralph) Wheeler, Kay (Matthew) Murray and Teresa (Steven) Duncan.
Visitation will be held from 10-11am Thursday, April 4, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Road in Springfield. John's Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at 11:00am, with Father Tom Kiefer officiating. Burial will follow at Danforth Cemetery in Strafford, MO. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home of Springfield.

Anna May McKairnes - July 15, 1937 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: On a bright sunny first day of Spring, Anna May McKairnes had a wonderful morning, one better than she had in a long time. Following breakfast, she laid down for a nap and peacefully transitioned to the place we all hope to go, heaven. We are sure that standing behind our Heavenly Father was a very long line of family overjoyed to see her. Without a doubt, she is dancing with Dad and Dee with moves that are tearing up the dance floor in glory. Anna May was born in Philadelphia, PA July 15, 1937, to Edward and Philomena (Bowman) Cutter the fifth of six children. She closed her eyes for the last time on this earth March 19, 2024. Her life was full and contained many grand adventures. She raised 3 children while maintaining a career. Her brother Joseph recalls a favorite story about how Anna and her girlfriend frequently went to the theatre where American Bandstand was filmed in Philadelphia. On one visit, she was able to gain entrance and appeared on the show!!
Anna graduated from Nativity Business School in 1954 with a business certificate and spent many years working as a bookkeeper and in other office related jobs. In 1955, she married W.H. Reeves, a brief union that brought her beloved son, David Reeves into the world in 1956. In 1960 she met the true love of her life, Bernard McKairnes and they were married in Croydon, PA on February 11,1961. Doreen Marie McKairnes joined the family in July of 1962 and Karen Ann McKairnes arrived in September of 1967.
Anna loved her family deeply. Like her beloved husband Bernard, Anna’s work ethic was strong, and she willingly shared the task of supporting her family. While Dad worked 70-hour weeks, Anna worked her day job, came home to quickly prepare dinner, and go off to her night job. She worked evenings for many years as a sales associate for JC Penny, without complaint, to help provide what the family needed.
The Philadelphia years contain happy memories too numerous to count: trips to the New Jersey shore, the Pocono mountains, Sunday drives, time spent with her siblings and trips to the drive-in movie theatre, with Doreen safely tucked into a dresser drawer! As her son, one vivid memory I’ve hung on to all these years, is mom getting up at 5am to iron everybody’s clothes for the day. She did this for as many years as I can remember.
In the early 1980’s, the family moved to Houston, TX. In 1987, Anna and Bernard relocated again to Watonga, Oklahoma for Bernard’s new job and profession as a counselor. There were several more relocations after Oklahoma, which were to Dallas, then back to Philadelphia for a period, New Hampshire, Utah, back to Houston and finally to Springfield, MO in 2001.
As a devout Catholic, Anna and her husband Bernard were parishioners of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. When Anna was admitted to the nursing home, she was insistent on being able to attend Mass. David ensured she could attend for as long as she was able. She loved the Lord, and the church was extremely good to her. Her special care giver, Daisy, also took her to Mass. Daisy treated Anna like her own Mom, and they shared a special bond. Thank you also to her Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton family for the many years of help and support. Today, Anna is wrapped in the embrace and comfort of her heavenly Father.
Anna was dedicated to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her 3 children blessed her with 7 grandchildren, who in turn blessed her with 14 great grandchildren. She loved each one of them deeply and often spoke with pride about her grands and great grands. There were many happy times with her family. I know each of her grandchildren have their own special Grandma and Grandpop story to share. I know Grandma’s wish for Young Dave, Austin, and Bailey, Naomi, Sasha, Mandy and Brian, would be to cherish the memory of how unconditionally she loved each of you. She would not want you to be sad.
It is never easy to reduce a life of triumphs and tragedies to a few paragraphs that can adequately capture the true spirit of that person. Anna was an extraordinary person who loved the Lord, loved her family, and worked hard to let all who knew her know they mattered. Her granddaughter Mandy said “Grandma had a beautiful way of making me feel her love my whole life. When distance separated us, her calls and cards were always the highlight of my day” There was no distance in her heart for the love she had, displayed in her bright beautiful smile.
Mom spent 3 ½ years as a resident at Republic Nursing and Rehab. The past year was difficult as she declined mentally, but the entire staff at that facility both, past and present, continually gave Anna great care and showed her an incredible amount of patience and love. The wonderful staff who unfortunately see people at the end of their journey, do what they do every day in such a special way, with patience, kindness and caring. Thank you to the entire staff, especially Elaine, Renee, Annie, Angi and Russ for the care, concern, and love for Mom. To the staff she was affectionately known as Miss Anna. To Mom, every staff member was Doctor Powers. Doctor Powers took very good care of her.
The sadness of Dad’s passing is still a wound that won’t heal. Dee’s passing has also affected our family in a deeply profound way. With Anna now called home, it adds greatly to the entirety of our sadness. We will all miss her terribly but are united by the warmth and love she gave each of us. As her son, I told her many times that the Lord blessed me with the most wonderful mother anyone could wish for. Her love I will cherish forever. We were all blessed recipients of her affection.
Anna is no longer a slave to physical and emotional distress. The fear, sadness and loneliness are gone. Her bonds have been removed and she is wrapped in the light, beautifully reunited with the loved ones so important to her. She closed her eyes and when they opened again, she was in a place filled with unimaginable beauty, warmth, and love. We all pray to be so blessed someday.
What I wrote when Dad passed is still appropriate and worth repeating for Anna: Those of us who are left behind will celebrate your life for the rest of ours. May you rest in peace immersed in the light and love of the Father.
I will miss you, Mom. The way your eyes lit up every time you saw me filled my heart with joy. I hope enough joy has been stored to last until we are together again.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Ed, Peggy, Marlyn and Geraldine, and by her husband Bernard McKairnes and daughter, Doreen Marie Trevino. Left behind to mourn her passing are son David and wife Sheri of Springfield, daughter Karen Ann McKairnes of Woodward OK, son in law, Arvis Trevino of Kingwood, TX, grandchildren David, Austin, Bailey, Naomi, Sasha, Mandy and Brian as well as 14 great grandchildren, brother Joseph Cutter and wife Dottie of Maple Shade, NJ; nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30am on Friday, April 5, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2200 W. Republic Road in Springfield, MO. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30am with Msgr. Tom Reidy officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Springfield where Anna will rest eternally beside her husband and daughter.
