Departed: 04/17/2022 (Texhoma)
Obituary Preview: Kurt Friedrich Schaefer was born Nov. 26, 1935 in a small town close to Chicago. His sister Elizabeth was born about 1939. They had a good family life with his dad’s brothers often over on Sunday afternoon to play pinochle and snack. He attended high school in Elmhurst, IL graduating in 1954.
Because a school friend had relatives in the Oklahoma panhandle, he came with him to Beaver county and then to PAMC, taking biology and chemistry and graduating in 1958. Here he met and married Earlene Hendricks of Beaver. They had three children Anne (1957), Lisa (1958) and Eric (1960). He and Earlene both continued their schooling. He got a PhD in biology and came to teach at PAMC, Goodwell, OK in 1965.
At PAMC (OPSU), he enjoyed doing varied courses, especially his entomology as he identified Texas county insects. During most of this time Kurt had kept his body in very good shape with jogging, often doing several miles both morning and evening. Kurt and Earlene divorced. He later married Judith Schaefer and moved to Texhoma, OK. Retiring from OPSU in 1999, he then taught web design at local schools and did web pages for the town. He continued his walking exercise, often picking up roadside trash as he went and taking the recyclables to Dumas, TX.
Kurt’s health deteriorated in 2016 and he made frequent trips to Amarillo for cancer treatment. He seemed to recover from this but was often tired. He died very unexpectedly on Sunday April 17, 2022 at the age of 86.
His services will be 2:00 P.M at the Texhoma Church of Christ, April 25, 2022, with Ron Eggleston officiating.

Anita Mitchell - June 01, 1930 - January 02, 2020

Departed: 01/02/2020 (Texhoma)
Obituary Preview: Anita Yvonne Daniel was born on June 1, 1930, in Texhoma, OK to Leland and Dortha Daniel. She went to be with our Lord on Thursday, January 2, 2020.
In 1940, Leland and Dorthy moved their grocery store from the lower floor of the Alamo Hotel to a  few doors down to Farmer’s State Bank Building, which had formerly housed Mrs. Grover Field’s Dry Cleaners and Tailor Shop. Seven-year-old Yvonne had become buddies with Mrs. Fields. When people would drive into town on Saturday afternoon to shop and visit, Yvonne would sit in the car with Mrs. Field and learn to crochet and knit.
After the U.S. entered WWII, Yvonne and Mrs. Fields would meet at Daniel’s Cafe and knit sweaters for the soldiers fighting in WWII.  As a fourteen-year-old, Yvonne went to work for Harry Vincent at  Vincent’s Pharmacy. Each working day she would mix up the Coke syrup in the basement, in anticipation for Coke sales that day. It was said she was the most beautiful soda-jerk anyone had ever seen, standing on a stool making those strawberry sodas and blending those chocolate malts.
World War II ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers on the 8th of  May 1945. It was time for dancing to the big bands. It was time for  high school activities: singing in the Texhoma High Girls’ Trio, playing basketball and watching football games, all of which had been discontinued during the war. She attended Jr-Sr Prom with her high school sweetheart, Duane Mitchell.
She graduated as Salutatorian with the Texhoma High School Class of 1948, and went off to Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College, 10 miles away at Goodwell, OK. After one year of college, she married Duane, on a Sunday morning before church service at First Christian Church, August 7, 1949. To this union were born four children: Carmen, Tommy, Bob and Bret. They blessed Yvonne with seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. This past year, the couple celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Yvonne and Duane purchased the Fred and Hallie May Krull Farm in 1958. The couple was involved in farming and ranching. Yvonne kept books for their farm and later for Duane’s partnership, MMB,  with Brady Mitchell and Chris Beattie. Yvonne worked many years in the office at Texhoma Livestock with her Aunt Euline Smith and Mother-in-law, Kate Marshall.
Faith, Family and Friends were Yvonne’s treasure on earth. Church played a large factor in Yvonne’s life, where she was active in Sunday School, Ladies’ Bible Study the Missions Committee, and played the piano for over 30 years. She was taught the Bible thoroughly by Bible scholars, such as her Grandmother Jennie Daniel, her Aunt Pete and Aunt Cille Sweet. Her father, Leland, taught Yvonne and Duane in First Christian’s  Adult Bible Class.
Duane and Yvonne watched generations of family participate in Texhoma  band and choir, sports, FFA and National Honor Society. The couple attended graduations from Texhoma High School, Oklahoma State University, as well as OU Medical and Dental Schools. Yvonne’s activities included lots of life-long friends made in ESA Sorority, Red Hats, bridge club and calypso. She loved her THS Classmates and Alumni.  One of Duane and Yvonne’s recent honors was being named in September of 2018 as Parade Marshalls for Texhoma’s Fiesta Days. Later that day, her class  of 1948 was also honored for their 70th Anniversary as Alumni of Texhoma High School.
She and Duane also made many friends as they traveled as far south as North Africa with a grain company, and as far north as Alaska. The two have been to most of the 50 states, including Hawaii. Foreign countries visited were Mexico, England, the Caribbean Islands and Western Europe. They have spent summers at their cabin in Angel Fire, New Mexico and later in their condominium in Bella Vista, AR. After they sold those properties, they stayed post-Christmas at Sun Life RV Resort until April 1st for 19 winters in Mesa, AZ where they made many good friends from all over the United States.
Yvonne is survived by her husband of 70 years, Duane, of Texhoma; her daughter Carmen and her husband Kenny Harland of Hulbert, OK and their family, daughter Ashley Lanman and her husband Kenny and their children Kendall and Kellen of Edmond, OK, son Zach and his wife Ashley of Tahlequah, OK; her son Tommy and his wife Cathy and their children, son Brady and wife Kristi and their children Trent and Allie, son Jamey and his wife Chelsey and their children Emma and Maddie; a son Bob and his children, son Ben and his wife Kati and their children Mason and Breelyn, and son  Bryce and wife Raquel and their children Jaxon and Calvin of Aubrey, TX; her sister-in-law Selma Keylon of Sand Springs, OK.
Yvonne was proceeded in death by her parents, Leland and Dortha Daniel, a brother Lyndell Daniel, a Mother-in-law Kate Marshall; a son Bret Wayne Mitchell, and a grandson Kendall Ryan Harland.
Services will be Sunday afternoon at 4:00  p.m. at First Christian Church, 120 Third Street, Texhoma, OK with Pastor Matt Maples, officiating. Services are entrusted to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors.

Bret Wayne Mitchell - January 20, 1962 - November 04, 2019

Departed: 11/04/2019 (Texhoma)
Obituary Preview: On Monday evening, November 5, 2019, Bret Wayne Mitchell passed away from this life to the next where he ”will run and not be weary....walk and not be faint.”
Born in Guymon, Oklahoma, on January 20, 1962, Bret was the fourth child of Duane and Yvonne Mitchell. He was born with a cleft lip and palate and spent his first two months in the hospital. He would later need eye surgery to correct a crossed eye, and due to his right leg turning inward, he wore a brace on his leg about 3 years. In spite of his challenges, Bret began his formal education at Texhoma Elementary School. He also attended special education classes in Dumas, Texas, driven the 100 miles per day by his mom, Yvonne. He continued his education at Stratford, Texas, and Edison School in Guymon, before finishing his last two years at Texhoma.
When Bret was 18, he moved to Garden City, Kansas. Under the direction of Southwest Development Services, he worked as a helper in the business office and later painted western belts manufactured by the special needs students at SDSI. Bret resided, at what became known as Summit ResCare, in Garden City, Kansas for 39 years.
Bret was quite a zany character, keeping his family on their toes. At age 3 ½, he taught himself to read by comparing the ads he heard on tv to the ads he saw in the Amarillo Globe News. His love of tv continued with his love of medical shows, his favorite being ””Emergency.” He caused quite an uproar at school when he decided to call 911 saying that his teacher was needing medical assistance. Bret’s perfectly applied medical rhetoric got the ambulance to the school quickly. His teacher, however, was not experiencing any medical difficulties and was on playground duty when the fire truck, the ambulance and the police rolled up to the school. The teachers, administrators and emergency folks were not as impressed with the situation as the children were.
On the home front, Bret could also be quite amusing, such as the day he went next door to Emet and Della Callaway’s to get help opening some green beans. When he was informed his mom had the same opener, he proceeded to go home and open all the cans in the pantry, which his mom found when she arrived home. His dad was also surprised to hear from his neighbor, Jesse Johnson, when Duane left the house, Bret, with no driving experience, would get in Yvonne’s car and go forwards and backwards in their driveway.
Bret was also blessed with an incredible photographic memory, which sometimes got him into trouble. Helping in the SDSI office, he memorized personal, private information and would then go to his bedroom and duplicate the forms and information with his typewriter, which of course was against the rules. He could also remember telephone numbers, which once resulted in 98 calls to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in one month, when his parents gave him his own phone, which he didn’t keep long.
Bret’s favorite pastime was bowling. He had to quit bowling because of onset of Parkinson's it affected his speech initially and moved to his legs and then his hands. It wasn’t long before he had to use a walker, and eventually, a wheelchair. He continued enjoying his outings, including being pushed in his wheelchair as he identified each animal at the zoo. He also loved to ”dance” in his wheelchair with the staff.
One of our fondest memories of Bret will always be his love for the Lord. He put his great memory to use by memorizing scripture within seconds. His favorite outing was attending the first and second service each Sunday at Bible Christian Church. Although he loved country music, he especially loved the praise and worship service and listening to the preaching. As Cody Goodnight, his aid at Summit ResCare explained to us, in spite of developing a stutter, which sometimes made him hard to understand, when he would sing, he had a beautiful, strong voice with no stuttering. His favorite song to sing was ”Go Rest High On the Mountain, ” which Vince Gill wrote for his deceased brother.
Bret was proceeded in death by Grandmother, Kate Marshall; Grandparents, Leland and Dortha Daniel, and nephew Kendall Ryan Harland.
He is survived by his parents, Duane and Yvonne Mitchell; his sister and her husband, Carmen and Kenny Harland and their family, daughter Ashley Lanman and her husband, Kenny, and their children, Kendall and Kellen, son, Zach and his wife Ashley; his brother Tommy and his wife, Cathy and their children, son, Brady and wife Kristi and their children, Trent and Allie, son, Jamey and his wife Chelsey, and their children, Emma and Maddie; his brother Bob and his children, son Bryce and wife Raquel and their children Jaxon and Calvin, son Ben and wife Kati, and their children Mason and Breelyn and his Aunt, Selma Kelyon.
Bret’s family would like to thank the staff for the care he received at Summit ResCare, with a very special thank you to Goodnight, his aid, and to Sherrie Harrison, St Catherine Hospital Social Services and his ICU nurse, Morgan Nevola. Bret held a special place in his heart for his church family at Bible Christian Church and a special thanks goes to all our family and friends who played a part in Bret’s amazing life. We are comforted by a song his sister, Carmen, used to sing, sung by Sandi Patty:
The angel will sound, the shout of His coming, And the sleeping shall rise, from their slumbering place. And those who remain shall be changed in a moment, And we shall behold Him, then face to face. We are leaving Bret peacefully in His Father's arms until our wonderful reunion!
Services will be Saturday morning, November 9th at 11 AM at First Christian Church, 120 A 3rd Street, Texhoma, with Pastor Matt Maples, officiating. Cremation and services are entrusted to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors.
Memorials may be given and designated to Summit ResCare, Bret Mitchell Memorial Fund, andwill be used for handicap accessible facility improvements.  Memorials will be accepted at Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
