Obituary Preview: Judith Ann Buck, daughter of Benjamin Lee and Edith Inez (Fletcher) Soper, was born on January 23, 1945 on a farm on the shore of Tuttle Lake near Dolliver, Iowa. She passed away surrounded by her family on July 1, 2022 at Mercy One Hospice Home in Mason City, Iowa at the age of 77. On March 23, 1963 Judy and Melvin Buck eloped to Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where they were married. She graduated from high school in Ceylon, Minnesota shortly after that. The couple made their home in Estherville for a short time before travelling around for various jobs. The couple travelled and worked for the carnival for a while. They eventually settled back in Estherville to raise their family. Judy finished her working career at Polaris. In 2019, Judy moved to Mason City and resided at Good Shephard Nursing Home, where she met and gained many friends. Judy was a past member of Calvary Baptist, Union Baptist, and Grandview Baptist Churches all of Estherville. She enjoyed being outside; especially fishing, camping, or just sitting at the park watching the birds. Traveling around the area and exploring old graveyards was a favorite past time of Judy’s. She spent many hours playing scrabble with her mother. During her time at the nursing home, she enjoyed playing cards with the other residents, games like 500 and Oklahoma Rummy. Judy taught her grandchildren how to play cribbage. But the things that brought her the greatest happiness and pride were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She adored all of them, even if she had to wait a while for her red-headed ones. Judy is survived by her children Julie (Jon) Schacherer of Estherville, Carol (Rick) Cummings of Gravois Mills, MO, and Paul (Debra) Buck of Mason City, her grandchildren Jeremiah (Andrea) Schacherer, Rebecca (Christopher) Edwards, Rachel Schacherer, and Benjamin (Samantha) Buck, and her great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Hannah, Christina, Gabby, Katelynn, Daniel, Emma, Jasmine, Jaxsten, and Remington. She is also survived by her brother Darrell Soper, sisters-in-law Judy Nelson, and Barbara Soper, brother-in-law Richard (Chris) Buck, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Judy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, five stillborn grandchildren, and two stillborn great-grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her brothers Elden Soper, Harry Soper, and Roger Soper, sisters-in-law Barb Soper and Geraldine Whiting, and nephews Kelly Soper, David Soper, and Mark Soper.

Deane had a sister Marlene Ann, two years older and a sister, Sherry Lee, ten years younger. A sister Florence Mae, between Deane and Sherry was stillborn.Deane graduated from Calendar High School in 1955. He then continued to live on the family farm and started an upholstery shop. He later worked for the Webster County MVD for many years. In the later years he worked as a painter until he retired. During his retirement years he enjoyed camping in southwestern US.Deane remained single his life. He moved to Estherville in 1989 and learned how to "garage sale" here.Preceded Deane in death is his parents, Henry and Esther Haatvedt; sisters Marlene Ann, Sherry Lee, and an infant sister Florence Mae.Deane is survived by special friends Tom and Sue Koons.Inurnment will be at Vinje Cemetery in Callender, Iowa near his mother.

In 1941, she graduated from business college in Mankato, MN.After graduating from college, Lorna worked at Railway Motors in Fairmont for three years and then moved to Estherville and worked at DEK for three years.On June 22, 1947, Lorna was united in marriage to Wilburn Swanson at the Methodist Church in Estherville. Following their wedding, the couple lived in Estherville for a short time before moving to her parents’ farm near Dolliver, where Lorna’s parents built a home for the newlyweds.Lorna was a member of the Dolliver United Methodist Church, where she was confirmed, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and served as president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, Galloping Grandmas, and the Chatter Club.Lorna had many hobbies which included quilting, embroidering, making bead bracelets, crocheting, gardening, keeping scrapbooks and funeral books, roller skating, and line and square dancing. She enjoyed collecting beanie babies, barbie dolls, and tea pots. She was also known for jumping on her lawn mower and keeping the farm looking great.Lorna liked to bake pecan pies for different occasions. She didn’t have many flops, but one time for Kim’s birthday, she forgot the sugar, but he said he ate it anyway. During the holidays, Lorna made lots of different kinds of cookies the family enjoyed.Lorna was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Iowa football teams, college basketball, and the Minnesota Vikings. Her favorite card game was 500, and she also enjoyed word searches, puzzles, euchre, and charades.Family meant a lot to Lorna, especially family gatherings. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her great joy and pride, and she was so proud of them.Lorna is survived by three children, Karen Lown, Diane (John) Larsen and Kim (LuAnn) Swanson; grandchildren, Jay Lown, Mitchell Lown, Emily Earl, Jana Vazquez, Lindsay Steffen, Nick Larsen, and Jessica O’Brian; thirteen great-grandchildren, Isabella, Mason, Sam, Max, Benji, Liana, Elaisa, Olivia, Robert, Thomas, Harrison, Lilah, and Owen; as well as her cousins and many friends.Lorna is preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Swanson, her parents, and son-in-law, Robert Lown.

Obituary Preview: Michael Rhodes Sjoblom,(“Old Mike”) was born on February 17, 1940, in Antigo, Wisconsin to Maurice and Beatrice Sjoblom. He passed away on June 24, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 82. After his high school graduation, Mike enlisted in the Marine Corp. He served oversees in the JAG corps. Later, he was stationed at Cherry Point, NC. While he was stationed there, he met Barbara Coffin as they both were working at the officer’s club. On July 9, 1960, they were married in Reynolds, Indiana and began their lifetime of love. Following his discharge from the Marine Corp, they moved to Wolcott, Indiana. He worked for Jack Gray Trucking and for his in-laws, Martin and Martha Coffin at their restaurant, The Country Inn. He then began working at Arts-Way Mfg. in Wolcott. After a fire destroyed the Arts-Way Wolcott plant, the family relocated to the Armstrong – Ringsted area with Arts-Way. A few years later, he started a part-time painting business with Raymond Sanders called S & S Service (Sanders and Sjoblom). Then, in 1975, he and Barbara created MichaelSon Inc. It was a joy for him to work alongside his son. He enjoyed working and he had a very strong work ethic. He worked up until 2 weeks before his death, when his health declined rapidly. On April 2, 2013, Barbara passed away after a battle with cancer. In late 2014, Mike started corresponding with Barb Mullen Jones. The two shared many common interests and enjoyed spending time together. Mike found love for a second time. Mike spent a lifetime loving his family, building a business, and supporting his community. He served on the Armstrong City Council and the Emmet County Handicap Organization (ECHO). He always enjoyed the annual family trip in his motor home, fires in his fireplace, checking on job sites and reading. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner. Mike is survived by his son, Michael(Sharon) Sjoblom of Milford; daughters Martha (Dennis) Olson of Ringsted, Mary (Richard) Hersom of Oskaloosa, and Margaret (Todd) Gochanour of Fairmont, seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Eric, Erin, Micaela (Ryan), Mallory, Mariah, and Andrew, three great-grandchildren: Carter, Isaac, and Rhett, fiancé Barb, brother William, sister-in-law Donna and brother-in-law Denny. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara, two brother-in-laws, a sister-in-law and two nephews.

Lloyd is survived by his children Steve (Bridget) Johnson of Des Moines, Denise (Rick) Poston of Des Moines, Pam (Bruce) Bruns of Milford, Lori Nitchals of Des Moines, Patty (Dick) Boevers of Newell; and Tom (Lori) Johnson of Estherville and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
