James H. Brown - June 27, 1957 - March 21, 2022

Departed: 03/21/2022 (Kingston)
Obituary Preview: James H. Brown, June 27, 1967 - March 21, 2022James Henry Brown, 64, died Monday, March 21, 2022.Born June 27 1957 in Kingston, he was the youngest of five children born to Irene Florence Guest Brown and George Edward Brown.Jim was an artist before he was anything else. He drew, painted, sculpted, acted and built with enormous energy and vision. He studied at Ulster Academy and under the late Nicholas Buhalis, as well as everywhere he went.He communed with many of the finest creative minds of his time and of the ages, giving of himself unstintingly, a warm, charming man who led a considered life. He was happier outdoors than in, happiest of all outdoors with a sketchbook, and always up for a play, museum, festival or cookout. Jim could light up a room, galvanize a project, or help a friend untangle the knottiest problem with equal ease. His true north was hippie. He lived his beliefs about peace, equality, freedom and the environment -- his tastes were simple and elegant, and his determination boundless. When his mother’s health declined he made the decision to relocate to Florida to be near her, taking various jobs (he was especially hilarious on the subject of working night security at an elite gated community), studying at Florida Atlantic University, and always, always making art. For a time, he resided in North Carolina and followed in his parents’ footsteps by solving problems for IBM.On his return to the Hudson Valley in the late 1990s, he worked with teens in crisis for Family of Woodstock. He had a gift for helping the willing find their strengths and a wise, generous, and stoic approach to life.He was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings Barbara, Jeffrey and Alice. He is survived by his rescue cat, Sabrina; one sister, Suzanne Kramer of Florida, and two nephews, David Wirtz of Ithaca and John Betros of Nevada, as well as a circle of beloved friends who were fortunate enough to know him Jim was adamant that he did not want a funeral or memorial service of any type. Celebrate his life by supporting living artists and heeding these words he wrote to himself and reread every day: “Love one another. There is a lot of need, so make some use of yourself while you can.”Cremation arrangements were under the direction of the henry J. Bruck Funeral Home, 261 Broadway, Kingston, NY.The photo of James H. Brown is a Self-portrait in clay.

Claire Lucille Kassor - April 23, 1934 - January 20, 2021

Departed: 01/20/2021 (Kingston)
Obituary Preview: Claire Lucille Kassor, a long time resident of West Shokan passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at The Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, NY. Born in Yonkers, New York on April 23rd. 1934, she was the eldest daughter and middle child of Amodio & Lucille Gianfelice. As a young woman she wanted to become a painter and studied illustration & painting at The New School in Manhattan. In 1956 she married William J. Kassor, a U. S. Navy veteran, temporarily putting her artistic career on hold, all the while continuing to draw, paint, sew, write, sculpt ceramic works, and grow incredible gardens throughout her life. In her sixties she developed a type of art uniquely her own that she called, “Fabric Art”; meticulously applying pieces of string, fabric and organic materials to paper and canvas to create uncannily realistic portraits of nature. Claire’s works were praised, and, although not as a painter as she had hoped, she finally achieved the recognition of her peers and professionals she’d always desired. Her works became highly sought after and were exhibited in many commercial art galleries in New York State. Her home gallery was the Arts Upstairs in Phoenicia, NY. To quote one art gallery owner, “Claire’s ‘Fabric Art’ works rarely lasted long on exhibition, they were almost immediately purchased, something that she found almost unbelievable.”
After her family, Claire’s two greatest loves were children and flowers. She will forever be remembered by all the children and families she helped as a “second mom and grand mom” working as a Social Worker for Ulster County Children & Family Services for nearly 20 years. She was indeed a constant gardener knowing most of the Latin names of her flowers that she tended and protected zealously against deer and wild animals. She was a member of The Tongore Garden Club in the Town of Olive for decades, and wrote & illustrated a children’s book on flower gardening. For many years she worked and managed florist shops in Ulster and Dutchess counties.
Claire and her husband Bill adopted two children; Michael and Laura. Later it was discovered she had cancer, and after treatment she thrived for fifty years. She was a wonderful, caring, and loving mother—whose independent personality was apparent and acknowledged by all who knew her well, and not so well. She was an outspoken fighter and advocate for Women’s Rights and Equality for all people. She was an Environmentalist and viewed the continuing destruction of our planet as the worst tragedy and greatest challenge of humanity.
She is survived by her son and daughter Michael Kassor and Laura Kassor (AKA Meryn Oakwood) & families, “Thank you mom, We Love you”; her younger sister Rosemary Sava & husband Blaise Sava & family of Yonkers, NY ; Eleanor Gianfelice & family; Mary Ellen Kassor Cox and her daughter Kathleen “Kat” Cox & family. Her uncle Nicky Bilangino; Teresa Bilangino; her many cousins with whom she spent some of her happiest moments; Felicia, Mary Anne, Anthony, Anna, & families. Her nieces and nephew, Rosemary “Ro-Ro”, Monica, Blaise, & families; her step-everythings—and all the many children she cared after and loved. Her husband William and older brother John Gianfelice are previously deceased.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a formal announcement of their passing. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the death, and provide information about funeral or memorial services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may offer assistance in writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for around 150-200 words.

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find instructions on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

Can I write my own obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?
