Joyce M. (Wostarek) Shupak - March 12, 1949 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Marie (Wostarek) Shupak of Frelsburg, Texas, passed away on April 4, 2024. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Joyce was born on March 12, 1949 in Sealy, Texas to Justin and Cora Wostarek. On April 4, 1971 she married the love of her life, Johnnie Shupak, Jr. Together they raised five children.
Joyce worked at Heinshohn’s Store in Frelsburg and the local drugstore in Columbus for several years. She then became a cook at The Falls running the golf course snack bar between the ninth and tenth hole where she met many famous people and had autographs that she was very proud of. She took pride in serving the BEST chicken salad sandwiches and yummiest burgers around. After she retired from the Falls, she and Johnnie opened up their own business, J&J Pavilion in New Ulm, where they made more friends that became family. They catered many events together, entered BBQ cook-offs, and worked with her brother to provide meals to the senior families in the area.
Joyce loved knitting, crocheting, dancing to polka and old country music, baking, and playing bunco with friends. Joyce crocheted each one of her children a special blanket and continued the tradition of gifting a handmade blanket for each grandchild upon their graduation or 18th birthday. One of the fondest memories is that she would call you at the crack of dawn to sing you Happy Birthday over the phone and sometimes it would be in the middle of your workday, but she wanted to make sure each birthday for each person felt special. If for some reason you didn’t answer, she would sing her message on the answering machine or voicemail.
She crocheted blankets for Texas Children’s Hospital, and was in the process of making handheld pouches that would hold a “miraculous medal” for cancer patients that were receiving chemotherapy and was making blankets for those individuals as well. She was well known for her homemade noodles and kolaches and always had special orders anytime she was making a batch; and everyone loved the coleslaw she made for the church fish fries. She enjoyed having BBQs and fish fries with her family and friends.
She attended many church retreats and loved making baked goods for church picnics. She volunteered at most local events including church and volunteer fire department functions. She also volunteered at the Columbus Food Pantry.
Joyce was a devout member of the Catholic Church and her Catholic faith was immeasurable. She and Johnnie raised their family accordingly.
Those fortunate enough to have known Joyce, recognized her gentle heart, pure kindness and deep love for her family and friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Justin and Cora (Buxkemper) Wostarek; son, Charles John Shupak; sister, Elizabeth Klausmeyer (Arnold); brothers, Allen Wostarek and Karl Jeffry Wostarek; in-laws, Johnnie and Emily Shupak, Sr.; brothers in-law, Jerry Shupak, Sr., Robert Shupak, and Donald Shupak.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Johnnie Shupak; sons, Chris (Anna) Shupak and David (Emily) Shupak; daughters, Anna (Charlie) Krueger and Theresa Shupak; brothers, Joe (Cathy) Wostarek, Michael (Dorothy) Wostarek, Monroe Wostarek, Justin Wostarek, and Thomas (Amy) Wostarek; sisters, Darlene (Billie) Hinze, Mary (Ronnie) Luedke, Adeline (DeWayne) Dvorak, and Lisa (Mike) Moeller; brother in-law, James (Shirley) Shupak; sisters in-law, Patsy (Andy) Eckermann, Joyce (Jack) Schmidt; ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Debra Gail Janik Sandell - December 01, 1954 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Debra Janik Sandell, loving mother and grandmother, peacefully passed away on March 27, 2024 at Baylor St. Lukes Hospital in Houston, Texas after a short, but courageous battle with leukemia.
She was born on December 1, 1954 to Allen Earl and Frances (Henske) Garling. Growing up in Bellville, Texas, Debra was raised in the Christian faith. She was baptized on January 16, 1955 at St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem, and was confirmed on March 30, 1969 at St. John Lutheran church in Bellville. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus since 1973. She attended Sunday school classes throughout her life as a student as well as a teacher, and for a time, also played piano for the Sunday school. She was a proud member of the Bellville Brahma Band and enjoyed raising 4¬H projects for the Austin County Fair.
In 1973, she married the late Irvin Janik. With the opportunity of employment, they moved to Columbus, Texas later that year. As a housewife, Debra raised her three children in the same Christian faith that she had, always putting her family first, many times, sacrificing her own needs. Her enjoyment of raising 4-H projects in her youth led to her raising New Zealand and Californian show rabbits in the 1980's. She also served as Rabbit Show Chairperson for several years for the Colorado County Fair.
Always strong and determined, Debra eventually struck out on her own in life. She went to work for HEB Grocery in 1990 and retired in 2018. Throughout her career with HEB she worked as a cashier, bookkeeper, general merchandise lead, and eventually as the scan coordinator, which was her favorite position with the company. She also made many close friends and acquaintances with fellow employees as well as customers. After several months of retirement, Debra just couldn't "sit still". She went to work part time for several years for Kay Klauber Candies. Once again, she quickly made friends with her coworkers and had a special place in her heart for the entire Klauber family.
After "fully retiring" Debra enjoyed tending to her plants and yard, seeing her grandchildren, and spending time with her "besties" Karen, Maxine, and Darlene. Debra was a simple woman. She was raised simple, and she lived simply. She never desired to be in the limelight or to have anything that she didn't need. She humbly lived her life the best that she could according to God and loved the ones that she cared for. She is going to be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Debra was preceded in death by her parents Allen Earl and Frances (Henske) Garling. She is survived by her sons James Janik and wife Shelley of Bernardo, David Janik and wife Jill of El Campo; daughter Amanda Justus and husband Heath of Aransas Pass; grandchildren Hayley and Zachary Janik, Kayla and Coltyn Janik, and Nathan Garamillo. She is also survived by brother and sister-in-law Royce and Elana Garling, and nephew Weston Garling all of Bellville, and her first true friends, all of her cousins.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at St Paul Lutheran Church in Columbus. Funeral service will follow at 10:00 AM with Pastor Alan Kethan officiating. Following a reception for family and friends at the St Paul Lutheran Church Lighthouse, a private family burial service will be held in Bellville, Texas.

Departed: 03/11/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Zavian Lopez was born at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Texas to Cierria Ehrhardt and Paul Lopez on March 11, 2024. On March 11, 2024 at 6:20 p.m. I delivered a beautiful baby boy who we named Zavian Lopez. Zavian instantly gained his little wings and flew up with the help of our angels to a beautiful home where Jesus resides, called Heaven. Our Zavian weighed 2.6 ounces and was 6 inches long. He had big, beautiful eyes, a cute little nose and he had his daddy’s lips and ears. He had long legs, fingers and toes. His hands were held together slightly above his heart where his cheek rested. Zavian’s daddy and I took turns holding and rocking him in our hands, telling him how much we love him, singing to him, kissing his head and praying that he could feel us. We held and admired our precious boy for hours, taking in all of his features to save in our memory and soaking up our time together to hold in our hearts forever. We imagine Zavian in Heaven as the beautiful baby that he is, full of smiles, laughter and happiness surrounded by Jesus and all of our loved ones that have passed before us. God knows we would’ve done anything in the world to have been able to keep our baby here with us and if we could’ve, we would have held him forever. We pray that God let’s our baby know how loved he was, is and will always be. We’ll wait for the day when we can kiss your head, tell you how much we love and missed you and hold you in our arms forever. Rest in Heaven our sweet baby boy, we love you so much. You’ll be in our hearts, always.
