Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to pay tribute and share memories.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes and more photos.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including anecdotes or humorous stories can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to several hundred dollars, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published, but this depends on the publication or platform's policies. Be sure to proofread carefully before submission.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private obituary or create a memorial page on a password-protected website.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

Check with the original publication or copyright holder for permission before republishing an old obituary online. You may need to obtain permission or pay royalties.

What if there are errors in an obituary?

If you notice errors in an obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the correct information.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages can be created on platforms like Facebook, Legacy.com, or MemorialPages.com. These pages allow you to share memories, photos, and stories about your loved one.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?
