Obituary Preview: On April 25th, 2022, following 67 years of life well-lived, Gail Hicks Getzen entered into the presence of the God she loved. As her family stood around her, telling stories and laughing, Gail slipped quietly and peacefully off to her true Home. She’s preceded by her parents, Nick and Milly. She is survived by her husband, Jimmy; daughters, Amy and Christi; sons-in-law, Lorne and Shayne; grandchildren, Sam and Jackson; and siblings, Holly Elliff, Kitty Lynn Deal, and David Hicks.
Gail lived life rejoicing in all the good gifts of God; enjoying her family, friends, and acquaintances; traveling the world with Jimmy; creating children’s musicals and writing Bible studies to accompany them; delighting in the beauty of creation; and serving others with her creative gifts. Gail’s writing reached more than three-quarters of a million children with the good news of Jesus and the truth of His Word. The ripples of her life crossed the globe. She made friends wherever she went---and her travels took her to all seven continents. Her gentle witness allowed her to connect with people from all walks of life.
Gail was known for her infectious laughter, sincere interest in others, compassion for the suffering, deep heart of prayer (which never left her—even at the peak of her struggle with Vascular Dementia), her beautiful singing voice, her bright mind, and her devoted love of her family.
Gail loved a party, and while we miss her terribly, we are so delighted that she’s entered the greatest Party of them all. Because of the hope of Jesus, we eagerly look forward to the day when we rejoice with her there too.

She was born in 1933, in Monticello AR to Emmett Hugh and Mary Emily (Millen) Dye.  Kittye married her high school sweetheart, Yates Pope Wright June 5, 1955.  They had 2 children, Susie Cook and Jim Wright. He was a steady, quiet, dependable man with a terrific sense of humor.   Larry NEVER called out of work.  His yes meant “yes” and his no “no.”  If he said he would do/be there, you could bank on it . . . every single time.

Louis Geoffrey Miles was born in Media, PA. His parents were Louis Abram and Kathleen Lumb Miles, his younger brothers Gerald (2020) and Gary.  The Media High School graduate of 1962 communicated often with his classmates who called him Melvin.  Lou met his wife Sharon Clark of Marion, KY while attending Bethel University in McKenzie, TN.  He and Sharon stayed close to their college fraternity family throughout the years.  After graduation in 1966, he and Sharon returned to Media to start their family.  In 1975, Lou accepted a position in Nashville, choosing to move Sharon, daughter Alisa, and son Geoffrey to Hendersonville, TN where he enjoyed spending time trolling his bass boat on Old Hickory and other lakes fishing with friends, family, or just with nature. Our Dad was happy when our Mother was happy.  He was proud of their accomplishments and gave the best example for Alisa, Geoffrey, and grandson Blake.  He showed us how to be honest, compassionate, and caring in the most humble way.  In Dad’s initial career as an insurance claims adjuster, he focused on helping the person(s).  In 1995, Dad found a new career to help people when he joined Sharon to make the real estate team “We go the extra Miles for you.”
To enable Lou to continue to help people, please donate to the Dystonia Foundation.  He was honored to spend time helping his son just get through life after his disorder became disabling.  There are no programs to help Geoff get to doctor appointments due to his inability to speak or help with his daily needs with the shortage in approved skilled caregivers.  For Dad, please spread the word to broaden people’s awareness of the disorder. Visit https://dystonia-foundation.org/.  Donate by phone 800-377-3978 or donate by mail:
Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, 1 East Wacker Drive, Suite 1730, Chicago, IL 60601. Let’s gather to honor Lou.  Please join the family - Sharon, wife; daughter and son-in-law Alisa and Bret McCulley; son Geoffrey and his son Blake Conyer, Blake’s wife Courtney and their son Ryker in Rockland Park alongside the lake he loved.  If you have a story or thought to share with us, please write it down and bring it for us to read sometime in the future.  We are grilling burgers and dogs.  Bring a beverage with you…  Maybe something you think Lou would like…
His final open house is Saturday, April 23 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Pavilion 2B in Rockland Park at 5 Power Plant Road, Hendersonville, TN 37075

Bill loved life!!! Everyone who met him was impacted by his life. He was an amazing son, brother, and uncle. Bill was perpetually happy. He brought joy and light to everyone with his smile and laughter. He was the best example of “love your neighbor”. In 1988, he was critically injured in a car accident that left him unable to walk and with minimal communication abilities. That didn’t stop him. He still radiated joy, life, and love. His smile brightened every room and those who met him were blessed. He will never be forgotten. He is now hearing “well done” in heaven! He is now whole, running, and shouting praises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide information about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share funeral or memorial service details, allowing others to pay their respects and attend the service if they wish.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased person. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, personality, and accomplishments to create a fitting tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or funeral home websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed account of the person's life and accomplishments.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge per word or line. Funeral homes may also offer package deals that include obituary publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows individuals to reflect on their life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or modified by family members or funeral homes.

What if I don't want an obituary published?

If you don't want an obituary published, you can express your wishes in your will or advance directive. Alternatively, your family members or executor can decide not to publish an obituary after your passing.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the deceased person's personality and spirit.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment details.

Can I make corrections to an already published obituary?
