Darwin Hanson - May 17, 1952 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: We are saddened to share that Darwin Hanson earned his wings March 15, 2024 with his “bride” Nadine and children by his side. He was such a devoted husband, father and Papa.
Darwin was born on May 17, 1952 to Cliff and Delores Hanson in Minot, North Dakota. When he was a high school senior, the family packed up and drove to Alaska to live. Darwin decided to return to Washington to graduate from high school there. His parents were outdoorsmen and loved to fish and hunt and gave him many memories of trips together hunting sheep, moose and caribou.
Darwin loved any wild adventure he could come up with and get someone to go along with him! His favorite was in 1970 when he invited a guy he had met at a party to ride motorcycles up the Alcan Highway to Alaska. They are best friends to this day and have shared too many adventures to mention. Darwin loved skydiving, driving Nascars, jumping from cliffs and scuba diving in the tropics to name a few.
Darwin joined the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 367 in 1973. During his 31 years with the union, he worked on the Trans Alaska Pipeline and was job foreman on numerous projects in the Anchorage area. He was so proud to take an early retirement in 2004 at age 52. He loved the trade so much that he founded Northern Education in Anchorage. In 2009, he received a Certified Instructor Training in Plumbing and Pipefitting certificate from Washtenaw Community College. With this he taught basic plumbing, North Slope safety training, CPR, first aid and OSHA rules through Alaska Work Partnership in three different Alaskan villages. Finally, he taught plumbing at the women’s Highland Prison in Eagle River, Alaska.
In 2010 his “bride” (his treasured name for Nadine) retired and together they travelled all over the country on a Honda Goldwing with the 5th wheel or the motorhome. After that, they started taking cruises to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Jamaica. Sadly, the last cruise on Darwin’s bucket list was the Panama Canal but his illness intervened.
Darwin and Nadine were married on December 20, 1990 in Maui, Hawaii. Together between his two children and her two children, they have been blessed with five of the most amazing grandchildren. He made sure that each of the grandkids had special memories of camping and fishing trips.  He was their number one fan watching every hockey game possible even if it meant going out of state to watch the action.
There wasn’t much Darwin couldn’t accomplish. He remodeled homes they purchased by “fixing it” or “big deal it.” Darwin would leave an impression on anyone he would ever meet. He had this sense of humor that would remain in your heart forever.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Delores Hanson and father-in-law Chub Hancock. He is survived by his wife Nadine Hanson, daughters Vanessa (Jay) Dupree, Erica (Jeff) Arnold, Stacey Richards and son Kevin (Catalina) Hanson and mother-in-law Marjorie Hancock. Also by his siblings Diana Gerondale, Cheryl (Pat) Herter, Linda (Stan) Babnik, Lee (Yvonne) Hancock, Sandra Rose, brother-in-law Wes Norris and Terri (Jeff) Matthis. And lastly by his cherished grandchildren, Maxwell, Benjamin and Isabel Dupree, Emma and Wyatt Arnold.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Anchorage, Alaska during the summer and a graveside ceremony will be held at Elm Park Cemetery in Baudette, MN at a later date.

Lawrence James Levasseur - June 14, 1947 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Service for Lawrence Levasseur of Baudette will be held at First Lutheran Church in Baudette on February 5, 2024 at 2:00pm with a visitation an hour prior. Lawrence James “Jim” Levasseur was born June 14,1947 to Ernest “Bud” and Florence “Marion” Levasseur at the Warroad, MN
Hospital. His parents brought him home to their farm along the banks of the Rapid River in Carp, MN, where his older brother Gerald awaited him. Like many “Carp kids” and Levasseur cousins, Jim attended primary school at the Carp School through 8th grade, and then transferred to the Baudette School, where he played both hockey and football during his high school years. After graduating from Baudette High School in 1965, Jim enlisted in the United States Army, serving from March 1, 1966 - February 10, 1968, including overseas in Germany.
Jim returned to his hometown of Baudette in 1972, after working several post-military construction jobs in the Twin Cities area. Here, he met his future wife, Natalie, and began his 30+ year career as a journeyman lineman for NorthStar Electric Cooperative. Jim and Natalie were married on February 9, 1974, and welcomed their only son Bradley James on May 15, 1979. Jim took great pride in serving the community he loved, keeping the lights on for all - nights, weekends, holidays, and all the time in between. He retired in 2006.
In addition to his career as a lineman, Jim also farmed small grain crops, kept a small herd of cattle and baled and sold hay with his father and his brother, Gerald. Jim enjoyed and took pride in maintaining his farmland as both wildlife refuge and hunting land, a joy he shared with his son Brad. Here he loved to admire and chase the deer. He can also be remembered for time spent in his garden, though he wasn’t very fond of the weeding. He would pick and peel a cucumber right out of the garden, still warm from the sunshine, heavily salt and pepper it, and offer it up. You wanna bite? he’d say with a teasing laugh. Over the years, and in between work, farming and lots of great card games, Jim took many trips to Whitefish Bay, Canada, a favorite getaway, where he fished for trout. But out of everything Jim enjoyed in his life, it was giving his granddaughters Ranger rides that topped his list.
Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 217 of Baudette for 54 years, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars club 723 of Baudette. He will be memorialized at the Lake of the Woods Veteran’s Memorial at Timber Mill Park in Baudette, MN along with many veteran Levasseur cousins and his brother, Gerald.
Jim will be remembered by his wife Natalie (Stapek), who he would’ve celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with this February, his son Bradley (Katie) Levasseur and his granddaughters Sierrah, Savannah, and Shayleeh Levasseur, sister-in-law Carol Levasseur, niece Sheri Levasseur and her daughters, and many cousins. Jim is preceded in death by his parents Ernest “Bud” Levasseur and Florence “Marion” Levasseur and his brother Gerald. He died January 24, 2024 of natural causes, after years-long treatment for lung cancer.

Geraldine M. Anderson - July 10, 1932 - January 11, 2024

Departed: 01/11/2024 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: Geraldine May (Chipperfield) (Butler) Anderson was born July 10, 1932 eldest of 8 brothers and sisters in Sioux Falls, SD. Being the eldest, she carried the burden of taking care of her younger siblings. In her younger years, Gerry grew up a tom boy not batting an eye for a good football game. In her later teens, she worked a short time as a telephone operator before she eloped with her childhood friend, Dwayne Butler.
She grew up living across the street from her future husband, Dwayne. They started as friends which ultimately blossomed into something more that lead to their marriage and 4 daughters.
Gerry was a military wife. She would pack up her family and move to where the United States Air Force would determine. The young family lived in Washington DC, where daughters, Sandra and Linda were born. Judi was born several years later in Rapid City, SD and Janet was born in Biloxi, MI. As they traveled base to base, Gerry would read novels like The Black Stallion and Beautiful Joe to her family to the point to where her voice was hoarse. In 1964, the USAF base brought the family to Baudette, MN. In 1970 Dwayne retired from the AF and they bought the Williams Hotel. Gerry worked for Marvin Windows as an assembly worker for many years until she retired. After retirement, she packed up and moved to Newell, South Dakota to be close to family where Gerry enjoyed her 2 daughters and many grandchildren for 11 years while she lived in South Dakota
Geraldine had a strong and personal faith in God. She instilled into her children the strong value for family. Going through the triumphs and tribulations in her life, Gerry always persevered. She demonstrated that strength many times during her life.
Gerry had a great love for all of God’s nature, including flowers and especially animals; however, the dog was the most near and dear to her. She had many dogs in her life that were very lucky to have Gerry as their dog-mom. If you stop by for some coffee or visit the “Dirty Shame Bar”, you had better make sure you didn’t do anything to inconvenience her precious canine. She loved to share the story of how she bravely saved a butterfly from a spider web. Geraldine was thoughtful and kind. She was faithful in sending birthday cards or anniversary cards. She would take the time to personalize each one by decorating with cute little stickers or putting a little money in it for “something for later.”
Geraldine will be missed by her close friend, Nancy Craig. Nancy was devoted and loyal to Gerry. She would call Gerry every night at 6:30 pm. The two would talk and giggle like teenage girls. Nancy would call Gerry her “golden” friend because of their 50 years of friendship.
On January 11, 2024, Geraldine passed away peacefully at the Warroad Care Center with her daughter Sandra and her Granddaughter Dawn at her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughters, Janet Butler, Judy Butler and Linda Johnson and all of her brothers and sisters.

Otto I. Lee - March 31, 1928 - December 30, 2023

Departed: 12/30/2023 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Service for Otto I. Lee of Baudette, MN will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 2:00PM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 5-7PM. Interment will take place at Elm Park Cemetery in Baudette, MN.
Otto I Lee was born March 31, 1928 to Ole O. and Rose Lee of Ross in Roseau County, MN. On December 30, 2023, he passed away at Lakewood Health Center in Baudette. He grew up on a dairy and grain farm. His father had emigrated from Norway. There were eight kids in the family who were taught to be hard working, sincere, honest, and caring.
Otto was baptized and confirmed in Concordia Lutheran Church, Ross. He attended a 1-room country school for seven years. When he started school he only spoke Norwegian, so had to learn the English language. After country school he attended Badger High School graduating in 1946. After high school he spent time working on the family farm until the Korean War broke out and Otto was called to active duty for 2 years. He took his basic training in Fort Riley, Kansas, and then shipped overseas. He was in the U.S. Army and spent considerable time in North Korea where he was wounded in action and was hospitalized in Japan. He received the purple heart for wounds received in combat. After discharge he went back to his home community for a while but enrolled at the U of M in agriculture and received his Bachelor of Science degree in December, 1957.
In early 1958 an Extension position opened up in LOW County. He applied and was hired starting work on May 5, 1958 as county agricultural agent. He held that position for 36 years. Being the only agent in the county, he wore “many hats” including agriculture, 4-H and youth, community development, and, sometimes, some home economics duties plus all the administrative matters. He also did some research projects that were pertinent to LOW agriculture. Education was the main focus of every ag meeting and farm tour. Otto could be found helping a farmer in his field, a feedlot, or at the kitchen table with a 4-H member. He also attended many out-of-town meetings for information updates.
Otto spent many seasons helping potato growers by tending the hygrothermograph – an instrument used to measure temperature, humidity, and rainfall 24/7. The info was analyzed and used in predicting when early and late blight might occur in the potato fields. Growers were notified when this might happen and could apply fungicide for control. Potato fertility trials were also a part of this effort.
A major ag industry in LOW and Roseau County was grass seed research and production. The Grass Seed and Legume Seed Institute was a major event for growers, business people and others interested. It was well attended and an excellent way to disperse information.
The National Association of County Agricultural Agents held their annual meeting in a different state each year. Otto was a Minnesota voting delegate for four years and attended approximately 15 annual meetings. He served as secretary of the MN Assn. of County Agents for 4 years.
For 35+ years Otto wrote a weekly column entitled “Farm Topics”. Additionally, he wrote special ag-related feature stories for the local paper.
In 1967 Otto and Ruth (Brune) were married at Concordia (Pickeral Lake) Lutheran Church of rural Albert Lea. They have made their home in Baudette and continued to serve church and community. Otto served as president of First Lutheran Church, on the building committee for the new church and helped Ruth on the altar committee. He served on the county fair board (40 yrs.), LOW Food Shelf Treasurer (25 yrs,) and numerous other ag and community boards.
Otto was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Martha Christianson (Arnold); Ann Turtinen (Leo); Olga Ydstie (Orlin); brothers Carl (Ann); Robert (Lorna); Lloyd(Shirley); Nels; and a brother-in-law Arlen Brune. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, a sister-in-law, Carol Brune, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
And here are a few parting words from Otto: There are great people in the LOW area. They always say, “hello” and call me by my first name. They are all my friends. The public knows who I am, even though I may only know 50% by name. It is always a very friendly and welcoming feeling as a friend and will always be remembered. “Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant” Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, CHI Lakewood Health Center

Kathy Coleman - January 15, 1945 - December 22, 2023

Departed: 12/22/2023 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: Kathy was born in Mason City, IA on January 15, 1945 to Ivan and Ruby (Borchert) Krueger. She spent much of her childhood on their family farm near Grafton, IA. In her teen years, the family moved to Prescott, AZ and she graduated from there in 1963.
Kathy moved numerous times in her adult life, but Baudette was always home to her. She loved the wildlife, nature and all four seasons in Minnesota.  For decades, she worked as a waitress at the Ranch House in Baudettte. She loved the job and was great at it. Her greatest of many strengths was her natural ability to make people feel welcome. After her health guided her to retirement a bit earlier than she would have liked, she found other ways to let people know she cared. She crocheted countless afghans for loved ones and donated them to various fundraisers to help people near and far, as well. Every new member of the family was promptly presented with one at the first reasonable opportunity. In recent years, she had set down her crochet hook and picked up beading instead. She made personalized keychains for almost everyone she met. She said it kept her busy and as long as people were still happy to receive them, she would keep making them. Which she did, up to her very last day. She loved to make people smile. Kathy was not only thoughtful and creative, but fiercely independent. She was never one to shy away from hard work. She had been known to chop her own wood, haul her water from a well and work on her own pickup truck in her healthiest and happiest years. If she had her mind set on something, it was nearly impossible to turn her around from it.

Grace Margaret Sonstegard - February 06, 1942 - November 26, 2023

Departed: 11/26/2023 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: Grace Margaret Wilson was born on February 6, 1942 in Roseau, MN to Leon and Elvira (Hartnell) Wilson. She was the second of five daughters born to the family. Grace grew up in Williams, MN, where she attended the Williams School and was the salutatorian of the graduating class of 1960.
A true tomboy at heart, she loved spending time with her daddy in the woods, hunting partridge and deer, as well as fishing with the large extended Wilson family on Lake of the Woods. These were hobbies that she continued to enjoy throughout much of her adult life. Additionally, she was a very talented artist, whose acrylic painted cabin scenes in various seasons are still treasured belongings to many throughout Lake of the Woods County.
In 1961, Grace married Edward Sonstegard of Baudette, and in September of 1962, the couple celebrated the birth of their only child, Lynn Margaret. While raising Lynn, Grace worked for Lake of the Woods County in the social services office briefly, and then became everyone’s favorite bartender at Moose Lodge #742 in Baudette, where she was employed until the early 1990’s. Talking bartender speak came with great ease, and she truly enjoyed the witty banter she often exchanged with patrons while slinging their favorite drinks for them. Many a bar stories she had to tell, and finding a local without a Gracie story to share is also few and far between. Following her work at the Moose Lodge she was employed at the Holiday Station Store in Baudette as the food service manager, until her retirement in the early 2000’s.
Grace enjoyed spending as much time as she could with her 2 grandchildren, Jamie and Joshua. She was often seen walking around town with the kids, taking them swimming at Peace Park, and even made time for annual summer camping trips at Zippel Bay with them. Family was everything to Grace.
Following her retirement, she kept herself young by helping watch her first great-grandchild, Sydney Lynn several days a week. She loved teaching her to bake, make mudpies, and fostered a real love for watching movies in the theater. Grace’s grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren of the next generation were her pride and joy. She always made sure to carry pictures of them with her, and along with the pictures, she shared even more stories about each of them to anyone who would listen.
As her great-grandchildren grew and entered school, she shifted her caregiving to her own father and stepmother, making them lunch nearly every day of the week. Following the passing of her stepmother, she continued to care for her father until his passing in 2012. Grace was an avid family historian, she loved genealogy and connecting all the dots to her ancestors. The county fair was always one of her favorite events of the year, and she enjoyed not only entering her own art pieces, but making projects for the fair with her grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren to enter in open class exhibit categories. In more recent years, although her mobility was becoming impaired, she was still often seen “walking uptown” to the Moose Lodge where she would visit with friends, play pull tabs, and enjoy being out and about. The winter months were more difficult for her to navigate out of her home, but she kept herself busy with crossword puzzles, and bird watching from her windows. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary-Eric Olson Unit 442. For many years she made nearly 100 tray favors, as she called them, EVERY month for residents of LakeWood Care Center, Parker’s ARC, and patients at Lakewood Health Center. The favors were always festively-themed for each month, and given on behalf of the American Legion Auxiliary she was so proud to be a member of.
Grace passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 surrounded by her family, at the age of 81, following a short illness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Furbish; stepson, Mark Sonstegard; stepmother, Mae (McKinnon-Olson) Wilson; infant sister Adelaide Wilson; stepbrother, Melford Olson; and very special nephew, Jackie Senkyr
. Grace is survived by her grandchildren, Jamie (Robbie) Johnson of Baudette and Josh (Mindy) Furbish of Plymouth, MN; great-grandchildren, Sydney Hufnagle, Jackson and Eva Johnson, all of Baudette, Maizley and Juno Furbish of Plymouth, MN; son-in-law, Ted Furbish of Baudette; step-daughter, Deb Criscione of Seattle, WA; sisters Daisy Westover of Baudette, Judith (Don) Senkyr of Williams, Jane (Roger) Anderson of Isanti, MN, and Mary (Gary) Bagne of Williams; very special cousins Bill Wilson of Baudette, MN, Larry Wilson of Isle, MN, and Steve Wilson of St. Croix Falls, WI; and many other family members and friends.

Lillian Esther Brown - July 03, 1926 - October 23, 2023

Departed: 10/23/2023 (Baudette)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Service for Lillian Brown of Baudette will take place on Monday, November 6, 2023 at First Lutheran Church in Baudette at 10:00 am with a visitation an hour prior.  Interment will be at Elm Park Cemetery.
On the morning of October 23, 2023, Lillian “Lil” passed peacefully in her room at Lakewood Care Center in Baudette where she has resided since May, 2018.  She was surrounded by beloved family as she began her journey to eternal rest.
Lillian Esther Johnson was born in Wabanica Township, MN on July 3, 1926.  She was the eldest of the “Five Little Johnson Girls” born to Oscar J. and Marie R. (Bredeson) Johnson.  Her entire childhood was spent in Wabanica where she and her sisters walked to school just down the road from their home.
When Lil was a child, she was afflicted with rheumatic fever.  Because she was required to rest quietly, she spent much of her time drawing.  Thus began many years of artistic endeavors.  Many of the subjects she loved to draw were glamorous women and movie stars.
She met the love of her life, William John Brown (Bill), in her late teens.  They went out west with her sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Elziar Nichols, where Lil and Bill were married at a Lutheran minister’s home in Roseburg Oregon on April 27, 1946.  They lived there for a short time until they moved back to Baudette where Bill built them a home.   Their house was conveniently next door to her dear sister Verna and her husband Elziar Nichols where they spent many years together as neighbors, sharing in the joys and activities of each other’s families.  Lil and Bill lived at that location for the rest of their married life until he passed in 1986 and where she continued to live until she moved into Lakewood Care Center of Baudette in May of 2018.
Lil was a homemaker most of her life, focusing on caring for her children and providing a comfortable home for her family.  She was an amazing cook and could make a delicious meal out of the most meager ingredients.  She sewed her own curtains and draperies and upholstered her own furniture.  On a few occasions Lil took on a few part time jobs.  She, along with her sister Verna and niece, LaRae sometimes worked as housekeepers at Baudette Motel and Morris Point Resort.  To them it was more fun than work.  She also worked behind the counter at the old bowling alley, cooking up burgers and coffee.
Throughout her life Lil also volunteered much of her time with various activities.  She and Bill were members of First Lutheran Church in Baudette where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher and where she also used her artistic talent to make posters and do calligraphy writing on various projects.  Lil was a cub scout den mother.  She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.  On two separate occasions, Lil designed and produced two books of prayers and devotional thoughts for the Legion Auxiliary.  One of them took first place in its division and both were selected for national display.  Lil also was the artist who created the designs for the pins for Baudette’s annual Octoberfest celebration from 1990-2007.   These became cherished collectibles by many from far and wide.  In the 1950s, Lil was one of the volunteers who were airplane spotters with the local Civil Defense program.
Several years after Bill passed away an old friend, Vern Hancock, reappeared in Lil’s life.  They enjoyed a companionship for many years and took several trips to Arizona and Alaska together.  Later, Vern’s ill health helped him decide to return to Alaska where he passed away in 2008.
Lil was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Oscar Johnson, husband William “Bill” Brown, sisters Verna Nichols, Viola Bowman Lyon, and Marlene Maus.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses:  Terry (Michelle) Brown and Roxanne “Tweety” (Larry) Larson all from Baudette.  She has one surviving sister, Merlyce and her husband Gerald “Jerry” Gubbels and one brother-in-law, Oscar Maus (Norma), all of Baudette.  Also surviving are five grandchildren:  Kellie (Buck) Nordlof of Baudette, Kayla (Mitch) Deere of Bemidji, Karlene (Jalen) Stay of Hastings, MN, Bill (Jessie) Brown of Savage, MN, and John Brown of Baudette.  She has seven beautiful great grandchildren who were her pride and joy:  Tanner and Ella Nordlof, Lillia and Louie Deere, and Leo, Mya, and Nora Stay.
Lil’s family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the physicians and staff at Lakewood Care Center, where they compassionately cared for her the last five and one-half years of her life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people of funeral or memorial services, allowing them to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, around 100-200 words. However, some publications may allow for longer or more detailed obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find guidelines on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly. Be prepared to provide the written obituary and any accompanying photos.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including personal stories or humorous moments can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or difficulties surrounding the person's death, it's best to approach these topics with tact and sensitivity. You may want to consult with family members or a trusted advisor before deciding what to include.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality, interests, or values.

What if I'm unsure about certain details in an obituary?

If you're unsure about specific facts or dates, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit them rather than risk inaccuracies. You can always verify information with other family members or records.

How long after a person's passing should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural traditions and personal preferences. Typically, it's done within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I update an existing obituary?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If you need to make corrections or additions to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was originally published to inquire about their update policies.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple places?

You can certainly publish an obituary in multiple locations, such as local newspapers, online platforms, and social media sites. Just be sure to follow each publication's guidelines and submission processes.

Are there any specific formatting requirements for an obituary?

Yes! Online platforms often allow you to include links to memorial websites, charity pages, or other relevant resources.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of online availability varies depending on the platform. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check their policies before submitting your obituary.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Absolutely! Memorial websites can be a beautiful way to honor and remember loved ones. You can include photos, stories, memories, and even accept condolences from visitors.

What if I'm struggling with writing an obituary due to grief?

We understand that writing an obituary can be a difficult task during a time of loss. Consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support, or seek guidance from a funeral home or counselor if needed.

Are there any specific cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Yes! Different cultures and religions have unique traditions and customs surrounding death announcements. Be sure to research and respect these practices when writing an obituary for someone from a diverse background.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer donations to charities rather than receiving flowers. Include this information in the obituary so that mourners know how they can best honor their loved one.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review your draft multiple times for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and factual inaccuracies. Ask others to review it as well before submitting it for publication.
