Doris married Walter Henry McMillan on April 9, 1949 in Forsyth, Montana. They had four children: Laura Jean, Karen Lee, Janet Lynn and Kenneth Clyde. After Walter’s death, Doris went to work at Kitchen Cupboard, House of Fabrics, Watco Inc, PoolCo and Billings Alarm.
Doris spent many years as Team Mom to several of her children’s sports teams. She was also their biggest fan. She was inducted into the Montana Softball Hall of Fame in 1999 with the Kings Women’s Softball team.
She was also an active member of the County Extension Office-Compass Club since 1949. The club was chosen to needlepoint the Montana State Flag on the dining room chairs in the Governor’s Mansion in 1984.
Doris was an excellent bowler and as a result, she went to the ABC Nationals twice.
Doris was an avid quilter.  She made the most beautiful quilts for every member of her family....multiple times.  We all have full quilt racks in our homes with her gorgeous creations.  She passed her passion for quilting down to her daughters (Laura and Karen) and granddaughter (Ramsey).
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, her daughter Karen McMillan, a grandson Aaron Mueller, a brother Ronald Stoddard, and a sister Jean Phyllis Rollwitz. Doris suffered from Macular Degeneration (MD). Often times, MD results in Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). CBS is caused by the brain trying to fill in the blanks that occur with the loss of eyesight. As a result, hallucinations occur that are very real for the sufferer. It is sometimes confused with dementia. Doris tried so hard to defeat the hallucinations but as she grew older, she weakened and grew tired. Her body eventually gave out and she passed on peacefully with her daughter, Janet, by her side and Laura talking to her on the phone from Virginia. Ken arrived just 5 minutes later. Doris joined her husband in Heaven on April 10, 2024…..just one day after their 75th wedding anniversary. They had been apart for 40 years. I imagine that reunion was a sight to behold. Celebrate!

Lilian (Lily) May Whitcomb - September 26, 2006 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter and sister, Lilian (Lily) May Whitcomb (Nelson), on March 20, 2024. She was just 17 years old. She passed away surrounded by her family after a heroic, four-year battle with Ewings Sarcoma.
Lily was born on September 26, 2006. Life with her was an adventure from day one; you never knew what mischief she was up to or what would come out of her mouth.
Lily was a warrior and faithful friend. She fought cancer with everything she had, even surviving 2 years longer than the doctors predicted. A situation that would have broken the strongest of adults was handled by her with dignity and grace. Amid her struggle, she found incredible strength, courage, and her voice… which she made sure everyone heard.
Lily was the oldest of four girls and loved being the big sister, often taking on a mothering role. Lily was strong and beautiful, both inside and out. She was witty with a dark sense of humor, only illuded to by her impish grin. Lily adored animals, especially her beloved leopard gecko “Avalon”. She also loved music, art, makeup, fashion, babies, scary movies, and Nike shoes…. of which she had an admirable collection. She also had a love of volleyball and one killer serve!
Lily loved her friends and spent as much time with them as she could.
Even in her darkest hours, Lily had a strong desire to give back. She made and sold bracelets intending to donate $1,000 to The Montana Hope Project…a goal that was quickly met.
Lily is survived by her parents, Donella and Brand Nelson; her sisters, Addison, Bergin, and Trinity; and her grandparents, Eilein Nelson and Roger Gelder. As well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She is preceded in death by Papa Rickey Whitcomb, Grandma Linda Batt-Gelder, and Grandpa Arthur Nelson.
She will be eternally missed and remembered by her family forever. Her passing has left a hole in our lives that will never be filled, but we are blessed with an abundance of memories and laughter that we carry with us.
As per Lily’s wishes, her parents are requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Lily’s name to The Montana Hope Project (https://montanahope.org/cash-donors).
There will be a Celebration of Life held on Thursday, April 4th at 1:00 pm at the gym in Lavina.

James C. Jacques - March 04, 1933 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: James (Jim) Clovis Jacques was born March 4, 1933 to Leo Paul & Evelyn Catherine O’Neill Jacques. He was born in Anaconda, MT where he attended school until his graduation in 1951 from Catholic Central High School. He worked at Kelly’s (Orville’s) Meat Market through high school and a few years after, helping support his family after his father passed away in November of 1950.
Jane Baier was teaching in Anaconda, when she happened into the local butcher shop, to inquire if they had “good” calves’ liver. The young butcher turned on the charm, and stated they have the very best and so began a love that truly never died, until Dad left for Heaven on Friday, March 15, 2024.
He married Jane Marcia Baier on August 17, 1958. The couple moved to Billings, MT in 1959. Jim sold plumbing supplies for then Crane and Ordway and later became the Sales Manager. They had 2 daughters – Jill Theresa and Jacqueline Ann. The darlings of Jim’s life.
He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, home improvement projects, and tinkering with anything. There wasn’t anything Dad couldn’t fix. He remodeled and built several houses in Billings when he had his own construction business in the 70’s.
In cleaning out his apartment, it was delightful to see the way he created things to make moving, storing, cleaning or shoveling much easier. He was definitely a gadget builder who built the original fidget spinner long before it’s time and the pull behind bike carts for kids, that his girls both had the pleasure of riding in back in the early 60’s. Both his daughters were thankful for his enthusiasm, knowledge and skill.
We have a picture of his hands to treasure. The hands that built so many things that the family has to remember him by.
Jane mentioned to Jim, in 1964, she wanted a house with a swimming pool. Jim went to work to build her that house a couple blocks away on 20th and Monad. The pool was a treat for many. Over the years, many a person commented about how Jim taught them how to dive, or helped with their fear of water. This makes us smile, because Dad did not like water and rarely went in the pool.
Jim, with the assistance of his friend Gary Hines, endeavored to build a joint family cabin in Red Lodge in 1962. The cabin brought many joint family trips and fond memories as the Jacques and Hines children grew up.
After his divorce from Jane, Jim married Marcia Michael, who passed in July 2000. During their time together, they moved to California, where he worked in a maintenance yard for PG&E. After a time, Marcia got her CA realtor license and Jim helped her sell homes in the Rocklin, CA area. This time allowed Jim to be close to his brother Paul and his children. Eventually Montana called them both back.
The story is told that while Jim and Marcia were at the Billings airport, they saw Bob Hope in the lounge. Dad asked Bob to write a note to his buddies at the Squire Lounge, as they will never believe they saw him there.
Bob wrote a postcard that Jackie found when cleaning out his apartment. It hung for years in the Squire. It was written to the Squire Lounge and signed, Bob Hope.
Jim managed a ranch near Big Timber for his brother-in-law for several years. He enjoyed remodeling, fixing fence, catching raccoons and bringing in the hay. He moved to Kalispell, MT and then to Bozeman where he maintained a 100-unit apartment building. He moved back to Kalispell and managed a 60-unit apartment building until 2018 when he moved back to Billings. Jim found his job passion in managing apartment complexes. Jim had a natural ability for helping people and fixing things.
On one of his trips from CA to Kalispell, his grandsons, Nathan & Kevin, were visiting Lloyd, Jackie & Josh. Dad was so touched when Kevin, his youngest grandson, took his hand and said, ‘Come on Grandpa’. In Dad’s mind it was a sweet gesture as his grandson led him across the lawn to the horse pasture. As Kevin proceeded to touch the hot wire on the fence, it gave a shock to Grandpa Jim. Dad shook his hand and his head, but kept a jovial smile on his face for the mischievous little boy. He found out later that Nathan and Josh had been torturing Kevin with little shocks for a few days and this was his chance to turn the tables on an unsuspecting victim.
Whether he was working or just a resident, Jim was noted for going out in the winter and brushing snow off cars for several “older ladies”. Jackie mentioned to him once that his ‘older ladies’ were actually younger than him. In moving Dad out of his apartment in Billings, being only a resident himself, the residents would stop by and tell us the stories of their appreciation for his care he provided. He couldn’t quit being the maintenance guy despite his body’s failings.
When Dad turned 90, Jill and Jackie arranged a walk through of the old Crane building Dad worked in for so many years located on First Avenue South. The girls remember going there and riding in the creepy old freight elevator while having the run of the place on the weekends. During the tour, Jim went through and explained what was located where on each floor. It was a special memory we were blessed to share with him.
Dad enjoyed his discussions of home improvement projects, the butchering of the yearly hunting bounty and sharing his knowledge of tools with Doug. His ideas were priceless. Lloyd took Dad out to their favorite gaming establishments, weekly and was Lloyd’s errand buddy often. Dad said many times us girls did well with the husbands we have. Doug and Lloyd felt the same way about their father-in-law.
Dad celebrated his 91st birthday at Riverstone Hospice Home. Jill & Jackie would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff of Riverstone Hospice Home for their loving care for Dad at the end of his life. The blessing, love and care the staff provided, had him commenting every day, “how did I get to be so lucky to have such a group of people caring for me?” The Staff poured their heart and soul into his last days. We must add, the closing of this facility in June is beyond tragic for South Central Montana.
Jim is survived by his daughters Jill (Doug) Wilson and Jackie (Lloyd) Williams; grandsons Nathan (Jenna) Zahn, Joshua (Haylee) Schaff; great-grandkids Lilly & Sam Zahn, Wyatt & Clara Schaff, all of Billings. He has many nephews and nieces who were the only ones to always call him Uncle Jimmy.
He is preceded in death by that sweet little grandson Kevin Zahn and the rest of his brothers, sisters, brothers and sister-in-law.
Dad, you will be missed. We’ll treasure the memories of singing “Be kind to your web-footed friends” along the streets of Bridger, MT, the story of how does a gooney bird call for his mother and the endless times you allowed the hands on the knees handspring, off your knees. Most of all the smile you gave each of us when we walked into the room and said to us “Hello Darling”. See you in Heaven.
Per Jim’s request, no services are planned. When talking to him about his final wishes, he told Jackie, ‘It would be okay to be near where your Mom is, but not in the water. I don’t swim that well.
Oh Dad. You make us laugh.
