Michael J. Maloney - November 16, 1940 - March 15, 2023

Departed: 03/15/2023 (Watkins Glen)
Obituary Preview: Maloney, Michael J., of Waneta Lake, the longtime Sheriff of Schuyler County and a leader in law enforcement throughout the Southern Tier, died on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, after a long illness. He was 82.
Maloney was born Nov. 16, 1940, in South Buffalo, an Irish enclave on the shores of Lake Erie. His father, Patrick, and mother, Margaret McGorty, were immigrants from counties Clare and Cavan respectively. Michael was the fourth of their six children.
Maloney was raised in a family of deep Catholic faith. He spent four years at the Diocesan Prep Seminary in Buffalo and eight years at Divine Word Seminary in Conesus.
In 1964, while working at O-Neh-Da Vineyard, he met Carrie Klien. They were married in November 1967. Soon after, they moved to Tyrone. They made their home in Schuyler County and had four children: Patrick, Michael, Kathleen and Matthew.
Maloney was hired as a deputy at the Schuyler County Sheriff's office in 1968. By 1971, he was appointed Undersheriff. On Aug. 1, 1973, Maloney was appointed Schuyler County Sheriff. At the time, he was the youngest sheriff in New York State.
Over a 32-year span leading the sheriff's office, Maloney implemented safety programs that were ahead of their time. They include starting a K-9 Unit and a Stop DWI program in 1983. He established a Drug Awareness Resistance Education program for county students while also creating drug-free school zones near local schools. For more than 25 years, he was coordinator for police training for Schuyler, Chemung and Steuben counties.
Through tragedy and triumph, Maloney led local law enforcement's efforts to keep the community safe. Maloney was on the scene of the 1992 mass shooting that killed four workers at the county office building in Watkins Glen. It was an incident that, Maloney later told The New York Times, "transformed" the community.
Maloney's career also spanned the resurgence of Watkins Glen International, the world renowned speedway where NASCAR races draw nearly 100,000 fans each summer. Maloney was a key part of the team coordinating security for the track's major events.
He retired on Dec. 31, 2005. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her work. She was a fantastic cook. Her spaghetti sauce or "gravy" as her son Skeet calls it and her pies were the best. She loved that her children shared her passion for cooking. Growing up our home was always the place to hangout. She enjoyed having all our friends at her house and for sure they didn't go home hungry. She was also a strong supporter of the "Squires". She loved her Yankees – especially Derek Jeter. She always enjoyed it when the cameras showed him walking away. If you know PeeWee, you know what I mean!
She held many jobs in her lifetime. Nick's Red & White, Ray Dann's Super Duper, Bus Driver for WG School and drove the 1st BOCES Bus to Corning – I think they had to put blocks on the gas and brake pedals so she could reach them – Lol. She worked 12 years for Smith's IGA, 22 years for NYS Fire Academy, retiring at age of 77, and worked the next 10 years with her daughter Ann at the Unique Country Boutique or as a lot of people called it "Pee Wee's" store.
She loved her Italian heritage and oh the stories she would tell. One of her proudest moments was having the honor of being the "Grand Marshall" for the Italian festival parade in 2016. She was the Matriarch of our family. She truly loved our family gatherings for Holidays and Birthdays. It was her joy and passion to have her family gathered sharing memories and laughing about all our antics of the past. We will continue to set a place for her at the head of the table and raise a glass or two in her honor and memory.
A Special thanks to Dr. Donnelly for his care and kindness towards our Mom over the years. Our family is eternally grateful to our sister Joni, niece and nephew Christie & Tristan for all the loving care given to our mom over the past three years. You fulfilled mom's wish and we are forever thankful. For all of us you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you've earned your sleep, your love and memories we'll eternally keep.

David Alfred VanAmburg - December 28, 1942 - December 10, 2022

Departed: 12/10/2022 (Watkins Glen)
Obituary Preview: David A. VanAmburg, age 79, of Horseheads, NY passed away at home on Saturday, December 10th, 2022.
David was born in Watkins Glen, NY on December 28th, 1942, the son of the late William and Lena (Colunio) VanAmburg. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1962 and served in the US. Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He married MaryAnn Gay on August 1st, 1965 in Watkins Glen. He worked as the superintendent of packaging at US Salt Co. (formerly Akzo Salt Co.) for 30 years, retiring in 1997. Upon his retirement he drove bus for the Horseheads School District for a couple of years. He was a member of Horseheads Methodist Church.
David was an avid runner having completed The Wineglass Marathon and The Boston Marathon several times, as well as, running in local 5K's. This love for running started when he ran track in high school. In addition to running, he added cycling and rode all over counties wide.
During his high school years, he worked at Johnny's Lanes as a pin setter. This love of bowling carried into his adult life. He and MaryAnn traveled throughout NYS competing in tournaments.
Upon retirement, Dave and MaryAnn became snowbirds in their beloved "Bounder" to enjoy sunny Florida. Much to MaryAnn's chagrin, that Bounder and Dave never missed a Bluegrass Festival. He had a love for all kinds of music and his vinyl and cd collection is too numerous to mention.
David's love for his country was displayed everywhere he was. The American Flag could be found in his barn, garage, t-shirts, living room, and on and on.
According to him, the greatest baseball team of all time was The Yankees. Jim is a Boston Red Sox fan and the banter between the two was hysterical. Along with the Yankees, the greatest football team was the 49'ers. And in true fashion, they won against the Buc's when they weren't supposed to.
Some things we will miss is Dad's glue jobs "Let 'er slide", his calls to Jim when it snowed to ask how much he got (Dad always had more), his "expertise" of what roads to take when traveling- we never seemed to do it right. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and often times we'd have to remind him they were kids and not professionals. Poppa-we hope you have endless Pepsi, Pizza, black jelly beans, bubble gum and Fig Newtons. We Love You!
Dad lived large, had definite opinions, Loved Us in his way that we didn't always understand. His heart truly never left Watkins Glen and his beloved Seneca Lake.
David is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, MaryAnn (Gay) VanAmburg; daughter, Dawn (John) Nasakaitis of Horseheads; son, James (Katy) VanAmburg of Centre Hall, PA; four grandchildren, Jakob Nasakaitis, Mackensie (Cole) Berry, Emma Latchet, and Ava VanAmburg; two great grandchildren, Waylen and Callum Berry; sister, Nancy (Denny) Rodabaugh of Watkins Glen; brother, Joe VanAmburg of Sarasota, FL; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his son, Michael David in 1969 and brothers, Jack, Tom and Ted.
