What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community of the deceased's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help notify friends and acquaintances of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The goal is to provide a concise yet meaningful summary of the person's life.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the obituary more personal and memorable.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to learn about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be published.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary can include humorous anecdotes or personality traits that reflect the deceased's spirit. This can help make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites. Many libraries also maintain archives of local newspapers that can be searched in person or through interlibrary loan programs.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or my own website?

Check with the original publisher (newspaper or online platform) to see if they have any restrictions on republication. You may need to obtain permission or provide proper attribution.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary, published on websites or social media platforms. It allows for wider reach and easier sharing with friends and family.

How long does an online obituary stay available?

This varies depending on the website or platform. Some online obituaries remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period.

Can I add updates or corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the original publisher to request changes. They may have procedures in place for making updates or corrections.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory and support a cause they cared about.

Can I write an anonymous obituary?

In most cases, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be a public acknowledgment of someone's passing, and anonymity may raise questions about authenticity.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the original publisher immediately to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistakes and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use an obituary as a template for other types of writing?

Absolutely! The structure and style of an obituary can be adapted for other biographical writing projects, such as profiles or tributes.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary can serve as a therapeutic outlet for those coping with loss, allowing them to process their emotions and share memories of the deceased with others.

How do I preserve an original copy of an obituary?

You can save a physical copy of the newspaper or print out a digital version. Consider laminating or framing it for preservation.

Can I create a memorial webpage or website instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Memorial webpages and websites offer a flexible way to share memories, photos, and stories about the deceased. They can also serve as a central hub for collecting condolences and sharing updates.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+-inclusive obituary?

Yes. Be respectful of the deceased's gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationships. Use language that reflects their authentic self and avoids heteronormative assumptions.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the obituary.

How do I balance honesty with tact when writing an obituary?

Be truthful about the deceased's life while avoiding hurtful or sensitive information that might cause distress to loved ones. Focus on celebrating their achievements and qualities rather than dwelling on flaws or controversies.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Yes. Be mindful of cultural and religious traditions surrounding death and mourning. Research specific customs and protocols to ensure sensitivity and respect.
