Ernestine Whitted Wooten - March 10, 1925 - January 05, 2024

Departed: 01/05/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Ernestine Whitted Wooten was the fourth child of the eleven children born to Earl and Mable Rue Whitted in the city of Goldsboro, North Carolina. She began life on March 10, 1925, and departed this life on January 5, 2024 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. She was a great educator and humanitarian who sought to learn as much as she could about various academic disciplines and to use that knowledge to better the lives of people in the Goldsboro community and all over the State of North Carolina.
Mrs. Wooten was educated in the Goldsboro City School system where she graduated from Dillard High School in 1941. When considering furthering her education, she often told the story of how her father told her education was not complete until she finished college. Following these words of wisdom, she quickly applied for admission to Winston-Salem Teachers college where she was accepted and from which she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.
She began her professional career teaching the first grade at School Street School in Goldsboro. Throughout her adult life, she worked tirelessly to educate children and to teach them to strive for excellence. Even today, people who were fortunate enough to be taught by her are still remembering the excellent way in which she instilled in them a love of learning. Having been a great educator and a great civic leader, Mrs. Wooten was well known for her devotion to working in her church, in the Goldsboro community and in the State of North Carolina.
At an early age, she became a member of First African Baptist Church in Goldsboro where she served in several different capacities. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served on the Deaconess Board and chaired numerous committees. For 30 years, she worked with the Sunshine Choir which she established at First African to help the children learn to enjoy singing and to instill in them Christian values. To enhance their joy of being in the choir, Mrs. Wooten took the children on several trips outside of Goldsboro. One of those trips was to Washington, D.C. where they had lunch in the Congressional Dining Room, visited the National Zoo, and presented a concert for Day Care Center children and other employees at the United States Department of Labor. She also worked diligently to help the church meet their financial and membership goals.
Mrs. Wooten was very much involved politically. As a politician, she served as chair of the Wayne County Democratic Party during which time she worked on numerous political campaigns. On one occasion, she led a group of fellow democrats on a train trip to Washington, D.C to participate in activities related to the Presidential Inauguration of William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States. Mrs. Wooten always treasured the pictures taken with then “Bill” Clinton during a campaign stop here in North Carolina at Wilbur’s Barbecue.
She also served on the Wayne County Board of Elections and worked at the Democratic headquarters in Goldsboro helping to organize volunteers in the community to go out and canvass and inspire others to vote. Personally driving people to the polls was a usual activity for her. A great testament to all of the work Mrs. Wooten did politically, was being named Democratic Woman of the year by The Democratic Women of North Carolina in 1976.
Mrs. Wooten was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Epsilon Phi Omega Chapter in Goldsboro where she served in many leadership capacities. A highlight of the many years she served in Epsilon Phi Omega was being named “The First Living Legend of the Mid-Atlantic Region, in 2023. Mrs. Wooten was also a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a member of Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni and Friends, Inc., as well as several other civic organizations.
She is survived by her son, John Henry Wooten, Jr. (Georgetta); her daughter, Nancy Victoria Wooten Coor; a granddaughter, Pamela Wooten Spencer; and two great-granddaughters, Abrianna Spencer and Alysse Spencer; a sister, Ruth Whitted Britt (Eddie); and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Wooten will lie in repose on Friday from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St, Goldsboro, NC 27530. The Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony will begin promptly at 6:00 PM.
Mrs. Wooten will lie in repose on Saturday from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. The celebration of her life’s devotion, which was service to God and mankind, will begin promptly at 11:00 AM at Frist African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
Her mortal remains will be laid to rest in the Elmwood Cemetery, 900 W. Brick Street (Hwy 117 South) Goldsboro, NC.
The family will assemble at the residence in preparation for the funeral cortege. Resolutions, Condolences, and Letters may be emailed to haskinsfuneralhome@gmail.com or faxed to (919) 734-0080.
