Dr. Donaldson Grier Woods - May 28, 1933 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Black Mountain)
Obituary Preview: Donaldson Grier Woods, 90, of Montreat, passed away February 23, 2024 at the Veterans Home in Black Mountain, NC. Dr. Woods was born May 28, 1933 in Asheville, N.C. to Samuel Baker and Isabel Grier Woods. As the son and grandson of Presbyterian missionaries to China, Dr. Woods demonstrated an unwavering commitment to missions throughout his life in word and deed.
Family and friends fondly remember his kind spirit, uncanny wit and wisdom, and generosity. Dr. Woods never met a stranger and could connect with anyone at any age due to his contemporary knowledge and a breadth of interests ranging from sports, the military, history, theology, geography, computer science, languages, and gardening. His ability to uphold his end of a conversation was only matched by his patience to listen attentively.
Dr. Woods served as a lifelong pastor with the Presbyterian Church USA. In the 1960s, some of his most satisfying service was to historical black churches in the south which brought both he and his family criticism publicly and in the dark of night. He never wavered in his commitment to racial equality and breaking down barriers.
Dr. Woods was also an educator and modeled lifelong learning. He served on the faculty of several universities teaching computer science. The merging of his dual degrees of Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Computer Science led him to work in Asia for over 20 years at which time he spearheaded an international student exchange program and ministered to those in hardship circumstances. Even long into retirement, he and his wife organized and led several missions teams deep into the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and partnered with Samaritan’s Purse and local churches to bring relief.
Dr. Woods was happy wherever he found himself but particularly enjoyed vacationing in North Myrtle Beach where he shared many getaways with extended family through the years. Above all, Dr. Wood’s greatest source of happiness and pride was indeed his family. He loved his daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren deeply and always delighted in their presence.
Dr. Woods also inherited a devotion to tennis from his father who was a renowned tennis player, coach, and Virginia Tennis Hall of Fame member. All who shared the court with Dr. Woods would experience in tandem a fierce competitor and humble gentleman. Competitively he won various championships in singles and doubles competitions. He also showed a commitment to the next generation by coaching in a manner that instilled grace and respect both on and off the court.
Dr. Woods is survived by his wife of 60 years, Charlene Orr Woods; two daughters, Laura Isabel Woods and Lucy Woods McEntire (Bryant); seven grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Chang, Rebecca Woods Trump (Jason), Audrey Paige, Brenna Joy, Campbell Grier, Della Hoi Ching, and Emory Bryant McEntire; and three great-grandchildren, Sophia Charlene, Rowan Mckenzie and Callum Augustus Trump.
A private memorial service will be held for the family at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be announced later in the spring for family, friends, and the community. The service will be livestreamed at that time.
Memorials may be made to the Black Mountain Home for Children.
Arrangements are in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals in Black Mountain. Online condolences can be shared at https://www.harwoodhomeforfunerals.com/memorials/dr-donaldson-woods/5386275/index.php.

Arthur J. De Jong - February 24, 1934 - January 26, 2024

Departed: 01/26/2024 (Black Mountain)
Obituary Preview: Arthur J. De Jong passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024 at age 89 at the Givens – Highland Farms retirement community in Black Mountain, NC. He had battled the effects of dementia for several years.
Arthur Jay De Jong was born to the Reverend Peter A. and Anna (Vander Schaaf) De Jong on February 24, 1934 in Patterson, NJ. The son of a minister in the Reformed Church of America, he spent most of his years growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Sioux Center, Iowa. He considered Sioux Center his hometown where he attended junior high and high school. Art’s college years began at Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, Iowa, but he transferred to Central College in Pella, Iowa at the end of his freshman year. He graduated from Central College in 1956 majoring in Political Science and Geography.
He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan in 1959. It was while in Seminary, he met Joyce Van Doorn. They were united in marriage on December 21, 1957. While still in Holland, their oldest son Mark was born.
After graduating from Seminary, he accepted a position as the Assistant Pastor at the Reformed Church in Metuchen, New Jersey. While in New Jersey, their oldest daughter Beth was born.
In the summer of 1960, he accepted a position as Chaplain at his alma mater, Central College. And the couple, along with their two small children moved to Pella, Iowa.
Three more children, Paul in 1961, and twins Ruth and Richard in 1962 were born.
In 1962, he was awarded a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Psychology from Princeton Theological Seminary.
In 1971, Art was granted a Doctor of Science of Theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Art worked at Central College for 18 years in a variety of positions; Chaplain, Director of Counseling Services, Professor of Philosophy and Religion, and Assistant to the President.
During his years in Pella, he used what little free time he had woodworking. He personally made many of the family furniture pieces, including a grandfather or grandmother clock for each of his children.
In 1978, Art accepted the position of President of Muskingum College in New Concord, OH. He served Muskingum for 9 ½ years during a very difficult period. He led the college out of financial exigency to a position of sustainable financial health. In 1986, after a $19 million dollar fund raising campaign, a new Athletic Center was completed. In addition, under his leadership, the faculty at Muskingum developed a new basic education curriculum, and designed a college-level program for students with learning disabilities which became nationally recognized. Undoubtedly, the highlight of his years at Muskingum, was a trip to Egypt to personally award Egyptian President Anwar Sadat an honorary doctorate degree on behalf of the Presbyterian Church.
Art was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Central College on May 21, 1988.
In the summer of 1988, Art moved on to the position of President of Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington and remained there until 1992, leaving behind a balanced budget and a successful $15 million centennial capital fund campaign.
With their children now all grown and starting families of their own, the De Jongs moved back east to Black Mountain, North Carolina. After a short stint assisting Montreat College, Art retired from higher education.
At age 60, Art was diagnosed with colon cancer. He endured almost a year of chemo treatments. He walked through his neighborhood every day without fail. And he remained focused on fulfilling his next goal, to open a wood carving and bowl turning shop. And that dream was realized when the Tortoise and the Hare opened on West State Street in downtown Black Mountain. He specialized in turning wooden bowls and turtles out of burl.
After about 10 years, he tired of the demands of keeping a retail establishment open and closed the business, though he did not stop carving bowls. That gave Art and Joyce more time to travel in the United States and overseas.
In addition, they took each of their grandchildren to an Elderhostel program, just them and the grandchild.
In 2005, Joyce was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer and the De Jongs moved to the Givens Highland Farms retirement community. She died in November 2007.
A year later, Art married Alida Grady in a ceremony at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church with their children and many of their grandchildren in attendance.
In addition to enjoying wood carving and bowl turning in his retirement years, Art was an avid birder and wildlife photographer. Many of his bird and wildlife photographs have been displayed throughout the Givens Highland Farms facilities.
Art De Jong is survived by his wife, Alida Grady; five children, Mark (Julie) De Jong of Douglasville, GA., Beth Cook of Avoca, WI., Paul (Jessica) De Jong of Winchester, VA., Ruth (Mark) Anker of Cambridge, OH., and Richard (Jeanne) De Jong of Brevard, NC.; as well as seven grandchildren, Matt Anker (Stephanie), Tom Anker (Sarah), Annelise Hagedorn (Jacob), Marielle (Cabell) Brand, Megan De Jong, Morgan De Jong (Carmen), and Emma De Jong, and 6 great grandchildren; Luke Anker, Georgiana Anker, Juliette Anker, Alene Hagedorn, Gerrit Hagedorn, and Ezra De Jong; sisters, Jane Van Oss, Shirma Huizenga, and Mary Trevison, and brother Marvin De Jong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Peter A. and Anna De Jong; his wife, Joyce Van Doorn De Jong; and his brother, Peter J. De Jong.

Mary Ross Anderson Kells - January 16, 1934 - January 14, 2024

Departed: 01/14/2024 (Black Mountain)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ross Anderson Kells passed away peacefully on January 14, 2024, two days shy of her 90th birthday. Born January 16, 1934, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mary Ross was raised in the small railroad town of Etowah, Tennessee. Her father, William Ross Anderson, was the dentist in town, and her mother, Banilla Brock Anderson, was a homemaker. Mary Ross was their only child.
Mary Ross showed wonderful musical talents from an early age. She loved being a majorette, and she had a beautiful singing voice. She sang and played violin on an east Tennessee radio station each week. After she began attending Peace School for women in Raleigh, North Carolina, as a junior in high school, she was part of a national talent search in Nashville, TN. She developed pneumonia right before the competition and was warned not to sing, but she showed her always indomitable spirit and competed, nonetheless. As a result, her singing voice broke and never came back. So, Mary Ross turned her full attention to playing keyboards and enjoying what would be a life full of popularity, kindness to all, and strong Christian faith.
After two high school years and two college years at Peace, Mary Ross attended Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, where she received a Music Education degree in 1957. She was an accomplished pipe organist and pianist. The year she graduated from Stetson, Mary married the love of her life, Dean Kells, also a Stetson graduate. They began their life together in Weirsdale, Florida. Mary played the organ for Weirsdale Presbyterian Church, and Dean began his long career in education as a band director at Lake Weir High School.
In 1967, Mary and Dean moved to Gainesville, Florida, as Dean pursued advanced degrees. Mary also attended classes at the University of Florida, and she was the organist at University Lutheran Church across from the campus. They then settled in Ocala, Florida, in 1968, where they remained for nearly 20 years. Throughout these years, Dean and Mary were very active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Ocala, Florida. Mary was the organist and also became the Church Administrator, directing the affairs of the large downtown church with devotion and precision. Mary and Dean had an especially big impact on youth. Dean was the director of the Youth Choirs, and he and Mary directed the Youth Group for many years. In addition, Mary served for two years as an elementary school teacher, taught Music Theory classes at Central Florida Community College, and enjoyed playing for local musical productions.
Mary and Dean “retired” in 1986, but they were not done with work. They became co-directors of the Presbyterian Church’s Montgomery Conference Center in Keystone Heights, Florida. Together, they helped the center expand significantly. Then Dean and Mary purchased “The Glass House,” a bed and breakfast in Montreat, North Carolina, that allowed them to provide affordable lodging during the summers to Presbyterian groups coming to the Montreat Conference Center. Dean and Mary enjoyed this opportunity until 2008 when they moved to Highland Farms in Black Mountain. Mary played the piano and organ for churches around the Buncombe County area and also taught herself to play the harp. She performed it often, always to great accolades. When Dean died in 2015, Mary remained at Highland Farms, where she nurtured many friendships.
Surviving family members include son, Ross, married to Michelle (Edgewood, NM) and daughter, Deanne, married to Bobby Bryant (Ocala, FL); grandsons, Jacob Kells (Sonoma, CA) and Bruce Wallace (Punta Gorda, FL); granddaughters, Risha Kells Broom, married to Prell (Lake Jackson, TX), Hallee Kells Nguyen, married to John (Albuquerque, NM), and Kellsi Wallace Booth, married to Chris (Washington, DC); great-granddaughters, Bailey and Anna Michelle Broom; and great-grandson, Liam Ross Nguyen. Georgia Harvey, Mary’s cousin (Richmond, VA), and sister-in-law, Shirley Halleen (Sioux Falls, SD) complete the family circle.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
