Obituary Preview: Port Allegany - Barbara H. Burgason, 95, of, Kane, formerly of Port Allegany, died Thursday (July 26, 2018) in the Lutheran Home at Kane, Kane, PA.
She was born Dec 31, 1922 in Titusville, a daughter of John W. and Florine Folwell Holtz, On June 17, 1950 in Pleasantville, PA; she married Theodore C. Burgason, who died December 2004.
Mrs. Burgason was a1940 graduate of Pleasantville High School and a 1944 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College with a bachelor of science in home economics.
Mrs. Burgason was employed by Penn Twp. High School, Verona High School, North East High School and Port Allegany High Schools\, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany where she was a Deacon and an Elder. She is survived by Two daughters: Audrey (Dr. Dale) McLaughlin of Kane, PA and Carol (Dr. Christian) Howard of Port Allegany, PA, Two sons: Barry (Carolyn) Burgason of Old Town, MA and Daniel (Jill) Burgason of Hilliard, One brother: John W. Holtz of Pleasantville, PA 9 grandchildren: Lt. Col. Sloan D. (DR. Merritt) McLaughlin DDS, Nels A. (Meghan) McLaughlin, Corinne Howard, C Ross (Jan Himmelreich) Howard, Chase (Jessica) Howard, Emma Burgason, Johanna Burgason, Haley Burgason and Carl Burgason 6 great grandchildren
Mrs. Burgason was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother Kenneth A. Holtz of Warren, PA.
Following her wishes there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday July 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany with the Rev Garen Smith, officiating A time of fellowship and reception will follow the service in the church social room.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Port Allegany, the S.W. Smith Library of Port Allegany or your own local library.

He was born Aug. 13, 1941 in Bradford, a son of George W., Sr. and Grace F. Raught Banks.
Mr. Banks was a graduate of Bradford High School. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1961 to 1962. He is survived by:
two brothers: Ralph A. (Beatrice) Banks, Sr. of Rew and James J. Banks and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne S. Banks and a sister, Faye Banks.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 11 A.M. To 12 Noon at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, where funeral and committal services will begin at noon with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor of the Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Willow Dale Cemetery, Bradford.

Obituary Preview: Port Allegany - Rosemarie E. Cummings, 93, of Port Allegany, passed away Wednesday (November 1, 2017) in the Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.
She was born Sept. 19, 1924 in Coudersport, a daughter of Harvey Pritt and Louise A. Weiss Palmatier. On Oct. 14, 1950, in the United Brethren Church of Port Allegany, she married Francis E. Cummings, who survives.
Mrs. Cummings was a 1943 graduate of Port Allegany High School and had worked at North Penn Gas Co., the American Extract Co., the Barron Tan Testing & Research Co. of Port Allegany, and finished her working career at L.H. Lincoln and Sons of Coudersport on Oct. 31, 2001.
Rose was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America from 1948 to the present, and had served as the District Deputy for RNA, was a member of AARP, was a life member of the P.A.F.D. Women's Aux., and was a member of the Eldred First Church of God.
Rose enjoyed her family and loved to have them all together for gatherings.
In addition to her husband, Francis, of 67 years, she is survived by one sister, Wanita H. Lane of Turtlepoint, and many loving nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Al, Joe, and James "Grant" Miller and one sister: Louise Kazimer.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 105 N. Main St, Port Allegany, and Monday from 10 -11AM at First Church of God, 140 S. Main St, Eldred. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM in the church with the Rev. James A. Kazimer, Pastor and the Rev. Daniel Manning, co-officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Obituary Preview: Smethport - James "Jim" Henry Sample, 77, of Smethport, passed away Saturday (October 7, 2017) at his home in Smethport.
He was born April 6, 1940 in Rasselas, PA, the son of John "Jack" S. and Carmella Margaret Allegretto Sample. On April 20, 1963 in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport, PA, he married Georganne Wright, who survives.
Mr. Sample attended Wilcox schools and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School class of 1958 and attended the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Mr. Sample drove truck for his dad and worked at the Johnsonburg Paper Mill as a young man. On June 24, 1963, he began working for National Fuel Gas in their Clermont office, where he stayed for 15 years. In 1978, he took a promotion and moved to Oil City where he worked in Safety Compliance for NFG. In 1981, he took the job of Sr. Foreman in St. Marys, where he worked until he transferred to Kane in 1986. He was promoted to Asst. District Forman and retired in 2002.
Jim was a member of the Wilcox Lodge #571 F&AM and a past member of Smethport Odd Fellows, the Coudersport Consistory and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport. His interests had included hunting with his family and friends, especially those special friends of Camp Beechwood. In the past 3 years he had started raising bees and shared that hobby with his daughter, Brooke. He and his wife were able to make many trips after his retirement and were able to visit 48 of the 50 states. They especially enjoyed their time spent in the West.
All family was important to Jim and he will be greatly missed by them, but he formed a special bond with his grandson, Thomas, who loved trains. He built a large track in the basement for them to enjoy time together. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: two daughters: Cheryl Lynn Sample of East Smethport and Brooke (Nick) Wolosewicz of Smethport one son: Reid S. Sample of Smethport
6 grandchildren; Axel, Austin, Autumn, Caleigh, Thomas and Jacob (Poppa's Little Jake). 3 Great Grandchildren: Isaiah, Greyson and Oaklin four sisters: Jean Swanson of Wilcox, Joanne (Dave) Andrus of Howard Siding, PA, Joyce Smart of Clyde, NC, Julie (Tim) Valentine of St. Marys, PA
one brother: Joseph (Kathy) Sample of Hickory, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Jeff and Harry "Buck" Sample and seven sisters Janet Howard, June Sample, Janie Barber, Elmira Smith, Betty Allegretto, Leone Sigworth and Gertrude Northrop.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 11 at 11:00 am in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Smethport with the Rev. Joann Piatko, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport. A Masonic service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

Sharon worked for Allegheny Coatings of Ridgway, where she retired in 2010.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Ridgway. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing. She also was a good seamstress and enjoyed sewing. She was known as the "Mushroom Lady" around the Ridgway area. She is survived by: one daughter: Jessica Thielges of Smethport two sons: Cory Dulski of Scranton, PA and Marshall (Danielle) Dulski of Clermont six grandchildren: Sadie, Zarek, Lilly, Owen, Ayden and Alana one brother: David (Mary) Swaim of Strasburg, VA and her former husband of 12 years, John Vincent Dulski of Smethport
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary is also survived by her mother Carolyn Carr of Brockport, PA and Brother Randy and wife Kathy of Ridgway, PA and sister Patty and husband Jim Buehler also of Ridgway, PA, many nieces and nephews, and Todd Gorrell for his companionship in her final years. Mary Kay will be remembered for her kindness, laughter, and her love of cooking.

He was born Sept. 5, 1931 in East Smethport, a son of Raymond M. and Vera M. Putt Lynch. On Dec. 22, 1954, in Smethport, PA, he married Donna M. Earl, who died March 21, 1997.
Mr. Lynch was a 1950 graduate of Smethport High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1950 to 1953, during the Korean Conflict.
Harold worked for the Quaker State Refinery and Petrowax of Farmers Valley for 33 plus years, until his retirement in 1993.
He was a member of American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport, the Smethport Country Club, Smethport Sports Boosters, was a former Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball coach for many years, and was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates Fan. Harold loved to play golf. He is survived by: three daughters: Sandra (Robin) Maynard of Smethport, Sharon (Lawrence) Linnan of Fredericksburg, VA, and Sue Lynch of Vancouver, WA two sons: Steven Lynch of Turtlepoint and James (Adele) Lynch of Tampa, FL three grandchildren: Jackie Good, Angie Simmons, and Krystal Glass four great-grandchildren: Donna Good, Tyler Simmons, Katy and Jaron Glass several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren one sister-in-law: Jane Lynch of OH
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Harold was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and an infant niece.

John F. McElroy - August 05, 1927 - September 14, 2017

Obituary Preview: Gansevoort, NY - John F. McElroy, 90, formerly of Smethport, died peacefully September 14, 2017 in the home of his son and daughter-in-law.
Born in 1927 in Coudersport, John grew up on a farm nearby, the fourth of four children born to Egbert and Hertha McElroy Mosch. He was the president of Coudersport High School's class of 1945. From 1946 to 1947, John was a bandsman in the U.S. Army. Touring occupied Germany and Austria, he played saxophone in a military orchestra that entertained troops.
With the help of the G.I. Bill, John graduated from Mansfield University in 1952 with a degree in music education. He later obtained a Masters in Education from the University of Buffalo. John's career as a music educator started in the Morris, NY, Central School District, where the 1958 yearbook was dedicated to him. In 1963, John and his family relocated to the Buffalo area, where he spent the bulk of his professional career as a music educator in the Maryvale (Cheektowaga) School System.
Under John's tutelage, Maryvale's music programs excelled . Maryvale's student musicians became fixtures at the All-State Music Conference, and John's instrumental groups achieved a string of "A" ratings at annual spring evaluation festivals. John was active in the Erie County Music Educator Association as a director on the executive board. In 1983, he retired as music department head of Maryvale Schools.
In 1985, John and his wife, Jean, returned to their roots in northern Pennsylvania, relocating to Smethport. John enjoyed tending to his pond and extensive gardens. He was handy, an expert wood craftsman who built many beautiful clocks. Perhaps as a legacy, those clocks are now scattered among family members around the country. In his later years, John enjoyed wood intarsia and working with stained glass. Always a good hand at cards, John enjoyed the strategy and camaraderie of the bridge table.
John was an active member (and a choir member) of the United Methodist Church of Christ in Smethport. For 21 years, he was the volunteer director of Smethport's Christian Community Services, also known as the Smethport Food Bank.
John was predeceased in 2016 by his wife of 67 years, Jean. He is survived by a daughter, Carol (James), of Jacksonville, FL, a son, James (Brenda), of Gansevoort, NY, three grandchildren ( Alysha, Staci and James, Jr. ), a niece, and eight nephews.
John's family would like to express deep gratitude to the Community Hospice team. Their compassion, sensitivity and professionalism made the final leg of his journey as secure and comfortable as it could be.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 29, 2017, at 11 AM, at The United Methodist Church of Smethport, 601 West King Street, Smethport. Inurnment will be at a later date at Sweden Hill Cemetery, Potter County.

Wayne K. Mader - July 12, 1927 - September 09, 2017

Obituary Preview: Smethport- Wayne Keller "Bonner" Mader, 90, of Sena Kean Manor, Smethport, formerly of Scotland PA, died Saturday afternoon, September 9, 2017, after a long illness. He was born on July 12, 1927, the son of Orie and Jean Keller Mader of Ridgway, PA. He died on his mother's birthday. On December 29, 1950, he married Joan Doris "Jone" Willson, of Smethport.
Bonner was a star football and basketball player at Ridgway High School, but left school early his senior year to join the U.S. Navy. He received his high school diploma in absentia in May 1945, with eight of his other classmates who also joined the services before graduation. He enlisted in March 1945, and entered into active service on May 18, 1945.
Bonner served in various theaters of war, including in the Philippines, and was stationed in San Diego, Long Island and the Great Lakes. He served on various ships, including the USS ABSD-1, of which he was especially proud. He received the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and Letter of Commendation. He was discharged in August 1946. He immediately joined the Naval Reserves, but was never called to active duty. He was discharged from the Reserves on August 13, 1954.
Bonner attended what was then Clarion State Teachers College on the G.I. Bill, where he again excelled in football, baseball, and was president of his class, graduating in 1951. He taught school and coached football in the Smethport Area School District from 1952 to 1957. He and his wife then taught in Fort Myers, Florida, for one year, but returned to Pennsylvania in 1959 when Bonner was hired to teach at the Scotland School for Veterans' Children in Scotland, PA. He obtained a Master's Degree in Social Studies at Shippensburg University in 1966, and taught driver's education and coached football and basketball at Scotland School and was the Head Coach of baseball for many years at the school. He retired in 1986. He took great pleasure in attending the State Championship football game between Smethport High and the team from the Scotland School in 1992, which Scotland won 24 to 7.
Bonner enjoyed sports all his life and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pirates. For many years, Bonner and his wife spent a good part of the winter in Bradenton, Florida, watching the Pirates' spring training games. They also greatly enjoyed spending summers at the Willson family cottages at Canandaigua Lake and boating at Raystown in Pennsylvania.
Bonner was a member of the Elks Club #600, the Burt Aspen Legion #46, the V.F.W. #1599, the Chambersburg Club, Tall Cedars, and the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Jone Willson Mader, and his children, Melissa M. Schmitzer and her partner Frank Myers of Gibsonia, PA, and Robert Franklin Willson "Pete" Mader and his wife, Julie A. Mader of Smethport. He is also survived by four beloved granddaughters: Kelsey Jean Mader and her partner Jordan Farrow, Emma Willson Mader, Renee Brooke Schmitzer and Marie Nicole Schmitzer, as well as sisters-in-law, Deborah Willson Babcox and Louise Dahlquist Mader, and many nieces and nephews. Bonner was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Keith Allen Mader, who died in January, 2016, also at age 90 years.
There will be no visitation. A memorial celebration of Bonner's life will be held later at the convenience of the family.

He was born July 9, 1937 in Port Allegany, a son of Gordon and Marion Green Barnard. On August 24, 1979, in Port Allegany, PA, he married Grace M. Barr-Austin, who survives. Mr. Barnard was a 1957 graduate of Port Allegany High School and was employed in maintenance at Pittsburgh Corning Corp. of Port Allegany, PA. retiring in 1995
He enjoyed golfing, running, and spending time at the Wellness Center in Port Allegany. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three sons: Donald W. (Natasha) Barnard of Reno, NV, Gary T. Barnard of Port Allegany, and James (Loretta) Austin of Maui three daughters: Shari (Scott) Austin-Dudley of Shinglehouse, Patti Austin of San Diego, CA, and Marci (Mike) Austin-Harlow of Wimber, PA

Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family and serving the Lord. He was a devoted member of the Regular Baptist Church of Smethport, where he was the AWANA Club Commander for 20 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: one daughter: Kari R. (Clinton) Compton of Smethport two sons: Karl A. (Jordan) Rinamon and Kurt D. Rinamon, both of Smethport two grandchildren: Russell and Opal Compton, along with 2 others on the way two sisters: Janet (Jerry) Russell of Smethport and Laurie (Kevin) Burford of Port Allegany one brother: Henry W. Her final employment was at Corning in Bradford, where she was a line loader, retiring in 1986.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star; Phoenix Chapter No. 15 and was a former member of North East Harley-Davidson Dresser & Touring Association with her husband for many years. She enjoyed riding motorcycle, traveling, cooking and dining out. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: three sons: Blaine (Donna) Puller of Smethport, Raymond (Gail) Puller of Brookville, and Roy (Jodi) Puller of Williamsport five grandchildren: Jessica Ward, Justin Puller, Brent Puller, Ethan and Kaycee Puller six great-grandchildren: Wynn Puller, Eva Ward, Alanna Puller, Ainsley Puller, Rachel Ward and Silas Puller
