Ruth E. Anderson - July 21, 1928 - March 04, 2022

Departed: 03/04/2022 (Coatesville)
Obituary Preview: WEST BRANDYWINE, PA - Ruth E. Anderson, age 93, of Freedom Village, passed away peacefully on March 4 due to aortic stenosis.
Ruth lived a life of faith and service.  She was a volunteer extraordinaire – choir member, Scout mother, church librarian, A.F.S. host mother; and in later years, elementary school reading aide, Freedom Village Singer, Good Neighbor, and Sing-Along leader.  Ruth was a saint - among the kindest and most gentle persons. She was a wiz at working with people and solving medical insurance and billing issues.  Her Sunnyvale Clinic patients often brought her homemade treats to thank her for her assistance.  She taught us how to climb trees, dissect a frog, use a microscope, fish, swim, skate, rock hunt, garden, sing countless songs, devour books and love movies.  And most importantly, how to love and get along with one another.
The youngest of four, Ruth was born in July 1928 to Norwegian immigrants Solveig (Berg) and Odd E. Lieberg, Sr., in Northwood, ND where her father co-owned the general store.   Like many Norwegian-American families the Liebergs spent summers “at the lake” (Cotton) in northern Minnesota. The family used kerosene lamps for light, a wood stove to cook, a hand pump to get water, an outhouse for a toilet and the lake for fishing, swimming, boating and bathing.  After her father’s premature death in 1944, Ruthie and her mother moved to Minneapolis where she graduated from West High School and later, the College of Medical Technology.  In 1946 Ruth celebrated her 18th birthday while crossing the Atlantic with her mother on the S.S. Stavangerfjord - a long-awaited 6-month trip to visit family in Norway after the country’s 5-year occupation during WWII.  (She made many more trips to Norway in later years to visit her dear sister, cousins and friends.)  Ruth also adventured westward to work at Glacier National Park the summer of 1948.
Ruth met her beloved Burt at a University of Minnesota Lutheran Student Association mixer. They married in Minneapolis in 1950, then moved to Bloomington in 1955, where they raised a family for 25 years.  Ruth & Burt enjoyed a dozen years in Santa Clara, CA and then retired to Hockessin, DE before re-locating to Freedom Village when it opened in 1998.
Ruth was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Over the years Ruth and Burt were active members of Lutheran Churches in MN, CA, DE and PA.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Warren (2002), husband, Burton H., of 55 years (2006); brothers Earl, Odd, Jr., and Thor Lieberg; sister Gerd Saethre (Oslo, Norway); sisters-in-laws Glada, Adaline, Helen, and Alice Lieberg; Berg and Lieberg cousins, and many dear friends.
Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kristin A. & Karl E. Bennett (Hockessin, DE), son, Erik B. Anderson (San Jose, CA); daughter-in-law, Toril Gulbrandsen Anderson (Minneapolis); beloved grandchildren, Timothy, Erik T. and Daniel, Laura (Chris) and Samuel, and cherished great-granddaughters, Aubrey and Athena; as well as dear family and friends in the U.S. and Norway.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the staff at Freedom Village, as well as to Dr. Eugene Ferguson (and Dr. Goldblum) for their kindness and care over nearly 24 years.  And to Southeastern Hospice and Innovative Home Services staff for their loving care over the last 3 months.
Please join in celebrating Ruth’s life by viewing the memorial slides and service (when available) via the links below; and by sharing your favorite memories with loved ones.

Obituary Preview: Marlene Antoinette Karmilowicz, 82, of Coatesville, passed away Friday, November 19th at home with loved ones by her side.  She was the beloved wife of Jon Karmilowicz with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.  Born in Coatesville, she was the loving daughter of the late John and Nellie Lahm (Pacana).
She was the loving mother of Jon (Chris), Kimberly (Charles), Lynn and Susan (Kelsey); and grandmother to Lauren, Sara, Hailey, Nick, Meredith and Michael.  She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Norman Karmilowicz who, along with his family, loved her.
After graduating from Scott High School (Class of 1957), she was employed at the Lukens Steel Mill in Production Control.  With the money she earned, she bought her own car, a 1960 white Mercury convertible with red interior and a Cherrywood bedroom set.  She went on to become a busy homemaker and a wonderful Mother.   She loved driving her children and their friends to all their sporting events and activities.  There was always a hot meal at dinner time and presents under the Christmas tree.
She was also the President of the Polish American Citizens Club for a number of years.  Mom cherished the friendships and the dear women of the P.A.C.C.
She enjoyed the outdoors and could sit on her front porch for hours.  She enjoyed travelling to South Dakota, Montana and California (to name a few).  She loved taking drives thru the local countryside, looking for deer and having lunch at Shady Maple.  At 7:00 p.m. you knew Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune would be on the TV.  She also enjoyed watching baseball and football; reminiscing of walking from the West End with her mother to watch the football games.  She crocheted many a blanket in her day and was famous for her Apple cake.
Mom thought of others before she thought of herself.  She honored her elder relatives.  Caring for her own parents and visiting with cousins.
Mom was a strong, beautiful and courageous woman.  She stout-heartedly fought cancer and dementia.  She was brave and showed so much courage in the face of adversity.   She was resilient, developing her own coping mechanisms.  Mom never gave up and fought for life till the end.  Her bright smile and sincerity could break your heart and did infinitely so.
Listening to her talk of her childhood memories and whatever else was on her mind was privilege and an honor.   Those memories and her advice will be cherished.
Mom is truly an inspiration, a beautiful soul.

Departed: 11/05/2021 (Coatesville)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn A. Ashenfelter, 79, died at home on November 5, 2021, following a lengthy illness. Sons Mark and Scott were by her side as she passed.
A lifelong resident of Coatesville; Carolyn, born on Pearl Harbor Day, was the daughter of the late John and Mary Kish. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Leon C. “Bones” Ashenfelter, Jr.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Dennis, and her sister, Barbara Kish (Mahoney). In addition to her children, she leaves behind a sister, Diana McCarthy.
A 1959 graduate of Coatesville High School, Carolyn was a stay at home Mom before beginning her work for the Coatesville Area School District.  She worked in various capacities during her career, including working as a reading specialist, a library aide, and as staff in the child development classroom.
A gifted baker, Carolyn often kept busy baking cakes in the evenings after work, filling orders placed by friends and co-workers. Often, she would bake cakes for special occasions, while sometimes she baked them just for her family to enjoy. Carolyn baked hundreds (or more) of cakes over the years, and everyone loved them and the delicious frosting she made.
Carolyn was also a loyal pen pal to many. Long before the internet, people close to Carolyn would often find a large envelope filled with letters, newspaper clippings, recipes, and magazine articles waiting for them in their mailboxes. If you had an interest in something, she would always find things to send to you about it. “Snail Mail” from Carolyn was better than any email you'll ever receive.
Carolyn enjoyed riding the bus to Penn State football games with her beloved husband, the Krapfs, and lots of Nittany Lion fans, getting there early to make coffee for everyone, and always bringing a cake for the tailgating.
Carolyn also loved planting and caring for her flowers, especially her cherished pansies.
Despite struggling with Parkinson's Disease, a stroke, and other significant challenges, Carolyn never let her problems change who she was. She remained a devoted mother and loyal friend to many. Her pure and beautiful smile remained intact until the end. Her sons would like to thank the staff of Brandywine River Valley Home Health and Hospice for their care and compassion during her final months.
