Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and express condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include a brief biography, notable achievements, or personal anecdotes that capture the essence of the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos, videos, or audio clips to accompany the written obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines on how to submit an obituary, including any required forms, deadlines, and payment information.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or videos. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries while they're still alive. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. You can store your self-written obituary with your important documents or share it with your loved ones.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or witty one-liners can help to capture their essence and make the tribute more relatable and engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

When sharing sensitive information such as cause of death or personal struggles, it's essential to be respectful and considerate of the deceased person's privacy and their loved ones' feelings. Use discretion when deciding what details to include or omit.

Can I update or correct an obituary after it's been published?

If you need to make changes to an already published obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was posted. They may have specific procedures for updating or correcting errors. Be prepared to provide supporting documentation or evidence for any changes.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries are often published immediately after submission, while print newspapers may have longer lead times due to production schedules.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on special occasions such as anniversaries or birthdays. Many online platforms allow you to create a permanent memorial page where you can store the original obituary and add new content over time.

What's the purpose of a guest book or condolence message section in an online obituary?

The guest book or condolence message section provides a space for friends, family, and acquaintances to express their sympathy and share memories of the deceased. These messages can be a comforting way for loved ones to connect with others who are grieving.

How do I respond to condolence messages left in an online guest book?

You can respond privately through email or messaging services provided by the online platform. Alternatively, you may choose to post a public response in the guest book itself. Be sure to thank each person for their condolences and acknowledge their kind words.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can post a link to the online obituary or create a separate post with key details and a photo.

How do I ensure that an online obituary remains accessible over time?

Maintain access to online memorials by keeping track of login credentials and ensuring that accounts remain active. Some platforms offer permanent archiving options; inquire about these services when creating the online obituary.

Can I create multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes, you may want to create different versions of an obituary tailored to specific groups such as colleagues, friends, or family members. This allows you to highlight different aspects of the person's life and relationships.

What's the role of an obiturary writer or funeral home in creating an obituary?

An obiturary writer or funeral home staff can assist with writing and editing the obituary content. They often have experience crafting tributes that honor the deceased while meeting publication requirements.

How do I preserve physical copies of printed obituaries?

You can preserve physical copies by storing them in acid-free folders or scrapbooks specifically designed for archiving paper documents. Consider laminating or framing copies for added protection.

Are there any specific regulations or guidelines for obituaries in certain industries or professions?

Certain industries like law enforcement, military, or medicine may have specific guidelines for obituaries due to security concerns or professional protocols. Research these regulations before submitting an obituary for publication.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial fund information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including details about charitable donations or memorial funds allows mourners to make meaningful contributions in memory of the deceased. Provide necessary information such as organization names and donation instructions.

How do I handle international obituaries or those requiring translation?

If you need to publish an obituary in multiple languages or cater to international audiences, consider working with translators or using online platforms that offer translation services.
