Franklin Pendleton - March 24, 1939 - June 06, 2023

Departed: 06/06/2023 (Nashville)
Obituary Preview: Franklin D. Pendleton March 24, 1939 - June 6, 2023
Frank Pendleton—a devoted husband, father, beloved “Dandy” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and co-founder of one of the nation’s leading actuarial firms—departed this life in Nashville on June 6, 2023 after a long illness. He was 84 years of age.
Frank was a son of John Burr Pendleton, Sr. and Maggie King Pendleton. Predeceasing him were both parents; brother John Burr Pendleton, Jr.; sisters Betty Lee Pendleton Stiddum and Doris Marie Pendleton Swift; and son Reed Harrington Pendleton.
Surviving Frank are his wife of 35 years, Micki Early Pendleton, as well as sons Bradley Pendleton (Zee), Keith Garstin (Calvert) and Christian Garstin and daughter Nicki Wood (Tom). His grandchildren are Lia Dameron (Dylan), Margaret Anne Betz (Ches), Bitsy Pendleton, Franklin Garstin (Ellie), Robert Garstin, Clay Garstin, Hunter Garstin and Eloise Wood. His great-grandchildren are James Dameron and Penny Elizabeth Betz.
“I’m from early Virginia and East Tennessee and Rome, Georgia dirt farms,” Frank wrote when asked about his ancestry. He grew up in East Nashville and attended Madison High School. There he played football for Coach Bill Brimm, whom he considered a lifelong mentor. He obtained an undergraduate degree at Sewanee, the University of the South, and then took part in graduate studies in mathematics at Yale University.
After working at National Life & Accident Insurance Co. for several years, Frank co-founded actuarial firm Bryan Pendleton Swats & McAllister in the early 1970s. BPS&M served corporations and institutions across several states in dealing with their pension, profit-sharing and insurance needs. He and his partners sold the firm to banking company Wells Fargo in 2000.
The mathematical bright lights of BPS&M attended a few actuarial conferences in Las Vegas early on, but they eventually found themselves banned from blackjack tables as their card-counting abilities became too obvious. Frank used to comment that if you could lay all the world’s actuaries end-to-end, stretching to the moon and back, nobody would care.
An avid runner for many years, Frank loved the Warner Parks, where a bench now commemorates him and his jogging buddy, the late Forrest Parmley.
For several years, Frank and Micki spent winters in Siesta Key, Fla., where they hosted visiting friends and family.
Frank’s family members would like to express special appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Clarendale Bellevue Place as well as The Meadows Senior Community Health Center, and to all family and friends who have supported them with their prayers and presence.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 14, from 12:00 to 2:30 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Pike, Nashville, Tenn. 37205, with the funeral immediately following. The Rev. J. Malone Gilliam and The Rev. David B. Kidd will officiate.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Warner Parks, the Alzheimer’s Association or Alive Hospice.

A year after, he became chief engineer and was responsible for the design of more than 40 airports across Tennessee as well as additions to others during his six-year tenure. He then formed a consulting engineering/ architecture firm which he later sold to his employees in order to devote full time to real estate development and construction. He developed over 25 apartment complexes, including two student housing projects, “Campus Crossings” at MTSU, housing over 1,400 students. John’s firm designed or developed numerous large subdivisions totaling in excess of 4,500 residential lots. Catherine Gail Tanner - August 27, 1956 - June 01, 2023

Departed: 06/01/2023 (Nashville)
Obituary Preview: Catherine Gail Tanner, “Cathy”, was born on August 27, 1956, to parents Marlin Fred Tanner and Vema Ruth Williams Tanner in Linden, TN. Her siblings were older brother Ricky Dale Tanner, younger brother Joseph Lynn Tanner, and sister Pamela Jean Tanner. Cathy passed away at her home on June 1, 2023.
Cathy is survived by her first son, Jason Johnson, wife Amanda, and granddaughters Olivia and Marlynn; second son, Justin Johnson, wife Jessica, and grandson Henry; her brother Joey Tanner, wife Julia; nephew Aaron Tanner; niece Ashley Adams, husband Jeremy; and niece Mallery Sodeman, husband Rob; as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. Cathy’s mother, Vema, was her best friend. They would clean the house together every week just to spend time together and then go eat at Shoney’s. When her mother died, she would often say, “I can’t wait until I wake up next to her in Paradise.”
Cathy loved to shop, especially for jewelry, designer purses, and boots. TJ Maxx was her favorite store. She was known to surprise family members with gifts, home makeovers, and toys for the kids. Her generosity knew no bounds. She loved with all of her heart.
A perfect day for Cathy would simply be sitting by the pool with a good, salted margarita, listening to country music, and reading one of her celebrity gossip magazines. She was captivated by Lady Diana’s life, reading every story and watching every documentary. She became an expert on someone she could relate to, who also fiercely loved her two sons. Cathy was a “mama bear.” She defended Jason and Justin to anyone, including their dad. She loved them through their teenage years, which included a garage band where she had a special seat front and center. The two amigos were the joys of her life.
The Johnsons were an outdoorsy family; you might have called them “lake people.” Cathy loved nature and was a force of nature. She drove the boat as good as any man, ranging from competition skiing to getting her nieces, nephews, and friends up on water skis. She was the designated boat driver and would spend hours pulling her sons behind the boat. Justin said she never complained when he fell every 10 seconds learning new tricks on his wakeboard; she’d just whip the boat around and pick him up. She had a need for speed, loved the power and the feeling of control, and kept all of her vehicles spotless.
Cathy was an all-around country girl. She loved gardening and being outside. She loved horses and, much like horses, was absolutely terrified of snakes. She loved Chanel perfume, and all her friends knew when she was near. She was particular about her hair, entrusting a single person with her blonde locks for decades. She loved country music, especially George Strait. Our friend Cathy was generous, loved her family, and enjoyed life, laughter, and a good fight. This was her legacy. Whenever she said goodbye, this is what she would say: “I love you, baby.”

Paul Deinert - September 21, 1948 - June 01, 2023

Departed: 06/01/2023 (Nashville)
Obituary Preview: Paul Deinert, 74, passed away at his home in Franklin, Tennessee on Thursday,  June 1, 2023 as a result of complications of Progressive SupraNuclear Palsy (PSP).
Paul was born September 21, 1948 in Los Angeles, California to Allen H. and Palma Lee Deinert. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Reseda, California in 1966 where his high school counselor told him he wasn’t smart enough for college and his best bet was to become a ditch digger or work in construction. However, like many men during that era, upon graduation, he immediately enlisted and went into the U.S. Navy. He served four years, much of his time spent on the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. Proud to serve his country, Paul was also in the U.S. Army Reserves during the 1980s-1990s.
Not one for digging ditches, Paul decided to give college a try and loved it so much, he spent many of his adult years trying to obtain one degree or another and successfully obtained three: B.A. in Political Science- Kent State University, Masters in Nursing- Vanderbilt University, and Masters in Business Administration- Lipscomb University. His education helped him obtain his career goals. Paul spent about 25 years of his life working as an outside plant engineer for various telecommunications companies. In the 1990s, he made a career change to healthcare and in 2018, retired from Cigna where he was the Director of Health Services- Clinical Research.
Paul was born with wanderlust in his soul. He traveled to all 50 U.S. states and the Philippines; all of the Canadian provinces, except Nunavut; and numerous other countries: Mexico, Vietnam, Singapore, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Denmark, and Sweden. He had plans to visit many more countries before PSP robbed him of his mobility and cognitive abilities. In 1971, Paul met and married his wife, Chelsea, his partner in travel and life. Together, they moved over 25 times and lived in numerous states: California, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Washington, and Tennessee. Typically moving themselves, they often looked like a cross between people playing an elaborate game of Tetris and a modernized reenactment of The Beverly Hillbillies. The frequent moves allowed Paul to take his family on vacations and camping trips to national parks and other places of interest all over the nation.
As much as he enjoyed traveling, Paul had other hobbies. He loved watching and playing sports. He played baseball for school and rec leagues from grade school into his 20s. He always rooted for the San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed playing card games such as pinochle, gin rummy, cribbage, and hearts. He liked getting out to run errands or have lunch. He never minded waiting, because he was always striking up conversations with strangers and making friends and acquaintances wherever he went. So as his loss is felt on earth, undoubtedly, he’s already made a myriad of new friends above.
Paul is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Chelsea; his son, Michael of Columbia, TN; his daughter, Robin (Ron) of Old Hickory, TN; his son, Patrick of Columbia, TN; his brother, Allen (Christine) of The Villages, FL; his brother, Gary (Dawn) of The Villages, FL; his brother in law, Melvin (Linda) of Ft. Myers, FL; grandchildren: Joseph (Harika) Suvak of Murfreesboro, TN; and Hayden and Riley Burke of Marietta, GA; great-grandchildren: Kyle and Alex Suvak of Murfreesboro, TN; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Allen H. and Palma Lee; his in-laws, Charles and Ellen Mishey; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Raymond Erald Denault - July 09, 1937 - May 26, 2023

Departed: 05/26/2023 (Nashville)
Obituary Preview: Raymond Erald Denault passed away Friday afternoon, May 26,2023 at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Tennessee. He was surrounded by loved ones. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
He was born July 9,1937 in Burlington, Vermont to Raymond Victor Denault and Lauretta Blanche Janson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Kathryn Bott. He was the youngest of four siblings: Elaine Nihill, Phyllis Keating (still living), and Donald Denault.
To all that knew him, he was larger than life and enjoyed 85 years of amazing experiences. He graduated in 1955 from Stevens High School in Claremont, New Hampshire where he participated in many activities such as student council, football, basketball, and track and field, breaking (and for many decades maintaining), several athletic records.
He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy as part of the Patrol Squadron Seven NAS as an Aviation Electronics Technician aboard the USS Constellation out of Brunswick, Maine.
After he was discharged, he went to prep school at Franklin Technical Institute. He then attended Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana and continued his active involvement in a wide range of scholastic and athletic activities. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Business Administration. He met his wife, who was attending a nearby college, at a winter activity social event and later married her after graduating.
Ray’s career path focused on electrical engineering, management of projects, production, and financial analysis. After Indiana Tech, he worked for ACF Electronics as a Project Engineer before his employment with Grumman Aircraft Engineering as a Site Director in 1965.
He loved to talk about his time with Grumman and during his tenure there they manufactured engines for fighter planes and held NASA’s contract for the Apollo Lunar Module Project. Grumman was the chief contractor supporting the first spacecraft to land humans on the moon. Six of the thirteen lunar crafts that Grumman made were launched (the others were never launched). His department worked on one of the components that went in each lunar craft. One of the crafts he worked on the LM-2 was a test craft which is proudly on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. When helping Grandchildren with math homework Ray loved to comment how they “made it to the moon with slide rulers and an abacus”. Despite his joking, he was highly adaptable and readily accepted computer systems that were making waves in the technology sphere.
Ray had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and continued his education while working and raising a family. In 1972 he attended Harvard University Graduate School to study business and financial programs. Continuing his studies, he attended the University of Oklahoma seeking a degree in Industrial Development and Business in 1972.
He was passionate about helping others create and maintain successful businesses. He lectured across New England at various Universities and Colleges on the topics of accounting, financial/cost analysis, time management, successful workplace relationships, managing stress in the work environment, and troubleshooting businesses. Ray helped develop a “Business in Vermont” series on Vermont Educational Television Network (later Vermont Public/PBS). For four years he was a panelist and had a five-minute spot-on Channel 22. Once, he was even featured on a Good Morning America break! In addition to his business advocacy, he stood up for the relatively new concept of Student Loans for higher education that expanded knowledge for all. He often called upon his own family for examples of how impactful a loan could be so a student could achieve a degree they may not otherwise have an opportunity to pursue. He also designed and facilitated seminars on signage and assisted town zoning officers in the planning process.
Ray and Mary then settled in Barre, Vermont where they raised their five daughters; Laura Denault-Peatman, Michele Denault, Simone Murray, Suzanne King, and Monique Denault-Estes who carry on many of his traits of: family orientation, hunting, fishing, education, and love of nature. Ray always empowered his daughters (and later grandchildren) to do whatever they set their minds to, just like him.
In 1985, the family purchased Twin State Signs, Inc. Together they created a true family business, with the philosophy of always family first. The intent was they would be able to provide jobs for family members if needed. All his daughters, sons-in-law, and many of his grandchildren did work at the company at some point in their lives with some staying on through the years. They sold the company in 2019 which transitioned Ray into permanent retirement at the age of 82 when he moved to the Nashville, TN area.
As if his active career and family life wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he was always knee deep in activity and community projects or boards. He was involved in several Catholic communities over his lifetime. Ray was also a member and chaired several clubs: Canadian Club, Elks Lodge No 916, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 91, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4218 Post, selectboards, coaching softball, and refereeing collegiate soccer.
He was a passionate and skilled outdoorsman who loved to rabbit hunt with his beagles, hunting deer and fresh and saltwater fishing which helped provide the family table with a wide range of nature’s food.
Ray was happiest when spending time with his sprawling family of 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren (with two more on the way). He was affectionately referred to as Pepérè by his grandchildren. He ensured that each grandchild shared some special connection with him; making them feel like they were special.
Though he may have passed on, his spirit remains forged within us. Raise a glass, a bottle, or an ice cream cone in his honor.

James "Jimmy" L. Denson - January 31, 1933 - May 22, 2023

Departed: 05/22/2023 (Nashville)
Obituary Preview: If you are reading this smile, because that is what James would like to see.
James L. Denson (Jimmy), Age 90 slipped quietly from this life on May 22, 2023 after a long battle with lung cancer.   He is survived by his son Danny Denson of Kingston Springs, TN; daughter Lisa Denson of Brentwood, TN; Grandson Jason Alexander of Kingston Springs, TN; sister Joan Jones of Hendersonville, TN; two nephews and countless friends. Born in Nashville, TN in 1933, he is pre-deceased by his wife and teenage sweetheart Annie and also by his parents, Robert and Thelma Denson Cook.
James left his signature on Nashville’s skyline as a leader on commercial construction projects all across the city. From his early days with Foster & Creighton, making the front page of the Nashville Banner in 1953 installing the very first parking meters on Capital Blvd downtown, to his retirement at age 70 from The Parent Company, Jimmy was a well-respected driving force ensuring each project he managed came in “on time & under budget”.  He loved doing his part to help transform the city into what it is today.
While Jimmy was witness to remarkable change & growth in Nashville, his values remained remarkably unchanged – family was first, friends were life-long and work was never finished.  He lived his life with utter humility, a quiet strength and loving respect for everyone he came in contact with. These were the values he worked to instill in his children and grandchild – not by lecture or reprimands, but by example.
One of Jimmy’s favorite commercial building projects was the impetus for the logo of the Nashville Predators and their mascot Gnash. Jimmy served as Superintendent on construction of First American Plaza (now UBS Tower) at 4th and Union in downtown Nashville. Blasting more than 30 feet into limestone during excavation for the high-rise bank, his crew hit the remains of a cave complete with a Saber-tooth tiger skeleton holding 9 inch fangs, bones of a mastodon and bones of 4 humans. Jimmy hosted many archeologists at the site, including Carnegie Museum of Natural History as this was a very unusual find for the area.  Jimmy and the team decided to engineer around the cave with steel & concrete and install an access hatch for later expeditions.  The Saber-tooth cat & other remains were on display in the bank lobby for many years and later moved to Bridgestone Arena with portions moved to the Smithsonian. Mr. Jimmy found great joy in taking folks to see the Smilodon once on display and tell the stories of a once in a lifetime find.
Other Nashville landmarks James provided oversight for during the course of his long career include:   Vanderbilt Stadium, the first Nashville Convention Center on Broadway, Nashville Electric Service, Vanderbilt Law School Addition, Vanderbilt Hospital West Wing & Heliport, Kirkland and Alexander Hall at Vanderbilt, Ford Glass Plant, UBS Tower 4th & Union, Maryland Farms Gateway 1, Burton Hills 3 & 4, David Lipscomb University Library, St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, and SunTrust Bank Music Row (now Truist) just to name a few.  While re-building St. Ann’s Episcopal Church after the Nashville tornado in 1998, Rector Lisa Hunt placed a time capsule tribute to Jimmy inside the cornerstone of St. Ann’s for a job well done bringing the building back to life. Although James received numerous awards for various projects throughout his career in commercial construction, St. Ann’s was a favorite for forging new friendships as well as saving a litter of newborn kittens that had taken up residence in the basement of the sanctuary while under construction.
Although having great success in his building career, his greatest success and priority was his family. Everyone was always impressed with his energy and enthusiasm, for helping his family, his friends and neighbors.  James never met a stranger and he cherished greatly the life that was given to him.  He was known as a genuinely good guy and a very loyal, loving husband and father. Known for his great sense of humor, James loved to play jokes or to be the recipient of a good joke.  Jimmy, to all that knew him, was the definition of a smile. He enjoyed lively, passionate discussions about “real” country music, his huge vegetable garden or his fairway perfect green grass.  It is said that a man’s life can be measured by the positive influences he has had on others. James had that kind of influence – he was the guy everyone trusted as a friend, the guy who mentored new employees throughout his years as a contractor, and the guy who maintained the deep and eternal love for his wife, son, and daughter.  His positive spirit will remain in our hearts forever as we know he is in heaven telling St. Peter jokes and saving us all a seat!
Dad was a wonderful Husband, Father and Grandfather. He will be forever remembered as having a life well lived and being a man well-loved because to live in the hearts of loved ones is never to die.
A public celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held Friday, May 26th, 2023 at 10:30 am at Harpeth Hills Memorial Gardens, 9090 Highway 100, Nashville, TN 37221.  Burial will follow at Harpeth Hills. Memorial tributes can be made to the Harpeth Conservancy, 215 Jamestown Park, Suite 101, Brentwood, TN 37027 or Nashville Humane Association, 213 Oceola Ave, Nashville, TN 37209.
