Kim Mincey - April 27, 1963 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Buford)
Obituary Preview: Kim Denise Mincey of Buford, Georgia, passed away on April 18, 2024 following a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Jason; their daughters, Margaret and Mackenzie Mincey of Buford; her brother, Richard Mathis, Jr. of Cartersville, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Kim was preceded in death by her father, Richard Mathis, Sr.; her mother, Barbara Ann Mathis; and her beloved grandmother, Kate “Mimi” Carver.
Kim was born April 27, 1963 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. She was raised in Austell, spending her childhood summers either at her grandmother’s house or getting her money’s worth out of her season pass to Six Flags Over Georgia. She stayed in contact regularly with many of her childhood friends, especially her fellow Class of 1981 graduates of South Cobb High School. While she spent virtually her whole life in Atlanta’s suburbs, Kim always saw herself as a country girl, largely due to her grandmother’s influence. Some of the things she loved, in no particular order: being out in the sun, cornbread and buttermilk, tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches, Coca-Cola, Rod Stewart, attending K-pop concerts with her daughters, and watching true crime documentaries.
But her first and second loves were God and her family. Kim was a member of Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, and she had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus. She loved her husband and daughters more than anything else in the world. She was a “Mama Bear” in the truest sense, ready to go to any length to protect and to defend her girls – even though her over-protectiveness could frustrate them at times. She was the best wife and mother that her family could have ever dreamed of having. Our hearts are broken as we try to grasp the fact that she is gone, but we rejoice that she is now in the presence of the Lord, reunited with so many loved ones and friends who preceded her in death. We know that we will see her again one day. A celebration of life service will be held at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 28. The family requests that those who wish to remember Kim with a gift do so by making a donation to Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church – General Budget Fund. Charles Simpson - August 14, 1932 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Buford)
Obituary Preview: Charles Calvin Simpson, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He was born on August 14, 1932 to Harrison C. Simpson and Iris Foster Simpson and was the youngest of nine children. He spent his childhood in Atlanta, GA, where he attended Fulton County High School. After high school, Charles entered the United States Navy as a Seaman Apprentice and ultimately served his country as an Aviation Ordnanceman from 1951 to 1953, where he earned a National Defense Service Medal.
Following his service, he was a grocer with Simpson’s Food Town, which was started by his brother, Paul Simpson. Charles helped revolutionize and modernize the meat department, and Simpson’s Food Town quickly became a fixture in the community. Following this, he became a Manager of the Glenco Store in Decatur, GA. He later became a real estate broker, starting Charles Simpson & Associates where he trained many new agents. He pioneered the concept of home trading and is a past President and Board Member of the DeKalb Board of Realtors.
On August 9, 1952, Charles married the love of his life, Mary Jane Burks. They spent 68 years together, enjoying a life well lived. They started their mornings together reading the paper and laughing at the day’s comics. He and Mary Jane also hosted many board and card game nights for their friends who also were their lifelong travel partners, exploring locations like Hawaii, London, and Canada. Later in life, the two spent their free time volunteering together at the local hospital and participating in a walking club. Charles also stayed very active and was a runner well into his 70s. Charles was very dedicated to his churches, White Oak Hills Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Conyers, and 12Stone Community Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and small group leader. He had an avid love for baseball and was a little league baseball coach for many years, though his favorite tenure was as pitching coach for his grandsons, Chris and Jordan. In retirement, he could be found on the golf course or cheering on the Braves, the Falcons, and the Bulldogs -- he certainly was not a fair weather fan! He spent his final years at Sunrise Senior Living where he made lots of new friends and was dubbed “Mr. Wait A Minute” from his friends and caretakers. He would not let the dessert tray pass him by!

Marjorie Poy - March 16, 1931 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Buford)
Obituary Preview: On February 19, 2024, Marjorie Angela Poy (Chen) went home to be with her heavenly Father. She was born in Jamaica on March 16th, 1931 and was to be the eldest of six siblings. Although she was born in Jamaica, she spent most of her growing up years in China living with her grandmother. There she lived a colorful and widely varied life which included such incidences as seeing a tiger in the wild just outside her house and bandits stealing a water buffalo from the village. She had fond memories of her grandmother and her village as well as terrifying ones of surviving and witnessing Japanese soldiers torturing villagers and ransacking houses. She always had many stories to tell of her life there and she was excellent at telling them as vividly as though they had happened yesterday. She spoke several dialects of Chinese fluently and always slipped back into her native tongue in moments of excitement or emotion. She was sent to Hong Kong to become a nurse but rather than complete that training she found herself headed back to Jamaica at the age of 18, fleeing a communist takeover.
Back in Jamaica Marjorie worked in her father’s store while learning a new language, culture and even currency assisted by the patient teaching of her brother, Karl. It was here that she began a long-distance correspondence with Robert Poy, who eventually came to Jamaica and married her. With Robert she traveled to California where she once again began to learn a new culture. Robert and Marjorie moved back and forth from New York to California several times. They had three sons, Andrew, Benson and Corwin (Joe) all within a 4-year time span and she was immensely proud to be “A, B, C’s mother.” When she was in labor with Benson, she had to walk several blocks through a New York City snowstorm in order to reach the hospital where she would deliver him. She worked for several years at Alexander’s department store where she was known for her good-nature and industriousness. After Benson was married, she and Robert moved from New York to Atlanta, GA to be closer to family. Later she was joined in Atlanta by her brother, Trevor with whom she lived for many years. There she was a doting and busy grandmother.
Marjorie had a strong and vivacious personality that belied her small frame and a smile that lit up her whole face. She was always a beautiful and elegant woman, and her hands were always busy doing something—cooking, cleaning or creating. She was able to craft gorgeous dresses for herself and her granddaughter without any patterns and she could knit, crochet and embroider beautifully. Although sometimes serving as sous chef to her husband, she was also an excellent cook in her own right and made the fluffiest bao every Chinese New Year as well as delicious dumplings. She always drank hot tea even in the hottest Georgia weather and often insisted that whoever she was with do so as well. Marjorie believed in doing everything quickly and efficiently—whether it was washing up, ironing or just walking. She could often be seen smiling innocently while beating everyone at Mahjong or dominoes. Nothing was more important to her than her family who she served with every ounce of her being. She was an amazingly resilient and tenacious woman who withstood many changes and struggles. She will be remembered for her strength of character, her bravery and her strong love.
