Charlie was a true Newporter, growing up near Easton's Beach. He loved the water, and spent many happy hours swimming off of the Forty Steps. He attended Rogers High School where he graduated in 1953. A life-long football fan, Charlie played on the Rogers football squad as a student, and remained an avid supporter of the team for the rest of his life.

In addition to his passion for football, Charlie had a tender heart for animals. He loved to feed peanuts to the squirrels that scurried over his porch, and always made sure there were crumbs on the lawn for his feathered friends. His compassion and love for all creatures great and small was truly inspiring.

Charlie was immensely proud of his service in the United States Marine Corps, a chapter of his life that shaped his character and instilled in him the values of honor, integrity, and dedication. His time in the military was a source of great pride for him, and he always cherished the camaraderie and experiences he shared with his fellow Marines.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Martin Larry, and many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was predeceased by his sisters, Vivian Welch and Edna Weeks.

A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate Charlie's life will be held on October 18, 2023, at 1:00pm at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, where friends and family will gather to pay their respects and share fond memories. Burial will be private.

He was a graduate of University of Rhode Island and New England Tech. He worked as an electronics technician until his early retirement due to a progressive and debilitating disease; Spinocerebellar Ataxia. You may have seen Hugh around town enjoying live music, as he was a passionate and immensely knowledgeable music fan.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Irene Ebbitt, his children; Michala Ebbitt, of Allentown, PA, Kristina (Kevin) Kosinski, of Middletown, his sisters; Karen Ebbitt and Paula Ebbitt, of Cambridge, MA, and his grandchildren; Wes and Stanley Kosinski. He was a loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Of course, he will be greatly missed.

Robert retired from the United States Coast Guard in 1983 after serving 20 years. Mr. Dixon formed Commercial Marine Electronics to continue his passion of serving the marine industry by his expertise of the equipment and in the late 1980s became owner of Chris Electronics of New Bedford, MA. Robert's knowledge and experience with repairing the marine electronics created a well-known reputation within the marine industry.Robert had a passion for sailing including both leisure cruising as well as racing sailboats. Mr. Dixon enjoyed seafood and being on the ocean.He will be missed deeply by his friends and family.Robert is survived by his children, Christopher Dixon, and Jennifer Leddy (Robert), his brother, Kenneth Dixon (Kim), and his two grandchildren, Matthew, and Lorelai Leddy.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dixon, and his parents, George, and Edith Dixon.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd., Portsmouth.Services for Mr. Robert Dixon will be held on Thursday, August 25, at 11:00am at Connors Funeral Home. She left us on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022, in the early afternoon. She would tell you that how you react to change is what determines who you are, and to everyone who knew her, she was our model, our champion of just what true courage is. Though she lost her independence at ten years old, when an accident took the use of her legs away, mom never let her paraplegia stop her from living a long, courageous and productive life. The community has lost a pillar. One of mom's proudest achievements was being a founding member of Shake-A-Leg, a non-profit organization for people with spinal cord injury and other neurological problems. She served on the Board of Directors of Shake-A-Leg from 1983 to 1995. She worked tirelessly on the outreach program, traveling the east coast while bringing awareness and education to hospital and rehabilitation center audiences of the special needs and rights of people impacted by these injuries. Barbara served on the Board of Directors for the Newport Advisory Substance Abuse Task Force. She was a member of the Redwood Library, The Edward King House and the Middletown YMCA. Mom was an avid swimmer and adored her bi-weekly swims at the Y with her wonderful friends. Just to see her in that pool, floats on her legs, snorkel and mask on her face, was a lesson in joy and determination. Mom was a voracious and avid novel reader-the Redwood and Newport Public librarians would grab the latest novels and have Mario pick them up for her. She loved recommending favorites to her friends. Mom had artistic talent. She loved the art classes that honed her skills; she worked with several mediums: pastel, oils, acrylics and watercolor. And then we were all gifted by wonderful paintings! We are so grateful to have them in our homes.Mom's happiest times were the summers spent at the beach house, Third beach. Call on any sunny day and you'd find her up on the porch under the umbrella, slathered in sun lotion, stylish suit, hat and sunglasses on, smiling that gorgeous smile that just made you want to sit with her, sharing the piercing blue sky, listening to the gentle sounds of surf and summer. We are bigger because of you sitting beside us, true and strong, showing how this was a way to live. Thank you. We're adapting to this change; our hearts are broken open. She is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Mario A. Ruscetta. She also leaves her son Paul Ruscetta (Barbara) of Narragansett, RI; daughter Gail Ruscetta (Bryan Mack) of Caribou, Maine; and son Peter Ruscetta of Los Angeles, CA. Obituary Preview: On Friday, April 9, 2021 -- Days after joyously celebrating his 79th birthday, William C. Smyth Jr. of Tiverton, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.

William was born in Newport, RI to William and Gertrude (Scoville) Smyth. Graduating from Rogers High School in 1961, and known as "Billy" or "Bill" to his many friends and family members, he was known for his extraordinary work ethic and commitment to his family.

From a young age, Billy was eager to work and by the age of ten, he was delivering milk for Round House Dairy. Quite often, he could also be found assisting with Sunbeam Bread deliveries. During his younger adult years, Bill lived and worked in Florida and Colorado. However, he always found his way back to RI. Locally, he worked for Sears, Roebuck, and Co. in Middletown, and then became a highly-regarded plumber on Aquidneck Island. In 1978, Bill met the love of his life, Deon Andrews, at the Franklin Spa on Spring Street in Newport. Not long afterwards, they wed on April 5, 1979.

Bill is survived by his wife of 42 years, Deon Smyth, their children, Deidre Gauch (Mark) and William P. Smyth of Tiverton, his daughter, Lauri Atkinson-Esposito (Philip) of Texas, his brother, Harry Smyth (Diane) of Newport.

Bill -- or "Papa" will be dearly missed by his young grandsons, Brody and Myles Gauch. They were the light of his life, and he spent as much time with them as he possibly could. Even when he wasn't feeling well, he'd find ways to connect with them -- like stocking up on bait, buckling them into their car seats, and heading out to go fishing at the local ponds. Bill wanted nothing more than to put a smile on those little faces.

With his grandsons, he continued with the family traditions he established decades earlier with his now-grown children and looked forward to annual trips to Santa's Village in New Hampshire and, locally, to Edaville Railroad. He was an avid collector of model trains, and he could never resist adding to his Hot Wheels inventory. Bill was a kid at heart and he provided Brody and Myles with so many fun memories that will carry them throughout their lives.

Always ready with a joke to share, Bill loved making others laugh. He was a true role model for how to live one's life with purpose and joy, always appreciating the simple things that add up to a life well lived. Bill was selfless and loved his family more than anything else in the world and was not ready to leave them. He courageously fought both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for 6 years and even on the last days of his life, he continued to say, "I'm not giving up!"

Bill was loved deeply by his brothers- and sisters-in-law who provided immense support to the family for the past six years and especially during his final weeks of life.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertrude Smyth and his sister, Dianne Chandler.
