Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a keepsake for family and friends, and can be used to create a lasting legacy for the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or mortuary. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their accomplishments, awards, or notable achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and to the point. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most. You want to provide enough information to give readers a sense of who the person was, without overwhelming them with too much detail.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help bring the person to life and make the tribute more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. Some newspapers have online submission forms, while others require you to contact them directly via phone or email. Be sure to check the newspaper's website or contact them ahead of time to determine their specific requirements.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's not necessary to do so – your loved ones can write one for you after you pass away.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the person's name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help capture the essence of the person and make the tribute more relatable and engaging.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or conflicts surrounding the deceased's life or death, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. You may want to consult with family members or close friends before deciding what information to include.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, many families choose to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications may publish obituaries within 24 hours, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?
