He lived there until he went off to college in New England, then was commissioned as an officer in the Army when he graduated in 1966. He was honorably discharged after serving two tours in Vietnam, during which he was decorated for bravery. Upon returning to the States, he was drawn to the wilds of Alaska, where he learned to make traditional wooden dog sleds and put together a dog team that won second place in the North American Freight Championship. They spent several years together in Alaska before deciding to move south to Vermont to pursue their dream of living on a farm. They bought the old Dimock Orchard in Topsham, VT in 1975 and began the work of reclaiming the fields and orchards, which had not been worked by the previous owners. Over the years Tom cleared acres of hayfields, built barns and houses, raised sheep, pressed cider, worked with wood, and homeschooled his children. He loved Jesus Christ, his wife, his kids, his neighbors, his country, and his farm (in approximately that order). He is survived by his wife Donna; his children, Aurora McClain (Tom), David (Jen), Grace (Ely Stuart), and Justice (Rachel); and his grandchildren, Jack and Charlie. Please join us to celebrate his life and share food together at 4PM on Saturday August 14 at Peaceful Pastures Farm, 51 Karl Nye Rd, East Topsham, VT

Brian J Boland - April 15, 1949 - July 15, 2021

Departed: 07/15/2021 (Bradford)
Obituary Preview: Obituary – Brian J Boland
Brian Jeffrey Boland of Post Mills, VT died on July 15, 2021 at the age of 72.  Born on Long Island in Huntington, New York, he graduated from John Glenn High School in 1967. He received his bachelor’s degree in Art & Art Education from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY, attended Cornell University and returned to Pratt for his Masters Degree. As a thesis project Brian designed and built his first hot air balloon (as a large sculpture) and tethered it on the campus May 15, 1971. Brian and his young family moved to Farmington, CT where he had taken a position as an Art and Photography teacher at Farmington High School. It is a town and school that fondly remembers him still. While teaching he continued his interest in Hot Air Balloons, built several more, began flying them and earned his commercial license in 1973. Brian eventually gave up teaching at FHS to pursue a life in Ballooning, designing and building hundreds of Hot Air Balloon and Airship systems. He set several World Records in his own lighter-than-air aircraft, has flown all over the world and logged over 11,000 hours of flight time. Along the way he also received a fixed wing license. His many innovations in ballooning were freely shared with others. He was a natural teacher who shared his skills and love of aviation with many. He so enjoyed flying, that, if not flying with others, he took solo “therapy flights” every day he could (with great appreciation for the many neighbors and others who gave him rides back home!)
He purchased the Post Mills Airport in 1988. Today, Post Mills Airport is recognized as a world epicenter of experimental hot air ballooning and reflects Brian’s expansive personality and creativity.  It is home to the private Museum of Rusty Dusty Stuff, the Vermontasaurus, fire trucks, treehouses, and many other flying, driving, and floating creations which have graced local parades, lakes, rivers, and celebrations over the years. Brian’s impact on the Post Mills community will be long lasting.
Brian is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Margaret Boland, and his son, Jeffrey. He is survived by his life partner, Tina Foster, of Post Mills, his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Art Weyermuller of Myrtle Beach SC, and his brother, Kevin Boland of Winter Springs FL. He also leaves countless dear friends and colleagues from Post Mills, the surrounding area and from the near and far reaches of the worldwide Ballooning community. We will hold a celebration of his life on the airfield at Post Mills Airport on Sunday, August 1 at 2 pm. Please bring your stories and memories.  If you have any pictures you would be willing to provide for an exhibit, please bring them, and perhaps a little snack to share.  There will be some music, a chance to tell some tales, and time and space to enjoy the company of others and Brian’s indomitable spirit.  Bring your own chair if you can.  Due to Vermont now being in “high risk” COVID transmission status, we encourage masking.  We will also hold the Experimental Balloon and Airship Association gathering in September as previously scheduled

Michael A. Smith - October 12, 1968 - May 03, 2021

Departed: 05/03/2021 (Bradford)
Obituary Preview: South Ryegate, VT-Michael Alvah Smith, aka Mimi, 52, died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on May 3, 2021, after a short illness.
He was born October 12, 1968 in Berlin, VT the son of Alvah Smith and Betty Spooner. Michael graduated from Oxbow High School in 1986 and went on to work at several jobs, including Malden Mills, Bombardier, and most recently the Vermont State Hospital.
Michael had a love of muscle cars, music (especially metal) and sports. He especially loved watching NASCAR, and Jeff Gordon was his absolute favorite. He also loved watching Boston sports teams, and was a diehard Patriots fan. As with everything in life, he was passionate about each of these things, and would have a heated debate with anyone who said anything negative.
The thing Michael was most passionate about was his family. He loved his siblings, but it was his nieces and nephews that he had a soft spot for. He was an integral part of their childhoods, and this continued with his great-nieces and great-nephews, and even children who were not blood related. He was Uncle Mimi to so many, even before he adopted the nickname. He would drop anything he was doing to help them. He always had a hug and made everything fun. He had a love of music and would share this, whether just listening to it, or singing to and with you. He would dance, he would use goofy voices, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to bring a smile.
Michael was predeceased by his father, Alvah Smith, his mother, Betty Armour (nee Spooner), and his beloved sister whom he missed dearly, Laurie Williams (nee Smith), and many beloved aunts (especially Barbara Smith), and uncles.
Survivors include his sister, Darlene Chicoine and her husband, Roland of Millis, MA, sister, Beverly Ordway and husband, Bruce of West Topsham, VT, brother, Dale Smith of Elmore, VT, brother, Brian Smith and his special friend, Jen Thompson of East Topsham, VT, and Jeremy Smith and partner, Erin Finneran of East Topsham, VT, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins, who will miss him dearly.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at the ICU Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for providing wonderful care to Michael, and kindness to his visiting family. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service for close family and friends will take place at a later date. Arrangements are by Hale Funeral Home in Bradford, VT.

It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people of funeral or memorial service arrangements and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer may gather information from family members, friends, and other sources to create a comprehensive and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be suitable for an online platform, while a shorter one may be more appropriate for a newspaper.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. They may have specific guidelines for content, length, and formatting. Be prepared to provide detailed information about the deceased and payment for the publication fee.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing biographical information, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and storytelling.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain archives of past issues. Many genealogy websites and online databases also offer access to historical obituaries.
