James "Jim" R McCaffery - February 08, 1928 - March 18, 2022

Departed: 03/18/2022 (Mishawaka)
Obituary Preview: James (Jim) Richard McCaffery of Mishawaka, husband to Agnes Juliann McCaffery (née Bauters), died on a Lenten day, 18 March 2022, leaving behind a loving family who will miss him dearly, but who trust ultimately in the Lord’s promise of resurrection.
Originally of Chicago, Illinois, and born 8 February 1928, “Jim” was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McCaffery, and the brother of Jean Deskovich, who all predeceased him. In addition to his loving widow, Agnes, Jim leaves behind three children and their spouses: Timothy (Amy), Patrick (Cheryl), and Mary Ann Middlestadt (Monte); seven grandchildren: Patrick Brandon, Leslee (Jim), Kyle, Katherine, Merisa, Nicole, and Erich; two great-grandchildren: Layla and Audrey; and countless extended family members and friends whose lives he inspired through his gentleness and charity.
Jim, educated at St. Joseph Grade School (South Bend), graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1947 and then from the University of Dayton in 1951. Following his time in university, he was drafted into the US Army and served his country for two years during the Korean War. He married Agnes, the love of his life, on 8 September 1956. Following his service in the military, he entered into business with his father and cousins at the McCaffery Electrical Supply Co., where he worked for many years. He held a number of senior administrative positions and was also a leader in several active charities. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus #1878, an indefatigable Cubs fan, and a man ever loyal to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Jim was an excellent businessman and financier; yet his love for his gardens and his vegetables probably surpassed even his love for numbers. He was a loyal and devoted husband and father, an attentive and affectionate grandfather, and above all a pious and strong-believing Catholic. His virtue lives on in the lives of those persons who knew him, who seek to follow his example. His family members, especially his wife, Agnes, are eager to meet him again on the final Easter Day.
The family would like to extend its wholehearted thanks to the VA Hospital in Marion, Indiana, especially its superb staff, who attend so compassionately and selflessly to the veterans in their care. We are truly grateful for their tireless service.
The Funeral Mass will occur at 11:00 am on Saturday 9 April 2022, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 220 W. 4th St., Mishawaka, IN. Jim’s eldest grandson, who is a Dominican priest, will be officiating. A private burial with military honors will occur later in the spring at the Marion National Cemetery in Marion, IN.

Stephen A. Krupnik - January 01, 1955 - March 17, 2022

Departed: 03/17/2022 (Mishawaka)
Obituary Preview: Stephen A. Krupnik, 67, of Mishawaka passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2022. Stephen was born to the late Casimir “Casey” and Josephine (Speziale) Krupnik in South Bend, IN on January 1, 1955.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Velma Krupnik; stepdaughter, Amanda “Mandy” (Justin) Klopsch; one grandchild, due later this year; sisters, Paula Santa and Barbara Goldman as well as many extended family members and beloved friends.
Stephen attended Washington High School. As a young filling station mechanic, he met Keith “Red” Kaser, who brought Steve in as a partner in a used car lot on Lincolnway. Together they decided to open a pawn shop next to the car lot called Red’s Pawn Shop in South Bend.  Steve ran the pawnshop from its start in 1982. He built it into one of the largest in Indiana. Steve was instrumental in forming the Indiana Pawnbrokers Association (IPA) in 1990. Changes in state laws and guidance by the IPA helped pawnshops evolve into a more mainstream element of the local financial services industry. Mr. Krupnik authored books on responsible pawnbroking, developed a pawnbroker advisor program and communicated with thousands of pawnbrokers throughout the world. He was awarded the prestigious Pawnbroker of the Year award in 1999 by the National Pawnbrokers Association. He enjoyed helping people “quietly” and mentored many in the industry. In 2021 he received the Ron Stempkowski Lifetime Achievement Award at the Midwest Pawnbrokers Convention. After retiring from pawnbroking, he transitioned into voice-over acting and production.
Stephen, much like his stature, lived life large. He always treated the things he enjoyed with a passion that led him on many adventures and to wonderful people. Stephen was an award-winning demolition derby driver as well as an accomplished cook. As a food and wine connoisseur, he spent time with many renowned chefs helping to develop those skills. Stephen was also a patron of the arts with a deep appreciation for Blues music, sponsoring local music events and musicians. He was a sponsor of the former Michiana Blues Society and regularly presented the “Ole Harv” blues appreciation award at the Ribs and Blues festivals that were held at St. Pats Park. Steve was an accomplished ballroom dancer. He loved to dance with his wife Velma at Dan O’Day’s Dance Studio and with “the 100 club”. The family would like to thank David Jewell, Kathy Eash, Brian Walker, and Nurse Ron (Center for Hospice) for their support in times of need. Thanks also to Dr. Rafat Ansari and to Dr. Tran for outstanding care.
Visitation with friends and family will be on Friday, April 1, 2022, from 6-8pm in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Celebration of Life service will be held during the 10am to 12pm visitation on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
