Obituary Preview: Chester L. Longenberger, 89, of Monroe, IN, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 15, 1927, in Adams County, IN to the son of the late Otto and Hattie (Laisure) Longenberger. On May 10, 1959, he married Carol J. Heller.
He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, where he played the piano and organ for 73 years. At the church he also directed the hand bell choir for many years. Chester was a volunteer pianist at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne. He also played a weekly circuit at Woodcrest, Evergreen, Swiss Village, Christian Care, and Bluffton Regional. He was involved in many service clubs, the library, and many community events.
Chester worked as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 years of service. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol J. Longenberger of Monroe; 3 daughters, Lisa (Tim) Deam of Wright City, MO; Tracy (Mark) Donaghy of Berne, IN and Rhoda (Dary) Hirschy of Decatur, IN; 4 grandchildren, Elizabeth Landis; Christopher, Michael & Scherry Hirschy; 4 great grandchildren; Elijah, Kinsey & Josiah Landis; and Annette Hirschy.
He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Kenneth Longenberger; 2 sisters, Delores Mitchel and Ireta Jones.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017 at the Monroe United Methodist Church with calling one hour prior from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Pastor Char Allen will be officiating.
Burial will take place at the Ray Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #43.
Memorials may be given to the Monroe United Methodist or Child Evangelism Fellowship.

Obituary Preview: Colleen L. Linn 89 of Decatur, passed away on July 17, 2016 at Adams Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 14, 1927 to the late Cletus H. and Nina M. (Snyder) Miller. On August 1, 1947 she married Richard F. Linn he passed away on March 29, 2014.
Colleen was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority..Colleen was a vital part of the Winteregg - Linn funeral home staff, currently Haggard Sefton & Hirschy, working along side her husband from 1962- 1987.
She is survived by her two daughters Nancee Linn and Cathee (John) Graves both of Decatur, two grandchildren Kimberlee Hurst and Mark (Natasha) Graves also of Decatur, and three great grandchildren Avree and Zoee Hurst and Norah Graves.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy F.H. Burial will take place at the Decatur Cemetery. Rev. Randy Rossman will be officiating.

Obituary Preview: Gerald W. “Jerry” Toole, 77, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Ft. Wayne from complications of kidney disease. Jerry was born on December 9, 1938 to the late Charles J. and Olga V. (Wiebers) Toole. On November 6, 1964, he married Mary Jo Mink. Always quick with a joke or a story, Jerry liked to tell people he selected his sweetheart from the Sears and Roebuck catalogue because they met and started dating while working at Sears in Lafayette.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Jo, his son, Gary Toole and his wife Diana and young grandson, Roland, from Michigan; his daughter, Lori Einfalt and her husband Mark and three adult grandchildren, Riley, Kelsey and Jerry Connor Einfalt from Texas; his brother Mike (Vicky) Toole of Lafayette, and two sisters Sally (Jim) Stacey and Barbara (Ed) Carey from Otterbein, many extended family members and numerous close friends. Jerry Toole was preceded in death by his oldest son, Larry, and his youngest brother, Joe Toole, both of whom he loved dearly.
Born and raised in Otterbein, Indiana, Jerry spent most of his adult life in the community of Decatur. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He proudly served his country in the United States Army in Germany during peacetime. He also took great pride in his work. Jerry was a former Street Commissioner, he was self employed as a heavy equipment operator, and also worked for Monsanto, Setser Excavating, Randy Everett, and J & L Construction and Excavating. Jerry enjoyed being outdoors and delighted in taking his grandkids fishing and teaching them “skills” they would need in life. He was a great fan of racing and converted many family members into Nascar fans over the years. Jerry rooted for Notre Dame all his life, played a mean game of cards, liked to watch the birds and feed the squirrels from his back porch, took pleasure in a good soak in the hot tub, relished a cold beer with friends and savored two kinds of pie (hot or cold). He loved life and lived his well!
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 19th, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with calling from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Father David Voors will be officiating. A luncheon for friends and family will be held after the Funeral Mass in the Parish Hall. Burial will be in the Marion National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society or A.C.C.F. Angel Cancer Fund.
The Toole family extends heartfelt appreciation to family, friends, and the medical professionals who have supported Jerry over the years.

Rick was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He retired as a truck driver for Erie Haven. Rick was a Lance Corporal with the United States Marines, serving in Viet Nam; and a member of the American Legion Post #43.
Survivors include his four sons, Joe Hackman, Scott L. Hackman, Gregory L. “Bushy” (Kimberly) Hackman and Dalton P. (Kimmy) Hackman all of Decatur; two brothers, Michael Hartsough and Jeffrey “Willy” (Debbie) Hackman both of Decatur; and 4 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2016 also at the funeral home. Pastor James Voorman will be officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery.

She was a secretary for 47 years at Berne Furniture and a 1960 graduate of Adams Central. She is survived by 2 brothers, Merlin K. (Linda) Hedington, Monroe, IN and Vernon W. (Helen) Hedington, Decatur, IN; 3 nephews, Doug (Lisa) Hedington, Portland, IN; Kerry (Sara) Hedington, Monroe, IN; Brad (Lindsi) Hedington, Convoy, OH; and 1 niece, Nicole (Dean) Whitacre, North Baltimore, OH
She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Leon and Luther Hedington.

He was born on November 1, 1925 in rural Convoy, Ohio to the late Earl Fortney and Mable M. (Miller) Fortney. He was married on April 25, 1948 to Mona M. (Carroll) Fortney. She passed away on January 2, 2009.
He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Decatur, where he was in the Builders Sunday School Class. Arlo was a 1943 graduate of Convoy High School, where he was an accomplished athlete. He then served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. He was a lifelong farmer and he also retired after 25 years of service from K Mart Warehouse, Ft Wayne.
He is survived by 1 son, Monte G. (Rae Ann) Fortney of Ossian; 1 daughter, Mrs. Rosalind (Larry) Bailey, Trenton, Michigan; A sister in law, Sue Fortney of Ft Wayne; 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by 6 brothers, Eugene, Donald, Harold, Morgan, Esten, and Vance Fortney and 1 sister, Helen Plumley.

She was a Registered Nurse in Indiana, Oregon, and California and worked at various medical facilities throughout her career. Her final position was at Ben Hur Nursing Home in Crawfordsville, IN, where she retired from in 2000.
Ruby was an avid NASCAR fan and loved the Indianapolis 500.
She is survived by her son, Bob (Lisa) Ralston of Decatur; 3 brothers, William Herron, Jack Herron, and Charles (Jo) Herron; 2 sisters, Helen Rutledge and Mary (Norman) Abston; 5 grandchildren, Mandy (John) Kriegel, Jamey (Kyle) Clark, Nathan (fiancé Jacqueline Smith) Ralston, Trae (fiancé Rebecca Fox) Ralston, and Bailee Ralston; 4 great grandchildren, Alivia Reinhart, Adriana Kriegel, Lydia and Lyla Clark; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Jane Whipple.
Per Ruby’s request, a private service will be held with her family. Memorials may be made to the A.C.C.F. Nursing Scholarship Fund.

Obituary Preview: Richard K. “Dick” Des Jean, 90, of Decatur, IN, passed away at his residence on Sunday, December 20, 2015. He was born on December 31, 1924, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Cyril S. and Mary (Kipley) Des Jean; however he was raised by Frank and Florence (Kipley) Des Jean. On June 23, 1951, he married Julianne (Meyer), she preceded him in death on May 9, 2005.
He was member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was also a 1942 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School.
Dick served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked for 39 years for the United Telephone Company, retiring in 1985. He volunteered for 18 years at St. Joseph Catholic School.
He was a loving, compassionate, and caring husband and put his family above all else. He enjoyed babysitting and was a “taxi grandfather.” He was also a lifelong, die hard Chicago Cubs fan.
He is survived by 3 sons, Paul F. (Cindy) Des Jean of rural Decatur, R. Chris (Sue) Des Jean – rural Decatur, and Tim R. Des Jean of Phoenix, AZ; 4 daughters, Michelle M. (Joel) Knerr of– Convoy, OH, Katrina M. (Curtis) Rash of Decatur, Stephanie M. (Jeff) Sanderson of Decatur; Amy M. (Tim) Weaver of Decatur; a brother, Cyril S. Des Jean of Indianapolis; a sister, Joan Laurent of Decatur; 16 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Florence “Dolly” Diette and Charmaine Dean.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December, 22, 2015 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 2:30 p.m.

Visitation will be from Noon-4:00 Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home and also on Monday, Dec. 21st from 9:00-10:30 a.m.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at the funeral home with his cousin, Pastor Rick Casebolt officiating.

Survivors include his parents Donald and Rita Gerke of Decatur; two brothers, Tim (Janeen) Gerke and Troy Gerke; a sister Tina (Jim) Barker all of Decatur; nieces and nephews, Blake (Brittany), Josh (Heather), Brooks, Brian (Kelly), Bailey, Trey and Kelsey; great nieces and nephews, Ashton, Josie, Lincoln, Emmery Rose and Sawyer.

Obituary Preview: Dr. John E. Doan, 83, a longtime resident and family physician in Decatur, died peacefully in his home in The Villages, Florida, on Sunday, December 13, 2015, surrounded by the love of his family.
John was born in Decatur on January 5, 1932 to John M. Doan and Doris (Eldridge) Doan.
John graduated from Decatur High School and proudly served his country in the Korean War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. After the war, he obtained his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. After a one year residency in Daytona Beach, FL, he returned to Decatur where he served the community as a family physician for more than twenty five years before moving to Florida and devoting the remainder of his career to emergency room medicine. He retired in 2000.
John’s profound love of country led him back to military service in the early 1980’s as a member of the Indiana Army National Guard, and upon his move to Florida, he transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve, 919th Special Operations Wing, from which he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1999. During active duty assignments, he participated in military operations in Panama, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
John loved the sport of wrestling. During the 1970’s, he served as the team doctor for the United States Wrestling Team, traveling to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. He served as the team doctor for the Bellmont High School wrestling team and as the tournament doctor for the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tournament for decades. John was inducted into the Indiana State Wrestling Association as a contributor to the sport.
John was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Gladys (Doan) Steury, and his brother Dr. Robert L. Doan. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Donat) Doan and their son Robert (Kirsten) of Deland, FL, and his sons Jon K. Doan (Sandy) of Lima, OH, Douglas E. Doan (Martha) of Decatur, daughter Marilyn Jo Sickafoose (Lynn) of Syracuse, IN., and their mother Barbara (Strickler) Carroll. John is also survived by his sister Annabelle (Doan) Heller of Decatur. John has eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at Haggard – Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Decatur Wrestling Club, or a charity of your choice.
