Alberta Embry - June 12, 1936 - January 21, 2022

Departed: 01/21/2022 (Mackinaw)
Obituary Preview: Alberta Bee Embry, 85, of Mackinaw passed away peacefully on Friday, January 21, 2022, surrounded by family members and with her favorite hymns playing, at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, IL, after a brief illness.
Alberta was born June 12, 1936 in Peoria, IL, to Emma (White) and Aaron Raymer and grew up in tiny Allentown, a few miles outside of Mackinaw. She graduated as valedictorian of her Deer Creek-Mackinaw High School class of 1954 and attended Illinois State University on scholarship for a year before joining the workforce. Career stops included State Farm Insurance, Caterpillar Tractor Co., First Security Bank in Mackinaw, Myers Propane in Mackinaw, and Pekin Insurance in Pekin. Despite never mastering a computer or the Internet, her typing and math skills were such that she helped usher in New Technology Age as an IBM keypunch operator at Caterpillar in the 1960s.
Survivors include: her children, Patrick (Trish Luna) Embry of Nashville, TN.; Kitty (David) Hessel of Washington, Utah; Bethany Cottrell of Danvers, IL, Jim Embry of Indianapolis, IN; and John (Tracy) Embry of Mackinaw; her sisters, Cheryl Love of Mackinaw, and Florence Rawlings of Minier, IL.; her daughter-in-law, Kristie Embry of Mackinaw; her grandchildren, Barbara (Rob) Kerns of Chesterfield, MO; Gabrielle Tarrow of Ypsilanti, MI; Michaelyn (Josh) Sherwood of San Francisco, CA; Alison Embry of Denver, CO; Sam Embry of Nashville, TN; Emily Embry of Bloomington, IL; Kate Embry of Mackinaw; and Abby Embry of Mackinaw; and her great-grandchildren, Annalise Tarrow and Isaiah Tarrow of Ypsilanti, MI; and her many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and in-laws of multiple generations.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and one son, Peter Embry.
Alberta — Bert to her friends and family — remained nonjudgmental and accepting of humanity and most generous with her time and in her faith. For many years, she taught a high school youth Sunday school class, directed the church choir, and was an integral link in the prayer chain at the Mackinaw United Methodist Church. She helped lead youth groups for a number of Habitat for Humanity trips to build homes from Oklahoma and rural Appalachia to Mississippi and Michigan. She formed and led a Cub Scouts troop before her children were even born.
As a community leader said recently, there’s no telling how many lives Alberta Embry has touched for the better through the years. She remained in touch with many of them through occasional telephone calls.
She would have made a fabulous schoolteacher. Instead, she instilled the love of reading in her six children, and in her retirement she helped in the classroom and lunchroom at Mackinaw’s elementary school as a volunteer. The students called her Grandma Bert, much to her delight, and her many younger relatives fondly called her Aunt Bert.
Her appetite for printed material — historical fiction to nonfiction to newspapers and magazines — was so well-known that she served as an unofficial critic of newly available books at the Mackinaw District Public Library, where she once served as an accountant.
Through the years Alberta remained actively involved with a number of civic groups in Mackinaw, included the Mackinaw history group, where she appreciated the small town’s rich history.
She enjoyed singing alto in gospel quartets and attending community concerts throughout Central Illinois. She would stand fearlessly in front of a reluctant group of adults and practically demand them to join her in singing.
Her children will remember the marvelous homemade Christmas tree made out of crepe paper one year when financial times were tight, and that she’d construct an entire circus scene out of painted empty spools of thread and yarn and pipe cleaners to top your birthday cake. And they’ll recall her disdain for housework, and her self-described “collecting bug” that left no nook or cranny unfilled.
If cats are said to have nine lives, Alberta coaxed about 14 lives out of her 85-year-old body. She survived any number of ailments through the years — leukemia, pneumonia, staph infections, and running over herself with her own car (not all that surprising, if you knew her), among them — but kept her mind and indomitable spirit intact very much to the end.
She even managed to wrestle her new cellphone to, if not a win, at least to a draw. We all will miss her very much, and she will miss us all. But not that darned cellphone.
Memorials may be made to the Mackinaw United Methodist Church, the Mackinaw District Public Library, or the charity of one’s choice.
A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned for later this year, when the flowers are in bloom and the ongoing pandemic is better behaving itself. Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home in Mackinaw is handling the arrangements.

Garza of Edinburg, Texas; six grandchildren, Chad William (Gina) Cornwell, Manuel James (Lillian) Garza, Brian Michael (Stella) Garza, Lauren Anne Cornwell, Emily Mae Cornwell and Jacob Matthew Garza; four great grandchildren, Nolan James Cornwell, Manuel James Garza Junior, Paityn Marie Garza, Rose Jasmine Garza and Paxton Thomas Cornwell.
Jim was a devoted caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He, along with his wife, Rhea, provided a happy home for their three children growing up on the family farm in rural Mackinaw, and later a second home for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim was a bright, innovative, wise farmer; diplomatic, never bragging, kind, stern, no-nonsense, but never mean, and never held a grudge. In his later years, his grandchildren and their wives described him as “chill.” He absolutely LOVED his craft of farming and was described by his father, Loran Cornwell, as a “MASTER Farmer.” Jim also LOVED his favorite past time, fishing in the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota around Appy’s Island or the lakes of Ontario Canada, wherever you could catch the most walleye and big northern pike. Jim began farming in rural Deer Creek right out of high school, but was soon drafted into the U.S. army during the Korean War. He was not sent to Korea, and was, instead, stationed near Manheim, Germany for two years. During that time, when on leave, he and an army buddy traveled and saw many of the famous sites of Europe. When he returned after serving his country, Jim resumed farming, married Rhea and settled down in rural Mackinaw, farming for his in-laws, Clarence and Mary Etta (Walker) Appenzeller. Jim was not afraid to try new things and later, with a mind for the future, set his sons up in farming by building a hog confinement operation, where together they raised and marketed over 4000 hogs a year. He was also a member of the Mackinaw American Legion. The three GREAT joys of his life were watching his twin sons, Kent and Keith, play football, and his daughter, Mary Frances, play volleyball and softball for Dee-Mack High and Illinois Wesleyan University and later his sons following him into the family business, both becoming farmers, working under his tutelage. He also enjoyed visiting his daughter, Mary Frances, and her family in Deep South Texas at Christmas, but not the summers …TOO HOT!
Jim was a faithful member of the Mackinaw Christian Church where his funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 17, 2021. Pastor Judith Thomas will officiate. A visitation will be from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2021 and a half hour before the service on Friday, both at the church, with interment following at Mount Zion Cemetery in Deer Creek. A meal will follow in the Mackinaw Christian Church Fellowship Hall immediately after interment. Masks are required and CDC guidelines will be followed. Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home in Mackinaw is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Mackinaw Christian Church or World Vision.

Wilbur L. Henneberg - July 08, 1933 - September 07, 2021

Departed: 09/07/2021 (Mackinaw)
Obituary Preview: Wilbur “Wimpy” Lloyd Henneberg was born in 1933 to George and Leta (Devening) Henneberg in Woodville, IL. He married his wife of 66 years, Wynona Katherine Ferguson, in Delhi Baptist Church on Nov. 12, 1955. She resides in Mackinaw, Illinois. Wilbur served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After returning home, he worked for Caterpillar Inc for 23 years and then started a new business venture as owner of W.H. Trucking. Wilbur's eventual retirement was a detriment to the crappie, bluegill, and bass population in Heritage Lake, which ended up in the fryer for his annual Labor Day family fish fries. Well into his 80s, Wilbur was riding his tractor down to the dock where he kept his well-stocked "minner" bucket. He also enjoyed turkey hunting in southern Illinois. When he wasn't in the boat, Wilbur was visiting on the porch with his family and friends, drinking Folgers coffee, and enjoying a healthy diet of bologna sandwiches. Wilbur passed away Sept. 7, 2021 at Snyder Village in Metamora after spending the day exchanging fishing stories with his family wishing he could drop one more line in the gap between the two docked pontoon boats. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and three sisters. Surviving are his siblings Robert Henneberg (Edith) and George Henneberg (Sandra) and his three children Kim Mitchell (Danny) and Bryon Henneberg (Jan) in Mackinaw and Kerry Henneberg (Jayne) in Bloomington. Memories of Wilbur's gruff orneriness will forever be cherished by his 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild -- many of whom grew up fishing on his dock and tinkering around his and Noni’s beloved cabin home. Wilbur's life will be honored at a graveside service with military honors at Mackinaw Cemetery on Sept. 14, 2021 at 10am with Bishop Mark Dubois officiating.  Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home in Mackinaw is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Mackinaw Rescue Squad Ambulance Services at 104 W. Madison Street, Mackinaw, Illinois.  The Henneberg family extends its sincere appreciation to the dedicated volunteers of this organization who provided such professional care to Wilbur throughout the years.
