Jack was born on 19 March 1932 in New Matamoras, OH. His father died when Jack was just 11 months old. His devoted mother raised him well and he graduated from Matamoras High School in 1950. Jack attended Marietta College for a year before enlisting in the US Air Force. He was stationed in England during the Korean War.
