Gertrude J. "Trudy" Blochowiak - June 01, 1926 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Gertrude J. “Trudy” Blochowiak passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at St. Mary’s Care Center with her loving daughter, Debbie at her side. She was born on June 1, 1926, in Turtle Lake, Wis., and left us at the age of 97. Trudy was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Ann (Ritschie) Peetz; husband, Joseph J. Blochowiak; beloved, daughter, Bonnie Lou; sister, Marie (Norman) Forness; brothers, Bernard (Marie) Peetz; half-brother, Charles Marske; niece, Betty Nelson; and very special sister-in-law and friend, Pat Blochowiak. She is survived by her loving daughter, Debbie (Fred) Loomis; loving nieces and nephews; and countless friends. She had special relationships with her godchildren, Jim Blochowiak (as well as his wife, Ping), and Lisa Short (deceased); nieces, Linda Mikolainis and Adele Roohana; and nephew, George (Lil) Roohana. If I forgot anyone, I apologize but you know who you are and how much you meant to her!
Trudy loved to laugh (often till she cried) and loved to spend time with her family and friends. Although she never had the opportunity to go to college, she "sure knew lots of stuff" as nephew, George, so aptly put it! She attended a one room schoolhouse (with her only other classmate being Rose Noonan) until high school in Gilman, Wis.
Although she loved growing up on the farm, brother, Bernard, teased her that he knew she was destined to be a "city girl" as she always wore her lipstick, "even when baling hay." She and Della took the bus to Milwaukee shortly after graduating from high school and worked at Allis Chalmers in the secretarial pool. Trudy often said these were some of the happiest and most fun days of her life. She met her husband, Joe, at a dance at the Eagles Club in Milwaukee and they married on Oct. 19, 1946. Whether she was coffee clutching with Sheila and Mary on Locust Street, bowling with Shirley, volunteering with Carol at St. Gregory the Great in the cafeteria, going for a movie with Pat, having lunch with the "support group" of Orlean, Clara, and Etta, line dancing (and just generally having fun) with special friend, Marlene, and the rest of the gang at Manor Park, or playing cards/scrabble/bingo with the Rosewood Villas bunch and later friends at Brookdale Middleton Stonefield (who made her final years full of love/laughter and good care), she sure knew how to have a good time!
The last three years of her life were made extra special due to the kind and loving caregivers and staff at St. Mary’s Care Center. You will always have a very special place in my heart. Also, a big thank you to the hospice staff who made her last days peaceful and meaningful.
My mom always said the thing she loved most was being a mom! She passed on so many wonderful things to me-my love of reading/music/dancing, learning new things, going out for lunch, chocolate, staying active, and most of all the importance of having some really great girlfriends (the "secret to a good marriage"). We sure will miss you and hope you are sharing a good laugh upstairs with those who left before you and that you've missed so much all these years!
At a later date, Trudy will be laid to rest next to her loving husband, Joseph, and beloved daughter, Bonnie, at The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery in Pulaski, Wis. There will be a celebration of close friends and family to follow.

Benjamin Richard Balgord - April 19, 1990 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Benjamin Richard Balgord, beloved father, husband, son, brother, and friend to all, passed unexpectedly at the age of 34.
Joyous from the beginning, Ben was born to Gary and Darlene Balgord in Madison, the community that would make and shape his life. As a child, Ben was always trying enthusiastically to keep up with his big sisters; ready to share in all of their misadventures. He was equally excited to go on a fishing trip with his dad or help his mom work in her classroom at Queen of Peace School. Ben was adored by everyone he met. He was fun, kind, loyal, and had boundless energy. You could always count on him to join any activity, any time. If you enjoyed something, Ben wanted to share in your merriment.
Ben graduated with Honors from Madison West High School in 2008. An exceptional soccer player, Ben competed for the Madison 56ers club team and was the leading scorer for the varsity team during his senior season. As an adult, he gave back to the program as a coach, one of countless examples of how Ben deliberately lived his values by strengthening his community.
A proud Badger, Ben earned an Engineering degree from UW-Madison in 2012. In addition to expanding his elite group of lifelong friends, Ben met his future wife Megan in the elevator of their apartment complex in the fall of their sophomore year. They lived only a few doors apart, and soon became inseparable.
Ben married Megan on June 14, 2014. They danced in their celebration with swagger and sweetness surrounded by hundreds of their closest family and friends, with none other than mascot Bucky Badger making a guest appearance at the reception. On July 5, 2018, Cora Lucille transformed Ben and Megan into parents, with Ben eagerly jumping into the role of father. They welcomed their second child, Beckett Guy, on June 25, 2020, completing their chaotic, curious, and always kind family. Ben shared his love of nature with his children. A devoted and doting father, you could often find Ben traveling with his family, exploring state and county parks, supporting the local library, and appreciating anything and everything in nature. His kids will remember him as silly, adventurous, and fun.
During the pandemic, Ben stepped away from an engineering career to focus on serving his community and spending more time with his young family. Ben volunteered all over town, particularly delighting in taking his children to nursing homes to build snowmen in front of residents’ windows. Most recently, Ben chose to follow the family tradition of teaching, joining his sister, mother, and grandmother in the field of education as a technical education and engineering teacher at Sennett Middle School.
Ben is survived by his wife, Megan; children, Cora and Beckett; parents, Gary and Darlene Balgord; sisters, Sarah Balgord (Matthew Stran) and Elizabeth Balgord (Cameron Colburn); and niece, Charlotte Stran; in addition to countless other family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, with a reception to follow.  A celebration of life will be held at the ALDO LEOPOLD NATURE CENTER 330 Femrite Drive, Monona, WI 53716, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024. All are welcome at both.
Ben was full of life. He was bursting with love, warmth, curiosity, empathy, and joy. To know Ben was to feel simultaneously at ease, entertained, and inspired. We were all lucky to have him in our lives and will miss him forever.

Guy M. Taylor - February 18, 1957 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: Verona - Attorney Guy M. Taylor is at rest after a long illness, and was surrounded in the hour of passing by his family, with anointing and wonderful prayers and chants from Father Christodoulos Margellos. He is survived by his wife Svetlana; sons, Alex and Chris; mother, Dorothy; brothers, Hugh and Dave (Sharon); niece, Antonia; and nephew, Donald; as well as many wonderful cousins. He was preceded in sleep by his father, Dr. Don Taylor; and his father-in-law, Dr. J. with whom he had a strong bond.
Guy was born in the Metairie section of the Big Easy in 1957 to Dr. Don and Dorothy Taylor. The family eventually moved to Madison where he was raised. A West High School alum, he earned his BA in theater arts from Beloit College in 1981. Following graduation Guy worked with the New American Theater in Rockford, IL for a year as actor and technician, followed by a year acting with The Kids Theater Touring Company out of Madison, Wisconsin. A free and joyful spirit, Guy biked his way through the British Isles busking; playing mandolin and singing, and then lived in Oakland, CA for a year bartending at Confucius Chinese Restaurant and living with close friends.
He attended law school at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and in his second year won first place for Outstanding Individual Oral Argument in the Regional Moot Court Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana, where his team also placed first. He earned his Juris Doctor in 1987 and was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar that same year. Guy spent 35 years defending indigent clients as a staff attorney at the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office for Green, Lafayette, and Rock Counties. He put his heart and soul into his work, as he did with everything else he touched.
Guy was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, where he was baptized, and he and Svetlana were married, where he served for many years with his sons, and also as legal counsel. He was a member of the Dodge Bros. Club, having purchased and restored an old family coupe, and toured the U.P. of Michigan in that car. He was a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, the Beloit Rifle Club, the Green County Rifle Club (where he served as corp. counsel for a time), and the Blackhawk Curling Club in Janesville, where he won a team trophy in that sport. An accomplished boat builder, Guy built a Northeaster Dory at the Chesapeake Light Craft workshop in Annapolis, MD.
Guy loved to travel with his family, visiting Asia, Polynesia, Indonesia, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, South America, and most of the states in the U.S.
His family was his pride and joy. Guy was a hands-on father who participated in Cub Scouts, school activities, and taught the kids marksmanship, hunting, cooking, canoeing, knot tying, puppy training, and what it means to be honorable, and a gentleman. For years he was manager of his sons’ Rush soccer team under Coach Alfred Wendell.
New Orleans left its mark on him and he delighted family and friends with expertly prepared Crawfish Etouffee, corn maque choux, gumbo, and of course hurricanes. Holidays began with Dixieland, homemade beignets, and chicory coffee. Guy loved music and had an encyclopedic knowledge of songs spanning many eras and genres. He regularly serenaded his wife with renditions of Norman Blake’s “Church Street Blues” and the Meters’ “They All Asked for You”. On his trips to Avarua he learned to play the ‘Ukarere like a pro.
Guy was a romantic, designing and building a Balinese pagoda for his wife and planting a night-garden for her. He enjoyed reading P.G. Wodehouse and Longfellow to her by candlelight; using his considerable acting skills to become the various characters he was reading about. He loved sitting by the fire in late summer and early autumn reciting Robert W. Service poems to the boys and encouraging them to make up funny or scary stories.
Guy had a wonderful and quirky sense of humor, a brilliant legal brain, a vocabulary very few could match, and enjoyed his time in court very much.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Kathleen Shannon for guiding us through this horrible illness with patience, compassion and an open mind, Dr. Shachar Peles for making Guy’s life so much easier and more pleasant this last year of his life, Dr. Andy Okas for his thoroughness and kindness, PA Anne Walsh, PA Angie Morgan, the incredible staff of Meriter ER, ICU, and hospital; to Cathy Metzler and Nichole Johnson for going way above and beyond. We wish to thank Kathy Pazak for keeping Guy talking, Sara B. for teaching Guy to swallow again (so he could enjoy a hundred celebrations since autumn 2023!), Pam Mueller for all her kindness and skill, Jerel, Rachel and Mary for making it possible for Guy to live at home and for all their help teaching his family to care for him. We wish to thank Dr. Christopher Lawrence, Dr. Fernando Vega, and Dr. Martina Koller, all of Seattle, who made the difficult and heart-wrenching diagnosis in a kind and considerate way.
Many thanks and so much gratefulness to our friends Rob and Sandi Robertson, Ann Dwyer and Lyle Burmeister, Darlene Gakovich, Dr. Ivan and Miki Knezevic, Stevan and Natalia Zakula, Lenny and Kathie Fafalios, Jim Beer, Loren Hadcock, our dear Karen Kuffer (who never forgot a holiday or birthday all these long years), Dr. Ford and Penny Ballantyne III, Phyllis Reed, Dale Gregory, Greg Dutch, Michael Moore, Don and Sheena Bliss, Lisa Wangsness, Dejan and Molly Nikolic, Zoran and Kendra Karaklajic, Jill Schermerhorn, Kent Lokken, Zo Popovic, Diana McNew, Teri Tobias from SPD for all her help, Sharon Stewart, Maria Molzay and Philoptochos, and always in our hearts and on our minds, Father Joseph and Presvytera Vicki Tzougros. Thank you dear friends for your many kindnesses during these difficult years.
The family wishes to extend very special thanks to brother/uncle/brother-in-law Hugh Taylor for the love and steadfast support he has shown all these years, and to Susan Hutton for her friendship, her many kindnesses, and endless Friday fish fry dinners which Guy and Svetlana enjoyed immensely in her illustrious and joyful company.

Robert Elmer Smith - January 21, 1935 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Robert E. “Bob” Smith, age 89, died on Thursday, April 11, 2024, in Madison. He was born on Jan. 21, 1935, in Freedom, Wis., the oldest of seven children born to Elmer and Dorothy (Van Hoof) Smith.
Bob attended St. Nicholas Grade School in Freedom, Wis., high school and junior college at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mount Calvary, Wis., followed by two years of college and four years of theology at the St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay in 1961 and served at Sacred Heart Parish in Appleton, Wis., for six years. In that time period he helped found an inter-faith clergy association. Bob transitioned to work in Chicago with the Federal Poverty Program, followed by a career in insurance with Aetna Life & Casualty in Appleton. He then received a master’s degree in clinical social work from UW-Madison and started 27 years as a therapist in private practice in Madison, working with his wife, Ingeborg Casey, Ph.D. They retired on Nov. 1, 2007.
In Appleton, Bob was proud of his involvement in a national program for public high school students from minority communities across the U.S., Appleton's A Better Chance Program (ABC of Appleton). Appleton's program was established in 1968 under the auspices of Lawrence University in which students attended public high schools in Appleton. Bob served on its board, including time as its president. The program continues to the present day.
Athletics and physical activities were always a large part of Bob's life. Aging directed his involvement from basketball, football, tennis, golf, skiing and racquetball to biking, hiking, dancing, working out at the Y and gardening. Travels in Europe and the U.S. often included hiking and biking. And these ventures also provided him with photo opportunities, so much so, that younger relatives referred to him as "Snapshot Bob." His slide shows were memorable. But he also digitized old photos of family events and shared them with family members.
Family gatherings and family history were very important for Bob. He provided a history of the Smith family for a book, “Town of Freedom, Outagmie County, Wisconsin: 1852-2002,” and a history on CDs of his mother's ancestors, the Van Hoofs. His hand drawn genealogical charts illustrated his Smith and Van Hoof heritage.
Bob's marriage to Ingeborg Casey provided Bob with an instant family. Her twin sons, Brian and Evan Casey, were age 7 when Bob became their step-father. Their spouses and children added many joys to Bob's life and these grandchildren became the focus of his attention throughout his life. Subsequent to Ingeborg's death in 2011, Bob also found loving support and companionship from his partner, Shirley Fagan.
Bob is survived by Brian and Shelly (Bunbury) Casey; Evan Casey; and five grandchildren, Quinn, Shea, Cade, Claire and Ethan Casey.
A memorial service will be held at HOLY WISDOM MONESTARY, 4200 County Road M, Middleton, at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, followed by a light luncheon at Holy Wisdom. Visitation will be at Holy Wisdom from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Bradley J. Sherman - May 22, 1943 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: A recording of Brad's memorial service is available until May 14th in the Special Events section at https://holywisdommonastery.org/monastery-without-walls/streaming/.
FITCHBURG - Bradley J. Sherman was born in Eau Claire, Wis., on May 22, 1943, to Betty and Jerry Sherman. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1961 and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1966, then moved to Wild Rose to teach history and coach at the high school there. The second day on the job, Brad went weak in the knees upon meeting the school’s art teacher, Jean Brownlow. He worked up the nerve to ask her out for a date, which she accepted. He and his date soon found out they were both born May 22, 1943; a sign, perhaps, that this was meant to be. On Aug. 19, 1967, at the Camp Lucerne chapel in Neshkoro, Jean became Brad’s life partner and best friend.
After teaching and coaching for five years, Brad was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1978, Brad decided he wanted to see athletic training services provided to high school athletes and returned to teaching and coaching, this time at Lakeland High School in Minocqua.
In 1981, an opportunity presented itself at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics to help develop a sports medicine program. Along with Dr. William Clancy, administrators Gordon Derzon and Gordon Ridley, and a dedicated staff of wonderful, passionate professionals, Brad and his colleagues transformed a fledging program of two orthopedists, a physical therapist, and an athletic trainer into one of the top sports medicine programs in the country. In 1995, the program moved into a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary facility that included sports medicine, spine, and family medicine clinics and cardiac rehabilitation, fitness, and aquatic centers.
Along with his career in sports medicine, Brad was active in the United Methodist Camping Ministry. He began as a summer counselor at Camp Lucerne in 1962 and over the next 50 years served in a variety of roles within the program, including serving as site director at Camp Lucerne from 2002-2004. Like his father, Brad was a grounded man who valued life’s simple gifts: a house wren nesting in his backyard pine, prairie wildflowers in bloom, floating on his back out beyond the raft at Stratton Lake. He treasured time spent with his faith community, his friends, and his family. Above all, he loved Jean deeply and was an exemplar of “to have and to hold, in sickness and in health.”
Brad is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Paul (Teresa Perez); daughter, Amy Kortbein (Thad); son, Eric (Melissa Rosenkranz); three grandchildren, Jonathan, Pearl and Indigo; sisters, Peggy Sherman and Jane (Dennis) Klapoetke; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, David and Mary Werth, Charles and Sherry Brownlow, and Debbie and Jim Brownlow. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Linda Sherman.
A celebration of life will be held at HOLY WISDOM MONASTERY, 4200 County Road M, Middleton, at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024.
Memorials may be made to the UW-Madison Athletic Training Program Scholarship Fund-112304368, Lake Lucerne Camp, or Agrace Hospice Care.

Rev. Renshin Barbara Verkuilen - March 07, 1945 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: LIVESTREAM SERVICE: Rev. Renshin Barbara Berkuilen's Livestream Service will begin at 1 p.m. CT on Friday, March 29, 2024. Scroll down to the Webcast section and click on "Watch Now."
A Zen Buddhist Memorial Service will take place at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave, Middleton, WI, on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 1 p.m. followed by visitation and refreshments.
Rev. Renshin Barbara Verkuilen was born in Chicago, IL to Max and Helen [Dresser] Jacob. She was husband of Taizen Dale, mother to John [Samantha Cripps], Peter [Monica Hanley], grandmother to Myasia Fajardo, and sister to Renee Kahn [Eliot Bolotin].
Renshin taught 2nd grade at Francis Parker School in Chicago for seven years before retraining as a psychotherapist, practicing for twenty years in various Wisconsin locations. She studied and practiced Zen Buddhism for fifty-five years under Rev. Soyu Matsuoka, Rev. Dainin Katagiri, and Rev. Shoken Winecoff, culminating in ordination as a Zen priest in 1997 and certification as a Zen teacher in 2013. She founded the Midwest Soto Zen Community in Madison in 2001, served at Ryumonji Zen Monastery, and at a number of Zen Centers in the Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin on a temporary basis.
Renshin authored three books [The Tale of Zen Master Bho Li, Dokusan with Dōgen: Timeless Lessons in Negotiating the Way, and Tending the Fire: An Introspective Guide to Zen Awakening] and The Process of Awakening, a comprehensive study of Zen practice, as well as a number of guidebooks on Zen subject materials.
Her association with the psychotherapist, David Grove, and his non-interpretative, supposition-free approach to accessing intuitive knowledge, produced two innovative adaptations - Metaphor Awareness and Enhanced Emergent Knowledge - both of which were integral to her counseling therapy and Zen practice.
Renshin’s kind, generous, and compassionate nature, combined with an unusual intuitive intelligence, had the faculty to communicate profound and complex ideas in a succinct manner. Those in relations with her were introduced into to a new and more vital way of being in the world merely by being close.
She will be greatly missed by her family members, many friends, and fellow Zen practitioners.

Gerald "Jerry" Miller - May 27, 1934 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: MADISON- His troubles are over. Jerry returned home on March 8, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born during the record-breaking heat wave in 1934 to Elsie G. (Farnsworth) and Herbert H. Miller of Middleton, Wis. Jerry graduated from Middleton High School, enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After that experience he told us to never volunteer for anything. Jerry was united in marriage to Patricia Harrington.  They had three children: Jennie, Linda and Jeff. He was employed as a sheet metal journeyman in residential construction, installing HVAC systems in many homes in the Madison area.
Jerry was an avid reader of obituaries. He would chuckle when he came across one saying the person was an avid hunter. In keeping with Jerry's wishes, we share the following:
Jerry never hunted or fished avids. Never even seen an avid.
He enjoyed being outdoors, reading, gardening and spending time at the farm. Running his dogs in field trials was his passion. His last hound, The Ace of Spades, won many trophies and was a rock star at the dog parks he visited.  Never was there a more spoiled hound. Jerry followed home talent baseball, the Badgers, Brewers, Bucks and the Green Bay Packers. Jerry is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Jennie; son, Jeff; and grandchildren, Eric (Becca) Slavens and Miranda Therrian and two great granddaughters, Alison and Alexis. He is further survived by his sisters, Elaine (Miller) Harrop and Joyce (Miller) Raisbeck; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda M. Miller-Slavens; his parents; and brother, Wayne Miller. A private service will be held. A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at a later date. Happy trails to you until we meet again. Gone but never forgotten. Love you forever. Donations to Agrace HospiceCare are suggested.

Jim loved following Badgers basketball and football and was a huge Packers fan. He also looked forward to shopping at Menards and Costco on a scooter and “going out on the town.”
Although Jim struggled to breathe for over 27 years, he rarely complained, and he continued to plan for his future. He was preparing another road trip to Sedona this Spring, and he already had his fishing trips booked for Fall of 2024. Now, Jim can peacefully swim like the loons and fly like the eagles, over Bone Lake in Luck, WI, watching for the 50” Muskie. (1961) in Wood Science and Technology. He was proud to be the first in his family to graduate from both high school and college.

Lee met his future wife, Lyleth “Stevie” (Stevenson) Gjovik, on a blind date. After winning the hearts of her family by helping on their farm, they married on Aug. 27, 1955, and became a strong team.
Later that year, they moved to St. Paul where Lee entered college at the University of Minnesota with the support of his wife. Lyleth worked as a bookkeeper while he worked the summers as a dynamiter for road construction.

He was president of the American Wood Protection Association and chairman of the government team that authored the Wood Preservation and Pesticides Handbook. Bonita Rae "Bonnie" Bruce - August 06, 1942 - February 28, 2024

Departed: 02/28/2024 (Middleton)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Bonnie Rae (Lerum) Bruce passed away on Feb. 28, 2024, and joins her mother in heaven. Bonnie was born on Aug. 6, 1942, to Wanda (Hamre) Lerum and Edwin Lerum. She primarily grew up in Madison, living on Division Street and attending Madison public schools through Madison East High School, graduating in 1960.
Bonnie enjoyed family and friends and work. Her primary work was 28 years with the University of Wisconsin Foundation as a planned giving development officer, which allowed her to travel around the U.S. and meet UW alumni, many of whom remained friends after her retirement.
As a Norwegian-American from both sides, Bonnie enjoyed krumkake, lefse, lutefisk, being a member of Sons of Norway Idun Lodge, and participating in Syttende Mai celebrations, particularly rosemaling exhibits and the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers. Each Christmas she would bake multiple types of cookies, most with a Norwegian bent; many of those years she was assisted by daughters of friends, one of whom decided to count the cookies and registered over a thousand several years.
Downhill skiing was a part of Bonnie's life, and even before marrying Paul Aspinwall in 1999, she took him to ski school and multiple trips to the Rocky Mountains each year ensued, including Copper Mountain, Keystone, Vail, Steamboat Springs, and Snowmass in Colorado, Jackson Hole in Wyoming, and Deer Valley and Park City in Utah; even a trip to Whitefish in Montana. She also took Paul to dancing lessons, and then 20 years with the Night Owls Dance Club.
Bonnie was an early woman joiner of Kiwanis Madison West, in 1992, and served on its Foundation board. Friday lunches with several of the members were filled with wit (and witless) camaraderie, and the November pancake breakfast was sure to be on her "work" calendar, as well as volunteering at Midvale School.
Bonnie enjoyed her extended family on both the Hamre and Lerum sides, and she took to being a "mother" to a Swedish exchange student, Fredrik Rosman, while in Lake Geneva, and then attending his wedding to Malena in Sweden. She also liked being a "grandmother” to their daughters, Josefin and Emma. Multiple visits to Sweden and Norway before and then with Paul meant staying with family - Fredrik in Sweden, and her cousins in Bergen, Norway, and on the family farm in Leikanger, Norway. She also "adopted" Paul's children and grandchildren.
Supporting Packers and Badgers always made the calendar. Special trips were to Italy in 2006 with the Badgers men's basketball team, and to Hawaii in 2016, and several Rose Bowls. She was pleased with birthday celebration weeks to Bayfield and Door County, and a special one sailing in Green Bay for ten days in 2000. Bonnie is survived by her husband, Paul Aspinwall; her brother, John; and many cousins. She was predeceased by her parents. She appreciated the help from UW Health, Oakwood West Hebron, Senior
Helpers, and Ingleside Manor in Mount Horeb. Bonnie, and Paul, particularly thank the staff at Brookdale Middleton Stonefield and Agrace Hospice for helping her make the most of the last three years.
A celebration of life will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, with a luncheon to follow. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. There will also be a Bonnie Bruce party at Blackhawk Country Club in the spring. Interment at Spring Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery in Keyeser will take place on Aug. 6, 2024.

Obituary Preview: CROSS PLAINS / SPRINGFIELD CORNERS - Darrell Kenton Grosse, age 61, passed away on Tuesday, Feb 27, 2024, after a courageous battle with aggressive cancer. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Darrell never missed a day of work but in his free time you could find him in his shop woodworking. He enjoyed playing cards and dice, splitting wood, fishing and never missed a Packers Game. He liked grilling, gardening, filling his bird feeders and cruising around on his golf cart. Come summertime he spent countless hours on his lawnmower. He took pride in having the best-looking lawn in Springfield.
But most of all, he loved his kids and grandkids: Ana (Eric) Whitworth and their sons, Levi and Colt; Eli Grosse and his daughter, Natalia; and Jossi (Mike Miller) Grosse and their son, Oden; and always by his side, his companion pup, Scout. He will be dearly missed by all.
Darrell is survived by his brother, Mark (Mary) Grosse; sisters, Judy (Steve) Reinke and Debbie (Jim) Meier; brother-in-law, Gary Hanson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Angie Grosse; and his sister, Karen Hanson. Special thanks to Darrell’s UW Carbone Cancer doctors, Agrace HospiceCare staff and all the family and friends that helped him especially; Mona Statz-Grosse, Marilyn Passini, Debbie Meier, RJ Statz and Carly Statz. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
In keeping with Darrell’s wishes, no services will be held. If you feel led to help his children with memorial expenses, visit: https://everloved.com/life-of/darrell-grosse/donate/

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community. They provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased. Obituaries also help to preserve the person's legacy and memory.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may have online forms or email addresses for submissions, while others may require phone calls or in-person visits.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or online links. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides more insight into the person's life.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to add humorous stories or personal touches that capture their personality.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

How do I ensure that my loved one's obituary is accessible to all who knew them?

Consider publishing the obituary in multiple locations, such as local newspapers, online platforms, and social media groups. You can also share it with friends, family, and colleagues via email or messaging apps.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family members, or professional writers for assistance. You can also take your time and work on it in stages as you're able.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary.

How do I handle conflicting opinions or disagreements among family members when writing an obituary?

Talk openly with family members about their concerns and try to find common ground. If necessary, consider seeking guidance from a neutral third party such as a funeral director or counselor.

What if I'm unsure about certain details or facts about the person's life?

If you're unsure about specific details, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit them rather than risk including inaccurate information. You can also consult with other family members or friends who may have more knowledge.

Can I create a video obituary or slideshow instead of a written one?

Yes, some funeral homes and online platforms offer options for creating video tributes or slideshows that combine music, images, and text to celebrate the person's life.

How do I preserve my loved one's legacy beyond the initial publication of the obituary?

Consider creating a memory book, scrapbook, or digital archive where you can collect stories, photos, and mementos celebrating their life. You can also establish a scholarship fund or charity in their name.
