Suzanne "Suzy" Smith - March 17, 1948 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Suzanne “Suzy” Smith of Madison, died on April 23, 2024, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg after a face-off with cancer - both parties lost. Born in Madison on March 17, 1948, she never missed a chance to double dip with a St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl on her birthday enforcing her motto of “March the 17th and sleep the 18th”!
After graduating from Normandy High School in St. Louis, Mo., in 1966, Suzy began her career and spent several decades working as a Graphic Artist for the UW-Madison Food Science department until retirement in 2003. During that time she studied art and graphic design at MATC (Madison College) earning an Associate Degree.  Failing at retirement, she took a part-time job at the Madison Senior Center, quickly becoming a beloved member of that community.
Suzy spent most of her life in Madison, though early on she frequently escaped. She first toured London and Paris and then in 1977 she took a short break from her career, going on a year-long camping trip around the US with a friend and was later joined by her brother, Mike. This opened new horizons, exploring national parks, taking short-term jobs and sleeping under tarped picnic tables when money was tight. She popularized the term “mule rescue” for all her family and friends to be used in those times when walking or driving yourself seemed like a really bad idea. She enjoyed her trips to Elko and Wendover, Nev., to see brother, Bill, which often involved impromptu night-long runs at the slot machines punctuated by much giggling. Despite her relentless optimism, she was an active member of the Old Bastards Club in Oxford.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, Delores and George Smith; and her brothers, Terry and Bill. Suzanne is survived by her sister, Cathy (Dave) Potter of Madison; brother, Michael (Bev) Smith of Mauston; sister-in-law, Barbara Smith of Sun Prairie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, honorary family members and friends. Everyone that met Suzy was considered a friend.
Aunt Suzy played an active role in her family’s lives, especially all of her nieces and nephews. She assisted with childcare, pick-ups and rides to school and work, fostering artistic abilities both real and imaginary, and often competing with the kids to see who was first to get a parent’s disapproving glance. She was always the one to be there when help was needed.
Suzy spent over 30 years house-sitting, cat-sitting, dog-sitting or just sitting for anyone who asked. She loved playing cards and games and especially holiday parties. Other than St. Patrick’s Day, celebrating Kentucky Derby Day and Halloween were days she looked forward to the most. She would dress up for the occasion in her favorite floppy hat for the derby or her infamous “old lady” get-up for Halloween. She was a natural at having fun and joking around. Even in her last couple weeks of life, she was able to bring smiles to nurses and everyone that came to visit her with the wit and humor that only Suzy could deliver.
A gathering of friends and family for a celebration of life will be held VFW POST NO. 7591, 301 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024. Since the Kentucky Derby will be held the day before the celebration of her life, it is encouraged to wear appropriate derby attire to this event.

Dorothy Haines - January 03, 1922 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: MADISON - Dorothy Haines (nee Dorothy Lou Browne) passed peacefully on Earth Day, April 22, 2024, in Madison, Wis. She was born on Jan. 3, 1922, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Marshall F. and Vera Browne, long-time Wisconsin natives who shortly thereafter returned to Madison.
Dorothy attributes her life-long love of birds, wildlife and canoeing to her parents’ purchase of an undeveloped, tree covered lot for a cabin and boathouse in what later became Monona in about 1938, after which she saved her baby-sitting money to buy her first canoe.
Dorothy graduated from Madison East High School in 1939 and then attended the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism, becoming the first woman editor of the University newspaper, "The Daily Cardinal," and graduated in 1943. She married Leonard Haines that same year after he obtained his law degree from the UW Law School and they moved to Whitewater, Wis.  They had two sons, Jeffrey (1945) and Randy (1948), before Leonard passed in 1953. Dorothy and her sons returned to Madison where she went to work for her father’s East Side Print Shop (later Impressions, Inc.) which also published the "East Side News," of which Dorothy was the editor. Ultimately Dorothy’s brother, Marshall “Bud” Browne Jr., ran the family business with Dorothy as Vice President.
Dorothy was always an avid canoer and enjoyed hiking and camping with her boys. Their first big car camping trip was to the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone when the boys were only 10 and 13. They spent each night camping in her parents’ old canvas wall tent that required three people to raise and stake out.
She was active in the East Side Women’s Club and was named their Woman of the Year in 1964.   She moved to Monona in 1969 and became active in its Landmarks Commission, the Monona Heritage Foundation, and the Historic Blooming Grove Historical Society. Her love of history and journalism combined in several years’ research and writing of the book “Monona in the Making,” published in 1999, for which she was awarded the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Local History Award of Merit. She became active with the International Crane Foundation and the Madison Audubon Society.  When Mud Lake’s bird and waterfowl habitat was threatened by the construction of the Beltline Highway, she became one of the founders of what became the Wisconsin Wetlands Association and published their newsletter on her basement mimeograph machine.
Dorothy spent many days volunteering at the Madison Audubon Society’s Goose Pond Sanctuary, especially in setting up spotting scopes for visitors and in editing its newsletter, for which she was awarded the Audubon Society’s James Zimmerman Award of Excellence in Environmental Education and Communication in 2008. Her love of birds, wildlife and camping adventures expanded far beyond Wisconsin in trips to Africa, China, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, and a 10-day raft trip on the Colorado River with her son, Randy, and his wife, Kathy.
Although she loved nature, education and travel her heart always belonged to Wisconsin and her Browne family, including both its ancestors dating back to the 1500s and its extensive current and future progeny.  In her family life Dorothy was an important hostess, mentor, advisor and family historian.  She hosted delicious extended family dinners, often based on her mother’s recipes, taught everyone how to make home-made ice cream from a 19th century family recipe, and contributed support to the secondary education of a number of nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Randy (Kathy) Haines of Arizona; and nieces and nephews, Ken (Roberta) Smith of Monona, Wis., Mark F. Browne of Cheyenne, Wy., Brad (Cindy) Browne of Allen, Texas, Ned Smith of Tustin, Calif., Sally (Steve) Hodge of DeForest, Wis., and Clarke Smith of Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Haines; and niece, Polly Browne of Mankato, Minn.
A celebration of life will be held at the NATHANIEL AND HARRIETT DEAN HOUSE, 4718 Monona Drive, Madison, from 11 a. m. until 1 p.m., with a time of sharing at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Michael Paul Palovcsik, II - April 24, 1977 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: MONONA - Michael Paul Palovcsik II, age 46, of Monona, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024. He was born on April 24, 1977, in Brookfield, Wis., the beloved son of Michael and Barbara (Beidelstein) Palovcsik.
Graduating from Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wis., he pursued his passion for learning, earning both a bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA from UW-Whitewater. Throughout his professional career, Mike's talents as a project manager and commitment to excellence left an indelible mark on companies like Epic, Vonlay, Huron Consulting, CUNA Mutual Group, and most recently Evergreen Consulting.
Mike had a profound dedication to his family, work, and community. Family was the cornerstone of his life, and his children, Clare and Christian, meant everything to him. He reveled in every moment spent with them, from cheering them on at hockey games and dance recitals, timing for swim meets, sitting with them in church, and just enjoying everyday activities like the Farmer’s Market, the terrace, and Concerts on the Square. He was a dedicated father, nurturing their passions and dreams with unwavering support. They enjoyed family game nights and movie nights, laughing together, challenging each other, and creating precious memories. He also had a strong bond with his sister, Amanda, and they enjoyed many activities together throughout their lives. They made it a point to continue traditions important to them, including Crazylegs, Great Taste, Art Fair, Beer/Cheese, and Christmas movie night - to keep Christmas in their hearts all year long.
Mike was looking forward to his upcoming wedding celebration to his fiancée, Kim Wilson, on Nov. 2, 2024.  Mike and Kim met several years ago, bonding instantly over a shared love of Disney, travel, and challenging each other in support of their goals. Mike loved their ability to find the joy in the simple moments made special by being together - they had committed to spending the rest of their lives together, and in pursuit of this they purchased a house and turned it into a home for them, Clare and Christian. Mike and Kim enjoyed taking trips together and with the kids, discovering fun spots to visit around Madison, spending time with friends, and finding roads less traveled together and making it an adventure.
Music was a consistent source of joy and inspiration in Mike’s life, from his early days in show choir, to playing the drums and piano, to running a DJ business in his late teens and early 20s. His eclectic taste in classic rock, paired with an extensive vinyl collection (of which he was very proud), reflected his lively energy and personality - he could find the perfect song lyric to match any occasion, and was always the go-to person who put together the playlist for an event. He would often say he could name a song in two notes and was usually correct (though he would say always).
Mike's generosity, humor, and genuine compassion touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His infectious laughter could light up the room, and he had an ability to create a connection with everyone he met. Mike’s friends were family to him, and he enriched their lives with his warmth, humor, loud voice, and unwavering loyalty.
Mike had many passions and hobbies - he was always training for the next race, enjoying a round of golf, planning his next Disney vacation, exploring Madison and new cities, or counting down the days until he could start celebrating Christmas.
Mike will be deeply missed by his fiancée, Kim; his beloved children, Clare and Christian; his parents Michael and Barbara; his sister, Amanda and her partner, Greg; and many cherished relatives and friends who were blessed to share in his extraordinary life. Though sadness may weigh heavy on our hearts, may we find comfort in the knowledge that Mike's spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will endure for generations to come.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, with Pastor Jeff Vanden Huevel presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
