James Robert Woelfel - April 02, 1961 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Elk Grove Village)
Obituary Preview: James Robert Woelfel didn’t really like the name James, so he went by Jim.
He grew up in Elk Grove Village with his three older siblings, Cynthia, Joseph and John. He loved his parents – the late Joseph Woelfel, Juana Ann Woelfel (Grandma Kitty), and later, Marcia Rittenhouse, who became Joseph’s life partner after Juana Ann’s death when Jim was 12.
Jim loved his mom and, when he was able, would visit her grave often. He spent many nights, even in his last years of life, praying and speaking to her. He prayed and spoke to his dad, too, upon his death in 2020.
At age 23, Jim met his future wife, Anila Dean, who lived down the street from him. The two were married for 12 years, and had three children, Zachary, Joshua and Mariah. Throughout their lives, Jim’s children have felt the deep love he had for them. He filled their early childhood years with memories and values they will carry with them forever. Jim would take them on fishing and camping trips, long walks in the forest preserve and shared his love of billiards with them. He taught them the phrase “Woelfels wobble but they don’t fall down,” and that they can do anything they set their minds to. He took pride in letting Mariah join in on anything her older brothers did.
Jim had a zest for life that at times created significant challenges for him. But during his high school years, Jim joined his peers in dance performance as a way to channel his boundless energy. He will be remembered for his intense love of nature and animals. He was an avid dog lover and had an innate ability to train even the laziest or unruliest hound. He loved motorcycles, Harley Davidsons, and was a member of the Chicago Windy City Riders in the mid-to-late 90s. He found his niche in construction, where his creativity made him a talented general contractor and painter for many years. He liked giving back and was deeply proud of a nonprofit he started called “Kids Cartoon Rooms” that aimed to hire neurodiverse kids and young adults to paint cartoons on walls in spaces for children. Jim also had a major sweet tooth, and taught his kids a life secret: that carrot cake is okay to eat for breakfast because it’s made with vegetables. He had a great sense of humor that he loved to share with strangers and friends alike, and he cracked jokes to the very end of his life.
Jim’s three children and ex-wife were at his bedside in his final days and they will miss him deeply. Jim’s sister, Cynthia, and brother-in-law, Bruce Haas, were also key pillars of his support system in his final years, as he battled end stage renal disease that prevented him from living life to the fullest in the way he wanted. Jim was 63 years old. “A service for Jim’s close friends and family will be held on Sunday, from 12-2 pm at Grove Memorial Chapel with a lunch to follow from 2-5 pm at Busse Woods. Dress in an outfit you love. Business casual, casual, and bright colors are welcome.”

Cindy was known for her infectious laugh, caring heart, and love for her family. She embodied the best of qualities: compassion for others, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity to many charities throughout her life. She will be remembered for her willingness to help family and friends, making those laugh with her silliness and commitment to a bit, and her exemplary care packages and Easter baskets.

Cindy also enjoyed listening to and attending Dave Matthews Band concerts with friends. Cindy was also known to be very content sitting on her couch, watching golf on a Sunday afternoon. Recently retired, she was looking forward to traveling.
Cindy was a private and stoic person. She was strong-willed and fearless. These traits forged who she was. Being strong-willed, Cindy never missed a day of work. Obituary Preview: Stanislawa Filipek, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death. She was a beloved mother of 4, George (Miriam), Ted, Andy, and Joanna (Alex). She was a grandmother of 7. She is also survived by her older sister Zosia and many nieces and nephews. She was born and raised in Poland and came to the United States at the age of 28. She was married in November of 1964 and began to raise her family soon after. In July of 2002, her world was turned upside down when she had a massive stroke. If that wasn’t enough for a person to overcome, years later she was also diagnosed with dementia. Even though her world changed drastically, her loving character stayed the same.
Stanislawa, Stella, Stasia, Danuta, Danusia, Danka, and even Stan. It didn’t matter what name you called her, she would give you the biggest, most loving and warm smile. Everyone who knew her, loved her and felt loved by her.
Goodbyes are never easy to say, even when you know the person leaving is in a better place. So let’s not say good bye. Let this be a see you later, for we will meet again when we get called home. Do Not Ask Me to Remember Do not ask me to remember, Don’t try to make me understand,
Let me rest and know you’re with me.
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
I’m confused beyond your concept.
I am sad and sick and lost. All I know is that I need you
To be with me at all cost. Do not lose your patience with me,
Do not scold or curse or cry. I can’t help the way I’m acting,
Can’t be different though I try. Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone. Please don’t fail to stand beside me,
Love me ‘til my life is done. -Owen Darnell

This vibrant Centenarian unexpectedly and suddenly changed our lives forever leaving behind his 4 children-Pam Scully, Bill (Patricia) Mampre, Scott Mampre, and Janet (Scott) Anderson; his 10 grandchildren Alissa, Anthony (Rita), Amber, Aaron, Christopher (Dani), Bethany (Joe), Michelle, David (Daniella), Kelly, Kristen (Cameron); his 5 great grandchildren, Amber, Jacob, Alex, Zach, and Asher as well as a lifetime of extended family and friends.
Big Ed was far from an introvert, he knew everyone and was affectionately called "The Mayor of South Oak Park" where he lived for all but the last 6 years of his life. These past years, Ed lived with his oldest daughter Pam and her family delighting them with his humor, stories, great health, patience, and recently his singing talents. Ed loved being active and in the middle of all the household chaos. He was involved in youth sports, his church, PTA and Scouting. Through his life, Ed traveled the country as a salesman he was a bellboy, a taxi driver, he worked for the government after the war, and sold high end men’s clothing. He had some of his most fun playing the Mall Santa and the Ester Bunny. One of Ed’s favorite pastimes was shopping! Ed was a proud WWII Army Aviation trained pilot who served on B-24 Bombers based in England and served for a time under actor Jimmy Stewert.
Besides his children, his wife Joyce was the light of his life. They were married for 50 years and he has missed her dearly since her passing in 2002. Ed and Joyce did everything together, loved to dance, travel, visit our Wisconsin family, visiting grandchildren scattered about, and even grocery shopped together weekly. How the world has changed during his century of life, and now our own world will be forever different.

Kenneth John McLaren - May 05, 1955 - March 11, 2024

Departed: 03/11/2024 (Elk Grove Village)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that the family of Kenny McLaren announce his sudden passing on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the age of 68.
He will be forever remembered by his wife of 37 years and best friend, Fiona; children: Bonny (André), Kenny Jr., Alexandra (David), and Conrad; grandchildren: Jackson and Jude; cats: Katniss and Brutus; as well as numerous friends and colleagues.
Kenny was born in Toronto. He was adopted by Ken and Jean McLaren. He was raised in the West end of Toronto, Canada, where he grew up as a self-described “serious child”; loving Boy Scouts, his friends, and regularly challenging authoritarian figures and societal norms for their lack of foundation in logic. This led him to a life of exploration, risk taking, and adrenaline chasing. Kenny’s insatiable drive for a life well-lived led him to adventures such as driving a taxi cab in Toronto, hitchhiking across Canada, a decade long commitment to the Canadian Ski Patrol at Georgian Peaks Ski Club, outdoor rock climbing, experiencing live, and loud, rock concerts, obtaining his pilot's license, and driving a Formula 1 car. Kenny’s spirit of curiosity allowed him to see the beauty in nature, science, language, ancient history, music that spanned many genres, and literature. This manifested in his love of camping, extensive global travel, and later in life the simple pleasures of his backyard garden, his wood craftsmanship, and his desire to share these passions with his children and grandchildren. Over the course of Kenny’s life, he mastered a foundation of skills in manufacturing as he grew from an apprentice tool and die maker, to ultimately becoming the Vice President of Operations at Perfection Spring and Stamping - a career that spanned 3 countries and 5 decades. Kenny’s most important role was always to be the best, most loving husband to Fiona, father to his 4 kids, and Grandad to his 2 grandsons. He revered this role as a sacred vocation, second to nothing, always determined to give his family the rich, loving and fulfilling life he felt that they deserved. Kenny had a love of fine food, whiskey, refining his specialized woodworking techniques, cooking for his family, aircraft, Formula 1 racing, Russian literature, traveling, movies, Xbox gaming, progressive rock music, volunteering and participating in the Itasca Lions Club, and making Christmas magical and truly special for everyone. Kenny’s gregarious, charismatic, and respectful nature made him someone that could, and would, connect with everyone he came across, from his work colleagues to the barista at Starbucks.

Judith Marie Gagliardi - September 24, 1935 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Elk Grove Village)
Obituary Preview: Judith Marie Gagliardi, 88, of Elk Grove Village, formerly of Arlington Heights, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024.
Beloved wife of Julius C. Gagliardi for 68 years; loving mother of Kathleen (Mark) Magnusson, Mark (Joanne) Gagliardi, Deborah (Roberto) Girardi, Dianne (Philip) La Mantia, Carla (Paul) Huerta, and Anthony (Bonnie) Gagliardi; loving grandmother of Gianna, Elise, Alexandria, Samier, Alexis, Francesco, Stefania, Giuliana, Anthony, Stephanie, Anthony, Emma, Ashley, Natalie, Isabelle, and great grandmother of Carter, Rudy, and Tyler. Preceded in death by sister Anna (Anthony) Burdi.
Judith Marie Caringella was married to Julius Cesare Gagliardi on October 15, 1955. They built a beautiful life filled with love and joy and weathered hardships and heartaches together. There are so many words to describe our mother that one doesn’t know where to begin. How she ever put up with the commotion while raising six kids is a mystery. Actually, it’s not because our wonderful mother always loved to be right in the middle of everything. Throughout our childhoods, she sang and danced to her favorite songs from the 50s and played countless albums and 45s on the old console stereo in the living room. Somehow, she found the time to ride bikes and play games with us. She made each one of us feel special. And she did the same for our children. She was forever cooking and cleaning and seemed to have a dishtowel attached to her at all times as she sang her favorite tunes. This is how we will always remember our little Mamma – full of life!

Melanie Milz Hauth - May 23, 1926 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Elk Grove Village)
Obituary Preview: Melanie Milz Hauth, 97, former resident of Glenview, Evanston and most recently Bensenville, peacefully passed away on February 18, 2024.
Melanie was the beloved wife of the late Ralph Hauth (2005); loving mother of Deborah Gruszka and Karen (Bob) Stevens; cherished grandmother of Jason (Carrie) Stevens, Christopher (Sarah) Stevens, Rachel (Todd) Murphy, and Danielle (Ed) Hong; dear great grandmother of Aloise Stevens, Owen Hong, Lucy Murphy, Hannah Hong, Lilly Murphy, Max Murphy, Emma Stevens, and Caden Stevens. Melanie is preceded in death by her sister Lois Milz, brother Norbert Milz, and her parents Ethel and Herman Milz.
Melanie was born in Evanston in 1926, the first child for Herman and Ethel Mitz. Herman and Ethel had three children Melanie, Lois, and Norbert. Lois passed away when she was only six months old from complications of whooping cough. Melanie always carried a degree of guilt with her because she had whooping cough first and assumed that her sister caught it from her. Herman was a mailman in Evanston and Ethel was a homemaker who also did catering for people in the neighborhood. The family attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Evanston and Melanie also went to school there. In fact, that is where she met her future husband, Ralph Hauth. He was a grade ahead of her and she knew him as the boy who always had a couple of pennies for candy. Melanie graduated from Evanston High School in 1944. Her high schooling included classes in typing, shorthand and taking dictation. She excelled in these courses which helped her land a job at Washington National Insurance after graduation. Melanie also had a few part time jobs while in high school one of which was working at Chandler’s Shoe store. Her love of shoes never diminished as we found out when we helped her downsize her house a few years ago. Melanie wrote letters to two servicemen overseas during WW2. The servicemen’s names and addresses were provided by the church and one of the men she wrote to was Ralph. After Ralph returned from the Pacific as a decorated marine, he stopped by to see the girl that had been writing to him. They were married in 1946. (The other serviceman also stopped by and wanted to date Melanie, but she was already smitten with Ralph). Melanie had her first daughter, Deborah, in 1951. But Ralph wasn’t there. He had been drafted into the Army for the Koren War. He was stationed in California as an MP and it was awhile before he could get home and meet her. Melanie had her second daughter Karen in 1954. Melanie stopped working when her mother had a stroke and needed help at home. Ralph and Melanie had built a house in Evanston not far from her parents. She would cook dinner for them every day and Ralph would take it over in a silver pan every night after the family dinner. In 1964 Ralph and Melanie bought a larger house in Glenview so her parents could live with them. They had only been in the house a short time before Herman passed away. Ethel was there several more years before she also passed away in 1969. When Melanie moved to Glenview they transferred their church membership to Immanual Lutheran Church. She was very active there in several women’s groups with the quilting club being the longest lasting. She loved crafts, sewing and baking. She also had a love of flowers. On the many summer vacations she took over the years she would gravitate to places with fields of flowers or gardens. Ralph and Melanie managed to visit 49 states on the vacations they took. Melanie made it 50 states by visiting Alaska with her brother and his wife after Ralph had passed away. Melanie was a fashionista. Everything was coordinated so she looked her best regardless of where she was going. Did I mention the shoes?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details that you're unsure about including in the obituary, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them. Remember that the goal of an obituary is to honor and celebrate the person's life, not to air dirty laundry or reveal secrets.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to continue the person's legacy and support a cause they cared about.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published, contact the newspaper or online platform directly to see what options are available.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituaries are archived permanently and can be accessed years later. However, it's always a good idea to save a copy of the obituary for your own records.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes! Sharing an obituary on social media can help spread the word quickly and reach a wider audience. Many online obituary platforms provide sharing tools or links to make it easy to share on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.

What if I want to write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be personal tributes from those who knew and loved the deceased. If you're concerned about privacy or safety issues, consider speaking with a funeral home or counselor for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complicated family relationships in an obituary?

This can be a delicate situation. When dealing with multiple marriages or complicated family relationships, focus on accuracy and sensitivity. Consider consulting with other family members or a funeral home for guidance.

Can I include information about pets in an obituary?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Including information about beloved pets can add warmth and personality to the obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or counselor who can provide guidance and resources.

Can I use humor or irony in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and irony can be effective ways to celebrate a person's life and personality. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I ensure that an online obituary is accurate and up-to-date?

Maintain open communication with the online platform or funeral home managing the obituary. If you notice any errors or inaccuracies, report them promptly so they can be corrected.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life story?

Yes! There are many digital platforms and tools available that allow you to create a comprehensive archive of your loved one's life story, including photos, videos, stories, and more.

What if I want to write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

This is not uncommon! You may want to write one version for close friends and family, another for coworkers or acquaintances. Just be sure to tailor each version appropriately for its intended audience.
