Terry served with the 9th Division of the U.S. army from 1966-1969 in Germany and during Tet Offensive in Vietnam. He was a sergeant, a squad leader, and received numerous medals including the purple heart. Terry was severely wounded in Vietnam resulting in a year’s stay in different army hospitals. Once discharged from the hospital, it was a couple of years before he was able to walk unaided by leg braces and a cane. Terry’s focus was never on his own sacrifice, but always on those with whom he served.
Terry met his wife, Patty Moon, at Thanksgiving dinner at her house when they were 16 and 17 years old. He had come with her cousin, Conrad Lee. Terry and Patty married on December 29, 1972 and began raising their family.
Over the years, Terry earned a BS, MBA, and a Doctoral degree in Theology. Terry loved to study the Bible. To better understand the Bible, he taught himself Greek. He would spend countless hours studying in preparation to teach Sunday School. He especially enjoyed the years he taught Sunday School at New Hope Baptist and First Baptist in Hobbs.

Some of his favorite companies were Star Tool, Weatherford, JSI, and D & L Meters.
Terry worked hard and took pleasure in providing for his family. He counted it a privilege to help raise three grandchildren in his home. Despite his health issues, he worked long, hard hours without complaint. He was a man of integrity, hard work, honesty, dedication, sacrifice, and generosity. Richard Bender - June 11, 1932 - February 28, 2022

Departed: 02/28/2022 (Hobbs)
Obituary Preview: The angels carried our beloved husband, dad, granddad and Papa, Richard “Dick” Bender, into his heavenly home on February 28th, 2022, at the age of 89.
Even though failing health took him away from this world, his battles with many health issues over recent years showed his strong courage, faith, and deep love for family.  He faced every challenge with a smile and went through years of grueling dialysis treatments to remain with his wife and family for as long as God allowed him to.
Dick is preceded in death by his first wife of forty-seven years, Rena Blankenship Bender; his parents, Phil and Bonnie Troxell Bender; siblings Aleta Hanville, Irma Lee Caldwell, Murlin and Mark Bender; stepchildren Richard Scott and Cyndy Crawford; two nephews, one grandniece and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice “Jan” Mason Scott Bender, a former high school girlfriend in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with whom he reconnected with and married in 2010.  The children will always be grateful for the love, care and devotion Jan held for their father.  She was an amazing wife, companion, and caregiver to him.
Dick is also survived by five children:  Gary (Sheila) Bender of Montgomery, Texas; Rick (Janet) Bender of Midland, Texas; Tracy (Sandra) Bender of San Antonio, Texas; Kelly (Linda) Bender of Fairfax, Virginia; and Vicky (Jay) Miller of Lake Dallas, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; and several sisters and brothers-in-law. He was born in Hominy, Oklahoma, on June 11th, 1932 and grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  It is a family joke that he spent more time skipping than attending school during his childhood.  He even skipped his very first day of first grade!
Dick was a proud Korean war veteran, serving in the 45th Infantry of the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, having received several accommodations and medals including the UN Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and Bronze Service Star.  He first tried to enlist in the Army at the age of thirteen, but his parents managed to hold him off until he reached the age of seventeen!  He loved his country.
Dick’s Christian faith and church was an essential part of his life.  He was a long-time church deacon at First Baptist Church of Hobbs, New Mexico.  In earlier years, he and his wife, Rena, participated in the children’s bus ministry there and served on several of the church’s committees, including their favorite, the Glorieta Cabin Committee.  He was a strong prayer warrior and soul winner.  He wept openly for those in his circle of life who did not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
After he married Jan in 2010, they enjoyed singing in the Jubilee choir together for as long as he was able.  He had a lovely tenor voice.  They enjoyed having breakfast with friends at McDonald’s, their Car Club, Sunday School class and playing board games with family and friends.
Dick worked in various power producing plants as a shift manager during most of his adult life until he retired from Southwest Public Service in Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1995.  He and Rena spent most of their forty-seven years together living in Lovington and Hobbs.
He loved traveling and took his young family on vacations all over the United States in a station wagon pulling his homemade camper-trailer behind.  He had also traveled to Europe, China, and Alaska with Rena after he retired.  He also loved family reunions, his 45th Infantry reunions, taking pictures and shooting videos, hunting trips with his sons, gospel music, church, card and board games, classic cars, and airplanes.  He restored a ’51 Ford Victoria classic car and built an experimental aircraft in his large workshop behind his house.  He also whittled and did amazing wood and metal art.   He was never afraid to try new things like water and snow-skiing.  There was nothing he couldn’t fix.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and a great laugh that we will all miss so much.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services or donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check with the specific publication or platform for their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may require you to submit through a funeral home or online portal, while others may accept direct submissions from family members.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Just be sure to store it in a safe place where it can be easily found after your passing.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Should I include humor in an obituary?

If the deceased had a great sense of humor, it's perfectly fine to inject some levity into the obituary. Just be sure to keep it tasteful and respectful.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's values or spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or death that you'd rather not share publicly, it's okay to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that the goal is to honor the person's memory, not to sensationalize their passing.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Be sure to specify the organization and any relevant details.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the text multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it before submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check their policies before submitting.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a significant anniversary or special occasion, check with the original publication or platform for their reprint policies.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

DON'T hesitate to ask! Funeral homes often provide guidance or writing services. You can also hire a professional obituary writer or seek help from a friend or family member with strong writing skills.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Taking on this task during bereavement can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting support from loved ones or seeking guidance from a funeral director or counselor. Remember that it's okay to take your time and prioritize self-care during this challenging period.

Can I include social media handles in an obituary?

If the deceased was active on social media and you'd like to share their profiles or hashtags, many publications now allow this. Just be sure to follow their guidelines for formatting and content.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Start by brainstorming memories and anecdotes about the deceased. You can also look at examples online or consult with others who knew them well. The goal is to capture their essence and spirit in a few paragraphs.

Can I include funeral service details in an obituary?

Absolutely! Providing details about visitation hours, funeral services, and burial arrangements helps ensure that loved ones can attend and pay their respects.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

If family members or friends have differing opinions about what should be included in the obituary, try to find common ground through open communication. Ultimately, it's up to the primary decision-makers (e.g., spouse, children) to make final decisions about content.
