Cordell R. Boss - March 12, 1942 - July 28, 2023

Departed: 07/28/2023 (Orrville)
Obituary Preview: Cordell Raymond Boss, 81, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Orrville, Ohio, passed away peacefully Friday, July 28, 2023, at Heritage Estates in Gering, Nebraska. In accordance with Cordell’s wishes, a memorial and interment burial of ashes will take place in Orrville, Ohio at a later date.
Cordell was born March 12, 1942, in Orrville, Ohio, to Raymond and Anna Jane (Miller) Boss. He grew up in Kidron, Ohio and graduated from Dalton High School with the class of 1960. He enlisted with the Ohio National Guard in 1964 and served with the 145th infantry until his honorable discharge in 1970. Cordell was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Myers on September 24, 1966.
The couple made their home in Kidron, Ohio on the Boss family farm where they began their family that would include five children: Cheryl, Todd, Matthew, Kyle, and Erin. Cordell and Barb partnered together in Boss Farms which also included Cordell’s brother Hartley and their parents. This later became Boss Cattle where they raised purebred Angus seedstock in partnership with their youngest son, Kyle. Cordell was passionate about raising and showing competitive cattle at the county, state, and national level. This was something the whole family enjoyed growing up, and a passion that continues with one of his grandsons today. Cordell and Barb led their children on to win Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at the Ohio State Fair twice (1988 and 1995), Grand Champion Market Steer at the Ohio State Fair three times (1987, 1990, and 1996), Grand Champion Market Steer at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in 1988, Reserve Grand Champion Maine Anjou Bull at the NAILE in 2002, as well as having numerous champion animals at the county fair level. Throughout their 52 years of marriage, Cord and Barb pursued their livelihood of farming and ranching starting in Ohio and would later relocate to Nebraska where they would retire in Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 2016.
Cordell was inducted into the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, as he was recognized as one of the premier softball pitchers in Wayne County and one of the most successful pitchers in Ohio fast pitch softball from 1963-1977. During those years, Cordell was a team member for Orr Parks, Shearer Implements, Kidron Merchants, and Mt. Eaton Quality Block. Cordell pitched multiple no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game, but while playing for the Kidron Merchants, he pitched a no-hitter to win the 1973 Ohio State Championship game. He was also named to the all-time all-star team of the Kidron Merchants. Cordell made many lifelong friendships during his years of softball that he always cherished. He was an active member of the Salem Mennonite Church where he was a board member, and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a fan of everything sports. If he wasn’t outside doing what he loved by working cattle or tending crops, you could find him enjoying watching whatever sports game was on regardless of the sport. Cordell was as loyal as they come, and family always came first. He loved to be outside keeping busy with cattle chores, farming, and gardening. In retirement, he became known for raising some of the best cantaloupe anyone has ever eaten. Even with all of his accomplishments, Cordell would tell everyone and anyone that marrying the love of his life, Barb, was the best thing that ever happened to him. After Barb passed away in 2018, a part of Cordell went with her. He is now whole again in Heaven because Barb is back by his side.

Maryalice Roush - December 27, 1918 - June 09, 2022

Departed: 06/09/2022 (Orrville)
Obituary Preview: Maryalice Roush of Orrville passed away at OrrVilla on June 9, 2022 at the age of 103.
There will be a memorial service at the United Church of Christ in Orrville on Tuesday June 14 at 11 a.m. Following a simple lunch in the fellowship hall, her remains will be buried at the Wooster Cemetery. The Gresser Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Maryalice was born in Canton, Ohio, on December 27, 1918, to J. Edwin and Martha Teeter Roush. When Mr. Roush became unemployed during the Depression, the family moved to a farm on the Back Orrville-Wooster Road in 1934. While helping with the farm work as a teenager, Maryalice set her sights on getting an education. She graduated high school in 1936 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in art education from Ohio University in 1940.
Maryalice’s goal had been to become an art teacher, However, school districts did not have the resources to include art in their curriculum during the World War II years. So instead, she worked at Sugardale Foods as a secretary and then at Wooster Rubber. In the 1950’s she was employed as an executive secretary at the Firestone Tire Company in Akron.
Maryalice commuted to work in Akron from the family farm in a carpool. One of her fellow carpoolers knew of her art education aspirations. One weekend this friend had a chance encounter with the superintendent of the Firelands school district in Lorain County, who mentioned he was looking for an art teacher. The ride share friend urged Maryalice to contact the Firelands superintendent. With trepidation she did, and she got the job.
The following school year, there was an opening for an art teacher in the Orrville school system and Maryalice took the position. She taught in the Orrville schools for 25 years, taking off one year to earn her master’s degree at Ohio University. For years she was the only art teacher in the elementary schools and would go from grade school to grade school teaching 1st and 2nd grades for a couple weeks and then 3rd and 4th for a couple weeks, and so on. She is remembered fondly by many former students.
Maryalice was an active member of Christ United Church of Christ: teaching Sunday School to fortunate youth and adults, and a founding member of the church’s Green Team. Her concern for the environment was evident in the two homes she had built—one a passive solar two-story home, and the other a more modest straw bale home. She was instrumental in the church installing solar panels on the church garage as a way to reduce the use of non-renewable sources for electricity production.
She was also the church’s artist-in-residence; sewing banners hung throughout the church, providing Sunday flowers for the altar, directing and designing costumes for the annual Madrigal, and designing windows which were executed in stained glass by Gary Burkey. She was the recipient of the United Church Homes’ prestigious Ben M. Herbster Award for exemplary philanthropic spirit and achievements.
Maryalice was an active member of local, state and national teachers’ associations, the Smithville Garden Club, the Smithville Grange, and served as a volunteer and secretary for the Wayne County Habitat for Humanity.
Above all, Maryalice was known to her family, friends and colleagues as a powerful example of how to live a Christian life.
She is survived by and remembered with affection by first cousin Paul Roush and nieces and nephews: Donald Martin, Craig Martin, Beth Galloway, Roberta Morgan, Deborah Martin, Mary Hall, John Roush, Deana Wright, and Joe Roush.
