Obituary Preview: Bernice D. Johnson was born August 31, 1932, in Enfield, North Carolina, the oldest of three children and the only daughter to James H. and Leanna D. Harvey. She departed this life on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Bluegrass Care Navigators in Hazard, Kentucky.
She was the widow of the late Clarence C. Johnson and the mother of her only child, a beloved daughter, Ann Elisabeth; the sister of Benjamin and Romeo Harvey both of Detroit Michigan, all preceded her in death.
Bernice graduated as Salutatorian from Eastman High School in Enfield.  She joined Daniel Chapel Baptist Church at a young age, and was a Sunday School Teacher and a faithful member until she relocated.  In 1954, she was accepted in the nursing program at Saint Agnes School of Nursing/St. Augustine College in Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated second in her class. She continued her education at Women’s Hospital in Boston to advance her studies in Obstetrics nursing.  She enrolled in the Williamson Branch of Marshall University, Eastern Kentucky and Virginia State Universities where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988.  She became a Charter member in 1970 of the Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Kappa Chapter.
With accolades too many to mention, Bernice worked at and was head nurse at numerous hospitals, as well as the Medical Coordinator/Director at the Mingo Head Start program, and was Board Certified in Community Health by the American Nurses Credentialing Program.
She proudly served two terms as Secretary for the Williamson Branch of the NAACP and co-Chairman of the program committee.  She was the recipient of the Nursing Excellence Award from the Williamson Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of many local community programs and organizations including being a proud member and past president of The Huntington Chapter of Links, Incorporated,
Bernice devoted her life and love for people always remaining committed to the community with taking blood pressure readings at local Senior centers, preparing monthly newsletters on current health issues for the parishioners at the Logan Church First Baptist Church, where she was an active and faithful member, serving as Missionary President. She loved and protected animals and was a member of the U.S. Humane Society and supported the SOS (Save our Strays organization).
Bernice leaves behind a proud and treasured legacy and will be remembered with love by a host of co-workers, church members, friends and by all who knew her.
She leaves cherished memories of a life well lived and love to Sisters-in-law Bernedette and Shirley Harvey of MI; nephews Brock Harvey of GA, James and Brando Harvey of MI; cousins Prince Davis of CA, Deborah Freeman of NY and George M. Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, April 22, 2022 at Logan Street First Baptist Church in Williamson, West Virginia.  Officiant will be Reverend Gerald Dotson, pastor.  Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. until time of service.  Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens in Huddy, Kentucky.  Pallbearers will be family and friends. Linwood Starling - April 14, 1935 - March 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: Linwood Alexander Starling, 86, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2022 in the Nella's Autumn Nursing Home in Elkins, West Virginia where he has resided for the past three years,
He was born in Williamson, West Virginia on April 14, 1935 to the late Edward Sr. and Mary Ellen Starling.  After completing his education, he joined the United States Army.  Upon his return to Williamson, he worked in the coal mines.  Before retiring, he was a self-employed contractor for a number of years. He was a life-long resident of Williamson, was well known throughout Mingo County and was of the Presbyterian faith.   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings; Johnny, Millard, Huzel, Louise, Carl Sr., Jane, Thuman Sr., Edward Jr., Calvin, Emory, Guy, Sr. and Charles Sr.  He was the last surviving member of his original family.
He leaves heartfelt memories of  his productive life to the remainder of his family; two devoted nephews, Charles (Cindy) Starling, Jr. of New York and Carl Starling, Jr. of Maryland and a host of other nephews, nieces and cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, West Virginia. Officiant will be Elder Rick Wilkerson, pastor of Pentecostal Tabernacle United Holiness Church in Williamson, West Virginia.  Under the direction of Commander Raymond Brown, Military Rites will be performed by the Kentucky Post 141 from Belfry, Kentucky.  Arrangements are entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home.

Melvin A. Slade Sr. - May 30, 1946 - March 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Melvin A. Slade Sr., age 75 who resided at 127 Empire Street in Kimball, WV departed this life on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Welch Community Hospital in Welch, WV.  He was born in Kimball on the 30th day of May, 1946 and the son of the late William W. Sr. and Virgie L. (Dallas) Slade.  He was a graduate of Kimball High School and had lived in Mt. Vernon, NY for several years.  Melvin was known as a skilled Contractor and a gardener with a "green thumb."  He was a member of Miracle Mt. Carmel Church of God in Kimball and for many years a faithful member of Midway-Shiloh Church in Keystone, WV.  In addition to his parents, William Sr., and Virgie, Melvin was preceded in death by one son Kareem and a grandson, Keonte; his brother, Rufus and three sisters:  Beverly, Evelyn and Sandra.  Melvin will be remembered for his heart of love and his willingness to help others.  He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving, devoted wife of 26 years, Teresa A. Slade of the home and their son, Melvin A. Slade III., of Bluefield, WV, Melvin A. Slade Jr., of Philadelphia, PA, Alvin Gravely of Kimball and Dwayne Slade; two brothers, William W. (Patricia) Slade Jr., of Princeton, WV and Garland R. (Sharon) Slade of North Carolina; three sisters: Joanne Smith, Vivian Stewart and Barbara J. Deveaux  all of Mt. Vernon; his grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; his many friends; which includes special friends: Lonnie Parker, Conner Braggs, Lloyd Lipscomb, Mike Bishop, Pastor Georgia Smith and a very special friend, whom he regarded as a daughter, Erica Craighead.  A Celebration of Life Service for Melvin A. Slade Sr., will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Miracle Mt. Damita J. "Toe-Toe" Swain - January 21, 1956 - March 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Damita J. "Toe-Toe" Swain age 66 of Welch, WV who departed this life on Thursday, March 3, 2022 in the comforts of her home.  She was born and lived the greater part of her life in Wilcoe, WV.  Damita was born on the 21st day of January in 1956 and the sixth child of Alexander Hylton and Evelyn (Saunders) Harmon.  Damita, who was lovingly known as "Toe-Toe,"  joined First Baptist Church in Wilcoe at an early age.  She was a graduate of Gary High School and became a homemaker.  She enjoyed cooking; especially crock pot recipes, was a vegetable gardener and enjoyed mountain walks.  Damita was independent and very happy when she became a licensed driver and to have her own vehicle.  Damita was an avid news and all sports' television fan who kept a close watch on politics and politicians.  Her desire was to see the City of Welch and McDowell County prosperous and  thriving as it was in earlier times.  Damita was preceded in death by her parents and siblings:  Ronnie and Gerodd (Sharon) Harmon, Amelda (Edward Jr.) Wade and Sandra Hopkins.  Damita loved her Family dearly. She had a nice, thoughtful and caring spirit and will be remembered by her only brother, Tyrone Harmon of Alexandria, VA and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins; a devoted niece, Rhonda Wade of Washington, DC; her sister-in-law, Betty Harmon and brother-in-law, Roger Hopkins both of Maryland; her former husband and best friend, William Swain of Elbert, WV; her neighbors and the Staff at the Payne Building in Welch.  A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Damita J. Obituary Preview: On Wednesday, February 9, 2022 Mrs. Valarie Regina Easley age 71, a life long resident of Northfork, WV who gained her wings, as she peacefully departed this life at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV.  She was born in Welch, WV on November 7, 1950 and the daughter of the late Bill and Virginia (Scruggs) Mitchell.  Valarie was educated in the McDowell County Public School System.  She was a devoted homemaker who loved to cook, do laundry and take care of her family and home.  She enjoyed shopping and watching television; especially the reality shows.  Valarie will be remembered for her pleasant spirit, meeting others always with a smile, as she never met a stranger.  She had a sincere willingness to help others in anyway that she possibly could it didn't matter how great or how small.  Valarie's "catch phrase" was, "What You Mean?"  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Priscilla Easley, one brother, LeRoy James Scruggs and her long time companion, Tommy Bigelow.  Mrs. Valarie Regina Easley leaves a life time of cherished memories to her children:  Eugene T. Geneva F. Collins - October 24, 1928 - February 08, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Geneva Franklin Collins age 93, a long time resident of Capels, WV who was called from labor to reward on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in (Newton) Hickory, NC where she had lived for the past four years.  She was born in Lancaster, PA on the 24th day of October, 1928 and the daughter of the late Charles and Irene (Massie) Franklin.  She was a devoted, loving wife to her husband, the late Eugene Collins for over 50 years and was a devoted, loving Mother to her Children.  Before moving to NC and her health would allow, she was a very faithful member of the Royal Baptist Church in Capels and the Chorus.  Her pastimes were spent watching her most favorite television game shows:  The Price Is Right, Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy.  She loved visiting her family and friends and was a very skilled driver, even beyond her years.  In addition to her parents, Charles and Irene Franklin and her husband, Deacon Eugene Collins, Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Jean Collins and her granddaughter, Robyn Collins Anderson; six siblings:  Bill and George Franklin, Aileen Chapman, Irene Sandusky, Mable Lancaster and Mildred Thompson.  Mrs. Collins lived a "Blessed Life," with a heart full of love for her Family and others.  She was a faithful supporter of the St. Jude's Foundation for Children and the last surviving member of her original family.  A life time of wonderful memories will be shared by her children:   Gloria (Booker T.) Obituary Preview: Frank Thomas White Sr., age 60 of Lawrenceville, GA; formerly of Huntington, WV, who departed this life on Monday, February 7, 2022 in Lawrenceville.  Frank was born on the 28th day of September, 1961 in Huntington and the son of the late Thelma M. White and Fred A. Bollard.  Frank was a 1979 graduate of Huntington East High School and was baptized in 1980 at Christ Temple AOH in Huntington.  For a number of years, he had managed several department and grocery stores.  After moving to Georgia, Frank received his Bachelor's degree in 2009 from Kennesaw State University and began his second career as a teacher and was a basketball coach.  In earlier years, he enjoyed coaching one of his son's Little League Football Teams.  Frank and his wife of 34 years,  Annette "Tina" joined the Thankful Baptist Church Family in Kennesaw, after being so warmly embraced as visitors.  Frank loved the Lord and his Family. He and his wife raised their children in a loving home that honored God.  Frank enjoyed watching CNN and different sports on television. He loved spending time with all of his children and grandchildren and was very proud of all of their many accomplishments.  In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by three of his siblings:  Gwen Oakley, Dorothy White and Lynette White and his mother-in-love, Roberta Thompson.  Frank leaves a life time of cherished, treasured memories to his wife, Annette and children:  Frank T. "Tony" Wray age 41 a lifelong resident of Welch, WV, who departed this life at (WVU) Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.  Tony was born April 10, 1980  in Welch and the son of Rhonda L. (Chatten) and the late Alphonso "Bro" Wray III.  Tony was a graduate of Mount View High School and had attended St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Welch. Tony first began working at Goodson's Supermarket and was later employed by the Commission on Aging both located in Welch.  He had worked at Superior Wells in Kimball, WV and was last employed as a Correctional Officer at Stevens Correctional Center in Welch, after 15 years of employment due to health challenges.  Tony genuinely lived each day to generously show love and concern to his Family and to others. He enjoyed family activities and was known as "the Grill Master."  His pastimes were spent watching television.  In addition to his Father, Alphonso "Bro,"  (who passed on Wednesday, October 6, 2021), Tony was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Allie M. and Hattie B. Chatten and paternal grandparents, Alphonso II. and Madeline D. Wray.  Tony leaves life long, cherished memories to his Mother, Rhonda Wray; his Wife, soulmate and best friend, Shenika T. Ward Wray and their girls:  Tesmaudia N. Ward, Ty'Quashia S.M. Wray and Tiychiera N. Wray all of the home; his Nephew, A.J. Hairston age 73 of Charleston, WV who departed this life on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at the Hospice Care Center in Charleston.  Brenda was born in Berwind, WV on November 10, 1948.  She was the daughter of the late Travelous R. Hairston Sr. and Viola Purse Hairston.  She attended Big Creek High School and later graduated from the Job Corps in Charleston.  After graduation, Brenda went to Philadelphia, PA where she lived and worked until she returned to Berwind.  She later moved to Bluefield, VA and then to Charleston, where she remained until her death.  Her interests included growing beautiful house plants, watching basketball and football, and most of all spending time with her daughter, Carla, and her grandchildren, Dante, Raekwon, and Gracelynn.  Her sweet smile brightened the day of anyone who came in contact with her.  She greeted everyone with this warm and beautiful smile.  Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Travelous Sr. and Viola Hairston and her sister, Augusta Ann Hairston.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-love, Carla and Marvin Johnson of Charleston, who were her caregivers.  She leaves six siblings to cherish her memories; Irene and Pastor George Masterson of Coalwood, WV; Michelle and Stacey White of Tazewell, VA; Jimmie Hairston of Voorhees, NJ; Curtis Smith of Richmond, VA; Kennedy and Jackie Hairston of Berwind and  Travelous "T-Bone" Haiston Jr.,  of Berwind.  Most of all she leaves many cherished memories to her beloved grandchildren; Dante Hairston of Florida; Raekwon and Jessica Lane of Charleston and "the Queen" Gracelynn Lane, who was her only great-grandchild.  She is survived by her oldest friend, Juanita Hopkins and a host of cousins and friends. Sylton Carl Hurdle-a man of faith, renowned clinical education instructor, respiratory care practitioner, mentor, and a friend to all, died at his home in Pelham, Alabama, on December 02, 2021, surrounded by family.  He was 68.  Born July 31, 1953, in Los Angeles, California to John Alexander Hurdle and Sophia Beatrice (Jackson) Hurdle., he attended Nogales High School in West Covina, California. He continued his education and graduated from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA with an Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy. Shortly afterward he became a Registered Respiratory Therapist Practitioner. He later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Sylton was preceded in death by his oldest brother, John A. Hurdle Jr. of Los Angeles, California, and his second oldest brother James Hurdle of Los Angeles, California. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rayna Lynette Cloyd Hurdle of Pelham, Alabama, his three sons Sean Brandon Hurdle (wife, Carmen Barnes) of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Briton Lee Hurdle (wife, Kristin Hurdle and children, Isaac Hurdle-Ramirez, Elenna Hurdle, and Elena Christiansen) of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Evan Cloyd Hurdle of West Covina, California, and his siblings, Billy Hurdle (wife, Valeria Hurdle) of Carson, California, Marsha Hurdle-Whittingham of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Donald Hurdle of Yorba Linda, California, and Sylton's twin sister Sylvia Hurdle of Carson, California and his brother-in-law, Lucky Cloyd (wife, Libby Cloyd) of Hoover, Alabama.  Also, he had a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.   Sylton and Rayna were celebrating their recent move to Pelham and Sylton's retirement from over 40 years of commitment to the Respiratory Therapy profession. Sylton was a pillar in the community and was a man of unrelenting faith. When Sylton was not doing home repairs, working, hiking, working out, or watching movies with his family you could always find him in his home Church, Calvary Baptist in La Puente, California. As a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and mentor you could find Sylton at almost every Church function; even some of the ones that were in Spanish! Sylton's faith in God, kindness, honesty, sense of humor, and willingness to provide guidance changed the lives of many and he will be greatly missed.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Della Kate Ferguson-Powell age 86 of 113 Blue Demon Drive in Elkhorn, WV was born January 21, 1935 in Coalwood, WV.  She was one of eighteen children born to the late Clint Sr., and Sallie A. (Wade) Ferguson.  She was a graduate of Excelsior High School  and married "the love of her life," William Henry Powell Sr., on February 19, 1953 In Northfork, WV.  She was  employed for a number of years by the McDowell County Board of Education and last worked as a custodian at the (former) Northfork High School.  Mrs. Powell was a member and served as Mother of the Upland Missionary Baptist Church in Upland, WV for many, many years.  She enjoyed going to Church, cooking and spending quality time with her Family. She was an avid shopper and her favorite shopping centers were Roses and Wal-mart.  Her most favorite pastimes were spent enjoying the scenery while traveling.  In addition to her parents and her husband, William Sr., she was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Powell and sixteen of her siblings:  Clara, William Henry, Clint Jr., Josephine, James, John, Marsha, Cesheloia, George, Benjamin, Helen, Harry, Pearl, Eleanora, Thelma, and Mary.  On Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, WV the Lord called Della Kate Ferguson Powell from labor to reward.   She will be lovingly remembered by her children, her family and all that knew her for having a "heart-of-gold."  She leaves cherished memories to her devoted children:  Rannetta J, Brenda J., and William H. Keith-Lane age 69 of Kimball, WV; formerly of Welch, WV who transitioned from earth to heaven on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg, VA.  Minister Vickie, as she was lovingly known was born on the 7th day of May, 1952 in Newhall, WV.  She was one of fourteen children born into the loving parentage of Theodore Sr. and Pauline (Woods) Keith.  She was a graduate of Big Creek High School and had attended West Virginia State College. She was a homemaker and had worked as a cook at the (old) West Virginia Drive-In for several years.  Minister Vickie was a devoted, faithful member of the (former) Free Mission In Christ Church in Yukon, WV and was the last charter member.  She had served as both a Minister and the Church Treasurer and had diligently worked wherever needed.  She loved the Lord, her family and family reunions.  Also admired for being a true "people person,"  Minister Vickie enjoyed helping others; especially during the area food and clothing distributions where she often volunteered.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five of her siblings:  Theodore Jr., Mason, Warren and Wayne Keith and Janice G. Hayford. She graduated from Liberty High School and worked as a Social Worker for the State of West Virginia.   She served as City Councilwoman for the City of Williamson . She was the director of the Southern West Virginia Action for Youth Center located on Vinson Street in Williamson, West Virginia.  She was a member of Logan Street First Baptist Church and a member of the Senior Choir.  She served as a volunteer at the annual Vacation Bible School where her delicious homemade chili was enjoyed by the children and staff.
She leaves cherished memories to her son, Terry (Marcella) Jackson, Sr. of Williamson, West Virginia and daughter, Josie (James) Watkins of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Zada Willene Lucinda Stowe Hairston, 102, of Williamson, West Virginia, departed this life on Monday, November 1, 2021 in Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center in South Williamson, Kentucky.  She was born on March 17, 1919 in Belmont, North Carolina to the late Robert James and Mary Grier Stowe.
Mrs. Hairston was a graduate of Reid School, which was later known as Reid High School.  She received her Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Southern West Virginia Community College in 1975.  She worked for over thirty years in the Mingo County Head Start Program.
Mrs. Hairston accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Belmont, North Carolina and was an active member.  She devoted much of her time to the missionary department and enjoyed working with the youth.  She was a devout Christian and became a member of the Logan First Baptist Church in 1946 when she married the Late Deacon Elbert P.F. Hairston. She served as Deaconess, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Senior Choir member, Charter member and President of the Nannie B. Perkins Guild, President of the Pastor’s Aid Club and Pastor’s Appreciation Day, Assistant Secretary of the Rose of Sharon Missionary Society, and Junior Mission Counselor.  She was the head counselor of the Tug River District Junior Missionary and Educational Convention. She was a long-standing member and treasurer of the Williamson Branch of the NAACP and one of the original counselors of the Williamson Branch of the NAACP Youth Council.  Mrs. Hairston was also a member and secretary of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of the Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
Mrs. Hairston has been the recipient of many awards over the years. In 2016 and at the age of 97, she received the Distinguished Mountaineer Award, which is the highest honor the West Virginia governor can bestow upon a non-native resident.  The award was presented by Former Governor Earl Ray Tomblin for her outstanding contributions throughout her lifetime. She was the Recipient of the Believe, Achieve, Succeed Award from Southern West Virginia Community College in 2010 and 2016.  Mrs. Hairston was recognized in 2018 by the Women’s Auxiliary of the West Virginia Baptist State Convention. Mrs. Hairston lived a life dedicated to love and service to the Lord and her fellowman.  She was loving to everyone and said that she “loved on purpose.“  She reminded us often that “we are not born just to be born, but we are all born for a purpose in God’s Masterful Plan, not only for our own lives, but in the lives of others.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Percy Foster Hairston; infant son, Percy Washington Hairston; three brothers, Clarence Washington Stowe, Allen Cephas Stowe, and Grier Willis Stowe; one sister, Sarah Stowe Davison and son-in-law Wayne Robinson Jones.
She deeply loved and was committed to her family, and they deeply loved her.  Children born to their blessed union, and who thank and praise God for her life include; Mary Willene (Henry) Moore and Eleanor Sue (Wayne) Jones both of Williamson, WV; Nancy Carroll (Aniedi) Abasiekong of Shelby, NC; Elizabeth Ann (Ronnie) Hill of Belmont, NC; Cynthia Jane (James) Hicks of Gastonia, NC; Elbert Stowe (Edelinda) Hairston of Belmont, NC; and Vivian Kay (Vance) Blade of Louisville, KY; eighteen (18) grandchildren and eleven (11) great-grandchildren, Patrick (Vanessa-Patrick Jr., Faith); Stacie; Susan (Dennis-Briella, Bryson); Henry (Amber-Mykah, Aniyah, Judah); Jillian (Darren); Leah; John; Michael (Hailey); Sarah (David-Dezmon, Rayana, David); Amy (Andrew); Nelson; Elbert A. Davis age 67, of Kyle, WV who departed this life on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Meadows Hospice House in Goochland, VA, was born on the 6th day of August, 1954 in Welch, WV.  He was the youngest of three children born to the late McKinley Sr. and Cora B. (Redd) Davis.  He was a graduate of  Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, FL and later was an honorably discharged Veteran of the United States Army.  For a number of years, he was a laborer with a Construction Company. He loved helping others and generously used the talents he was given.  He was known as  "Mr. Fix-it" by his family, friends and strangers; who were not strangers very long after meeting him.  Theaniel brought light, laughter and joy to anyone he came in contact with; especially to his family gatherings.  In addition to his father, McKinley Sr. and mother, Cora, he was preceded in death by his brother, McKinley Jr., and a grandson, Jordan M. Obituary Preview: Early on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, Alphonso "Bro" Wray III., age 70 who resided at 384 Stewart Street in Welch, WV departed this life at the Hubbard House in South Charleston, WV following a long illness.  Bro as he was affectionately known was born June 1, 1951 in Welch and the son of the late Alphonso II., and Madeline (Dillard) Wray.  After completing his education at Welch High School, he lived in Cleveland, OH for a short time and returned to Welch and began working at U.S. Steel No. 51 Coal Mines in Pineville, WV.  He joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Welch, where he faithfully served until declining health as an Usher and a member of the Praise Choir.   He was a member of the Kimball Lodge No. 13.  Bro was a "people person," who had a genuine concern for others. He enjoyed watching television; especially Gunsmoke, both football and basketball games and the Swamp People.  Bro will be remembered for his faithfulness to God and to his Church, and his values of  "family matters most."  In addition to his  parents, he was preceded in death by two of his sisters, Thelma and Lucy Mae.  Alphonso "Bro," was the devoted husband of Rhonda L. Chatten-Wray for 48 years; a devoted father to their four sons:  Alphonso Wray IV., of the home; Antonio N. (Shenika) Wray of Welch, Allan B. Wray Sr., of Bluefield, WV and Andre' N. Obituary Preview: Darnell William Gravely 72 of Kimball, West Virginia; formerly of Rocky Mount, Virginia who departed this life on Sunday, September 26, 2021 in the comforts of his home.  He was born September 25, 1949 and the first born son of George and  Geraldine (Tucker) Gravely who resided in Bottom Creek, West Virginia.  He was a 1968 graduate of  Welch High School and furthered his education at the Danville Community College in Danville, Virginia.  After many years of employment, he retired from Fieldcrest Cannon Mill in Fieldale, Virginia.  Darnell was an avid out doors man who spent countless hours working on vehicles and doing lawn work.  He worked well with his hands and was known as "Mr. Fix-it," by his siblings.  He enjoyed traveling and shopping at both Lowe's and Walmart Stores.  Darnell took great pride in being the "best big brother" to his siblings and his sense of humor endeared him even more so to each one of them.  In addition to his parents, Darnell was preceded in death by one brother, Jeffrey L. Gravely.  He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie F.
