John E. Nagel - March 27, 1959 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Jersey City)
Obituary Preview: John E. Nagel was born to Catherine Hartnett and John A. Nagel on March 27, 1959 in Jersey City, where he remained a proud lifelong resident. He was a graduate of St. Paul’s Grammar School in Greenville, Hudson Catholic High School, and was a scholarship runner at Saint Peter’s University (then College), where he also earned a Master’s Degree. He was accepted into Dartmouth College, an Ivy League institution, but selflessly chose to remain in Jersey City as to not leave his mother, who had lost her husband, his father, a few years prior. His love of coaching began at a young age, inspired by his own coaches, Bob Hurley (grammar school), Paul Lenczuk (high school), and Jim Jacobson (college), going back to Saint Paul’s Grammar School to lead the youth track program there.
John worked for his beloved City of Jersey City for over 20 years, taught and coached track at Hudson Catholic for many years, and most notably coached track at Saint Dominic Academy for 46 years, where he ultimately became Director of Athletics. He also helped coach track at St. Peter’s Preparatory School from 2015 to 2019. He mentored countless students throughout his time at the schools he so proudly worked at, most (if not all) of whom he kept in contact with long after they graduated.
Above all, he was an incredibly proud father to his daughter, Ashley, whom he adored more than anything. He loved all sports and traveled to multiple countries and all 50 states to see games, and as Ashley grew up, she joined him on many of those trips, including to places such as Munich, Germany and Mexico City, Mexico. She was with him on his final MLB Spring Training trip to Florida, where they spent a great few days together, before he became ill and ultimately died after a month in a Florida hospital.
Throughout his life, John received many accolades and honors such as the Hudson County All Sports Hall of Fame, the Jersey Journal Everyday Hero Award, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame, among many, many more.
John was a member of many local organizations. He was an elected member of the Jersey City Board of Education in the 1990s. Following in his father’s footsteps, John was also a longstanding member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Father Mychal Judge Division One to honor his beloved Irish heritage. He also served as President of the Hudson County Track Coaches Association for many years.
John was also the public address announcer at various local sporting events, from high school to college level, which he took great joy in, most especially the legendary Saint Anthony’s basketball games.
John truly lived an amazing life, always doing it “his way.” He is survived by his pride and joy, his daughter Ashley, as well as Ashley’s boyfriend of 5+ years, Nate, whom John adored, their chihuahua Walnut, and his former wife Maureen, who became his dear friend and a big help in his caretaking in his final years. He is also survived by many friends and all whom he left an impact on. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Mount Sinai Hospitals for their dedicated care over the years. Extra extra special thanks to Doctor Howard Levine and Diana, as well as Doctor Carl Gargiulio, who were ALWAYS there for a call and an explanation, no matter the circumstance.
Visitation will be at the Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave., Jersey City on Monday, April 29th from 3-8 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Church on Tuesday Morning at 10 AM. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
Donations can be made to the John E. Nagel Memorial Fund at Saint Dominic Academy.
