Gerald's life was dedicated to his children, whom he provided for as a carpenter and farmer. His greatest source of pride and joy was being a father, a role he cherished and loved deeply.

Obituary Preview: Judge Robert “Bob” Eugene Crist, passed away on March 30, 2024. Bob was born on September 17, 1924 in New Boston, Mo., to W. Everett Crist and Erna Liebhart Crist.
Bob spent the first 16 years of his life in New Boston, a small town in Linn County, Mo. He received his elementary education in a one-room school building in New Boston. He received his high school education in a rural consolidated school in Shelby, MO, graduating in 1941 with a class of 30. He was the valedictorian of the class. After graduation he trained as a butcher with Temple Stephens Grocery Company in Kirksville, Mo. For the next two years he worked in Kirksville, Moberly, Columbia and Brookfield. In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After medic basic training he was accepted into the Army Specialized Training Program at John Tarleton University in Stephensville, TX. After one year of college and 60 hours of engineering college credits, he was transferred to the 99th Infantry Division. His 99th played a prominent role in the bloody Battle of the Bulge in World War II where he was captured by the enemy and escaped. He was awarded 3 European Battle Star Medals, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star and an Infantry Combat Badge. He was a member of the Shelbina American Legion for more than 70 years.
Following the war, Bob entered the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia where he rented an apartment from J.C. Penney’s sister. After graduating in 1950, he was hired by Fred Bollow to work in Shelbina. He continued in the practice of law in Shelbina until August 1978.
He married the love of his life, Betty Lou LeGrand, on April 29, 1951 in Shelbina. They were married almost 70 years and together they raised five children while devoting extensive time and resources to restoring the historic Benjamin House to its original beauty. Bob would often say “second to my family, working on the many ongoing projects of the Benjamin House brought me the greatest joy.” Bob was a longtime member of the Shelbina Christian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher. Bob served as president of the Shelbina Men’s Club and was a member of the Shelbina Masonic Lodge.

On October 24, 1994 the Missouri House of Representatives passed a House Resolution honoring his 16 years of meritorious service as a judge and referenced in the resolution that at the time of his retirement “Judge Crist has authored more appellate court opinions than any other judge in Missouri history.”

Karla K Black - October 29, 1939 - January 06, 2024

Departed: 01/06/2024 (Shelbina)
Obituary Preview: Karla Kaye Black, age 84, of Shelbina, MO passed away Saturday, January 6 while being treated at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Karla was born October 29, 1939 in Evansville, Indiana to Karl and Mignonne Kilian. She was baptized October 14, 1951. She was married to Jerry Patterson and later Dennis Black, both deceased. Karla is survivedby her sister, Susie (Bob) Karlson of Batavia, OH. She is also survived by her four children: Stephen (Jennifer) Patterson of Shelbina, MO, Devin (Kim) Black of Perry, MO, Karen Wright of Columbia, MO, and
Keith (Blanche) Patterson of Columbia, MO. Her grandchildren include Matthew Patterson of Columbia, MO; Michael (Madelyn) Patterson of Wentzville, MO, Miranda Patterson, attending Maryville University; and Faith Wright of Raleigh, NC.
Karla was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Wendel Kilian, and an infant son, Scott Jerome Patterson.
Karla can best be described as a “tireless worker with a servant’s heart” – she enjoyed serving others and worked hard all her life… setting a “high bar” for her family and big shoes to fill.
At 13 years old, Karla was bussing tables at the local café. By 16, she was working at two different clothing stores in downtown Hannibal.
She loved playing badminton in high school and played basketball in church league at Fifth Street Baptist. She always lamented there was no high school basketball for girls at that time. Unfortunately, her athletic skills skipped a generation! But she was greatly rewarded by her grandkid’s talents in football, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, and gymnastics. Karla attended Hannibal-LaGrange College and got an associate degree in Secretarial Skills. Karla married Jerry Patterson on June 2, 1961. She always joked about having to interrupt one of Jerry’s poker games one Saturday night so he could take her to the hospital for the birth of her first, and favorite son, Stephen!
Karla married Dennis Black in 1974, moved to the farm, and raised 4 children: Stephen, Devin, Karen, and Keith. While driving trucks and tractors wasn’t her highest skillset, she made the best farm meals with peach cobbler being one of her specialties.
In 1987 Karla purchased a flower shop in Perry, MO and served the Perry community for nearly 30 years with Karla B’s Flowers. She loved her work and loved the patrons she served, working holidays, weekends, and late nights.
Following a mild heart attack in 2017, Karla moved to Salt River Community Care and proceeded to tease and antagonize the staff and her personal assistant and friend, Dayna Power, with her dry humor and snarky attitude. Karla’s favorite pastime and driving force has always been attending her grandkids athletic events. While she never officially “coached”, she always had plenty to say on the ride home from ballgames! Sometimes it was about her players… sometimes it was about the coaches! She was so blessed to enjoy some of the best times in South Shelby history by being able to attend State Championships in football and basketball! As Karla’s son writing this, I’m super proud of my Mom. She was a warrior… she battled through tough times and never quit. She worked hard and taught her kids the value of working hard and serving others. She was a devout Christian woman who performed many roles in her hometown churches of Fifth Street Baptist and Perry Baptist. As her health became challenging late in life, she stayed strong and battled as a “Warrior” – never giving up! Today she is with her Father in Heaven and catching up with all those who went ahead of her. Good job Mom! We are all better because of you! We strive to leave a legacy for our families like you!
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO with Mitchell Seaton officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal, MO. Visitation will be held from 9-11 am, Saturday morning, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Salt River Community Care or Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's death and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the person's life, share memories, and provide details about funeral or memorial services.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to enhance the obituary and make it more personal. Check with the publication or platform for their specific guidelines.
