Sharon was born May 18, 1939, in International Falls to Theodore and Edna (Walker) Arnold.

She was united in marriage to Nels Lundin Jr. June 9, 1956.

Sharon enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, canning vegetables from their garden, and playing cards with family members. She also liked working on puzzles, mowing the lawn, and blueberry picking. She was very proud of growing up and living her entire life on the family farmstead which her grandfather established 102 years ago. This farmstead is also known as McIntyre Hill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Edna Arnold; father and mother-in-law; Nels Sr. and Mabel Lundin; and sister-in-law, Sharon (Lundin) Fries.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 67 years, Nels Lundin Jr.; children, Tom (Laurie) and Greg (Lois) Lundin; grandchildren, Mandy (Paul) Chellew, Dustin (Janelle) Lundin, Erin (Mike) Phipps, and Erica Lundin; great-grandchildren, Olivia Phipps, Sydney Phipps, Corbin Phipps, Maggie Phipps, Aubry Lundin, Ethan Lundin, and Noah Chellew; sister, Carol Arnold; and sisters-in-law, Delores (Lundin) Holenko, and Janet (Lundin) Hansen.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Evangelical Covenant Church in International Falls.

Inurnment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery in International Falls.

Jeanine Louise Alich - August 25, 1940 - April 16, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jeanine Louise Alich, 83, of International Falls, Minnesota died April 16, 2024, in her home with family by her side.

Jeanine was born August 25, 1940, in Cass Lake, Minnesota to Lawrence and Evelyn Rountree. She later moved to International Falls where she went to school and graduated from Falls High School in 1958. She married John Alich on February 23, 1963.

Jeanine was a dedicated nurse who received her nursing degree from Misericordia College in Winnipeg, Ontario Canada. She worked many years as a Registered Nurse and later continued her education to become a Nurse Practitioner. She worked primarily at Good Samaritan Center and was the Director of Nursing for over 30 years. After leaving Good Samaritan, Jeanine renovated the family home and started Papermakers Place providing adult foster care.

After several years, she sold Papermakers Place and moved into town. As a dedicated nurse herself, she started teaching the next generation of nurses through Rainy River Community College, teaching the Certified Nursing Assistant Course and assisting with clinicals for the rest of the nursing programs. She additionally taught Personal Care Assistants for Carefree Living.

Jeanine was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She was generous in volunteering her time wherever there was a need. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and served in multiple roles including Regent. She also served as the Parish Nurse visiting parishioners to provide services or advisement for their medical needs.

She committed a great deal of time to Northern Options for Women from its inception. She served on the board for several years and volunteered many hours with clients as well as fundraising efforts.

Jeanine loved her family and friends. She loved the “get togethers” and tried to include as many family members as possible for every event. She felt everyone should enjoy family gatherings and often added friends to share her family. She loved getting together with friends: “Club” gatherings, Red Hats, bridge, “Wine Time”.

Jeanine was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Lawrence Rountree; her husband, John; and son, Tom.

She is survived by her children; Jim (Joy), Betty (Jim) Opdahl, Pete (Nikki) and daughter-in-law Charity; sisters Cheri Niles and Pat (Tom) Grams; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on May 7, 2024, at 11:00. Visitation will be one hour before.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Thomas Catholic School or Northern Options for Women.

Obituary Preview: Carol Lynn Belanger, 81, of International Falls Minnesota died April 10, 2024, at Rainy Lake Medical Center. She leaves behind a legacy of love and an indomitable zest for life.

Carol was born May 23, 1942, in International Falls to Mervin and Irene Kjellgren. She attended school in International Falls, graduating in 1960. She was united in marriage to Lynn Belanger on July 9, 1960.

Carol embraced a lifestyle that kept her always on the move, marked by her participation in sports, such as volleyball and curling. She was also a proficient bridge player, making her a formidable opponent and a sought-after teammate. Carol enjoyed many other card games and board games throughout her life, including Gin, Hand & Foot, Acey-Deucy, Nertz, and Cribbage.

In a demonstration of her dedication to lifelong learning, she returned to school, obtained a bachelor’s degree, and became a social worker for Koochiching County Family Services.

Upon retirement, Carol explored new horizons and learned to play the violin, becoming a cherished member of the Rainy Lake Community Orchestra and the Borderland Community Orchestra.

Carol's remarkable achievement of securing three holes-in-one stands as a testament to her talent and dedication to golf—a feat most golfers only dream of achieving once in their lifetime.

She was known for her sharp wit and love of pranks. Her sense of humor and playful spirit brought laughter and lightness everywhere, making her a beloved character among her family and friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, Alyce and Alfie Belanger; her brother, Gary Kjellgren; brothers-in-law, Carl Schell, LeRoy Belanger, Ray Dougherty, and Phil Arnold; sisters-in-law, Sue Dougherty, Shirley Arnold, and Sharon Averill.

She will be fondly and lovingly remembered by her husband of 63 years, Lynn; children Joe, Rob (Kari), and Tom; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Shelby, Nathan, Margeaux, and Jack; sister, Sharon Schell; sisters-in-law, Joan Belanger and Terri Rud; brothers-in-law, Carl Belanger and Chuck Averill; along with numerous other family members and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held July 5, 2024, 11:00 am, at Zion Lutheran Church in International Falls.

Obituary Preview: SHERYL (SHERRY) LYNN AUSTIN, 65, died suddenly at her home in Rochester, Minnesota on Friday, April 5, 2024. Or, as she would have put it, and her family would have joined in chorus, “...went home to her Lord and Savior.”

Sherry was born March 3, 1959 to Dwight and Marjorie (Neste) Austin, joining her seven older siblings in North St. Paul. In 1966 the family – Dwight, Marge, and the four youngest children – moved to International Falls, where Sherry lived most of her life. She graduated from International Falls High School in 1977 where beyond her studies she was active in sports, most notably volleyball, in orchestra playing the cello, and in the Evangelical Covenant Church where she participated in many ministries and activities through the years.

Sherry was creative and crafty, expressing her artistic gifts in sewing, home decorating, and helping friends pick out that just right thing. She had a deep appreciation for music and a talent for singing. Worship music brought her much joy and comfort, and in recent years she touched family and close friends with near daily shares of songs and scripture through texts and social media.

To the good fortune of many, Sherry was a passionate caregiver. To beloved young ones in childcare, to close friends in need, and most of all, to her dear mother Marge. Following Dwight’s death in 1992, Sherry was a constant companion and faithful helpmate until Marge’s passing in 2007. As observed and measured by human standards, Sherry’s life was hard. In the balance of life’s joys and pains, Sherry’s surely seemed weighted toward pain. Physical and more. But despite multiple batterings – through ups and downs, good days and bad stretches – she was buoyed by an unbreakable faith and hope in a loving and caring God. She believed in the ultimate unveiling of life’s puzzling questions of, “Why?”

Sheryl Lynn Austin was preceded in death by her parents, Dwight and Marjorie Austin, and sister-in-law, Jill Austin. She is survived by her seven siblings: Sharon (Mike) Eagen of Palm Bay, Florida; Joni (Lanny) Neel of Tangent, Oregon; John (Joanne) Austin of Palm Bay, Florida; Ike (Lori) Austin of Tucson, Arizona; Dave Austin of International Falls; Priscilla (Don) Berry of Bemidji; and Sandy (Bruce) Nyberg of Coon Rapids; plus numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Sherry’s Life will be held at the Evangelical Covenant Church in International Falls on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. Visitation will begin at noon, one hour prior to the celebration service.

She was a graduate of Falls High School. Myra enjoyed playing the piano, was an avid reader. She also loved being at Rainy Lake with the beautiful scenery and the feel of breezes off the lake.

Myra will be remembered for her quick wit and engaging smile.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Crawford; daughter, Lyn Bruce; and brother, Charles Lessard.

Myra is survived by her children, James Haglund, Michael Haglund, Wally Haglund, Susan Dow, and Kelly Haglund; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will take place at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Lillian LaForge - December 12, 2003 - March 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that the family of Lillian Marie LaForge announces her passing on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from a tragic car accident.

Lillian was born December 12, 2003, in St. Paul, Minnesota to her mother, Sara Grond, and biological father, Andrew LaForge.

At the age of five, Derick Vohler came into her life and essentially was her father. He has always been there for her. He watched Lily grow, cared for her, taught her so many things, and loved her like his own. He was always a constant support for Lily. In our eyes, Derick had a daughter and that was Lily.

Lily excelled at school and was an honor student. She also enjoyed being in dance and volleyball. Her dream was to become a nurse. She worked at Ridgeview and recently became a certified med tech. She was just becoming her own person and figuring life out. Jarrod Wold was the love of her life. They recently got a place together and were starting their life. Zeke, her fur baby, was attached to her. She had such a big heart and touched many people.

She loved making oreo balls with her little brother. She went through a “making slime” phase where Derick’s house turned into a slime factory. She loved pizza and could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She also loved going out to eat and traveling.

Her grandmother, Marcia Glover, loved her to the end of the earth and back. Lillian was such a special person. She cared for people more than people know. She made a difference and she mattered. To her family, she was their world. She was her mother’s mini me. They would argue and butt heads all of the time, but their love for each other was unmatched. There is a hole in her mother’s heart that is indescribable. Lily was so important to so many people outside of her family. The world was brighter with her in it.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Ariann Grond; biological father, Andrew LaForge; and her great-grandmother, Lillian Green whom she was named after.

She is survived by her mother, Sara Grond; father, Derick Vohler; brother, Bradley Grond, whom she shared an unbreakable bond with; grandparents, Marcia and Bill Glover and Ron and Edith LaForge; aunt, Laura Marie Glover, whom she got her middle name from; and other siblings, Jewel LaForge and Jayden LaForge.

Lily was smart, kind, and beautiful. She will be missed beyond comprehension. Words cannot describe this loss on our family. Lillian will forever be loved and never forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at the Evangelical Covenant Church luncheon hall in International Falls, MN.

Sandy was born on July 7, 1946, in St. Cloud, MN the daughter of John and Marge Vouk. Sandy received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joeseph, MN and went on to St. Cloud State University to earn her master’s degree in library science.

Sandy was united in marriage to Thomas Sakry. This union was blessed with two daughters. They made their home in International Falls where Sandy commuted to Virginia to work as a librarian.

Sandy loved working in the flower garden and was a wealth of botanical knowledge. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marge, and her brother, J.B.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Tom; daughters, Penny (Mike) Graham, and Pam (Justin) Holm; five grandchildren; her brothers: Tom, Bob, Rich and Brian Vouk; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in International Falls.

Visitation will be held at Green-Larsen Mortuary in International Falls on Monday, April 1, from 5 to 7:00 p.m. with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning 6:30 p.m.

Obituary Preview: Donna M. Ysen of International Falls, died on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the Rainy Lake Medical Center. Donna Mae Ysen was born on July 24th, 1962, to parents Shirley and Eino Rinne in International Falls, Minnesota. She married her best friend, Leslie Eugene Ysen, On October 11, 1985. Les and Donna meant everything to each other, and rarely spent even a day apart during their 39 years of marriage. Donna and Les welcomed their first baby, Jen (Kayla), into the world on November 15, 1983, and their second daughter, Christina (Teddy), on February 4, 1986. Donna’s daughters were her best friends and they meant the world to her. Donna was extremely proud of her four grandchildren Emma, Madalynn, and Oliver Saxton and Grayson Ysen.

Donna filled her day with visits from her children and grandchildren and looked forward to her regular phone calls with her siblings. Donna was blessed with 8 siblings, Terry (Kathy) Rinne, Patty (Frank) Pomeroy, Jim (Denise) Rinne, Wanda (Gabor) Tamas, Penny (Victor) Hiebert, Kip (Amanda) Cook, Tracy (Todd) Footer. She had a special connection with her cousin Kim Hebert and adored her many nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her father Eino Rinne, mother, Shirley Rinne and sister Judy Rinne.

Donna lived her best life because of the value she placed on family. She never missed one of her grandkid’s milestones and was so proud of her daughters and their families. She went on many adventures with her family. She looked forward to their yearly houseboat trips as well as fishing and ice fishing. To Donna, family was everything. She was blessed to live so close to her daughters and grandchildren.

Donna’s hands were never idle, and even while injured would be crocheting, painting, or sculpting. Donna loved having booths in many of the area’s craft fairs, and in her lifetime, she donated hundreds of crocheted hats. Her works are displayed proudly in the homes of her family and many members of the community.

Hays Hans Huddleston - September 02, 1973 - March 18, 2024

Obituary Preview: Hays Hans Huddleston, 50, of Loman, Minnesota passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024, at Essentia Health- St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota as a result from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

Hays was born September 2, 1973, in Los Angeles, California to Clayton and Sandra (Hays) Huddleston.

At six weeks old, his family moved to Indus, MN where they owned a cattle farm until Hays was about 7, then transitioned into a dairy farm until they started a log home business in 1985. As a child Hays started hauling feed buckets that were as big as him, it was then he learned his work ethic that followed him throughout his life.

He spent many years operating logging machines and the sawmill. After his dad passed in 2009, he worked for Mai Best Logging until he received his bachelor’s degree and was hired into the manager trainee program of Menards, where he was employed for the next ten years.

On February 17, 2018, Hays embarked on a beautiful journey of love and partnership, when he was united in marriage to Shari at Birchdale Church. They made their home in both the Loman and the Warren areas. While in his union to Shari, Hays really learned to embrace adventures of all kinds including waterpark adventures with his grandchildren, camping, and driving thousands of miles while creating memories with Shari. In addition, he had a great love for cars, music, and movies. His days in a racecar were some of his fondest memories and it was there he met some of his best friends.

As Hays had a “Gift for Gab” we were able to visit with somebody no matter where we were. Even while battling bipolar disorder for his adult life, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Hays always tried to be a follower of God, a good friend to all, and the best husband and grandpa he could be. He will be greatly missed.

Hays has been reunited with his dad, Clayton; grandparents, Edwin and Marion Hays and Ernie and Louise Huddleston; brother, Edward; nephew, Eddy Huddleston; and father-in-law, Ron Timm; and cousin, Scott Penzal. He is survived by his loving wife, Shari Huddleston; mother and closest confidant, Sandy Huddleston; mother-in-law, Renae Timm; step children, Michael Anderson, Kari Sulze, and Miranda Sulze; the light of his life continues to shine through his grandkids, Zoey, Sawyer, and Devyn; sisters, Lana Gail Doring, of Texas; sisters-in-law, Jaci (Marc) Pfau of Newfolden, MN, and Wendy (Aaron) Goff of Warren, MN; brothers-in-law, Brian Timm and Shane Timm of Newfolden, MN; uncle, Edwin Hays of Simmi Valley, California; and aunt, Cindy (Barry) Penzel of Minden, NV; and several nieces and nephews

Angelica Marie Hoopingarner-Hale - November 30, 1998 - March 13, 2024

Obituary Preview: Angelica Marie Hoopingarner-Hale, 25, of International Falls, MN passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2024 with her loving family by her side.

Angelica was born in International Falls on November 30, 1998 to Marilyn Hoopingarner-Hale and Farrell Kingbird. She grew up in Ranier, MN. She attended Head Start at Kootasca, 1st-4th grade at Falls Elementary School, and completed her education by homeschooling; educating through Kahn Academy, then graduating from New Earth Academy. She was very smart, especially in math, where she placed in the top 25% on World Math Day. She studied language arts, was a zealous researcher of many different subjects, and loved to read all types of books.

Angelica was constantly learning new things, including Japanese language, writing, and medical research. She loved manga, educational books, and fiction. Angelica was a collector of art supplies, cool pens, notebooks, and agates. She was exceptionally kind, and was always open to talking with new people. Angelica loved the food network, and made some of the best chocolate chip cookies. She dreamed of taking on cooking, embracing her Native American heritage, raising pigeons, and training a new service dog when she got out of the hospital. She was passionate about animals; continuously educating herself and others about them. She planned to own a pet sanctuary in her old age.

Angelica is survived by her mother Marilyn (Joseph) Napper; father Farrell Kingbird; sisters: Sierra (Robert) Sjerven and Nina May Kingbird; grandparents: Dianna Hoopingarner, Marlene Spears, Jack Kingbird Jr., and Kathy (Jim Lavalla) Napper; great-grandparents Paul and Carol Hoopingarner. As well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brother Damyan Napper; uncle Ronald J. Kingbird; grandparents: George Hale, George Folta, Debra Gowell, and Blake and Gladys Napper; great-grandparents Mary and Johnny Morrison; and beloved service dog Duke.

A Prayer Service, Celebration of Life and open house with a light meal will be held at the Thunderbird Lodge, International Falls, on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Deanna Lee Rasmussen - September 05, 1946 - March 11, 2024

Obituary Preview: Deanna Lee Rasmussen, 77, of International Falls, Minnesota passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11,2024 with family by her side after a brief battle with cancer.

Deanna was born September 5, 1946, in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Gretchen (Nicholson) Selberg. Deanna was the oldest of four siblings. She attended school in International Falls and Littlefork for a short time period before transferring to Indus where she graduated from in 1964. It was during her time at Indus that she met a tall, handsome young man named, Gary Rasmussen. After a two-year courtship, they united in marriage on September 24, 1966, at the South Falls Fire Hall and Community Center. After a brief start in Chisholm, Minnesota, the couple moved to the Pelland Junction area where they planted their roots. They became pillars of the community there for over 50 years. They raised two children and one grandson while operating a family business known as Rasmussen Logging.

Deanna held many jobs throughout the years that gave her pleasure such as a server at Hardees, a CNA, and as a Para at the Indus School. Deanna enjoyed helping out and interacting with the public. Always rendering a nurturing hand when needed. Along with those jobs, she was active with the family business attending to multiple tasks. Most importantly, packing lunches and keeping the cookie jar full! She was well known for her baking and cooking. Nobody left Deanna's house hungry. There was never a time she didn't have fresh baked goodies or a meal or two prepared. She loved trying new recipes and every person walking through the door would be a taste tester of them. Her kitchen was the gathering place for all to share a story and more. Whomever entered was always made to feel welcome.

Deanna loved living life and cherished all the memories she made along the way. Her family was her spirit, lifeline, and inspiration. No matter what title she held, be it daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma or friend, she will be greatly missed by all.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Gretchen and Pete Morgan, father, Robert Selberg; mother and father-in-law, Everett and Blanche Rasmussen; sisters-in-law, Linda Dobbs, Diane Rasmussen, brothers-in-law, Gene, Jerry and Terry Rasmussen.

James was born February 11, 1947, in Pine River, Minnesota to William and Mabel (Jones) Peterson. After graduating high-school he served in the US army from 1965-1967. James married his high school sweetheart Debbie Burnell August 21, 1971, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in International Falls, MN.

James worked for Boise Cascade for 47 years before his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching hockey, playing with his grandkids, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering for many community events and always up for a game of cards.

James was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mabel; and father and mother-in-law, Ross and Ruby Burnell.

James is survived by his wife, Debbie (Burnell) Peterson; son, Jim (Sarah) Peterson; daughter, Jami (Joseph) Powell; grandchildren, Camden Powell, Bauer Powell, Daphne Peterson, Sloane Peterson, and Mack Peterson; brother, Robert Peterson; Sisters In-Law Darlene Walls and Tami (Elroy) Jesme: Brothers In-law- Don Burnell, Mick Burnell, Jay (Denise) Burnell and his special dog, Kevin.

Petr was united in marriage to the former Galina Bondar.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, boating, cooking and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vladimir Klimenchuk.

Survivors include his wife, Galina Klimenchuk; son, Oleg; daughters, Inna, Svetlana and Alina. Also survived by his mother, Maria Klimenchuk; five grandchildren; one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 6:00 pm at the Evangelical Covenant Church, Int’l Falls. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10:00 am at Littlefork Lutheran Church.

Interment will be held at Oakley Cemetery, Littlefork, MN.

Obituary Preview: Ariel Angel Arch, 33, passed away March 1, 2024, following a brief illness.

Ariel was born February 3, 1991, in International Falls, Minnesota to Sarah and Howard Arch.

Ariel grew up in International Falls. She attended St. Thomas School, graduating there after eighth grade. She then attended Falls High School, graduating with the class of 2009. She was proud to be a Bronco and participated in basketball, cross country, and track and field. She always loved running.

Following high school, Ariel moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where she attended the University of North Dakota and graduated from there with her bachelor’s degree.

After University, Ariel moved to Colorado and eventually back to Minnesota where she lived and worked for Cargill Inc.

Ariel had many interests and loves. She loved to travel- visiting many countries and states during her short time on this Earth. She loved sports, fashion, spending time at the lake, swimming, kayaking, and fishing. Her family nickname was “Muskie Arch”. She loved event planning and with her there were never enough sparkles. More than anything, Ariel loved spending time with her dog, Stella, her friends, especially Erica, Alyssa, Emily, and her family.

No matter where her path would take her, MN was always home. When visiting the Falls, the first things to be done were always to go fishing and order Border Bar Pizza. Ariel was our lake maid, our dragonfly savior, our “go for it” girl, and our fishing beauty. She was known for her beautiful smile that could light up any room. She knew how to make people feel special and brought a sense of excitement.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl and Lorraine Kantor; great-grandparents, Katherine and Alec Zub, Mary and Bill Arch, and Emma and Joseph Kantor; and uncles, Jerry and Jeff Kantor.

Ariel is survived by her parents, Sarah and Howard Arch; sister, Autumn (Andrew); brother, Forrest; grandparents, Sonja and Larry Arch; aunts and uncles, Natalie and David Frank, Diane Bradley-Kantor, Joe Kantor, Connie Arch, Rob and Kristina Arch, and Brian Arch; numerous cousins, Brian, Alex, Travis, Bradley, Wolfgang, Sophia, Thor, Solomon, Christina, Jerry, Joella, Kevin, Alec, Olivia, Wyatt, Gracyn, Will, and Maddie; and many other people who cared about her.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in International Falls on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Following mass, there will be a luncheon at the church for friends and family. The Arch family invites friends and family to their cabin in Canada in the evening to hold a candlelight ceremony for Ariel.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Arch family to help with a memorial statue being built for Ariel.

Obituary Preview: Elaine “Doll” Carol (Olson) Schwartz, 87, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Elaine was born June 7, 1936, In Roseau, MN to Odin Olson and Ida (Kihlstadius) Olson-Lundeen.

On August 1, 1959, Elaine married the love of her life, Jerome (Jack) Schwartz. They went on to have four beautiful children, Delroy, Jodie, Jerry, and Paul.

To know Ealine is that she dearly loved her family more than anything and she had great family values. Elaine was a very loving and generous person who always put others first.

Elaine was a great cook. Her family always looked forward to her wonderful home cooked meals, especially on the holidays. The family nicknamed her the “Lefse Queen.” Lefse making on the holidays was her specialty. She made sure everybody had lefse for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She even had outside orders throughout the years. She would save her lefse money and go to the casino with her friends.

Elaine enjoyed the casino, gardening, quilting, playing cards, making lefse, deer hunting, fishing, and picking blueberries. She had the most beautiful flower beds and vegetable garden which she took a lot of pride in. Elaine’s favorite pastime was playing cards with the “Crazy Card Ladies”, girlfriends; Donna Hayes, Idella Franz, Betty Nemec, and Dixie Pullar (deceased 2022).

Elaine is survived by her daughter, Jodie (Cam) Hardwig; son, Paul (Angie) Schwartz; grandchildren, JoJean (Andy) Kittelson, Jeena (John) Schmit, Alex (Charity) Schwartz, Anah (David) Eddy, Megan Schwartz, and Jerrad Holenko; great-grandchildren, Jenaya Kittelson, Jayden Ginter, Jacksi Ginter, Sawyer Schmit, Skyler Schmit, Ella Schwartz, Aleah Schwartz, Lucy Holenko, and Aubrey Holenko; beloved nieces and nephews whom she dearly treasured, Lorne (Sheila), Brad (Marci), Danny (Deb), Nadine, Lori, and Brian; and sister-in-law, Marlys Olson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerome (Jack) Schwartz; sons, Delroy and Jerry Schwartz; great-grandson, Julian Kittelson; sister-in-law, Leona Otto; and brother, Leland Olson.

Lori was born July 25, 1964, to Lyle and Marion (Engelmann) Wicken in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The family moved to Minot, North Dakota for a few years before moving back to Grand Forks, where Lori graduated from Red River High School in 1982. Lori had two children when she married William Awe in International Falls at First Lutheran Church on October 2, 1999, and moved to International Falls, where both kids graduated from high school. Lori and Will lived in town for over 20 years before moving to their home on Rainy Lake.

Lori did a number of jobs before moving to International Falls but liked working in the library at West Fargo High School the best. In International Falls Lori worked for the high school as a substitute secretary before getting employed by United Health Care, which is now Optum Health Group. She was one of the first to work from home and enjoyed that aspect.

Lori's favorite things to do were spending time with family and friends, whether it was at home or away. Lori also enjoyed boat rides and enjoyed time spent with family and friends on the pontoon and loved watching the UND Sioux play hockey. Lori was a hockey mom in addition to attending her children’s concerts and games. Lori made many of her grandchildren's events, including concerts and games, and was actively involved in their lives. Lori also enjoyed watching the grandchildren grow up and their events. She loved watching them whether it was in person or on the computer or casting to the TV. She attended many softball, baseball and hockey games in person and also went to dance competitions and recitals. To her grandchildren, she was just called “Grandma”.

Lori was preceded in death by her grandparents, Arnt and Margaret (Amble) Wicken and William and Mary (Markel) Engelmann; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Kathy (Scearcy) Awe; brother-in-law, Kenneth Awe; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Lori is survived by husband, William, of International Falls; daughter, Paige (Matt) Boorman, of Proctor, Minnesota; son, Anthony (Emilie) Zubriski, of Carpio, North Dakota; grandchildren, Ethan and Lily Boorman, of Proctor, her parents; Lyle and Marion Wicken of Grand Forks; brother, Greg (Tracy) Wicken of Grand Forks; nephews, Grant (Sarah) Wicken of Bismarck, North Dakota, Tyler (BreAnna) Wicken, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Devin Awe, of St. Paul. She is also survived by numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in International Falls. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Green-Larsen Mortuary and one hour prior to the service at First Lutheran Church.

He attended grade school in International Falls and graduated from Northome School in 1977. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman on board the USS Jack nuclear submarine and honorably discharged on January 29, 1984. He retired from PCA serving most of his employment as a heavy equipment operator.

Danny married Dorothy Ann Swenson on September 29, 1986. Danny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As a husband, he was steadfast through thick and thin. As a father, he inspired his children with his wisdom and patience. As a grandfather, he admired his grandchildren as his legacy to life.

His friends enjoyed his company and hearing the jokes he loved telling. He was passionate about hunting and fishing. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, and playing cribbage. His strong faith, encouraging hope, and his unconditional love touched people’s lives and made the world a better place.

Danny was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Ann Battalion.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Battalion, International Falls; sons, Dusty (Kristen Combs) Battalion, of Cloquet, MN and Brandon Battalion, of Minong, WI; daughter, Nicole (Steve) James, of Boise, ID; and two grandchildren, Khloe Battalion and Shane Rogers.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Helen; his grandparents, his brothers: Michael “Mick” and John “Butch” Kuryla along with his niece, Lisa Kuryla and great nephews, Cody Kuryla and Paul Kuryla.

Jerry is survived by his brothers, Jim Kuryla, Thomas Kuryla (Peggy), and Paul Kuryla; sisters, Chris Polus (Joe) and Margaret Holmestad (Wayne); sisters-in-law, Iverne Kuryla and Linda Batcher Kuryla. Jerry’s extended family includes special nieces, Missy Walls, Heather Kuryla, Tammy Tessier, Lynde Mettler, Kailey Rucinski and Mindy O’Brien; special nephews, Chad Kuryla, Cory Kuryla, Damon Polus, and Cody Holmestad; and many special great-nieces and nephews and a huge amount of loving friends!

Jerry worked in the service, hospitality, and restaurant business for most of his life. He enjoyed planning events, cooking the food, and preparing for all the joy he could bring to others. Jerry was a very generous, kind, and caring man. He sent a greeting card to so many over the years, sometimes for no special reason, except to let them know he was thinking of them.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquanis Catholic Church in International Falls.

She spent every Tuesday at bingo with her best friend, Berta Forsythe. Her downtime was spent making quilts for the people she loved.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, James and Anne Emlaw.

She is survived by her children, Chad (Natalie) Graves and Jamie Graves; grandchildren, Zachary Brendan, Trevor, Evan, Hannah, Kaili, and Ryan; sister, Peggy Kodet; nephews, Wade (Cathy) Hagevold and Tyler Kodet; niece, Dana (Brandon) Devorak; and ex-husband, Michael Graves.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Green-Larsen Mortuary in International Falls. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

Obituary Preview: David Lee Parmeter, 92, died February 19, 2024. He was born May 31, 1931, in Littlefork, MN to Dean and Hulda (Jonson).

Dave served many roles and served them well: he was a son, a big brother, a husband, father, grandfather, uncle. He was a US soldier, a musician and coach/mentor of other musicians, a teacher and a junior high and high school principal, and a good friend. He loved Rainy Lake, fishing for large-mouth bass on little lily pond lakes, and watching a good ballgame on TV. He was a private pilot and enjoyed recreational flight whenever he was able. He was an all-around good person who gave everyone a fair chance and an opportunity to be the best they could be. Dave was ever the optimist and his positive outlook will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Connie (Gustafson), sons John and Jay, sisters Shirley Stene (Alvin) and Kay Svoboda (Joe), daughter-in-law Kathy Gaines. He is survived by brother Don, sons Scott, Brian, and daughter Jill Christie (Terry), daughter-in-law Cathy Carlson, grand daughters Hatie Parmeter (Kevin), Zoe Parmeter (Alec), Sammy Christie, grandson Stephen Christie, special friend Phyllis Kuluvar, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family thanks the wonderful staff of Rainy Lake Medical Center and the Ranier Roost for all their support in Dad's recent past.

A celebration of life is being planned for the summer.

Eugene Charles Skoglund - October 02, 1933 - February 19, 2024

Obituary Preview: Eugene “Gene” Skoglund, 90, of International Falls, Minnesota, passed away from Cardiopulmonary Disease at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN on Monday, February 19, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born on October 2, 1933, to Waldemar and Signe (Freden) Skoglund in Ericsburg, MN. He was the third child of four.

Gene married Marlene Ruelle, the love of his life, on May 12, 1956, and they were blessed with two daughters, Lori and Tammi. Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Gene was drafted into the U.S. Navy and proudly served from 1955 to 1957. He was assigned to the USS Hillsborough County LST. His ship participated in Operation Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line in the Arctic Ocean. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1957.

He was employed by Boise Cascade Corporation as a Papermaker and Coater Machine Operator for 21 years and then as a Millwright for 15 years. He retired in 1994. Gene was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gene and Marlene enjoyed wintering in Weslaco, TX at Ranchero Village for 15 years. They had many good times with friends there. Gene also enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Waldemar and Signe Skoglund; infant brother, Roy, and brothers Walter and Lanny.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marlene; his daughters, Lori (Skoglund) Walz; Tammi Bernard and husband Bill Eakins; his grandchildren, Jessica Walz and fiancé, Ryan Galliford; Jonathan Walz and wife, Emily; Justin Bernard and wife Kelsey Ward; Katie and husband Bryce Winblad; and his great grandchildren, Lillian Walz, Penelope and Eleanor Bernard, and Clara Winblad. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Judy Skoglund, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, March 11th at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. A visitation will be held at the church at 10 a.m. and a Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Following the Mass, a luncheon will be held at Aquinas Hall. Interment with military funeral honors and the committal service will be at the Ericsburg Cemetery following the luncheon.

Douglas Harry Wickstrom - May 18, 1942 - February 10, 2024

Obituary Preview: Douglas Harry Wickstrom, 81, of International Falls, Minnesota, passed away peacefully February 10th, 2024, at Rainy Lake Medical Center after a battle with dementia, with his loving children, Wendy and Jeff, by his side.

Douglas was born in Fort Frances, Ont. on May 18th, 1942, to Allan and Joy (Lecuyer) Wickstrom.

He grew up in Fort Frances and attended school there through the 9th grade. He quit school after 9th grade to go to work to help provide for the family.

Douglas started working hauling pulpwood across the ice roads and various other jobs. On September 2, 1962, Douglas married the former Bonnie Underdahl. He began working at Insulite in 1964 as a millwright, working there until its closure in 1984. During this time, he also served as Fire Chief of South International Falls. After closure of the Insulite, Douglas set out to fulfill his dream of owning an auto salvage yard. Doug, along with his son, Jeff, created J & D Auto Salvage in 1985. Along with owning the salvage yard, they also ran a wrecker and towing business, which kept them very busy. This also provided Doug the chance to build a stock car and start a race team, which continued to race on and off until 2020. The salvage yard was sold in 2002, but that did not slow Doug down at all. He then helped his son work on his rental homes and properties, mowed lawns, snow plowed for the rentals and local businesses. He also did various work with his beloved backhoe.

In his spare time, Doug enjoyed fishing up at Lake Despair. He also enjoyed hunting, deer season being his favorite. Doug loved tinkering in his garage, teaching his grandson TJ, the ins and outs a mechanic needs to know. He was always on the hunt for treasures at auctions or garage sales. He and his daughter Wendy spent many hours riding around looking for treasures. Before every ride he would remind Wendy that she needed to stop and get him a Coke and a treat of some sort. If there was something on the side of the road, he was sure to stop and check it out. He also enjoyed having morning coffee at various local restaurants.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Joy (Lecuyer) Wickstrom, brother Wayne Wickstrom, and sister Marion Tuis.

He is survived by his children Wendy Wickstrom Ginter and Jeff Wickstrom (Amanda Hertzel), both of International Falls; grandchildren, Tara (Adam) Harris, Noah Ginter, Brooke (Nick) Maki, Rebecca Armit, TJ (Regan) Wickstrom; former wife Bonnie (Underdahl) Wickstrom and brother Roger (Christine) Wickstrom, of Emo, Ontario. He is also survived by great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In true Douglas fashion, always lending a hand and helping others, he chose to bequeath his body to the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota. By doing this, he will continue to help others by supporting medical education and research.
