Walter "Curt" Wilson - May 27, 1959 - October 10, 2020

Departed: 10/10/2020 (Baker City)
Obituary Preview: W. Curtis Wilson left our world on October 10, 2020.  He was born into our world on May 27, 1959, at the old Saint Elizabeth Hospital on Fourth Street.  He was the first son of Walter and Glenda Wilson, and the first grandchild of G. Franklin Yeager.  His parents divorced in 1970, and six years later, he acquired a new father figure, his stepdad Mike Purvine.  Curt grew to love this man, “With All My Heart,” as he always put it.
He liked all things growing up, but one place was special, his grandpa Bo’s and Grandma Ila’s ranch at Sparta.  Curt lived and worked all his life in Baker County.  He attended North Baker, Helen M. Stack, and Baker High School, graduating in 1977.  At the age of 10, he joined the 4-H Equestrian group called The Silver Spurs.  He loved his big black mare Velvet, showing her in 4-H and riding in the parades.  He liked all sports and played little league baseball and Babe Ruth, making the all-star teams most years.  Later in life, he was a member of slow pitch softball. He served with the Oregon National Guards, Baker Armory. Curt was at home in the outdoors, hunting elk in the Elkhorn Mountains where there is a hunting area name for him “Curt’s Saddle,” deer in the Sparta area, and fishing and camping in all three Eagle Creek’s area.
Although he was not a tall man, in no way was he a small man. He had a heart of gold and would do anything to help someone in need.
He met and married a sweet girl named Tammy  Profitt in 1979. In the spring of 1980, his first child was born; Michael Curtis Wilson, Curt, and Tammy later divorced, and on August 3, 1985, he married the love of his life,  Caroline Mae Scott.  in 1994, they welcomed their daughter Ashley Mae Wilson into this world. With that, his family was complete.
We all believe and know Curt is in a better place, but our hearts and so sad now.  We will think of him with a smile on our faces and love in our hearts in future years.
Curtis is survived by his wife Caroline, his son Michael(Kelly) and his daughter Ashley(Shane), His parents, Mike and Glenda, grandchildren, Erin(Mike) Meadows of Fallon, Nevada, Jillian and Caden Wilson of Caldwell, Idaho, and great-grandson, Dillon Michael Wilson of Caldwell, Idaho, his brother Dennis Wilson of Boise, Idaho, his mother-in-law Norma Scott of Baker City, Oregon and by many aunts and uncles, lots of cousins and a niece and two nephews.  Curtis had too many friends to name them all.
Curtis is preceded in death by his father, Walter L. Wilson, his grandparents Frank and Clara Yeager, Bo and Ila Wilson, and his father-in-law George Scott, several aunts, and uncles.
Curt’s ashes will be spread by his son, Michael, at a place or place of his choosing. There will be a celebration of Curt’s life on Saturday the 17th at 1:00 P.M. on Ben Dier Road at the front of the Elkhorn Mountains.  Signs will be posted for the exact location.  A potluck will be served with Tri/tip meat provided.  We hope to see you there to share memories of Curt.
When we come to the end of the day, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.  Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not for long and not with your head bowed low, remember the times we once shared, Miss me but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone. It’s all a part of the maker’s plan, A step on the road to HOME. When you are lonely and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know, & Bury your sorrows In doing good deeds, Miss me, but let me go.

David Lennox Blatchford - April 04, 1945 - September 04, 2020

Departed: 09/04/2020 (Baker City)
Obituary Preview: David Lennox Blatchford of Baker City, Oregon passed away September 4, 2020, in his Wingville home with family by his side. He was a potato and wheat farmer for nearly 50 years and was able to enjoy seeing the wheat harvested this year.  He and his son Jess have been partners for ten years and prior, for 40 years, Dave was partners with his younger brother, Jim Blatchford.
Born in Portland on April 4, 1945, to Lennox and Ruth Blatchford. Dave grew up in Gresham and Hillsboro where he excelled in 4-H and FFA as the three Blatchford boys were involved daily with the family Jersey Dairy farm.  Dave especially was involved with machinery, expertly driving the small Oliver Cletrac at age of 7. One year at the State Fair, Dave and older brother Bill won first place in 8 out of 9 classes for Jerseys.
Dave’s athletic ability was noticed in his sixth grade by Hillsboro High Coach Ad Rutschman and he was on the Hillsboro Baseball team to win State Champs in 1963, named all-conference catcher, and won an athletic scholarship to Pacific University where he was named all-conference catcher all four years under Coach Chuck Bafaro and was selected in 1967 as Pacific's first NAIA All-American baseball player, named as the second team catcher, also holding the record for runs scored per game that year.  He also enjoyed many hours of water skiing on the Willamette River and was an excellent snow skier. Later on, his hobbies adjusted to pleasure boating in places such as the Snake River, Owyhee Reservoir, and the San Juan Islands of Washington with Brother Bill; and snowmobiling, which included many trips to deep powder areas of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana with Jess and lots of other friends. Always a competitor at heart, Dave entered several snowmobile races up at Anthony Lakes including the hillclimb, drags, and a radar run in which he and Jess ended up tying for first place at 80 mph in 300 ft. Dave and brother Jim came to Baker to farm as they felt the Willamette Valley had a shortage of good farmland.  They started small and on a shoestring.  They were early to adopt deep well irrigation and the first to bring center pivots to Baker Valley. Dave was innovative, if it could be beneficial to the farm, he would buy it, or build it himself. He was a great fabricator and designer; he could look at a picture and sit down and engineer what to build and often how to make it better.  Starting out from necessity, building farm equipment, grain elevators, and semi-trailers, turned into an enjoyable part of his shop time, designing, and building anything he could put his "Lennox Trailers/ Lennox Equipment" name on.  But more often than not, if there was a possibility that any fieldwork needed done, you could find him on a tractor.  The hardest time of year for him was the month before harvest when there wasn't any fieldwork to be done!
After moving to Baker, he met Jennifer at the Stirrup Room and they were married on March 10, 1973. They built a wonderful life together, adopting Jess at birth on April 25, 1978. Dave and Jennifer purchased what they affectionately call “the small farm” in 1985 and the three of them moved into the house on the property. He was fortunate enough to live on his farm, with his family, for the rest of his life.
Dave is survived by his wife of 47 years Jennifer (Jenner) Smith of Baker City.  Their son Jess is married to Chelsea (Brown) of Baker City and Dave’s two precious grandsons, Sawyer and Carter.  He was blessed with a Bonus family, Alejandro Duran (Victoria), and his bonus grandsons Alex, Mariano, Calvin, and Danny.  He is also survived by his older brother, Bill (Carolyn) of Bend and his younger brother, Jim (Kathy) as well as 7 nieces and nephews.  Dave was also survived by many friends, including lifetime friend Tom Mickelberry of Portland.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Haines and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020, at 2:00 PM at the Blatchford Shop on Pole Line Ln.

Janice Marlene Smull - June 21, 1938 - August 25, 2020

Departed: 08/25/2020 (Baker City)
Obituary Preview: Janice Marlene (Edwards) Smull, 82, of Baker City, died peacefully at home, Aug. 25, 2020.
There will be a viewing Friday, Aug. 28, at Gray’s West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Her graveside service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. There will be an outdoor celebration of life to follow at 3 p.m. at the home of Danna and Floyd Morgan, 36996 Highway 245 (Unity and Sumpter Junction).
Janice was born on June 21, 1938, to John Leonard and Zena Beryl (Lewis) Edwards in Baker City.  She was the first child born, 2 years before her brother, Gene Dennis “Denny” Edwards.
She attended Baker City schools and was very active in high school clubs: National Honor Society, vice president, Girls League, Nugget, Pep Club, Drill Team, Tri-Hi-Y, Choir Namater, Quill and Scroll, Makeup Crew, Banquet Co-Chairman, and Sports Princess. This is where she met her future husband, George Smull.  They were married on Nov. 9, 1956, for 26 years.
After graduation, Janice went to Radiation Technician school in Portland, Oregon. But school soon had to be put on hold as she and George were blessed with five children, Danna, Celeste, Dale, Christopher “Cas” and Molly.  Janice enjoyed working as a swimming teacher and lifeguard during her children’s early years.
After Molly’s second birthday, Janice went back to school in Caldwell, Idaho, and received her Radiation Technician Certification in 1970.  She went to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital and retired, May 10, 2000, with 39 years of service.  She was also honored with a room dedicated to her for over 35 years of serving Baker City residents.
She spent time in retirement caring for her mother, Zena, visiting her three times a day.  She enjoyed playing bridge with her mother and their friends at the Golf Course and the homes of bridge club members. She won the Millie Heizer award in 2017 and in 2018 she began teaching people how to play bridge. She played three weeks ago, earning high score with her partner, Danae Simonski, at Duplicate Bridge.
She enjoyed recording family history and events through photography.  She loved to travel when she could and being involved in Baker City events and organizing class reunions. It was at one of the class reunions that she re-connected with a former classmate, Bill Moragne.  Bill and Janice enjoyed spending time together from that point on.
Janice had many special friends and valued their friendships immensely.  She had a big heart and was always ready to lend a hand. At Thanksgiving, the family would often find an extra place at the holiday table for those at work who didn’t have a place to go.
She leaves her family (five generations) remembering her gentle spirit, generosity, and big hugs.
Survivors include her brother, Denny (Gerry) Edwards of Hermiston; daughter, Danna (Floyd) Morgan of Baker City, daughter, Celeste (Vance) Bennett of Nevada, son, Dale Smull of Durkee, daughter, Molly Smull of Baker City, daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Dan) Axness of Boise; seven grandchildren, Corey Smith of Baker City, Beamus, Cooper and Duncan Bennett of Nevada, Jared (Amanda) Smull of Durkee, Jillona (Danny) Frangipani of Scappoose, and Raina Smull of Portland; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Zena Edwards; mother-in-law, Daisy; her former husband, George; her daughter-in-law, Sharry Smull; and her son, Christopher, and his son, her grandson, Lance.
