Sharon Ann Taylor - September 17, 1943 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Chesapeake)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Ann Taylor surrendered on her own terms to her battle with cancer on April 13, 2024. She was a woman of faith who prioritized service to others, the church, and her family. She was a devoted mom to three, a doting grandmother to four grandchildren, and a contributing church member and a humble servant to others. Her accomplishments reflect her genuine character, qualities of integrity, accountability, resilience, determination, independence, and courage.
Sharon’s eye for detail, mind for realistic and logistical planning, tenacious discipline and her above and beyond work ethic proved to be the catalyst for her successes in both her personal and professional life. She courageously faced her challenges with a coordinated plan of attack that made her a force to be reckoned with and a respected voice of reason. She left no details to chance, even in the last month as she carefully planned her own funeral. She cared deeply about others and set her own difficulties aside to make sure they had what they needed. She faithfully counted money for the church and visited the shut-ins typically without anyone knowing that she was still receiving chemo treatments through a portable pump stashed away in a pouch at her side. As a mother, she was fiercely devoted to sacrificing time and finances to ensure her children’s educational and extracurricular sport opportunities were supported and prioritized. She lent the same dedication when it came to caring for her aging parents, giving of her time in service at Woodland Heights Baptist church, or to her many life-long friendships formed in Sunday School. Her generous spirit and fierce determination inspired all who knew her.
Although Sharon may no longer walk among us, she will continue to illuminate our lives with beautiful memories and profound lessons. May she rest in peace knowing she made a meaningful difference in the lives of so many while honoring her heavenly Father as a good and faithful servant.
Sharon is survived by her three children; Tony Taylor, Karen Shumaker, and Tammy Asbury as well as her three brothers; Warren, Creed, and Ricky Fallin, her four grandchildren; Jonathan Pulley, Travis Shumaker, Eli and Luke Asbury. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elbridge and Irene Fallin.
Her viewing, funeral service, and reception provide an opportunity for those who knew and loved her to come together, share stories, and honor her life in a meaningful way. In the midst of grief, may there be moments of joy as Sharon’s life is celebrated and her spirit remembered. A visitation will be held on April 27, 2024, beginning at 1pm at Woodland Heights Baptist Church with the funeral service to immediately follow at 2pm. A reception will complete the celebration of life with light refreshments and desserts in the fellowship hall at 3pm. Arrangements are in the care of Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Chesapeake. Please visit grahamfuneralhome.com to leave a condolence to the family. Colossians 3:12-17, 23-24

Robert Allan Roth - August 15, 1945 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Chesapeake)
Obituary Preview: Pastor Robert Allan Roth, 78 passed away April 8, 2024. Robert, or more affectionately known simple as Bob, was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Ray Roth and Ruth Glassey Ullum. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as an engineer after 36 years. After retirement he continued to work for contractors, Amesac and ICI for another 7 years and retired with a total 41 years.
Bob was a member of New Life Church - Kempsville Campus. He was the catalyst that brought the Chesapeake Program CAST, that housed the homeless during the winter months, to New Life Church for 4 years. He also served CAST in many ways to help the program in its mission.
Bob also served in other ministries that focused on being a blessing to those in need. He was a man of many talents and had an amazing heart for others. Some of the many was he served the Kingdom included: receiving a calling from God where he volunteered with PIN Ministry for 7 years. He birthed his next calling, Homeland Disciples as a ministry to the homeless. Bob was a dedicated servant in his ministry, totally hands on as he ministered to those in need. He developed alongside with Dr. Beach of Coastal Vision, weekly Eye Clinic as well as monthly and quarterly Eye Event Programs serving the less fortunate. Bob was on the streets serving and ended up at the parking lot of a local Walmart. He purchased an RV and set up weekly bible studies where he served hot meals and sat and shared the Word of God with anyone who wanted to participate. Monthly, Bob would pick up food products in his trailer and set-up a mini grocery store at a local church in South Norfolk, allowing those in need come shopping and shared God’s Love in word and deed. It is apparent that Bob’s was a life well lived, serving God, those less fortunate and his family and friends. He was not a man of pretense, had no need for recognition, but quietly went about doing good. He will be sorely missed, but his work will live on in the lives of all those he touched.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on how to write one.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, around 150-200 words. However, some publications may allow for longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where can I publish an obituary?

Obituaries can be published in local newspapers, online obituary platforms, funeral home websites, social media, and other community outlets. You can also create a memorial website or blog to share the obituary and memories of your loved one.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider asking a friend or family member for help. You can also reach out to a professional writer or seek guidance from a funeral home or bereavement counselor.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of your loved one.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private online memorial or share it only with close friends and family through email or social media.
