Obituary Preview: Mark Donald Blair, age 62, of Paton, died March 21st, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie. Burial will follow at Lost Grove Township Cemetery in Harcourt. A visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2024 where family will visit with friends at Zion Lutheran Church, Gowrie. Palmer Funeral Home of Gowrie is handling the arrangements. Mark was born on May 21, 1961, at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, IA. The first son of Wayne Donald and Donna Rose (Haeberlein) Blair. Mark was baptized and confirmed at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in Grand Junction. He was raised helping take care of the farm west of Paton with 2 brothers, John & James. He attended Paton-Churdan School, graduating with the class of 1979.Mark was a dedicated farmer whose passion for the land nourished both crops and souls. He loved farming and helped his dad, numerous farmers and family once he was old enough to run the equipment, hold a scoop shovel or pick up a bale of hay. He also loved to hunt and ran a trap line for many years and his love of hunting made him the best shot around. His unwavering commitment to agriculture enriched the community and left a lasting mark on the earth. He will be fondly remembered for his tireless work ethic, gentle spirit and deep-rooted love for his family and the land.On April 9, 1983, Mark married Heidi Miller Blair at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie, IA. To this union 2 daughters were born, Ashley and Michelle.Mark is survived by his wife Heidi of 41 years, daughters Ashley (Jeff) Allen of Fort Dodge and Michelle (Tanner Sporleder) Blair of Altoona, three grandchildren Abby, Mack, and Doss Allen, brothers John Blair of Paton and James (Suzanne) Blair of Ellston, his father-in-law Dale Miller, sister-in-law Holly (Tom) Shook, Marble Rock, and brothers-in-law Steve (Linda Aaker) Miller Humboldt, SD, Scott (Jan) Miller, Paton, Shannon (Beth) Miller and Stacy (Jill) Miller Harcourt. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews, 11 great-nieces and nephews, and many relatives and friends.Preceding him in death were his parents Don and Donna Blair, and mother-in-law Patricia Miller and nephew Tye Miller.Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Services will be at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is handling arrangements. Russell was born in Gowrie, IA on April 1, 1927, the oldest son of Albin and Hannah Norine. He attended Gowrie schools and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mr. Norine was a veteran of WWII. He was married to Ruth E. (Perry) on October 16, 1949 and together they raised three daughters. While farming he also worked at several jobs in the community eventually establishing Norine Insurance and Accounting in Gowrie. Russell was an active lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie and a member of the American Legion and Kiwanis International. He also served several terms on the Webster County Conservation Board and was a member of the morning and afternoon coffee groups in Gowrie. His greatest love was his family. Russell and Ruth enjoyed cruises and attending athletic events and music concerts with their daughters and grandchildren in Iowa, California, Minnesota, and Texas. He also enjoyed woodworking, the Gowrie 4th of July and family reunions. He graduated from Gowrie High School in 1957. He then attended Buena Vista College where he received a degree in Biology.In 1960, he married Gayen Jensen. They went on to have 5 children, Don Jr., Katrina, Todd, Tony, and Michelle.He was Superintendent of Gowrie Municipal Utilities. Don was meticulous and committed to the job and loved what he did for a living. He also was a volunteer fireman in Gowrie. Don retired in 2000.He moved to Hackensack, MN after retirement and enjoyed his lake home.While retired, Don had time to pursue his love of fishing, hunting, collecting Marlin rifles and also coins. He also had a love for his Labrador dogs.Don was predeceased by Katrina Borgen, Helen Borgen, and Dr. D. L. Carol continued working for the Gowrie Care Center and at the elementary school as well as delivering the Consumer News and filling in whenever she was needed cooking congregate meals. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens and had quite the green thumb. She took what she grew to neighbors and into the community center so anyone who would like could share in the fruits of her labors.Memorials may be left to family discretion.

R. and Ruth Roche, was born May 22, 1934, in Lake City, Iowa. The oldest of four siblings, Sally was raised in Gowrie, Iowa, graduating from Gowrie High School in 1952. An avid sports fan, she was proud to have played six-on-six basketball throughout her high school years and to have kept the scorebook for her dad’s Legion baseball teams. Sally earned her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) and taught at Humboldt and Callender. Her father, a proud WWI veteran, enrolled her as a member of the junior auxiliary on the day she was born, and Sally was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Peterson Post #431.In 1956, Sally was united in marriage to John Morton at the Methodist Church in Vincent, Iowa. The couple first lived in Colorado, where John was stationed in the U.S. Army, then returned to Gowrie to live and raise their children, Rochelle and Scott. Once her children were in school, Sally taught reading at Prairie Community Junior High School and adult education classes in knitting. For nearly two decades, Sally supported John’s business, Morton Farm Service. Sally and John were very active in the Gowrie Methodist Church, Gideons International and the greater Gowrie community until John’s death in 1974.In 1977, Sally married Don Hildreth, and the couple farmed near Jefferson until Don passed away in 1980.In 1985, Sally returned to college, earning a degree from Iowa State University’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Following graduation, she worked in the insurance industry. In 1989, Sally moved to Tucson, Arizona, where she taught pre-school for several years. Sally married Dean Amandus in 1999, shortly before his death.Sally moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, in 2007 to live near her son Scott and his family and then moved with them to Jefferson, Iowa, in 2019. Fred was born October 2, 1926, in Dexter, Iowa, son of Frederick John and Nannie Tillie (Schafer) Fillman. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, Iowa. In 1940, he moved with his parents to a farm in Paton, Iowa. He was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in 1941. During his junior year in high school, Fred was enamored by a young lady in the same grade, Shirley Jean Powell. Fred and Shirley graduated from Paton Consolidated School in 1944. As Fred described it, he patiently waited while Shirley followed her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Fred and Shirley married in 1949, and the couple had three children, Connie, Craig and Caryn.
He enjoyed farming his entire life. Fred also served in the National Guard from 1948 to 1952 as a Squad Sargent in the 34th Division and volunteered for several community organizations, including: the Cooperative of Gowrie Board, the Webster Calhoun Telephone Association Board, the Dawson Township and the Paton-Churdan School Board. Along with his wife, Shirley, his greatest passion was serving God through his church. He was an active member at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Farnhamville, where he taught Sunday School for 18 years and served in various leadership roles. Fred said that man is born to serve others, and he gives thanks to God who sent His Son to pay for everyone’s sins on the cross. Salvation is free for all who believe. Thanks be to God for His mercy.
Fred was preceded in death by Shirley, his loving wife of nearly 65 years. He is survived by their three children, Connie (Richard) Carstens of Jefferson, Craig (Elaine) Fillman of Paton and Caryn (Chuck) Hane of Jefferson; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Tim) Rasmussen, Joshua (Mylissa) Carstens, Joy (Bobby) Johnson, Sarah (Peter) Parks, Kelly (Mike) Sams, Aimee (Matt) Bunker and Charlie Hane; and eleven great grandchildren.

Donna Jean Anderson was born May 11, 1934. Donna was raised on a farm near Paton. She attended School in Paton, graduating from Paton High School in 1952. She then continued her education at Iowa State Teaching College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. Donna taught 5th grade in Gowrie from 1954 to 1957. On March 22, 1957, she was united in marriage to Frank Light at the United Methodist Church in Paton. The couple established their home and farmed in the Callender and Gowrie area. Donna later was a substitute teacher in the area schools for 10 years. Donna played organ at the Callender United Methodist Church for 38 years. She is a member of the United Methodist Church in Gowrie and UMW.

On October 19, 1947, Doris was united in marriage to Glen Mundt at her parents’ home south of Gowrie. The couple established their home and farmed north of Farnhamville. In 1958, they moved to a farm south of Gowrie, which they farmed until retiring in 1989. After retiring they then moved into Gowrie. Doris was a member of the Lanyon Covenant Church. She was active in TOPS and enjoyed bowling in a league for several years.

Mickey was born November 2, 1941 in Fort Dodge. He graduated from Callender High School. Mickey farmed but his passion was driving truck, Peterbilt trucks to be exact. He drove all across the United States and Canada. On October 9, 2004, he was married to Sonja Swenson. They made their home on Mickey’s family farm.
Mickey loved to fish. He also enjoyed old cars and watching Westerns. He was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church.

Ben earned the rank of Staff Sargent before his discharge in 1955.Ben moved to Babbitt, Minnesota with his eldest brother, Gerald, to work for four decades in the Babbitt Taconite (Iron) Mine. Shortly after moving, he married Carol Long of Lehigh and raised a family. Ben and Carol were married 62 years before her passing in 2018. In the mine, Ben drove trucks and most earthmoving equipment and worked in the carpentry department for four decades. Ben was an active member of the Woodland Presbyterian Church, Boy Scouts of America and various youth athletics.After retirement, Ben and Carol moved to Callender to again connect with friends and family in Iowa. They enjoyed traveling across the United States in their motorhome, which they made as a second home.
