Eventually, Melissa's talent and dedication led her to Heartland Dental in Effingham, where she rose to the role of project coordinator, a testament to her exceptional work ethic and her knack for leadership. Melissa's interests were as colorful and dynamic as her personality. Her culinary skills were legendary, especially her coconut, pecan, and lemon pies, and Thanksgiving was a time for her to shine, sharing her talents with those she held dear. She was an adventurer at heart, having explored the scenic beauty of states like West Virginia and Tennessee alongside her husband Loren on their side-by-side. Her passion for travel was matched only by her love for fast cars - though she always wanted a Dodge Hellcat, we're glad that dream never came to fruition, as her lead foot would have surely led her behind bars!

Fishing at the family pond and engaging in retail therapy on Amazon were among the simple pleasures that brought her immense joy. Her generosity knew no bounds, especially when it came to her cherished nieces and nephews, whom she spoiled with innumerable toys and a generous helping of sweets. Melissa's canine companions, first Lexi and then Coco, also benefitted from this dear woman's affection and care.

Melissa Zerkel's legacy lives on in our memories of her adventurous spirit, her boundless generosity, and her loving heart. She taught us to seize every moment with both hands and to approach life with gusto and a smile. She showed us that to love is to give unconditionally, to laugh is to live fully, and to be generous is to enrich the world around us. We will always remember Melissa, not with sorrow, but with the joy she infused into every aspect of her life. Her story may have ended, but her influence is eternal.

She married Loren Zerkel on September 5, 2009, and he survives. She is also survived by her father, Clell Fry; her brother & sister-in-law, Kevin & Lindsey Fry; her brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Paul & Dawn Zerkel, Jon & Jane Ann Zerkel, and Lynn & Michelle Zerkel; her beloved nephews and nieces, Blake Fry, Riley Kay Fry, Isaac Zerkel, and Macy Zerkel; her father-in-law, Ray Zerkel; as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rita (White) Fry; by her grandparents, Mac & Virginia White and Bob & Irene Fry; and by her mother-in-law, Elfrieda Zerkel.

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4th, at the funeral home, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. In honor of her love of dogs, memorials may be made to the "Humane Society of Olney", with envelopes available at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Born on October 14, 1954, in Robinson, IL, his early years were filled with cheeky escapades, such as shadowing the milkman to swipe chocolate milk and doughnuts with his friends! Needless to say, Jay was known for his ornery nature, further exemplified by his preference for skipping school. Yet, he managed to charm his way through to graduate Robinson High School with the Class of 1972.

That same year, he married Susan (Johnson) McDaniel, and through this union, Jay was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Valerie Shidler (and husband Jason) and Jennifer Crampton. His heart found love again with Trudy (Hill) Krick in 1989, leading to their marriage in 1999. Through Trudy, he gained a son, Travis Krick (and wife Kristi). As the years passed, he became a grandpa to Gracie Shidler, Ethan Shidler, Jackson Harmon, Andrew Crampton, Jarrett Crampton, Chase Crampton, and Bryce Crampton and a great-grandpa to Layla and Lakelyn Crampton. His life was further enriched by his "bonus" son, Carlos Cepeda (and wife Gabriella), their children, Emiliano and Alejandro, and Jay's fur "babies," Millie, Tillie, and Lillie. His brothers-in-law, Fred Newton (and wife Joan), Jess Newton, Art Newton (and wife Brenda), Tom Hill (and wife Laura), and Bill Hill (and wife Barb), all survive him, as does his sister-in-law, Bonnie Heath, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Herman Seaney & Ava Madeline "Preach" (Culp) Seaney; his sister & brother-in-law, Jean (Seaney) & Rex Sutfin; his parents-in-law, Roy "Jim" Hill & Pauline (Gilman) Hill; his sister-in-law, Linda Newton; and his brother-in-law, Paul Heath.

Jay's professional journey began with various local jobs, but none captivated his interest until he joined Local #157 as a pipefitter in 1978. His good work and determination saw him rise through the ranks, eventually taking over Morris Construction in the early 2000s. He transformed it into the best union contracting company for his employees, a testament to his intelligence and business acumen. Jay was able to sell the business and retire at the young age of 55, eager to embrace a life of leisure and exploration with Trudy, telling her, "We're going to go play." And play they did! They made a number of trips to Cancun, which quickly became a favorite destination for the couple. And while this became a sort of home away from home for them, Jay was most comfortable in the sanctuary of his garage. There, surrounded by his beloved fur "babies", Jay would spend his time watching TV while drinking coffee or enjoying a few beers and, of course, smoking his cigarettes. That's not to say that he didn't get out much. An avid and skilled golfer, he taught Trudy how to play, and this pastime brought them countless hours of joy (and perhaps occasional embarrassment.) His love for bow and mushroom hunting spoke to his connection with nature, as did his exceptional green thumb. His inquisitive spirit led him to explore a myriad of other interests, from polishing stones to refinishing furniture to constructing Tiki huts inspired by those he admired in Cancun, but nothing could hold a candle to his beloved Minnesota Vikings. A lifelong fan since the days of Fran Tarkenton, Jay's loyalty to the team knew no bounds, and it would have surprised no one if the man had bled purple and gold!

Jay's analytical mind was always in motion, deducing the best options and solving problems with a wisdom that was both rare and invaluable. His perspective was unique, often offering an unfiltered view that was his own, unafraid of whether it was popular or not. His debates with Trudy were legendary, and his philosophy was simple: it was his way or the highway! Yet, beneath that tough exterior lay a soft-hearted man who could be moved to tears by the simplest of things. Though we ourselves mourn this devastating loss, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy endures in the lives he has shaped. Jay Seaney, a man like no other, will forever be remembered as a beacon of what it means to live unapologetically on your own terms. Let us carry forward the torch of his memory, illuminating our paths with the brilliance of his life's example.

Born on November 5, 1952, in Robinson, IL, Rick's early years in the Palestine area were filled with the kind of mischief that legends are made of. A graduate of Robinson High School, he was known for stirring up the town alongside his brother Nolan, living life to the brim with a youthful exuberance that would define his character for years to come. Rick's resilience and love for life were evident in the way he lived each day to the fullest, especially in his most rambunctious moments. Following high school, Rick entered the workforce with vigor. His stint at Briggs Pottery led to a brief tenure as a truck driver for Pepsi, but he found his true calling truck driving for Tempco, a job that allowed him to stay close to home and be with his family every weekend. His devotion to his loved ones was further demonstrated as he helped his son Brian build grain bins on his days off. A man of many interests, Rick exhibited his skill tinkering in and around the house and on his 1955 Belair, which was the apple of his eye, as were the Harley motorcycles he rode as an active member of ABATE. Western films, especially those starring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, offered him solace in quieter times. A natural outdoorsman, Rick relished the tranquility of fly fishing in Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee, where the cool river waters offered him solace from his chronic back pain. Whether he was playing pool, ping pong, or indulging in his orneriness by playfully picking on those around him, Rick's lively spirit and sense of humor were infectious. It must also be noted that Rick's ability to strike up a conversation with anyone was unparalleled. He possessed a gift for dialogue that could turn strangers into friends over the course of a multi-hour exchange!

In 2009, Rick faced a life-altering accident that would test his resolve. Overlooked nerve damage in his neck led to a slow paralysis, a challenge he faced with exceptional courage and grace. In fact, it could be said that Rick's passion for life remained unbridled. He found joy in watching Gaither Homecomings and car shows on TV, feeding his love of old cars. More than anything, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He adored them to the point that he inquired about them every day.

As we bid farewell to Rick Mendenhall, we celebrate a man who embraced life with open arms and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all he touched. His stories, lessons, and laughter will resonate forevermore in the lives of those he loved: his children & their spouses, Brian & Nichole Mendenhall, Rachelle Simms, and Richard "Rick" & Kayla Mendenhall; his grandchildren, Isabella, Elliot, Emilee, Kane, and Hailey; his siblings, Leon Mendenhall, Margaret Littlejohn, Ronnie Mendenhall, Bruce Mendenhall, Keith Mendenhall, and Dawn Hussey; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl & Margaret Ruth (Graham) Mendenhall; his brothers, Terry Mendenhall (in infancy) and Nolan Mendenhall, Sr.; his sisters, Linda Ragland and Kathy York; and his grandson, Sawyer Mendenhall.

A time of visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A memorial service will immediately follow and be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Pastor Scott Mendenhall officiating. Thomas "Tom" Jochim - November 17, 1955 - March 18, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thomas "Tom" Jochim, 68, of Palestine, IL, passed away on March 18, 2024, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Born on November 17, 1955, in Vincennes, IN, Tom's early years were spent in Palestine, where he attended school. Classmates will remember him being a fixture in the principal's office; the principal, of course, being his father! A graduate of Palestine High School in 1974, Tom continued his education at Lincoln Trail College, where he specialized in Petro Tech, laying the groundwork for a career that would see him explore various industries.

His professional journey began at Tempco, where he contributed to its casket line before venturing to Texas to work in the oilfields. While the oil industry's unpredictable nature led to a layoff, Tom's resilient spirit found him driving for Coors and later engaging in the piping department at Tubular Scope, Inc. It was at this time that the paths of Tom and his beloved Debbie Collins crossed, thanks to a fortuitous proximity to her mother's bar, which he frequented. The couple married on September 21, 1985, and Debbie remains to cherish his memory.

Upon returning to his roots in Illinois in 1982, Tom continued to demonstrate his versatility at EH Baare as a MIG welder, at ATS in Lawrenceville as a material handler, and at TRW in Marshall as a machine operator. His compassion shone brightly by serving as a caregiver for a local gentleman in Palestine until the man's passing.

A lover of animals, Tom had a special bond with his dog, Chico, who was more like a child to him. His fondness for animals was evident in the way they gravitated toward him. A man of simple pleasures, Tom relished a home-cooked meal, with a ribeye steak, baked potato, and salad being among his favorite meals. He also had an insatiable sweet tooth, with a particular weakness for ice cream.

Tom's passions extended to games (which he approached with meticulous attention to the rules), family time around the table, and dancing with his wife, Debbie. His love for classic rock and Motown filled their home with joyous melodies. A devout Catholic, Tom's faith was unwavering, and he ensured that no matter where he traveled, he never missed Mass. In quieter moments, he enjoyed working on puzzles from the Robinson Daily News on his tablet, a pastime that brought him great satisfaction.

To those who knew him well, Tom was a vibrant, funny, and loving man with a heart of gold. While he may have been known for a quick temper, it was always swiftly followed by a forgiving heart. His lovable character made him a cherished presence in the lives of many, always ready to lend a hand or a kind word. As we remember the life of Tom Jochim, we know that the light of his 68 years will remain a beacon for all who were fortunate enough to know him. His journey through life was marked by the joy he found in the simplest of things, reminding us all to cherish the moments that make life truly sweet.

Tom is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Debbie; his sisters & brothers-in-law, Patricia & Richard Hanson, Judy & John Stephens, Susie Jochim, and Becky & Dwaine Rowe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome & Juanita (Taylor) Jochim, and his brother, David William Jochim.

Jim's childhood was filled with the kind of stories that make you believe in the vibrant spirit of boyhood adventure. From “parachuting” off a barn loft with an umbrella to accidentally blowing a rabbit to pieces on the annual family Thanksgiving Day hunt to singing with the family band at church and a camp meeting in Orleans, IN, his early life was a tapestry of shared moments that forged unbreakable family bonds. With a diploma from Palestine High School in hand, Jim boldly stepped into the world, embracing hard work at Hulman & Company in Terre Haute, where he was tasked with heaving 100-lb bags all day long. Though he also worked for a gas station in Terre Haute, the time came for him to move back home, where he ran his own car lot and body shop.

While he also sold cars for Terry Wiseman and briefly worked at Fair Rite, many will remember Jim for his decades of service and protection as a police officer in Palestine. From 1979-1984, he served his community as a patrolman before becoming the Palestine Police Chief in 1989, a role he held until his retirement in 2013. He stood as a pillar of integrity, holding fast to the principle that grace and understanding pave the road to true justice. This belief was reflected in his memoir, "Innocent Country Roads to Mean City Streets," and his well-regarded "Kop's Korner" column, evidencing a life rich in experience, wisdom, and, of course, humor! Further defining his dedication to justice and the well-being of our region was the decade he spent on the board of the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force and his stint as a child death investigator.

Jim's community engagement was equally notable. A member of the Palestine Chamber of Commerce since 1989, he served as its president in 2003, 2007, and 2008 and vice-president in 2006. He also served as a chairman for the Pioneer City Rodeo Committee, and his years of dedication were rewarded with an induction into the Pioneer City Hall of Fame in 2019. Everything considered, it is clear that Jim Clark was the kind of man who stood for something larger than himself.

Beyond his professional and civic roles, Jim reveled in his personal pursuits-whether breaking horses for his daughter, Lisa, or restoring a '69 Camaro with his son, Faron. His passion for cars, horse riding, and motorcycle racing were more than hobbies; they were avenues through which he conveyed life lessons of tenacity and joy to his children. Jim was also the ultimate grandfather. To them, he was a firm foundation of support and pride, always looking for opportunities to make a memory. Jacie, for example, enjoyed innumerable Dairy Queen dates with her granddad. Riding up in his beautifully restored red Mustang, she could always count on a good story and that he'd finish his ice cream well before her! He also cherished his wife, Kathy, who witnessed firsthand his remarkable ability to gift warmth and bring light to any room and any situation.

Jim Clark didn't just live; he thrived. He didn't just exist; he made a difference. And as we remember this remarkable man, let us carry forward the light he shone so brightly, continuing his legacy of sacrificial service and passion so that we may too enjoy the extraordinary ride through the wonderful journey of life.

He married Kathy (Pethtel) on May 3, 2012, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Clark; by his son, Faron Clark; by his grandkids, Tyler, Nick, Garrett, Lauren, and Jacie; by his step-kids, Travis Miller, David Miller, Erin Fuller, and Nathan Fuller; by his brother & sister-in-law, Bill & Pam Clark; by his sister & brother-in-law, Virginia & Will Deems; as well as several extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis "Hank" & Beulah A. (Rogers) Clark.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A funeral service will immediately follow and be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, with Rev. Paul Gray officiating. During the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to share their favorite memories of Jim and give expression to the fullness of his life. An avid hunter, he pursued deer, rabbit, mushrooms, and even the elusive arrowhead, amassing a significant collection that was a testament to his dedication. His interest extended to rocks and Indian beads, each piece a story of his adventures. Joe's love for fishing was well-known, from the tranquility of local ponds and the Wabash River to the thrill of deep-sea fishing off Panama City. His earlier days in Biloxi, MS saw him often fishing in the bay, embracing the serenity of the water. Camping was also a joy for Joe, particularly along the river banks, though he also enjoyed sites like Lincoln Trail State Park and Sullivan Lake. Motorcycles were another lifelong passion of his, and he would often ride on a whim, exploring the roads with a sense of freedom. This same adventurous spirit recently led him to take to the skies over Pigeon Forge in a helicopter.

It must be said that Joe's love for dogs was profound and unwavering, with a special place in his heart for Pitbull mixes. He shared his life with several canine companions, most recently with his beloved Midnight. It's also important to acknowledge that Joe's life was not without its struggles. He faced personal challenges, including his conduct in relationships, which impacted those closest to him. His life story is a reminder that humans are complex beings, capable of both love and error.

In the end, Joe Pierson's story is one of adventure and spirit, a man who lived with intensity and sought excitement in every corner of his life. Despite the challenges posed by changing national policies, the experience honed Mitch's skills and resolve. He spent the rest of his professional life as an independent heavy equipment repair specialist, a role that saw him put his personal stamp on numerous roads and highways. His membership in the teamsters union enabled him to work with companies like Concrete Pavers and Hazex Construction.

His mechanical prowess wasn't limited to work; it was also his hobby. He loved to tinker with machinery and was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. He was a rock to those in despair, always there with a hearty "You can do it!" to lift spirits. His own life had its share of ups and downs, yet the lessons he shared from his experiences only underscored his wisdom and compassion.

They weren't the only ones who thrived under his attentive care, as the tomatoes, corn, cabbage, and other delicious veggies that came from his garden bore witness to his naturally green thumb. It goes without saying that these made their way into many of Mitch's delicious meals. After all, his culinary skills were legendary among his family and friends. From baking irresistible biscuits and cakes to smoking succulent tenderloin, he found joy in sharing his creations with his loved ones. As we bid farewell to Mitchell David Parish, let us remember him not only for the life he lived but also for the countless lives he uplifted. After all, Mitch was a beacon of strength and encouragement whose zest for life beckoned all who knew him to live with that same determination of spirit that marked his 79 years with us. Thank you, Mitch, and Godspeed!

He married Marilyn Wilson on May 11, 2002, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Angie & Jason Walters; his sons, Aaden Parish and Gavin Parish; his bonus children, Monica Wilson, Christa Weaver, Shawn Wilson; his brothers, George Parish, Vernal Parish, Cleman & Candy Parish, and Chris & Kim Parish; by several nieces and nephews; as well as his cat, Midnight, and his bird, Sunny. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noble R. & Lela Grace (Southers) Parish; by his brothers, Jimmie Ray Parish, Jackie Joe Parish, and Bobbie Lee Parish.

Born on April 18, 1931, at the Ikemire Clinic in Palestine, she would go on to graduate from Palestine High School before marrying Leroy Fuller on December 17, 1949. The couple embarked on a life of farming in Porterville for a few years, at which point Eileen began to embrace her role as a homemaker. With the establishment of Fuller Petroleum in 1972, she became the company's meticulous bookkeeper, never resting until the day's work was complete, sometimes working into the early hours of the morning. Her dedication to the family business was unwavering, as she managed the accounts until 2023.

Eileen was the epitome of love and generosity, placing the needs of her family above her own. She was the heart of every family gathering, where her specialty fried chicken and pork roast with noodles became the centerpieces of many cherished memories. Eileen's selflessness was evident in her insistence on serving others first, ensuring that everyone else's plate was full before she considered sitting down to eat. Her home was a hub of celebration, with every birthday and holiday an opportunity to gather her loved ones. Laughter and friendly competition filled the air as card games like Rummikub and Pinochle were played after meals. Travel was another joy for Eileen, as she accompanied her dear friend Reva Reynolds on numerous adventures as the grateful guest of the tour guide.

Back home, Eileen's hands were rarely idle. For a time, she was an avid crocheter and created blankets that her grandchildren will treasure for years to come. A collector of stories and moments, she also had a unique habit of collecting dimes and never discarded anything, especially that which held sentimental value. Her love for hummingbirds was indicative of her appreciation for the small and simple beauties of life.

A longtime member of the Palestine First Christian Church, her spirit found solace and strength in the fellowship of her faith community and in the countless sermons she heard echoing through the church's sanctuary. It could be said, however, that her life was, itself, a sermon. The sacrificial way she gave of herself helped us all to see more clearly the love of Jesus. We find comfort and assurance knowing that she is with her Savior and look forward to that day when, by the grace of God, we see her again.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Leroy Fuller; her sons, Jim & wife Cindy Fuller and Greg Fuller & fiancée Chloe Stephens; her grandchildren, Tammy & Dustin Kennedy, Lisa & Jeremy Beabout, and Brittney Fuller & Josh Griffin; her great-grandchildren, Wyatt Kennedy & fiancée Katelyn Wilber, Alysa Kennedy, Zoey Beabout, and Brody Beabout; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Della Faye (Lankston) Waldrop; her siblings, Warren Rex Waldrop, Edna Maxine McCammon, and Lois Pauline Fuller; her son, Jerry Duane Fuller; and her grandson, Anthony Fuller.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will immediately follow and be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. Obituary Preview: William Lloyd "Bill" Holtsman, 81, of Cadiz, KY, formerly of Palestine, IL, passed away peacefully at Spring Creek Health Care in Murray, KY, on January 16, 2024. Born on April 30, 1942, in Crocker, MO, Bill's family moved to Palestine in the early 1950s. After graduating from Palestine High School and Eastern Illinois University, he embarked on a career as an accountant in Chicago. His dedication to family brought him back home to Palestine to join the family timber and sawmill business in Flat Rock, helping his ailing father. Bill's entrepreneurial spirit shone in 1979 when he became the owner and operator of Marathon Tire Service in Olney until his well-deserved retirement in 2000.

Much of his time outside of work was spent with a rod and reel in hand. A patient and dedicated fisherman, he spent countless hours in the serene waters of Northern Wisconsin and Ontario with his fishing buddies, perfecting the art of musky fishing-a feat not for the faint of heart, as musky are notoriously challenging to locate and catch. Bill's trophy-sized catches reflected not only his skill but also his reverence for nature, as he released most of what he caught. His custom-made lures were a testament to his creativity, much like the jewelry he crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail.

It was evident to everyone who knew him that Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. In addition to fishing, he enjoyed good food, be that a steak expertly grilled at home or a delicious pizza from Monical's or Bobe's. These times nourished not only his body but his soul as well, as the fare was almost always enjoyed alongside the family he adored and worked hard to provide for. His love extended beyond his family and was also lavished upon his pets, whose companionship gave him immense joy. An animal lover through and through, his inquiries about his beloved dog during his illness exemplified his enduring compassion. After all, Bill was a gentle giant whose stature was matched only by his capacity for kindness.

Known for his thoughtfulness and ability to listen with grace, Bill was the epitome of a gentleman. His advice was always welcomed, imparting wisdom without imposing solutions. His reserved and dignified nature was balanced by a quick smile that could light up a room. Despite facing health trials in his later years, Bill's unwavering positivity never diminished. His strength of character in the face of adversity was a source of inspiration to all of us. In fact, Bill Holtsman was a man who made you aspire to be your best self. His example of living a life filled with dignity, patience, and passion will continue to guide and influence those who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Reba Holtsman of Cadiz, KY; his daughters, Beth Brimberry (Jim Boyer) of Carterville, IL, and Rebecca Anderson (Jimmie Smith) of Cadiz, KY; and his step-children, Pam Krueger of Nashville, TN, Angela Newcomb of Robinson, IL, and Tim Newcomb (Tammy) of San Carlos, FL. Bill's legacy continues through his granddaughter, Emily Rochelle Boyer; his step-grandchildren, Danielle Krueger, Jordan Krueger, Tia Brown (Andy), Ben Newcomb, and Lance Newcomb; as well as his step-great-grandchildren, Joey Brown and Hudson Newcomb. His sister, Sandra Dee Heap (William) of Robinson, IL, along with his nephew, Scott McCord (Julie) of Evansville, IN, great-niece, Harley Marie McCord of Evansville, IN, and brothers-in-law, Ronald Tohill of Lawrenceville, IL, and Ray Randolph (Jennie) of Spring Hill, TN, will also hold his memory dear, as will the many cousins and friends whose lives he touched.

He embarked on his life's journey on November 18, 1941, and his story came full circle as he passed away peacefully in the very house in Palestine where it began. Raised with the rich soil of the Midwest under his fingernails, Don grew up farming in Palestine, graduating from Palestine High School in 1959. As an only child, he was cherished and, let's be honest, a little spoiled! Although household chores such as dishes and laundry escaped his purview, he found joy in vacuuming and mopping - perhaps his way of clearing a path to the clarity and simplicity that he appreciated in life.

Don's work ethic was as sturdy as the crops he tended. Hardworking and dedicated, Don's heart beat to the rhythm of the tractor's engine, his happiest moments found with his hands on the wheel amid the tranquility of nature, be that mowing grass or working the farm that was both his heritage and his passion. In addition to his many years tending the soil, he also stood a faithful watch with Stewart Security for more than two decades.

Valued experiences and simple pleasures filled Don's 82 years - the tinkering in his garage, the quiet satisfaction of tilling a garden, the joy of devouring a fish dinner, the wonder of watching a train go by - these seemingly mundane moments were where he encountered the goodness of life. What's more, we were able to see the goodness of life in the way he lived his own! Anyone who knew Don could attest that his spirit resonated with kindness, patience, and compassion. A man of few words, he spoke volumes through his actions, never hesitant to extend a helping hand. His demeanor was gentle, earning him the nickname 'Dr. Doolittle' as animals were instinctively drawn to his tender presence without a whisper of fear.

True to his nature, Don cared deeply for his family. His relationship with his wife, Pat, was woven into a beautiful love story. That story began when they were teenagers at a church youth group gathering, and their love would grow to be as deep and enduring as their shared faith. As the wise King Solomon once wrote, "Love is as strong as death, jealousy as cruel as the grave." This truth echoed in the longing Don carried for Pat, who preceded him in death on November 3, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Palmer & M. Blanche (Lankston) Brashear.

He is survived by his treasured daughters & sons-in-law, Sheryl Lynn Brashear (Palestine, IL), Cynthia Dawn & Darwin Rideout (Nortonville, KY), and Carol Ann & Chris Guyer (Palestine, IL), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Megan Alyse Rideout, Adam Paul Rideout, and Chance Ausby Guyer, who consider his legacy a blessing beyond measure. It is said that the measure of a man can be found in the lives he touches. Don's gentle, kind, faith-filled spirit left an indelible impression on many hearts, including his family of faith at Outer West Market Church of Christ, which he helped shepherd from its inception, having served as an elder for many years.

"His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'" (Matthew 25:21). Don now abides in everlasting joy and peace, his work here complete, his legacy a testament to a life well-lived.

Obituary Preview: Juanita Taylor Jochim of Palestine, IL passed away surrounded by family on January 9, 2024. She was 95 years old.

She was born on December 19, 1928, in Evansville, IN to William and Agatha Taylor. Juanita grew up in Evansville, attending Central High School and marrying Jerome G. Jochim at St. Joseph Catholic Church on September 6, 1948. She graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor's in education and taught arts education at Oblong Public School, Palestine Grade School and High School, and Lincoln Trail College.

Since 1952, Juanita and Jerome made their home in Palestine raising their six children and volunteering in numerous ways in their community. Juanita was an active volunteer with the Palestine Preservation Projects Society (PPPS) and was instrumental in the restoration of the Fife Opera House and the Historic Harper House. She was so proud of her work to help preserve these buildings and cherished the friends she made along the way. She loved being a member of the community groups Current Topics and Bridge Club. For several years, Juanita was a promoter of local art in any way she could. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing cards, especially nertz with her family and bridge with her friends. She was a long-time member of the St. Elizabeth Church and along with her husband Jerome supported multiple RCIA candidates through the process of becoming full members of the Catholic Church.

She is survived by four daughters: Patricia (Richard) Hanson, Judy (John) Stephens, Susie Jochim, and Becky (Dwaine) Rowe; one son: Thomas (Debra) Jochim; twelve grandchildren: Debbie (Matt) Hardy, Erica (Monty) Brown, Angie (Larry) Robbins, Dana (Mark) Wesolowski, Jennifer (Vincent) Lee, Christy Brotherton, Crystal (Ryan) Chambers, Megan Hanson, and Ashley, Kristin, Melissa, and Joshua; twenty-four great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; her sister Mary Lou Taylor, and many nieces and nephews, especially Carol (Ron) Cates and Pam (Don) Sharp.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years Jerome G. Jochim; her adored son David William; her parents William and Agatha Taylor; her sister Jean Vaught; and two sons-in-law: Rick McKinley and Bill Aggers.

She will be missed dearly by all who called her mom, grandma, sister, aunt, teacher, or friend, but will be remembered fondly by all for the love and compassion she showed everyone and for the laughs and assistance she was always ready to give.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Peter and Mitzi.

Al grew up in Decoto, CA, and attended Washington High School in Fremont. His formative years left a lasting impression on him, shaping the man he would become. Immediately after high school, Al answered the call of duty and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he played a crucial role in armament, loading missiles and rockets onto aircraft.

Following his military service, Al eventually found himself pursuing a career that matched his passion for aviation. He landed what he considered his dream job with Pan-Am, where he thrived as a jet mechanic. Al's love for the work was palpable, and he often spoke fondly of his time there. After Pan-Am's closure, he transitioned into a career in injection molding, working for Norton Industries in Hayward, CA, and later for JAE in Oregon, from which he retired.

During his retirement, Al discovered a new passion as a docent at the Evergreen Museum, delighting visitors for 6-7 years with his knowledge and enthusiasm for aviation history before he and Jean moved to Palestine to be closer to her family. Most of his time here was spent reading mystery novels by authors like J. A. Jance or spending time in the yard with his beloved dog, his "baby", Tootsie.

Though Al was known for his glass-half-empty outlook and a gruff exterior that masked a caring heart, he was also a man of great generosity. His approach to life was pragmatic, and he cared deeply for those around him, even if he didn't always show it in conventional ways.

In 1982, he married the love of his life, Jean, and together, they blended their families, with Al bringing three children to the union and Jean bringing two. In addition to Jean, Al is survived by their children, Anthony Narveson, Kevin Narveson, Terri Dickey, Kim Millard, and Ann Lary; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Vera Narveson.

Anita grew up in Palestine, where she graduated from Palestine High School. Her work ethic was evident to all who knew her as she dedicated several years to Brock's Food Town Grocery Store in Palestine. Beyond the store, she took pride in mowing cemeteries across Crawford County, ensuring they were well-kept and respected.

She was always a busybody, maintaining a large garden canning the fruits of her labor. Anita's close bond with her sister was a source of great joy, and she could often be found sharing laughter and stories.

Those who knew Anita would describe her as loving, friendly, and funny. Her presence brought light and levity to any room, and her selfless acts of kindness were felt by many.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 7th, at the Palestine Cemetery, and the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of these arrangements. She was born on March 9, 1943, in Vincennes, IN, the daughter of James & Margaret (Prichard) Goodwin, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Roscoe Goodwin. Joan leaves behind her sister & brother-in-law, Sandy & Bob Bryans, along with her nieces & nephews, Dawn & Larry Biggs, Diann & Brian Nolte, Jennifer Goodwin & James Cherry, Joshua Goodwin, and Jim & Meridith Bryans. She is also survived by five great-nieces & great-nephews and several special cousins.

By the time she graduated from Palestine High School in 1961, Joan had realized that she was called to the nursing field, so she enrolled in the nursing program at Vincennes University. She took her newfound knowledge to Paducah, KY, where she began what would become a long and rewarding career as a nurse. Over the years, she cared for patients from Paducah, KY to Champaign, IL to Oakland, CA, and all the way back home to Vincennes, and spent much of her time caring for mothers and newborns in Labor and Delivery.

She eventually moved to West Lafayette, IN, to pursue a bachelor's degree at Purdue University. Her time here sparked her undying allegiance to the Boilermakers, to the point that she was made an Honorary Member of the Purdue Reamer Club, an organization dedicated to observing the traditions of Purdue, supporting Boilermaker sports, and developing school spirit. Joan transitioned into industrial nursing at Central Lab in West Lafayette, IN, and concluded her illustrious career at Eli Lilly, where she retired in January 2001 after 22 years of dedicated service.

Beyond her professional life, Joan was known for her generosity and love for life. She enjoyed traveling and took her nieces and nephews on their first trips to Europe. She was fond of surprising them with gifts and new experiences, creating unforgettable memories that they will cherish forever. It wasn't just her family that benefitted from this caring woman's generosity and support, as she filled a need in her community by loaning family heirlooms to help fill The Farm at Prophetstown, a restored catalog house from the 1920s. She was also active in many volunteer groups, such as cuddling babies in the NICU and shopping for area Angel Trees and Clothe-A-Child programs. Her skill in the kitchen led her to make meals for the local police department. Her mouth-watering culinary specialties were staples of every holiday season. Joan Goodwin was a woman of many interests, but her sense of humor and loyal friendship made her a joy to be around. If she counted you as a friend, Joan would go out of her way to help in any way she could. She was the epitome of kindness and generosity, making an impact as large as the infamously oversized "Joan" cookies she'd make on cookie days at the nursing home!

In the words of legendary Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, "You can always be a little bit better." What are we if not better because Joan Goodwin lived? As we look ahead, may we never forget to also look back, recognizing that her memory will continue to mold us into better people; people who will continue to carry on her legacy of generosity and love for years to come.

She furthered her education at Eastern Illinois University, where she indulged her passion for music before leaving early to marry the love of her life, Beauford Keith Knapp, whom she married on December 31, 1954. Janice's professional life was a testament to her tenacity and unyielding spirit. After moving to the Chicago area, she had a couple of jobs before joining the Ferrara Candy Company in 1962, where she dedicated 37 years of her life. Rising to Vice President Office Administration at a time when women were scarcely seen in leadership roles, Janice left her indelible mark on the company's legacy. She later embarked on an admirable 18-year career with Green Meadows Property Management before hanging up her hat for good at the age of 83, but not before setting an example of grit and passion that inspired all who knew her!

Family meant everything to Janice. Following her retirement from Ferrara, she moved to Batavia, IL, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She filled her free moments there with laughter, love, and heartfelt conversations. She loved nothing more than seeing her loved ones flourish, and she took great joy in supporting her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at sporting events and celebrating their victories. She loved having family come and spend time with her at her vacation home in Naples, FL, where she temporarily visited off and on for several years. No matter where she was, the doors of her home were always open, offering the warmth of her kindness and the opportunity to create memories that will forever be etched in the hearts of her loved ones.

Janice will always be remembered for her efforts to cultivate happiness in the lives of those around her. She had a large heart that beat to bless others, and she was always there for anyone who needed her. She was as compassionate as she was caring, always ready to offer a word of encouragement or to pray for those suffering or in distress. Janice was, after all, a woman of faith. As a young woman, she filled the Palestine First Christian Church sanctuary with piano music that was as worshipful as it was beautiful and would continue to give God glory through the way she lived out her 89 years.

Though we mourn our loss, we know that she is gone from our sight, that is all. She is more alive now than she ever was on this side of eternity. Until we meet again, may the threads of love, devotion, and resilience that Janice Knapp weaved into our hearts become her lasting legacy in us.

She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Hasil & Tom Corcoran (Hendersonville, TN); by her grandchildren, Austin Hasil (Bloomingdale, IL) and Alana Hasil (St. Charles, IL); by her sisters, Sarah Liston (Palestine, IL) and Arlene Shorter (Sullivan, IN); by her brother & sister-in-law, Ronald & Georgana Shew (Fort Myers, FL); by her sister-in-law, Jackie Shew (Lexington, SC); as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 45 years, Beauford "Keith" Knapp; by her parents, Frank & Zelda (Duke) Shew; by her sister, Laveda (Shew) Massie; by her brother, Carl Lee Shew; and by her nephews and niece, Steven, Lisa, and Ronnie Massie.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 16th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Obituary Preview: Sandra “Sandee” Kay (Eveland) Mitchell, 72, Attica, passed away in the Ascension St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital, with her family, by her side, on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at 10:20 p.m.

Sandee, as she was known to family and friends, was born in Palestine, Illinois on November 23, 1950. She was the daughter of the late Roscoe Eveland and Lucy (Dunlap) Carver. Sandee was raised in Palestine, Illinois and graduated from Palestine High School in 1969. She later moved to Attica in 1989.

Sandee cleaned houses for local families in and around Attica. She was devoted to her family and was also a stay-at-home mother. She later tended bar for the Eagles, Moose and V.F.W. in Attica.

She was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge and V.F.W. Post in Attica. She enjoyed bowling and watching her game shows. She liked to go dancing, but her favorite past time was the time spent with her family, especially with her grandchildren.

Sandee was first married to Gary Lawhead. She later married Richard “Mitch” E. Mitchell on July 25, 1987 in Effingham, IL. Mitch preceded her in death on May 17, 2017.

Sandee leaves behind her four children, Amy King (John Alexander), Van Buren, AR; Natasha Wilderman (Matt Sundt), Zach (Candi) Mitchell and Levi Mitchell, all of Attica; her fur baby, Mortee; a sister, Melody Ramsey (Miguel Villa), Robinson, IL; thirteen grandchildren, Seth, Trenton, Shaelyn, McKenzie, Addisyn, Indie, Payton, Natali, Quinn, Owen, Roman, Evie and Elliott; several great-grandchildren; two step sisters and a step brother; a sister-in-law, Bertha Eveland, Atwood, IL. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Patsy Kirk and Joyce Rigg; three brothers, Chuck Eveland, Everett Eveland and Darrell Eveland.

Charleen was born on December 29, 1947, in Robinson, IL, and peacefully passed away at her home in Evansville, IN, on October 20, 2023.

Char's journey of life was intimately shared with her beloved husband, Craig Saxton, whom she married on June 29, 2011, and who survives her. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the lives of her son & daughter-in-law, Gabe & Cathy Finch, and granddaughters Sydney and Ally. Charleen also leaves behind her step-children, Kodie Nessen, Melissa Comer, Becky Call, Michael Saxton, and James Saxton, along with six step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Her brother & sister-in-law, Keith & Cathy Spence, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends will remember her fondly. Charleen was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie R. Vaughn and Maxine (McDaniel) Spence, her step-father, Lawrence Spence, and sister, Jan Drummond.

Char's educational journey began in Palestine, IL, where she graduated from Palestine High School before embarking to Indiana State University, majoring in Social Work. From there, Charleen's life was characterized by a diverse and rich work history. From setting up Pandora Jewelry at the mall in Evansville to doing everything from bookkeeping to working the line at Mike Libs and the Chocolate Factory, she dived deep into every task she committed to.

But Char's work adventures didn't stop there; she was most known for her unique contributions to radio. The vibrant and charismatic Char played "Trixie," a clever, wisecracking waitress in the syndicated radio show "Daddy Dave's Hollywood Diner" in the late 80s and early 90s. Soon after, she transitioned into WJPS in the 90s, maintaining her renowned "Trixie" character. For over 20 years, Char represented DJ Mike Harvey, managing all work for his show, "Super Gold", and was crucial in connecting with affiliates and pulling Super Gold Sock Hops together. A lover of 50's rock and roll and doo-wop music, Char reveled in the bygone era to the extent of owning a poodle skirt! Over the years, she was fortunate enough to meet many iconic figures from the 50s, including Dick Clark and Elvis Presley.

Her other interests were as vibrant as she was - a master of crafting and scrapbooking, she was also an ace in the kitchen, as evidenced by the many mouth-watering casseroles she was known to whip together for those she loved. Char was a generous, caring soul who adhered to the age-old idiom of greeting friends like family, ensuring that everyone received a warm hug. She nurtured us all with love and was our biggest cheerleader, encouraging us to live with that same dazzling radiance of spirit that marked her 75 years with us.

Charleen "Char" Finch lived a vibrant, joy-filled life. With an unmatched energy and a keen sense of humor, she touched people's hearts in a unique way that could never be replicated. She was a remarkable woman who, even in her passing, continues to spread smiles and laughter through the memories she left behind. So let us not remember Char with sadness but with joy for having had her in our lives. We celebrate her spirit, her laughter, and, most importantly, we celebrate the love she so generously gave to each of us. This love will live on in our hearts for as long as we have the breath to speak her name.

Obituary Preview: Ola Gwen Sparks, 91, of Palestine, IL, died peacefully on October 12, 2023, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family. Born on March 27, 1932, in Graymont, IL, she grew up in the Palestine area, where she was active in numerous groups, from Y-Teens and Future Homemakers of America to the Girl Reserves and Gingham Girls. Her love of music prompted her to pick up the French horn, which she played throughout her tenure at Palestine Grade School and Palestine High School before graduating on May 27, 1949. The very next day, May 28, 1949, she married the love of her life, Willis Sparks. She was not only a devoted partner in life but also in business, as she eventually began assisting with bookkeeping at Sparks Motors, the family business. Before that, she had worked for a number of other local companies, from the Bobby Pin Factory and Buchanan's to the Index.

Her life was adorned with many interests that she pursued with vigor and enthusiasm. An avid bird watcher, she especially loved watching her hummingbirds make their way to her feeder. She would take flight herself in her husband Willis' N6646A and her son Tom's N35278 aircraft. Back on the ground, she enjoyed the thrill of fishing in Minnesota and especially in Canada, where she once reeled in a 45-inch Northern Pike a couple of years after her husband died. Willis would have been proud...and likely a little jealous! Ever the adventurous spirit, she cherished every opportunity to travel to destinations like Las Vegas and Florida with her sister and sisters-in-law.

Back home, Ola Gwen was an active member of several local organizations, including the Southeast LaMotte Home Extension, Current Topics, Vincennes Eagles Auxiliary #384, Elks Ladies Auxiliary #1188, and she was also a "pink lady" with the Crawford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. A guiding force in her community, she held many positions of authority at different points in her life, including those of Boy Scout leader, Campfire Girl leader, and Sunday school teacher. But the most treasured roles of her life were those of wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was the greatest joy of her life, as evidenced by innumerable family outings to Holiday World, Kings Island, and the Air Force Museum. Her love was also tangibly expressed in her wonderful baking. In short, filling her loved ones up filled her up! But that was just Ola Gwen, always thinking of others before herself. This generosity of spirit was no doubt born out of her saving faith in Jesus, who wrapped his arms around her on Thursday and welcomed her home.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Willis Sparks, and her parents, Samuel & Opal (Arterburn) Wakefield. As the last surviving member of the Wakefield siblings, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Wakefield (in infancy), Jack Wakefield, Duane Wakefield, and Bob Wakefield, and her sisters, Mildred White and Helen Jean Smith. Her sisters-in-law and travel companions, Jaquelyn Wakefield and Shirley Wakefield, predeceased her, as did her grandson, Thomas Jason "TJ" Sparks. Despite her losses, Ola Gwen continued to find joy in life, finding loving companionship with Charlie Patton in her later years, and he survives. She is also survived by her children, Debbie & husband Bruce Fulling, and Tom & wife Nona Sparks, as well as her grandchildren, Lisa Sparks, Amanda Christy, Tina & Darren Joiner, LeeAnne & Josh Monday, Jeffrey & Ashley Sparks, Kaycee & Eric Walker, Lance & Chelsea Fulling, and Jay & Tina Kennedy. Her lineage proudly extends to seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Obituary Preview: Betty J. Powell, a cherished member of her community and a devoted woman of faith, passed away peacefully at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL, on September 7, 2023. Born on November 13, 1935, in Licking Township, west of Annapolis, IL, she attended a one-room schoolhouse growing up and would eventually graduate early from Hutsonville High School in 1952 at the tender age of 16. It was at this time that she moved to Robinson, IL, and found her lifelong career as a secretary at the law office of Manford Cox and Carroll Cox. Committed to her profession, she remained with the firm for an astounding 62 years, serving with dignity, intelligence, and absolute discretion before retiring from Cox, Phillips, Weber, Tedford, Heap, and Ayres in 2014.

Outside of the office, Betty was a woman of many talents. A talented seamstress, she delighted in sewing and knitting, often crafting beautiful garments for her loved ones. Her skills in the kitchen were noteworthy, particularly when it came to baking. Whether it was her exceptional sourdough bread, Parker house rolls, or divine cookies, family and friends eagerly anticipated her culinary delights. Additionally, Betty had a green thumb, tending to her garden full of vibrant geraniums and many other flowers.

Anyone who knew her could attest to the fact that Betty had a deep love for animals, especially cats. Her adoration was such that she had her house adorned with pictures of her feline friends, and she went to the extent of walking one of her cats with a leash and halter! Despite her reserved demeanor, her daring spirit often surprised many, firmly believing the mantra, "Anything a man can do, I can do!" This spirit resonated in her actions, making her an inspiring figure to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Betty Powell was a pillar of strength, faith, and courage. Whether it was braving snowy winters with tire chains to get to work or mowing her lawn with her John Deere, she was always ready to face whatever challenge came her way. Her legacy is one of resilience, devotion, and a boundless love for her family, friends, and faith. Her walk with Jesus manifested itself in devotion to her home church, the Palestine First United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and a staple of every gathering. Though we will miss her presence, we know that she is not gone, just gone from our sight and in the loving arms of her Savior.

She is survived by her sister, LaDonna Stant; by her sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Mary Jo & Keith Holmes and Susan Bonham; and by two special nephews, Patrick & Donna Bonham (and their family) and Jonathan Bonham.

She married LeRoy Espy Powell on November 11, 1979, and he preceded her in death on March 18, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Berl & March (Tracey) Bonham; her sister, Janet Bonham (in infancy); her brothers, Larry Bonham and Roger Bonham; and her brother-in-law, Roy Don Stant.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11th, at the Palestine Cemetery, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. In honor of her love of her four-legged companions, memorials may be made to the "Crawford County Humane Society" with envelopes available at the cemetery. Richard "Dick" Vehling - January 14, 1927 - August 22, 2023

Obituary Preview: Richard "Dick" Vehling, a treasured husband, father, World War II veteran, educator, and avid collector, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023, in Robinson, IL. Born on January 14, 1927, in Indianapolis, IN, he was the son of Carl & Florence (Harden) Vehling. His early years were punctuated by a love for automobiles, a passion passed down from his father and uncle. A diligent and disciplined student, Dick graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1944 and spent a year at Butler University. But he responded to a higher call upon enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1945, a period that found him stationed in Memphis, TN, Melbourne, FL, Glenview, IL, and Norman and Purcell, OK. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Seaman First Class, his military service having earned him both the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.

Returning to civilian life, Dick applied the same discipline and steadfastness to his professional pursuits, taking his first strides in the world of work as a salesman, buyer, and department manager at L.S. Ayres & Co, a renowned retail establishment in his native Indianapolis. However, the pull of his longstanding fascination with automobiles was too great to ignore, and in 1960, he combined this passion with his entrepreneurial spirit as the owner/operator of the Vehling Texaco and Vehling 66 Service Stations.

Not one for complacency, Dick decided to further his education in the mid-1970s. He obtained a Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in 1974, followed by a Master's degree in 1978. This academic journey paved the way for a second career in education, where he combined his love for automobiles and passion for knowledge. He spent one year teaching at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette, IN, before moving on to Vincennes University, where he served as an Associate Professor in the Automotive Technology program from 1976 until his retirement in 1995.

Dick was a man of many interests and talents outside his work. He boasted an impressive collection of antiques, ranging from wooden planes to Model A and Model T parts. He was known to collect and sell cast iron pieces and tools as well. He also dabbled in woodworking and was something of a handyman, having put his skills on display over the course of numerous home repair projects.

On July 1, 1951, he married Lee Fox, and together, they filled their 72 years with love and adventure. Their shared penchant for traveling took them west to Flagstaff, AZ, and east across the beautiful landscapes of historic New England. Back home, they worshipped together alongside their Palestine First Presbyterian Church family. They, as well as anyone else blessed to know Dick, could attest to the richness of his life. His 96 years were marked by service, resilience, passion, and an unceasing faith that has finally been made sight.

Dick's memory will long be cherished by his wife, Lee Vehling, and their four children, Steve Vehling, Carla Hess (and husband Dan), Keith Vehling, and Marcia Vehling.

Immediately after high school, she began working for Leaf (now Hershey), following which she briefly lived in Oklahoma before returning home to raise her beloved daughter. Over the years, she was associated with various local establishments, including Robinson Transformer, Lawrence Sunoco, Ramsey's, and the Palestine Eagles, which doubled as a home away from home where she enjoyed good friends, good food, and good music. Sandy's last few years of employment found her at the Marathon refinery as a member of the Clean Harbors and HydroChem teams. Her strong work ethic and peculiar knack for using playful (sometimes inappropriate) nicknames to greet her peers brightened the workplace, a testament to her unique candidness and wit. Never a stranger to laughter, Sandy's humor would always shine through. Whether it was embarrassing her daughter or grandson by having their names paged over a store's intercom or reminding her friends of the brevity of life by sending them black balloons on their birthdays, she proved time and again that you shouldn't expect a dull moment with her!

Her infectious humor and straightforward approach endeared her to many, while her strength and resilience were seen in her first victorious battle against cancer, dismissing chemo's adverse effects with a strong, affirmed: "No, it won't." This fierce defiance is undoubtedly what led her to beat the disease the first time around, and the joy of ringing that bell was a happiness second only to that of being a mother and "Nana". After all, her love for her daughter, Stacie, and her grandson, Wyatt, knew no bounds, and she relished these roles with boundless joy and enthusiasm. Sandy's passing on her grandson's birthday and her funeral service on her daughter's birthday is a testament to the intrinsic link between them, a link that will keep her memory alive in their hearts forever.

While Sandy was quick to voice her opinion, she was also quick to express her love. It's this very love that will continue to live on as her lasting legacy, and her memory will forever remain a source of inspiration and comfort to us all. Rest in peace, Sandy, and thank you.

She is survived by her daughter, Stacie Nicoson (Terre Haute, IN); her grandson, Wyatt Nicoson (Terre Haute, IN); her stepson, Jason Hammond (Leesville, LA); her siblings, Rick Lawrence (Palestine, IL), Shelia Mendenhall (West York, IL), and Lori Richardson (Palestine, IL); by her nieces and nephews, Earnie & Diane Mendenhall, Derek Mendenhall, Casey & Katelyn Mendenhall, Tabatha & Craig Smith, J.R. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elgie Lawrence and Mary (Parker) Lawrence McGahey; her stepmother, Inge Lawrence; her sister, Viola Lawrence; her brother, Gordon "Gordo" Lawrence; and her longtime companion, Jeff Hammond.

Jeff Shaner - May 17, 1951 - August 09, 2023

Obituary Preview: Jeff Shaner was a pillar of Palestine.

Born and raised here, he was involved in school sports and activities all through his high school graduation in 1969. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1973 and returned to the place he knew and loved. He first worked for the local telephone company before joining his dad Roy in working at J. D. Mullen Company. In 1985, Jeff, along with parents Roy and Ann, purchased Mullen's and grew the company to what it is today.

Jeff deeply loved the community, and he showed it through his actions and heavy involvement in local events and organizations, both on his own and through Mullen's. He'd been president of Palestine Grant-in-Aid since 1998 and was a church elder, trustee, and bass in the choir (since 1982!) at the First Presbyterian Church of Palestine. He was long a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was very involved with its leadership and committees: He served on the Chamber Board of Directors many times between 1981-2020; he was on the Finance and By-Laws Committees; and he held numerous positions (President in 1983, 1st Vice President in 1982, 2nd Vice President 2005 and 2011-2012, and Treasurer 1992-2002). He served a stint with the Palestine Lions Club and was a volunteer firefighter in the mid-1980s. He ran the Palestine High School Football scoreboard clock for 30 years. He was on the 2011 Palestine Bicentennial Committee and the PHS Alumni Association for the 2019 All-School Reunion. He loved and was involved in any way he could with Palestine's Labor Day festivities and the Pioneer City Rodeo: parade announcer (for 20 years), float builder, planner, ticket salesman, fence painter, banner hanger, beer tent pourer, chute sponsor, and anything else that needed a hand.

In 1997, Jeff was named Citizen of the Year. In 2018, he received a Business Recognition Award for 70 Years of Business; and in 2023, he was inducted into the Palestine Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Jeff was an avid Illini fan (well, sometimes...), a trivia and crossword buff, a shrewd card player, and a lover of music. He owned over 45 guitars, banjos, and ukuleles, had two (and at one time three) pianos, too many harmonicas to count, and even the odd didgeridoo. He enjoyed many genres of music, and the last time he tried to write down the many concerts he'd attended throughout his life, he lost count after about 50. And he had nearly perfected his version of "Piano Man" at karaoke night at Gatter's, complete with his own harmonica accompaniment.

Most of all, Jeff loved his family and his friends and was loved fiercely in return. He died in his sleep in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, shrouded in love and care. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ann. He is survived by his loving daughters, Leslie Greskowiak and Hannah Lushin; sons-in-law, Robert Greskowiak and Whitney Lushin; grandchildren Jackson Greskowiak, Rosie Lushin, and Lily Lushin; siblings Dan Shaner, Mark Shaner, and Holly Shaner; sisters-in-law Cindy Shaner and Resa Shaner; 12 nieces and nephews (including spouses); a handful of great-nieces and nephews; cousins; and so many people he called friends. He had a quick wit (and some pretty terrible dad jokes), a contagious laugh, a sharp mind, and a generous heart. He was a loyal friend, a devoted dad, and a great man. He was, and already is, terribly missed.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dr. Karen Wakefield, and by his grandparents.

Gary completed his education at Palestine High School in 1977 and went on to earn an associate's degree from Ivy Tech, where he excelled in science and math (English and history...not so much!) His work history spanned several companies, starting at Rockwell Collins in Iowa, where he met his soon-to-be wife, Monica. Over the years, he had significant stints at James Business Machines (J&M), Leaf (and then Hershey), and Ameren, contributing his analytical mind and electrical expertise to each of these businesses. At Ameren, he also played a vital role in the union and always strived to ensure the job security of his colleagues. He then took part in the construction of Edwardsport's new power plant and worked briefly at LincolnLand Agri-Energy in Palestine before joining Lawrence Correctional Center in 2014.

Gary was known for his vibrant energy and adventurous spirit. He was the instigator of many spontaneous day trips, delighting in creating lasting memories with his children. With a love for travel that spanned the country, he audaciously took his children to 38 states before they graduated high school using the Buser way - long, grueling journeys of up to 15 hours a day! Gary enjoyed fishing on many of these vacations, from halibut fishing in Alaska to deep-sea fishing in Florida. And while these made for lasting memories, he treasured simpler times, too, like board game nights with his family. Monopoly was always his game of choice (though the way he played the role of banker was not without controversy!) Though he may or may not have playfully bent the rules in his favor on game nights, it was clear that, more often than not, his heart beat outside of himself. After all, those who knew Gary could attest to his generosity and kindness, having helped countless friends and neighbors without want of recognition. His willingness to help paired with his thoughtful intelligence to make Gary the go-to person for any query, as he was always ready with an answer after careful consideration. This contemplative, analytical approach to problems would serve his community well during his stints on the Norris Electric Cooperative Board and the Palestine CUSD #3 School Board. Throughout his 64 years, Gary was rarely without a project going or a loved one at his side, finding fulfillment in both collaboration and companionship. From running trap lines with friends before school and fighting for the good of his colleagues at Ameren to helping his daughter sort out plumbing issues at her house (he did a lot of plumbing for being an electrician) and helping his parents with all of their electrical work that needed to be done, Gary proved time and again to be a true friend and ally. His keen analytical mind, loving nature, and generous spirit greatly impacted those fortunate enough to know him. And we know, and find great comfort in knowing, that the life we remember is only gone from our sight. After all, Gary placed his trust in Jesus, who met him on Saturday with the words, "Welcome home!"

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 21st at the funeral home with his brother-in-law, Pastor Scott Mendenhall officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to two organizations near and dear to his heart: the "Ronald McDonald House" and "Riley Hospital for Children". Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Dennis was born in Evansville, Indiana on April 4, 1976 to Vickie (Alumbaugh) Perkins and the late Michael Wayne Moore. He worked at Una-Tu Pizza for 28 years. Dennis loved bicycling, and riding ATV's on the farm in southern Illinois. In his younger years he enjoyed break dancing. Dennis never met a stranger and always had a positive attitude. He adored children, especially his grandchildren. Dennis will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Dennis is survived by his daughters, Brandi Baker and Maranda Moore both of Evansville, IN; son, Tyler Smith of Evansville, IN; former wife, Tracy Smith of Evansville, IN; mother, Vickie (Alumbaugh) Perkins of Palestine, IL; sisters, Laura White (Lonnie) of Robinson, IL, Jennifer Miles (Mike) of Evansville, IN, and Angela McGuinn (Chris) of Evansville, IN; brother, Randy Moore (Jennifer) of Evansville, IN; step-mother, Theresa Moore of Evansville, IN; grandmother, Ruth Knapp of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Destin Caranahan, Emily Smith, Karter Smith, Carson Smith, and one granddaughter on the way; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Michael Wayne Moore.

His family will conduct a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29th at the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, IL.
