Christina "Tina" Higgins - June 24, 1972 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Christina "Tina" Higgins, a beacon of love and laughter whose selfless spirit animated the lives around her, took her last breath on March 9, 2024, at CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha, NE. Born on June 24, 1972, in Danville, IN, She grew up all over Crawford County and was a 1990 graduate of Oblong High School. The next chapter of her life found Tina embracing motherhood, nurturing a loving family that became the center of her universe. It was evident that her heart belonged to her family, and she embodied the axiom that family does not end with blood. Every person was kin in her eyes, and she was "Mom" to many in Nebraska, a state she's called "home" for the past two decades. Here, she blossomed into a professional photographer, capturing the whimsical beauty of life through her lens. Tina found her niche photographing the warmth of families and the serene elegance of nature. Though her vocational path was varied, her tenure as a manager at the Shopco in Albion, NE, remained the highlight of her career. Most recently, her generous spirit radiated through the aisles of Werts' G.W. grocery store in Saint Edward, NE.
An avid reader, much of her time away from work found Tina with a Kindle in hand, lost in cascading romances and lavish tales of love. In the narrative of her own life, the chapters overflowed with joy, humor, and doses of playful mischief! One of the funniest people one could know, Tina's irrepressible wit and contagious laughter were just a couple of her trademarks, as were her ever-open door and open heart. These were not merely traits but ways of life for Tina. She had the precious gift of making an ordinary moment extraordinary by simply being present. Her selflessness was legendary, prioritizing everyone else's needs before her own. To give until it hurt was her unwritten creed, and in her astounding generosity, she would give still more. No one was a stranger to Tina, for in her eyes, everyone was worthy of love, care, and respect.
To describe Tina Higgins would be to speak of unconditional love, enveloping warmth, and a sense of humor that brightened the darkest rooms. Selfless, loving, and funny-these words are but a thumbnail sketch of her vast portrait. Her story - though it may seem to have reached its end - is actually just beginning, as her spirit continues to inspire and light our own paths in the brilliant trail of her afterglow.
Tina married Jeff Higgins on June 25, 2011. Their union was a testament to partnership and mutual adoration. He remains as the guardian of their shared dreams and memories. The tapestry of Tina's life is further adorned by her children, Braiden Inboden, Alexis White, Drake White, and Alexa Strain; her stepchildren, Caleb & Briana Higgins, Lindsay Higgins, Kyle Stewart, and Curtis Higgins; her eight grandchildren; her parents, Gary Weger, Sr. and Paullette (Benton) Pethtel; her siblings, Aaron Weger and Gary Weger, Jr.; as well as several extended family members. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John & Wanda Weger and Paul & Ida Benton, and by her daughter, Callie Yzaguirre.
A graveside service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16th, at Tohill Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, IL, and will be officiated by Celebrant Curt Goodwine. Family and friends will be able to share some of their favorite memories of Tina, giving expression to what made her life such a beautiful one. Memorial contributions may be made to her memorial fund, and checks are to be made payable to "Jeff Higgins". The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Marie Edwards - July 08, 1960 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Grace Marie Edwards, 63, of Bridgeport, IL, passed away on February 18, 2024. Born on July 8, 1960, in Hammond, IN, Grace's journey through life was as vibrant and colorful as the myriad of hobbies and interests that filled her days. Her early life in the Chicagoland area was filled with the joy of music and creativity. A graduate of Burnham High School, she possessed a voice that could echo the soulful tones of Loretta Lynn, often filling her home with song and occasionally taking her talent to karaoke stages. She complemented her love for music with the occasional strum of her guitar.
Her life was a tapestry woven with the threads of other various passions. Grace was a craftswoman at heart, her skilled hands creating intricate crocheted afghans and elaborate ceramics-from festive Christmas trees to whimsical Mardi Gras masks. She was an avid collector, her shelves adorned with troll dolls, glass unicorns, Precious Moments figurines, and California Raisins characters, each piece a reflection of her eclectic and endearing personality.
The spirit of Grace was akin to that of a wild mustang-free, untamed, and with a fiery zest for life. She embodied adventure and fearlessness, whether by bringing home a blacksnake from Sam Parr State Park or riding with the wind on a Harley Davidson. Her adventurous soul found solace in the revving engines and the freedom of the open road, her last ride in Arkansas remaining a testament to her undying passion for life. Though much of Grace's years were marked by personal battles, her indomitable strength and bull-headed determination never wavered. Instead, she stood firm in her convictions and lived life on her own terms until the very end.
She is survived by her children & their spouses, Mary Soderlund (MO), Jeanne & Justin Rich (Flat Rock, IL), and Joseph Yuris (St. Francisville, IL); by her grandchildren, Steven & Sabrina Daugherty, Marissa Daugherty, Miranda & Jimmy Hyde, Jacob Rich, Hannah & Austin Zuber, John Rich, and Dominic Yuris; by several great-grandchildren; by her step-father, Nicholas "Nick" Verduzco; by her brother, Chesley Edwards III; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard "Lenny" Stanley Soderlund, on December 7, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marlene Lynn Soderlund; by her father, Chesley M. Edwards; by her mother, Marion (Mills) Verduzco; by her sisters, Patricia Ilant and Judy Brown; and by her brothers, Tommie Edwards and Terry Edwards.
A private family service will be held at a later date. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Dunlap - August 29, 1951 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Harold Dunlap, 72, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. Born on August 29, 1951, in Vincennes, IN, Harold grew up in Birds, IL, and attended school in Lawrenceville, IL. A few years after graduating from Lawrenceville High School, Harold answered his country's call by joining the U.S. Army. Stationed in Germany from 1971 to 1973, he carried the discipline and camaraderie of military life into his civilian endeavors.
Upon returning home to civilian life, Harold initially worked as a logger, showcasing his tenacious work ethic and connection to the land. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to run his own logging business before he joined forces with George Wade's logging operation. A man committed to his community, Harold served two terms as the Honey Creek Township Road Commissioner, and as a proud member of Labor Local #1280, he contributed to the development of local schools, the Lawrenceville Prison, the Hardinville City Water project, bridges, and numerous other projects. His retirement in 2008 marked the end of his official working career, but Harold never truly retired, as he continued to dedicate himself to his beloved cows.
An outdoorsman through and through, when Harold wasn't caring for his animals, he could often be found hunting, fishing at the river, or simply enjoying the tranquility of his picnic table or back porch. His deep love for horseback riding spanned several decades, and his affinity for Westerns like Gunsmoke and Lonesome Dove mirrored his own masculine and robust nature. After all, Harold Dunlap was a man's man, unapologetically himself, embodying strength and holding steadfast to his convictions. His rugged exterior belied the warmth with which he interacted with everyone, but especially his grandchildren, who quickly became the center of his universe.
Harold's life was a testament to passion, a portrait of a man who cherished his family, labored with integrity, and left an indelible mark on his community. As we bid farewell, we celebrate the enduring impact of his life's journey and the memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him.

Lavene Maxwell - September 14, 1930 - December 09, 2023

Departed: 12/09/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Lavene Maxwell, 93, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on December 9, 2023, in the comfort of her home. Vibrant and spirited until the end, Lavene's many years on this earth were a testament to her enduring love, generosity, and selfless dedication to her family and community.
Born on September 14, 1930, in Bond Township, rural Lawrence County, Lavene was the daughter of George & Bernice (Pinkstaff) Parker. As the girl who was expected to take on significant responsibilities, she developed a resilience and work ethic that became core aspects of her character. Her upbringing was unique, as she managed chores that taught her the values of dedication and excellence; whether plowing the garden or oiling rod-line posts, she undertook these tasks with resolve. Despite an unexpected family move before her senior year, Lavene graduated from Olney High School in 1950, demonstrating her adaptability and determination. Shortly thereafter, on October 21, 1950, Lavene married her high school sweetheart, Wilfred Maxwell, at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Flat Rock. This union began a lifetime of love and an unwavering partnership that lasted 73 years.
Lavene's life was a portrait of devotion, as she embraced her role as a homemaker with unparalleled passion. Lavene's heart and home were open to all - a testament to her inherently loving and kind nature. Her generosity knew no bounds; in addition to caring for her own family, she often babysat and fed children across town, creating a nurturing haven where the warmth of her kindness was felt by everyone. She channeled her love into culinary creations that will long be remembered - from her soups, beans, and cornbread to desserts like her sumptuous pineapple upside-down cake, cherry delight, and Texas sheet cake. Her cinnamon rolls, in particular, were in a league of their own. She was also a gifted seamstress and gardener, and though she performed these acts out of necessity, she was able to make time for a little fun as well. After all, she and Wilfred found joy and companionship through card games with a close-knit group of friends. Her fondness for Betty Boop was also a reflection of the spirit and charm she radiated day in and day out.
Motherhood extended naturally into her role as a grandma and great-grandma. She helped raise her first grandchild and welcomed her grandkids for extended stays without hesitation. Time and again, Lavene proved to be a pillar of strength for her family, tending to her parents and in-laws with tender care when frailty came upon them. Her home was the nucleus of family celebrations, hosting every major holiday and gathering with open arms. Lavene's impact resonated beyond her home, as the whole community of Flat Rock will fondly remember her spirited personality, which seemed to get spicier with age! She was a beacon of love and light, enriching the lives of all those fortunate enough to cross her path.
Lavene Maxwell lived for others, reflecting the best of what it means to be a matriarch, friend, and cornerstone of loving memories. As we bid her a fond farewell, let us honor her extraordinary legacy by embracing the virtues of kindness and generosity she embodied throughout her 93 wonderful years with us.
She is survived by her husband of over seven decades, Wilfred Maxwell. Her memory will also live on in her sons, Parker Maxwell, Ron & wife Brenda Maxwell, and Gary Maxwell; her son-in-law, Kevin Culp; her grandchildren, Chris & Joy Wesley, Benjamin & Stacy Maxwell, Sarah Maxwell & Chad Rice, Carson Maxwell, Ashley & David Milam, Veronica & Cody Murphy, Hillary Maxwell & Caitlyn Hodson, and Kaycee Culp; her great-grandchildren, Ashton, Austin, Aiden, Taryn, Cayson, Olivia, Kyndal, Tinley, Parker, Avery, Rylee, Ryan, Atticus, and Kinley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George & Bernice (Pinkstaff) Parker; her daughter, Janet Maxwell-Culp; her daughter-in-law, Cathy Maxwell; and her sister, Lovone Kimmel.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. Frank Keith Phillippe - September 04, 1944 - September 25, 2023

Departed: 09/25/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Frank Keith Phillippe, a quiet man fondly known for his unrelenting sense of humor and resilience of spirit, passed away on September 25, 2023, in the same place he was born 79 years earlier, Vincennes, IN. His journey began on September 4, 1944, and much of his youth was spent working on the family farm. His father started him on the tractor at the tender age of 9, and young Frank ended up all over the road trying to navigate it back home! Farming undoubtedly shaped his approach to life, both in his tenacious work ethic and in his appreciation for the outdoors. As he grew older, he also developed a passion for playing football but selflessly dropped out of high school to help his family out in the fields. That same generosity of spirit enabled him to join the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving his country as a heavy artillery mechanic.
Following his military service, Frank's mechanical skills helped him to find work with various area employers. Starting with Musgrave's Car Lot at Gordon Junction, his creatively mechanical mind was also an asset to Adams-Meyer, Miller Construction, and Riley Equipment, where he would retire as a trusted maintenance mechanic. Throughout his career, he continued working in the fields part-time as a capable farm hand for a few local farmers.
An introvert at heart, Frank found fulfillment in the tranquil quietude of the woods while hunting squirrels, coons, and deer. His love of fishing was also notable, and he cherished the occasional trip to Colorado, where he would fish for trout while surrounded by the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. Back home, he could almost always be found outside, be that on his lawn mower or in his meticulously maintained garden, which bore some of the most delicious produce you'd have the good fortune to enjoy! It wasn't just plants he nurtured, as he was known to overfeed his beloved wiener dog, Bella, and Yorkiepoo, Lily. Though he wasn't one to talk much, when he did open his mouth, you were never too sure what would come out of it! His unpredictable yarns and anecdotes were as familiar to his loved ones as his dedication to helping others, often in innovative ways that showcased his problem-solving skills. But that was just Frank, making the most of what he had to work with. As we reflect on the fullness of his 79 years with us, may we always be reminded that life is what you make it. Thank you, Frank, for making yours a good one!
He is survived by his children, Laura Phillippe, Jeff Phillippe, Tamara Dompe, and Angela Ferguson; by five grandchildren, Whitney, Savanah, Maddelyn, Jacob, and Katelynn; by his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Raelynn, Evelyn, and Larson Keith; by his brother & sister-in-law, Gary Dean & Debbie Phillippe; by his sister, Ada Correll; by his sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Phyllis & Mike McCammon; by his brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Brian & Marsha Rich; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He married Pamela Jo Rich on August 1, 1969, and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. & Freda Maxine (Felton) Phillippe, and his daughter-in-law, Robin Phillippe.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30th, at Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation and be held at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor J.D. Branson officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the combined units of the U.S. Army, the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the "VFW Transportation Fund", with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Micheal Dean Wesley - November 28, 1944 - September 08, 2023

Departed: 09/08/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Micheal Dean Wesley of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on September 8, 2023, at Willow Manor in Vincennes, IN. Born November 28, 1944, in Honey Creek Township, Mike spent his formative years exploring and growing up in Flat Rock and eventually graduated from Robinson High School.
After working at the Ettelbrick Shoe Factory for a time, Mike spent 33 years ensuring the grounds and facilities of Lincoln Grade School were well-maintained. Known for his ornery side, he often injected humor into his role and is fondly remembered for his occasional harmless pranks on the students. He was also a committed volunteer fireman for the Flat Rock Fire Department for over 25 years, demonstrating his dedication to the community. He was just as committed to his beloved St. Louis Cardinals as he epitomized the meaning of a true fan. Despite his few but cherished visits to the Busch Stadium, he insisted he could enjoy the game just as well from home, meticulously recording every statistic of his beloved Redbirds. His love for sports also extended to his active participation, from his younger years playing fast-pitch softball to umpiring for his grandchildren's games.
Beyond the grandstands and the baseball diamond, Mike found solace in the tranquility of nature, passing the twilight years of his life fishing in little ponds, notably Ryan's. Hunting was another outdoor pursuit he enjoyed, primarily hunting quail and a little bit of everything. He also had an uncanny knack for mushroom hunting, picking them by the hundreds, and as was his nature, keeping track of his finds.
Though he was a quiet man by nature, Mike always preferred the company of his family and often found himself at his children's houses. His bond with each family member was evident, but he was especially close with his grandchildren, who never wanted for anything when he was around! As we take a step back and look at the fullness of Mike's 78 years with us, it's hard not to see a robust picture of steadfastness, honesty, and, of course, a stubborn streak that made him all the more endearing to those who loved him. His absence will be deeply felt because he was deeply treasured. Thanks for the memories, Mike.
He is survived by his children & their spouses, Kevin & Cristel Wesley, Ryan & Ashli Wesley, and Carrie & John Rodich; by his grandchildren, Cristen, Taylor, Shania, Hannah, Austin, Addison, Addilyn, Colsyn, and Eastyn; by one great-granddaughter, Charlie; and by several nieces and nephews. He married Carolyn Sue "Susie" Taylor on April 28, 1968, and she preceded him in death on September 4, 1993. He was also preceded in death by parents, Fred Wesley & Elsie Jo (Rich) Wesley; by his siblings, John F., Steve, and Carol Ann Wesley; and by his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Hank & Laura Mae Taylor.
A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12th, at the funeral home, with Pastor J.D. Branson officiating. Burial will follow in the Tohill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the "Susie Wesley Memorial Library", with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Cindy Weger - December 18, 1953 - September 04, 2023

Departed: 09/04/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Cindy Weger, a vibrant and cherished member of the community, passed away on September 4, 2023, in the warmth and comfort of her home in Robinson, IL. Born December 18, 1953, in Fort Campbell, KY, her childhood was mostly spent in Pana and Flat Rock, IL. Cindy would go on to grace Robinson High School's halls before graduating in 1971. Not long after, she married the love of her life, Tom Weger, on her 18th birthday, a union that blossomed over 51 beautiful years, defined by devotion, laughter, and not a small amount of ribbing!
Cindy started her professional journey at L.S. Heath, later transitioning to Walmart and City Hall. Yet, her industrious and entrepreneurial spirit led her to buy the old Argus building to establish The Argus House reception hall. Hosting innumerable celebrations and gatherings over its three years, Cindy warmly handed over the establishment to her daughter, Jodi, who transformed it into the popular beauty salon Hello Gorgeous. After this venture, Cindy added her own sparks to Sparks Floral, contributing her creative flair to the business's growth. Simply put, Cindy was a force of nature when it came to crafting, decorating, and all things fashion. Never more in her element than when decorating her home with her sizeable Pioneer Woman collection or creating wreaths and centerpieces, Cindy was known to give generously, sharing her handcrafted gems with family and friends alike. A lover of travel, she journeyed to the Caribbean on a number of cruises with her girlfriends, but her favorite trip found them on the rippling seas of Alaska. A couple of times a year, she and Tom would make the pilgrimage to Tunica, MS, where she could be found manning the slot machines for hours on end. Her sense of adventure also found joy closer to home, namely, Red Hill, where her family would set up camp and spend quality time together enjoying the great outdoors. Back home, she spent innumerable hours out in her flower garden and was particularly fond of hostas (to the delight of the many deer she'd curse off her property!)
For Cindy, the world was her runway, and fashion was her first language. Her collection of clothes, shoes, and jewelry bore witness to her love of shopping. Always the life of any gathering, she loved making people laugh and was not shy of being the center of attention. If trips to Walmart were any indication, she was everyone's friend, as her personality was impossible to ignore. Her most profound virtue was her selflessness; she always put people before herself, ensuring others were taken care of. This selfless love made it hard for her to be the one receiving help in the twilight of her life. May the light of Cindy Weger continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew her, and may her memory serve as a beautiful testament to the power of grace, generosity, and grit.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Weger; by her children & their spouses, Misty & Robert Roy, Jodi & Dale Mullinix, and Justin Weger & fiancée Alissa Simmons; by her grandchildren, Tomy Jo & husband Andrew Ochs, Kori Calvert, Chance Mullinix, Dane Mullinix, Rylan King, Jalisa Dunlap, and Ash Lanctot; by her great-grandson, Jack Ochs; by her siblings, Charlie Bellinger and Robert & Judy Healy; and by her nieces & nephews, Jacqui & Andrew Brown and Ross & Amanda Parks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack & Betty (Waldrop) Bellinger.
It was her wish to be cremated, and a private family service will be held at a later date. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of these arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to "Riley Hospital for Children".

Wanda's hands were rarely still, as she was skilled in sewing, embroidery, and crocheting, often creating beautiful gifts for her loved ones. Her creativity extended to crafting cross-stitch and plastic canvas projects and putting together jigsaw puzzles.
Wanda was a proud member of the "Flat Rock Girls," a group of friends who gathered for a luncheon on the first Wednesday of every month. This tradition was a highlight for Wanda, who always looked forward to the camaraderie and laughter shared among friends.

Harrison Daniel Sipes - June 23, 1952 - June 25, 2023

Departed: 06/25/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Harrison Daniel "Dan" Sipes, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in rural Flat Rock, IL, on June 25, 2023, just two days after his 71st birthday. Born in Caraway, AR, on June 23, 1952, Dan leaves behind a wealth of memories, stories, and laughter for everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Vickie (Shriver), whom he married on June 17, 1989. He is also remembered by his children, Phillip & wife Ladonna Sipes and Crissy Sipes; his former son-in-law, Duane Grinderslev; his stepchildren & their spouses, Robert & Andrea Nicholson and Misty & Sam Ballard; his grandchildren, Amber, Cody, Holden, and Paige; his step-grandchildren, Jessica, Austin, William, and Ethan; and several great-grandchildren. Dan's memory will also be cherished by his siblings, Lenita Knudsen, Regina Wilkey, Karen Meredith, and Jeff Sipes, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene & Bobbie Sipes, and his younger brother, Mike.
Throughout his life, Dan worked as a truck driver, a career that spanned decades and took him all across the United States. His time on the road was a treasure trove of stories, and he loved recounting these adventures to his spellbound audiences. Though Dan wasn't a fan of driving along the crowded and bustling east coast, that didn't dull his enthusiasm for exploring America.
When he wasn't on the road, Dan relished spending time with his family and pursuing a number of hobbies. A passionate fisherman, he often had a fish-or a Natural Light, or a grandkid-within arm's reach. The proud owner of a '66 Chevy, Dan spent innumerable hours under the hood of his car while music by Faron Young filled his garage. This informal sanctum became the family gathering spot, where generations swapped stories, shared laughter, and made memories. He also cherished those times spent with them around a bonfire or gathered around the dinner table, enjoying his wife Vickie's delectable home-cooked meals, be it meatballs, ribs, or catfish.
Though he loved his whole family, it was evident that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren had his heart. Often addressed affectionately as "Pawpaw," Dan made sure his little ones never wanted for anything and spoiled them nearly rotten. After all, their happiness meant the world to him. Because Dan Sipes showered those closest to him with unwavering love and support, his passing will leave an immeasurable void in the lives of his family and friends. But as we reflect on this dear man's life and mourn his loss, let us also remember that this legacy of love will continue to shape and inspire generations to come. Rest easy, Dan, and thank you.
A private family service will be held at a later date, and Dan will be buried in the McDowell Cemetery in Dwight, IL. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of these arrangements.

Karen Kay "Katie" Benton - February 18, 1950 - June 07, 2023

Departed: 06/07/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Karen Kay "Katie" Benton, 73, of Robinson, IL, passed away on June 7, 2023, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. Born on February 18, 1950, in Oneida, KY, Katie spent her 73 years touching the hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to be in her presence, leaving behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and laughter.
In her early years, Katie grew up in a rural area of Lee County, KY, where the Rogers family home was forged by discipline, love, and devotion. Her upbringing played a significant role in shaping the wonderful person she would become, as she continued to carry the values of love and strength throughout her life. Strongly bonded to her family, as a teenager, Katie moved to Middletown, OH, to live with and help care for her grandparents, and later graduated from Middletown High School in 1968. From there, Katie built a life around caregiving and serving others. Though she worked for Crawford Memorial Hospital for a number of years, it was through homemaking and babysitting that she found her calling in life. In this way, she provided a nurturing and welcoming environment for her immediate family and the numerous nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children who considered Katie to be a second mother. Katie's interests were diverse and also deeply rooted in her love for her family and friends. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her loved ones, but lately, she also appreciated the quiet gratification of solving crosswords and working puzzle books. That's not to say she didn't know how to let her hair down! Katie's adventurous side was on full display every time she hopped on the back of her brother's motorcycle!
Katie's journey on this earth may have ended, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. As we celebrate this remarkable life-a life marked by courage and an unwavering willingness to face every challenge head-on-we can draw upon her resolute nature and boundless love as inspiration to face our own trials with perseverance and to love others unconditionally. So let us embody that same selfless devotion to others that was so deeply woven into every fiber of her being. With every act of kindness, generosity, and love that we perform, may we keep Katie's memory alive, ensuring that her legacy will live on for many generations to come.
She is survived by her son, Noah Adam Benton; by her brothers & sister-in-law, Raymond "Junior" & Lona Rogers (Mt. Sterling, KY) and Dan Rogers (Robinson, IL); by her sisters, Janice Smyth (Mt. Sterling, KY) and Shirley Bellamy (Stanton, KY); by her sister-in-law, Rose Rogers  (Jacksonville, TN) along with several nieces and nephews; and several cherished friends, including Sheila Ducommon and Catherine Richeson.
She married Chester Lee "Chuck" Benton on April 30, 1983, and he preceded her in death on September 29, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Raymond & Allene (Stephens) Rogers; and by her siblings, Barbara Mays, Philip Rogers, Phyllis Rogers, David Rogers, Ronnie Rogers, and Tom Rogers.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 16th, at the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, with her friend, Pastor Sheila Ducommon, officiating. Memorials may be made to her family, with checks made payable to "Dan Rogers". Envelopes will be available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Troy Love - February 02, 1972 - June 02, 2023

Departed: 06/02/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Troy Love, a man whose bellowing laugh could be heard from miles away, quietly and unexpectedly left this world on June 2, 2023. He was born on February 2, 1972, in Vincennes, IN, the son of William L. "Bill" Love & Paula Jeanette "Sue" Love. A couple of weeks before his birth, Troy's father, Bill, was involved in a bus-train collision, and he succumbed to his injuries soon after Troy and his twin brother Todd were born. Troy was also preceded in death by his brother, Billy Love, and his grandparents, James "Junior" & Mildred Love, and Sherman & Paula Weger. Such adversity never managed to dampen Troy's spirits, and he navigated life with a unique blend of infectious humor, arms-wide-open generosity, and the kind of curious energy that sparked countless adventures (and, perhaps, just a few misadventures).
Following his graduation from Robinson High School in 1990, Troy charted a course through adulthood that led him from the oil fields to the pottery to the Crawford County Sheriff's Department (a period of time filled with those infamous late-night squad car sneak-ups!!!) and finally, to a successful general contracting business. Along the way, Troy devoted considerable energy to helping others, lending a hand to anyone in need, and supporting his favorite watering hole, the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132, by helping raise its new building. So devoted was he to the Legion that he became president of the Sons of the American Legion Post #132. On August 15, 2020, Troy married Melinda (Ham), who survives him and will undoubtedly cherish memories of their short but magical time together. As a father to Chance and MacKenzie Love, Troy bequeathed to his children a passion for life, a generous heart, and a deep love of country music, good food, and the great outdoors-particularly when traversed on a muddy four-wheeler or with a cold Busch in hand!
Troy's many friends and family members will no doubt swap stories of the legendary prankster, remembering laughter that never failed to bring a smile to their faces, practical jokes that sometimes teetered on the edge of sanity, and the relentless curiosity and energy that propelled him to explore everything from the insides of a broken-down engine to the outer reaches of the Grit channel's film catalog.
Whether he was cooking up his famous biscuits and gravy, gaming before video gaming was cool, or displaying an offbeat (and possibly age-inappropriate) immaturity, Troy Love lived life to its fullest and inspired those around him to do the same. Generous, friendly, spirited: these are the words the world will remember him by, but to those who knew him best, Troy was simply an unforgettable force of nature.
His wife, Melinda, and children, Chance and MacKenzie, could never forget this once-in-a-lifetime soul, nor could his mother, Sue Weger; his step-father, Randy Weger; his brothers Tim (and his wife Christine) and Todd Love; nor his sister, Trisha Weger. Numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members will long cherish memories of a life marked by an enduring passion for country living, a fearless drive toward adventure, and a selfless generosity that reminded us all that it's not what you get out of life that matters, but what you give.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8th, at the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Flat Rock American Legion Post #132". Envelopes will be available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Ray Camden - January 17, 1946 - May 06, 2023

Departed: 05/06/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Roger Ray Camden, 77, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on May 6, 2023, in Robinson, IL. Born in Nebraska City, NE, on January 17, 1946, Roger grew up in the Flat Rock area and graduated from Robinson High School in 1964. Shortly after, he bravely chose to serve his country during the Vietnam War by joining the United States Navy. From 1964 to 1968, Roger demonstrated immense courage and dedication to his nation as a part of the USS Ticonderoga crew, skillfully working on boilers as an engine mate to ensure the ship operated smoothly.
After proudly serving in the Navy, Roger returned home to partner with his father, Arl Camden, and his brothers to start a logging company, Camden Logging. Roger's determination and hard work helped make the venture successful, setting a strong foundation for the family business. In 1980, he transitioned to a career as an electrician before joining Montgomery Township as an employee. Unfortunately, Roger had to go on disability in 1990, but his spirit and resilience never wavered.
Throughout his life, Roger was dedicated to his community. A lifetime member of the Robinson VFW and the Flat Rock American Legion, he never forgot the importance of serving others and honoring his fellow veterans. As a devout member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Roger's faith guided him through both good times and hardships.
Roger married the love of his life, Connie (Ducharme), on April 4th, 1981. The couple made countless memories during their forty years of marriage, always cherishing their moments together. Unfortunately, Connie preceded Roger in death on February 27, 2021. Roger's father, Arl Camden, also predeceased him.
Family meant everything to Roger. He is survived by his children, John Camden (Flat Rock, IL), David & Jennifer Camden (Bridgeport, IL), and Kristy Camden (Palestine, IL); his grandchildren, Ashlei Williams, Marissa Christine, Jacob Christine (all of Palestine, IL), Dylan, Logan, and Brayden Camden (all of Bridgeport, IL); his great-grandchild, Brooklynn Brannon (Palestine, IL); his mother, Glenna Camden (Robinson, IL); and his brothers, Gene Camden (Bridgeport, IL) and Doug Camden & his significant other, Rhonda (Robinson, IL). Countless extended family members will also cherish his memory.
His loved ones could all attest to the fact that Roger's interests were as varied as they were compelling. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time at the river with family and friends, where he would run nets and camp. On numerous occasions, the fish he caught ended up being served at fish fries, creating unforgettable gatherings for everyone involved. He was also an avid coon hunter, a pastime he enjoyed for many years. A voracious reader, Roger was particularly fond of Western novels, with Louis L'Amour's works earning a special place on his bookshelf. His thirst for knowledge didn't end with literature, as he also enjoyed watching the History Channel, eagerly desiring to learn something new every day.
As friendly as he was intelligent, Roger was known to have a quick wit and a caring heart. He would often be found joking around with those he loved and offering help where needed. He also devoted precious moments to spending time with his beloved grandchildren, cherishing each memory made. But his grandchildren weren't the only beneficiaries of this dear man's time. After all, Roger Ray Camden brought light and laughter to all those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we remember and celebrate his life, let us honor the mark he made on our hearts by carrying forward his legacy of love, laughter, and service to others.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th, at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, rural Palestine, IL, with Pastor Kyle Bailey officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the combined units of the U.S. Navy, the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. In honor of this veteran, memorial contributions may be made to either "Heritage Shelter Care" in Hutsonville or to the Robinson "VFW Transportation Fund". Envelopes will be available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Adrienne Allyn (Polgar) McDonald - June 15, 1980 - April 03, 2023

Departed: 04/03/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Adrienne Allyn (Polgar) McDonald, 42, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away unexpectedly at her home in the early morning hours of April 3, 2023. She was born on June 15, 1980, in Lawrenceville, IL, the daughter of Daniel & Susan (Rodgers) Polgar, both of whom survive. She is also survived by her daughter and the apple of her eye, Violet Odessa McDonald, and her father, Chuck McDonald; her sister, Emberlyn Polgar, and her partner, Jason Price; her aunt, Elaine Rodgers; her cousin, Kensey Lyons, and her children, Gabe, Sam, and Darcy; and her half-uncle, Theodore J. Polgar. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Kenneth & Edith Rodgers; her paternal grandparents, Theodore & Luella Polgar; and her uncles, Larry Rodgers and Mark Rodgers.
Adrienne's love of music started from an early age. At the age of three, she was singing Italian art songs during her mom's voice lessons. Her first performance was at LTC as one of the orphans in Annie. She was in countless musicals, operas, concerts, and other performances, including: The Sound of Music, The King and I, Camelot, Oklahoma, West Side Story, Crazy for You, The Music Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Pasta and Puccini, The Marriage of Figaro, The Mikado and The Magic Flute. Adrienne graduated from Robinson High School with the class of 1998. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana State University in 2002 and went on to achieve her Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Western Illinois University in 2004. She worked as a preschool teacher at the St. Francisville Christian Academy for a short time after graduation until she became the Music Minister and Youth Minister at First Christian Church in Vincennes, IN. She loved working with and teaching the youth about God and His Son, Jesus. She worked there until right before her daughter's birth in 2010.
Her life took a drastic change eight days after Violet's birth on November 2. At that time, Adrienne experienced cardiac arrest in her home and was resuscitated through the efforts of the local EMTs and the Flat Rock Fire Department. Before her heart started again, Adrienne experienced an out-of-body experience, where she saw loved ones who had already passed, angels, and Jesus Christ. This experience caused her to believe that she had a purpose for returning to her body, and she was no longer afraid of death. Through the grace of God, Adrienne then traveled the road of recovery for the past 12 ½ years. She worked with courage and grace to regain her ability to move her body and communicate with those around her. Many volunteers helped her with stretching, standing, walking, and communicating. Adrienne especially appreciated visiting with the volunteers who brought love and support into her home while offering their much-needed services. Her favorite therapies included horse riding, speech, and biking. Going to church and talking with her church family also rated at the top of Adrienne's list.
But at the very top of Adrienne's list was spending time with her daughter, Violet, who was the most important person in Adrienne's life. Violet brought joy and fun into Adrienne's life. Over the past 12 ½ years, Adrienne, Violet, sister Emberlyn and parents Susan and Dan embarked on many adventures, which included three trips to Disney, a trip to San Antonio, TX, and trips to the beaches in Michigan and Florida. She loved experiencing God's creation in zoos, botanical gardens, and butterflies. Adrienne also enjoyed listening to clean comedians. It was an incredible joy to hear her laugh at their jokes. Just this past January, the entire family made a trip to Indianapolis to attend a Brian Regan comedy concert. It is a very special memory.
Adrienne exuded love and light and grace. She did not dwell on anger or discouragement about her challenges but rather focused on improving and communicating love and kindness to those around her. She made every person feel important and special. Adrienne would want everyone she loves to join her in heaven one day by accepting the loving grace of Jesus Christ.
A visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7th, at South Union Church in Flat Rock. A funeral service will immediately follow and be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, with Pastor Eric Hankins officiating. Burial will be in the Tohill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to "New Hebron Christian School", with envelopes available at the church. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.

Laura June (Wilson) Ayres - February 13, 1935 - April 03, 2023

Departed: 04/03/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Laura June (Wilson) Ayres, 88, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on April 3, 2023, in the comfort of her home. Born on February 13, 1935, in Palestine, IL, Laura June devoted nearly nine decades to her home, her family, and her God. She began her educational journey at Frog Pond, a one-room schoolhouse, before attending Palestine Grade School (5th and 6th Grades) and Flat Rock Grade School (7th and 8th Grades). After spending her freshman year at Flat Rock High School, she transferred to Robinson High School, where she graduated in 1952. On September 19th of that year, she married Alan Luther Ayres. Laura June and Alan's love story spanned more than seven decades, and together, they raised a family on their small farm, surrounded by the simple beauty of their rural Illinois home.
Laura June embraced every aspect of life as a full-time homemaker, creating a nurturing environment for their children, Danny and Brenda. When they were younger, the Ayres family embarked on numerous summer vacations, adventures leading them through many states and parks, making memories that would fill countless photo albums and sights that would fill their minds with wonder as they took in the tapestry of God's creation. An artist herself, Laura June found solace and inspiration in transforming the images of nature into sketches and drawings for her family. Many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren inherited her creative gift and continue to honor her memory through their own artwork. Laura June was also an avid reader, diving into books on religion and poring over the Bible with a passion that inspired all who met her. Her deep well of Biblical knowledge served her well as a Sunday school teacher at the Flat Rock United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime and active member. Here, she was faithful in the big things, like volunteering for Vacation Bible School, but she was also faithful in the seemingly small (but eternally important) thing of intercessory prayer. Known to many as a "prayer warrior," Laura June took everything to her Lord and never hesitated to lean on her faith when times got tough. Her unwavering trust in her Heavenly Father will remain for us a beacon of light, illuminating and encouraging us to carry on her legacy with that same faith, hope, and love that saturated her life, a life that, by the grace of God, will never end!
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Alan Ayres (Flat Rock, IL); her son & daughter-in-law, Danny & Brenda Ayres (Terre Haute, IN); her daughter & son-in-law, Brenda & Daniel McCoy (Palestine, IL); her grandchildren & their spouses, Brandie & Les Hamm (West Terre Haute, IN), Steven & Danyelle Ayres (Flat Rock, IL), and Megan & Sean Whelan (Belleville, IL); her six great-grandchildren, Leah Hamm, Isaac Ayres, Logan Hamm, Allison Ayres, Adelaide Whelan, and Elodie Whelan; her sister, Mary Mumaw (Conroe, TX); her brother & sister-in-law, David & Ester Wilson (Dallas, TX); as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy & Nellie (Hutchinson) Wilson; her brother, Nile Dean Wilson (in infancy); her brother & sister-in-law, William & Nora Wilson; her brother-in-law, Keith Mumaw; and her nephews, Rick Wilson and Chris Mumaw.
A time of visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 8th, at the Flat Rock United Methodist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow and be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church, with Pastor Nathan Jeffries officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either the "Flat Rock United Methodist Church" or to the "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital". Memorial envelopes will be available at the church. James "Jimmy" Brown - October 23, 1986 - January 09, 2023

Departed: 01/09/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: James "Jimmy" Brown, 36, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on January 9, 2023, following a brief but valiant fight with cancer. He was born on October 23, 1986, in Robinson, IL, the son of Robert & Sherri Brown. He grew up in the rural Flat Rock area, where he would develop a lifelong passion for animals. He held a particular fondness for pigs and horses, the latter of which he enjoyed riding throughout his adolescence. The pond out in front of the Brown home afforded a young Jimmy innumerable hours with a rod and reel in his hand. In fact, much of his 36 years were spent outdoors. Though he briefly worked for Bradford Supply after graduating from Robinson High School in 2006, most of his career found him out in God's creation, laboring in the oil fields. Anyone who knew Jimmy could speak to his incredible work ethic, and this includes his colleagues at ZF TRW in Marshall, IL, where he was employed at the time of his passing.
Though he often kept his nose to the grindstone, he knew how to blow off steam now and again. Many a Friday and Saturday evening found him playing Texas Hold 'Em with his oilfield buddies. He also cherished time spent with his family, who will long remember Jimmy as a loving, caring guy who would do anything to help when he could.
Left behind to mourn his passing are his partner, Kelly Slussar-Brown; his step-kids, Cody, Alex, and Joie; his grandson, Jayce; his dad & step-mom, Robert "Bob" Brown & Becky Newlin; his mother & step-dad, Sherri & Ronald Bone; his grandma, Barbara Brown; his siblings & their spouses, Andy & Dawn Brown, Charles Brown, Stephanie & Mike Miller, and Bobbie Lynn Brown; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandpa, James Brown; his maternal grandparents, Kenneth Osborn & Marylan Osborn Flenner; his nephew, Jamie Brown; as well as many aunts, uncles, and great-grandparents.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21st, at the Tohill Cemetery, rural Flat Rock, with Pastor Eric Hankins officiating. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of these arrangements.
Following the graveside, friends and family are invited to continue remembering and celebrating Jimmy's life at South Union Church.
In honor of his love for animals, memorial contributions may be made to the "Crawford County Humane Society" and envelopes will be available at the cemetery.

Christy Fox - January 15, 1959 - January 01, 2023

Departed: 01/01/2023 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Christy Fox, 63, of Lawrenceville, IL, died unexpectedly on January 1, 2023, at her home in Lawrenceville. She was born on January 15, 1959, in Lawrenceville, to James "Bud" & Norma (Padgett) Spencer, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jim Spencer, and her sister, Jean Lankford.
She is survived by her husband, Chris Fox of Vincennes, IN; her daughter, Logan Wease (and her family, which includes Christy's granddaughters, Launa and Laynee) of Lawrenceville, IL; her son, Brandon Riggs of Oxford, NC; her siblings, Scott Spencer (and his family), Neil Griggs (and her family), Tom Spencer (and his family), and Marc Spencer (and his family), all of Lawrenceville IL; and by many beloved nieces, and nephews.
Christy was, by any and every account, a bright soul. Her smile could light up any room she was in, and she was one of those who always looked at the cup as half-full. This sunny disposition was, no doubt, borne out of a beautiful childhood, a period of time when she developed many friendships that she held until the very end. Her many friends could attest that Christy had a good time no matter where she went and truly enjoyed her 63 years with us. More than anything else in her life, it was evident that Christy cherished time spent with her loved ones, especially her daughter and granddaughters. The love she shared with them will continue to live on as her lasting legacy for as long as they have the breath to speak her name. A celebration of her life will eventually be held and will be announced at a later date. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Logan and her girls, with checks made payable to "Logan Wease". Checks to Logan may also be sent to: Goodwine Funeral Homes 303 E Main St Robinson, IL 62454

James Pat Burnett - February 18, 1954 - November 29, 2022

Departed: 11/29/2022 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: James Pat Burnett, 68, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on November 29, 2022. He was born on February 18, 1954, in Iraan, TX, the son of Floyd Errol Burnett & Billie Jean (Hagan) Burnett. He grew up in the Martinsville, IL, area and was a 1972 graduate of Martinsville High School. He would go on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1976-1979. We are thankful for the selflessness of spirit that enabled this dear man to take up his country's call for the sake of liberty and justice for all. Back home, he found employment with Union Carbide for a time but eventually made his way to the Robinson Correctional Center, where he worked from 1999 until retiring in 2016. His co-workers (and really, anyone else who knew him) could speak to his love of the St. Louis Cardinals. Over the years, Pat made many treks to Busch Stadium to watch the Redbirds play, and he was even able to take in the unique experience of watching them win the 2011 World Series in person. These outings weren't complete without a delicious meal at a restaurant like Olive Garden or Red Lobster (or anywhere else that served crab!)
It was evident that Pat Burnett was a people person. He refused to let you be a stranger and loved nothing more than spending time with others. This especially held true when it came to his family, as he was a devoted husband, caring stepdad, proud grandfather, and a doting great-grandfather. However, the most important title he held was that of "Christian". We hold fast to our hope that, by the grace of God, Pat's 68 years with us were but the beginning in light of eternal life.
On July 5, 1986, he married Diane Hodson, and she survives. Keith Leon Tohill - February 25, 1938 - November 20, 2022

Departed: 11/20/2022 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Keith Leon Tohill, 84, of rural Flat Rock, IL, passed away on November 20, 2022, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL. He was born on February 25, 1938, in Montgomery Township, rural Crawford County, IL, the son of Herman Kenneth & Alice M. (Blaker) Tohill, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Rita (Johnson) on June 18, 1993, and she preceded him in death on September 2, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Ella Tohill and by his great-grandsons, Parker Wayne Courtney and Jaythen Wayne Courtney
He is survived by his children, Cindy Houghtaling, Orman "Okie" & Mary Tohill, and Kevin & Kim Tohill; his grandchildren, Kyle & Laura York, Zeb & Rachel York, Zach & Kendra Tohill, Candice & Amos Young, Gage & Jessica Tohill, Darcee & Adam Dunlap, Kendra & Justin Courtney, Cora & Rich Nidey, and Johnny Shook; his 14 great-grandchildren; his brother, Kenneth Tohill; his sister, Vivian & Wendell Reinbold; several nieces and nephews; his best friend, Richard Wesley; and by his buddy and beloved cat, Oreo.
A 1956 graduate of Palestine High School, Keith soon found himself working in the oil fields. A producer since 1958, anyone who knew him could attest to the fact that the oil fields were his life and are now his legacy. He considered most hobbies to be a distraction from his work, though he found great joy in driving to Terre Haute with Richard Wesley. Together, they would peruse through the local junkyard, hunting for treasures and bargains that he could use out in the field. He built such a relationship with the junkyard employees that they regularly set aside items they knew he would be drawn to! Each trip could only be complete with lunch at Grandma Vera's Cafe and a pitstop at the Dairy Queen in Marshall.
Back home, he was a longtime member of the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #348, and this gun enthusiast was also, (unsurprisingly), a proud member of the NRA. Though Keith Tohill was a simple man, he was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A time of visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 27th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. Masonic funeral rites will be accorded at 6:00 p.m. following the visitation on Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 28th, at the funeral home, with Rev. Gene Beard, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Tohill Cemetery. In honor of Keith's fight with the disease, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association ("LBDA"), with envelopes available at the funeral home.

James Delton Duffield, Jr. - August 18, 1948 - November 16, 2022

Departed: 11/16/2022 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: James Delton Duffield, Jr., 74, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on November 16, 2022, in the comfort of his home. He was born August 18, 1948, in Murphysboro, IL, the son of James "Duffy" Duffield, Sr. & G. Imogene (Baseden) Duffield. He grew up in Murphysboro and would go on to serve his country in the U.S. Army at the height of the Vietnam War. After bravely serving two tours in Vietnam, Jim was honorably discharged, only to re-enlist shortly thereafter, beginning a career in the military that found him and his young family stationed in Missouri, Germany (twice), Louisiana, and California before he finally retired in 1989.
Wanting to move back to the Midwest to be close to family, Jim and his wife, Jean, took a ruler to a map and found an area roughly half the distance between his father and her parents. So, in October of 1990, they moved east of Flat Rock, where Jim soon established his hobby farm. Over the years, this "animal whisperer" owned and raised everything from doves, chickens, and geese to pot belly pigs, hair sheep, and pygmy goats (the latter of which were soon let go, as they had taught the sheep how to jump the fence!) He not only had a gift with animals but with plants as well. He had such a green thumb that he once found a tomato plant growing out of a crack in the asphalt behind a Motel 6 and was able to keep it going for eight bountiful years before a neighbor mowed it down! Needless to say, his farm brought forth delicious produce that he was then able to incorporate into many delicious dishes. He was one of those rare souls who could create something tasty, nay, mouth-watering, without the guidance of a recipe.
Though he stayed busy on the farm, Jim also maintained a full-time job at Leaf/Hershey, where he worked on the Heath line from 1991 until retiring in 2013. The many friends he made there could attest to the fact that the guy was a hard-headed, ornery cuss! But oh, was he funny. Jim owned a very droll sense of humor that brought joy and laughter into our lives. These happy moments were like seeds that were sowed into our hearts. We are thankful that they have now borne fruit in our memories of this dear man, who will never be forgotten.
He married Jean Eppley on April 22, 1972, and she survives. He is also survived by his sons & daughters-in-law, Steven & Katie Duffield and Timothy & Tammy Duffield; his grandchildren, Gia & Mak Sullivan, Ernest Duffield, Lauren Duffield, Liliana Duffield, Destiny & Devin Dunham, Faith Bennett, and Dustin Bennett; his great-grandchildren, Katterina Bennett, Josephine Bennett, and Mateo Sullivan; his step-sisters, Susan Darmstatter and Erica & Doug Wheeler; his half-sister, Sara & Micah Provoe; his nephews and nieces, Nathan Duffield, Anthony Eppley, Christopher Eppley, Callie Wheeler, Carly Wheeler, Olivia Lawrence, Gabby Bowin, and Sterling Lawrence; as well as a host of extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gary Duffield; his step-brother, Danny Darmstatter; his parents-in-law, Paul & Ruth Eppley; and his brothers-in-law, Wayne Eppley and Lee Eppley.
A time of visitation will be held from 12:30-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. During the service, there will be a time for family and friends to reflect on memories shared with this one-of-a-kind soul. For those unable to attend, a recording of the service will eventually be available on Goodwine Funeral Homes' Facebook page or at www.goodwinefuneralhomes.com/live-stream/live-stream.
Memorials may be made to either the "American Heart Association" or the "American Lung Association", with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Sharon Lynn Wesley - September 25, 1939 - October 28, 2022

Departed: 10/28/2022 (Flat Rock)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Lynn Wesley, 83, of Flat Rock, IL, passed away on October 28, 2022, at Robinson Rehab and Nursing. She was born on September 25, 1939, in Flat Rock, the daughter of Ralph Miller & Erma (Weger) Miller, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Bette Dixon and Patricia Hotsenpiller and her brother, Robert "Bob" Miller.
She is survived by her children, Denise & Lyle Crane and Steve & Tammy Wesley; by her grandchildren & their spouses, Jason & Anne Watts and April Wilcox; by her great-grandchildren, Ayla Watts, Remington Spencer, Lexie Watts, Liam Watts, and Cannon Wilcox; by her step-granddaughter, Paige McCoy; by her sister & brother-in-law, Carolyn Sue & Dick Kent; by her brother & sister-in-law, Terry & Irma Miller; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A 1957 graduate of Flat Rock High School, Sharon would go on to find work with L.S. Heath, where she proudly worked as a line operator for 30 years before retiring in 2001, but not before making many dear friends. They could attest to her hard work and dedication and would speak of Sharon as gentle and soft-spoken in the workplace. Time at home often found her in her kitchen, whipping up her famous apple salad or angel food cake. The owner of the world's biggest sweet tooth, Sharon's diet wasn't complete without pecan pie or butter pecan ice cream! When she wasn't in the kitchen, she busied herself by working on word searches and puzzles. These provided her with countless hours of entertainment, as did watching game shows and, of course, listening to RFD. That's not all she listened to, however, as she was known to make her way to K.E. Newell's to enjoy some good old-fashioned bluegrass music every Thursday night! In the twilight years of her life, she found a church family at Grace United Methodist Church. They, as well as anyone else fortunate enough to know her, could each speak to her sassy nature and will remember with fondness that crooked smile that said "I love you" without having to say a word. And yet, she never failed to express the love she had for her family. We are thankful for that love and will hold it dear until, by the grace of God, we meet again!
A time of visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 3rd, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4th, at the funeral home with Pastor Kyle Bailey officiating. For those unable to attend, a recording of the service will eventually be available on Goodwine Funeral Homes' Facebook page or by visiting www.goodwinefuneralhomes.com/live-stream/live-stream.
Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either the "Susie Wesley Memorial Library" or the "Flat Rock Community Center", with envelopes available at the funeral home.
