DIANE PEARLMAN - October 16, 1932 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (Edison)
Obituary Preview: Diane Pearlman Obituary
Diane Pearlman of Somerset, New Jersey passed away quietly in her sleep on Sunday, January 7, 2024, after a long illness at the age of 91. She was happily married for 61 years to her husband Ted, whom she met at the University of Wisconsin and married upon their graduation in 1954. Ted predeceased her in 2015.
She was a loving sister of Kenneth Roberts, MD of Mebane, NC, and mother of Sherri Starkin of Lyle, WA, Stephen Pearlman of Asbury Park, NJ and Peter Pearlman of Brick, NJ. Diane treated her son-in-law Don Starkin, and her daughters-in-law Lorraine Pearlman and Monique Pearlman as if they were her own. She was close to all 5 of her grandchildren and their spouses, Daniel and Diana Pearlman, Benjamin Pearlman, Carrie Lane Pearlman and Mike Bruno, Jordan Pearlman, and Jacob Pearlman. She adored her young great-grandchildren, Teddy Bruno and Dahlia Pearlman.
After Ted’s military service in West Germany post college, Diane and Ted settled in Cranford, NJ, where 2 of her 3 children were schooled until college. After stops in Easton, CT and Wayne, NJ, Diane and Ted retired to Wellington, FL, before they returned to NJ to spend their final years and be closer to family. Diane was a nursery schoolteacher, an administrative assistant for several private businesses, a high school teacher, and a homemaker.
She kept in touch with all extended family, never forgetting a birthday or special event. Diane’s book with lists of these events was massive. In her later years, Diane was able to communicate with family and friends through an acquaintance with e-mail. For her final years, she wanted to stay at the final home she and Ted created, primarily because she could never leave her multiple walls displayed with family photographs through all stages of their lives.
Diane had an incredibly strong constitution and will, as she survived a childhood of the Great Depression, losing her father in her young teens, earlier bouts w/ cancer, and a medically induced coma after she was a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. She lived a full, complete and happy life, which primarily revolved around her family. In honor of the outstanding care that Diane received from Grace Hospice, her family would be pleased if donations in lieu of flowers could be sent to Grace at: Grace Healthcare Services 105 Fieldcrest Ave, Suite 402 Edison, NJ 08837

JANICE GAIL HIRSCH - August 19, 1942 - December 31, 2023

Departed: 12/31/2023 (Edison)
Obituary Preview: Hirsch, Janice Gail
Janice Hirsch, 81, of Metuchen, NJ. passed away peacefully and bravely on December 31, 2023 surrounded by family. She lived and died on her own terms. When it was clear there was nothing more that could be done, she chose to live the last chapter of her life at home. She is predeceased by her husband, Milton Hirsch, who took close care of her until his passing on May 17, 2018.
Janice is survived by her four cherished children, Lauren Ryan and her husband John Ryan of Montclair, NJ, Tracy Kane and her partner David Tanner of West Hartford, CT, Rhonda Hogan and her husband Ray Hogan of Branchburg, NJ, and Michael Hirsch and his wife Dina Hirsch of Merrick, Long Island. She also leaves behind six grandchildren whom she deeply loved: Hallie Ryan, Benjamin Ryan, Alexis Hogan, Max Hogan, Alexandra Hirsch, and Zachary Hirsch. She had intentions to introduce each grandchild to live theater by taking them to see The Lion King on Broadway. Even though her health precluded her from fulfilling the entirety of her plan, many of her grandchildren experienced their first Broadway show with Nana at their side.
Janice was fiercely dedicated to ensuring her children had the opportunity to attend college, an opportunity she did not have herself. After spending years as a stay-at-home mom, she reentered the workforce as an art consultant first in New Jersey and then in New York City. Art was her passion. She had a keen eye for everything beautiful and helped people all over the world select art for their homes. Over the years, she built a loyal client base and continued to sell art from her home until very recently. She loved to travel and visited her favorite city, Paris, eight times, the last time taking her oldest granddaughter, Hallie, with her. She loved theater and film, cultivating this joy in each of her children. The last Broadway show she attended was in December 2022, the opening night of Some Like It Hot to which she was invited by her longtime friend, composer and lyricist Marc Shaiman.
As her health declined and it became more difficult for her to get out, she dedicated herself to her indoor plants. Every Monday morning, she would tend to them, watering and pruning them, turning them to ensure that each side of the plant got the necessary exposure to light.
Her family would like to thank the many health care providers who made a difference in her life along the way.
The funeral will be Wednesday, January 3 at 1:30 pm at Beth Israel Cemetery on Route 1 in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Shiva will be directly following the funeral at approximately 3:30 pm at the home of Lauren and John Ryan: 37 Cambridge Road, Montclair, NJ and Thursday, January 4 from 3-8 pm.

PHYLLIS TENDRICK - September 12, 1935 - November 26, 2023

Departed: 11/26/2023 (Edison)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Tendrick, 88 years of age, of NJ, sadly left us on November 26, 2023. Phyllis was born in the Bronx, NY on September 12, 1935. She is predeceased by her parents Manya and Benjamin (Bennie) Gorenstein, as well as her two siblings, Florence and Edith. Phyllis suffered the loss of her beloved husband, Sandy (Sander) Tendrick, eight and a half months prior to her passing. He was the love of her life, and their story began with a serendipitous blind date. Sandy's friend Herbie dialed a phone number in the newspaper for a basketball league, but unbeknownst to him, the newspaper mistakenly published Phyllis' family’s telephone number instead. Herbie called and spoke with Phyllis' sister, who was engaged at the time, so she arranged a double blind date for Phyllis and a friend. The intention was for Herbie to accompany Phyllis while Sandy would be paired with her friend. However, upon seeing Phyllis as soon as the door opened, Sandy introduced himself as "Herbie" so that he could be Phyllis' date instead. Phyllis always fondly recalled this encounter as love at first sight. She often delighted in recounting their early dates, particularly how her head fit perfectly on Sandy's shoulder when they went to the movies. Phyllis was sixteen years old and Sandy was twenty when they first met, leading her to humorously remark that "Sandy was afraid he was stealing the cradle." Their first date initiated a lifelong tradition of holding hands that endured until the end of their time together.
Phyllis worked as a switchboard operator before dedicating herself to raising a family. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She took immense pride in her home and family. She spent time preparing delicious meals for family gatherings passing on cherished family traditions. Phyllis had a flair for interior decorating, always creating an inviting and warm environment in her home. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sketching with charcoals and swimming laps. Phyllis, a proficient swimmer, aspired to becoming the next Esther Williams wanting to swim the English Channel. Phyllis and Sandy were inseparable, spending quality time together walking, reading, engaging in conversations, and never running out of things to talk about. Phyllis looked forward to Friday evenings when she took the bus into NY to meet Sandy at their favorite restaurant. After raising their children, she had a fulfilling job working in the Guidance office at Pascack Valley High School. There, she developed strong connections with staff and students and the experience brought her great joy and satisfaction.
Phyllis had an extraordinary sense of humor and enjoyed entertaining those she cared about. In her later years, she often expressed the sentiment, "People look but they don't see.” It is evident that everyone involved in her life could see that she was incredibly loving and supportive. As Phyllis would often say, "Azoy geyt der labin," which translates to "That's the way life goes.” This phrase clearly exhibits her resilience and wisdom. She is survived by her daughter Mara Hoffman and husband Daniel, her sons Larry and Jess Tendrick, granddaughters Risa and Hannah Hoffman, sister Marlene and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her!
