Lenora Naomi Jewett Konow - April 03, 1943 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Taftville)
Obituary Preview: Lenora Naomi Jewett Konow, born on April 3, 1943, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024. She grew up on Gurleyville Rd in Storrs, CT with loving parents W. Charles Jewett and Laura Walthert Jewett as well as her beloved brother Everett Jewett. Lenora was predeceased by her devoted husband John Patrick Konow of Franklin, CT.
Lenora left behind a legacy of love, compassion, and kindness which she passed along to her five children and their significant others: John and Krys Konow, Theresa and Ethan Brysgel, Jim and Karen Konow, Thomas Konow and Karen Arfi, and Judy Konow-Hinds. Lenora was predeceased by her son-in-law, Lennus Hinds.
There was no deeper love than the adoration that Lenora exhibited for her ten grandchildren: Christopher John Konow, Kathryn Konow, Taylor Brysgel, Devon Brysgel, Taryn Brysgel, Alison Konow, Julia Konow, Kelsey Konow, Aria Hinds, and Jacoby Hinds. From sledding on snowy hills by her house to splashing in her pool or hunting for pastel Easter eggs, she embedded each grandchild with a rich devotion to family, boundless sentiment for holidays, and a commitment to togetherness.
Lenora was a member of the first graduating class from EO Smith in 1961. Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator before marrying John on May 4, 1963. After the wedding, the happy couple drove cross country to live in San Francisco, California, where John was stationed at the Presidio Army Base before returning to Franklin, CT to build her home and life.
Lenora was a second “mother” to many throughout her lifetime. She loved, cared, and babysat for a multitude of children, leaving an eternal imprint on their hearts. She had an open-door policy in her house where friends and family could come and go while always being greeted with warmth, food, drinks, and kindness.
After raising her family, Lenora worked at Mohegan Sun as a receptionist and telephone operator where she made many meaningful relationships. Lenora also juggled and excelled in a plethora of special roles. She volunteered as a cub scout leader; ran the baseball field concession stand; organized multiple fundraisers and events for the Franklin Elementary School, Little League, and Boy Scouts; and, in her later years, acted as a foster grandparent in the Norwich School System. She was quick to lend a helping hand or loving ear, often being the first one at anyone’s doorstep after a crisis with a dish of pierogis, zucchini bread, or casserole. Lenora was witty and often ended phone calls with her family by saying “I love you most” as she passed along sage advice as a jack of all trades who prided herself on equal parts intellect and compassion.
Lenora enjoyed traveling when able and treasured her visit to Switzerland, where she was able to explore her ancestral roots. Her travels, and the adventures of her loved ones, were reflected by her ever-growing collection of cherished thimbles.
Lenora instilled an incontrovertible dedication to hard work and perseverance in all her children and grandchildren. She was a guru at pierogi making and mahjong, a lover of dogs and white birch trees, a proud Book Club member, an expert at extended conversation, and a woman who did not need sugar in her coffee since “she was sweet enough”. Whether it be sudoku or Mexican train dominoes, her appreciation for engagement and involvement ran deep as did her immense love for dogs - specifically her gentle companion Kootzie.
Lenora will be undoubtedly missed by her countless friends and family, yet her devotion to family, work ethic, and vast capacity for empathy and love is radiant through her beloved family. Lenora’s true legacy was one of pure generosity, love, and kindness that orbited around those who were lucky enough to know her.

Theodore J. Torrey - May 27, 1952 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Taftville)
Obituary Preview: Norwich, CT
Ted passed with his loved ones by his side. Although not sudden, it is hard to believe he is gone.
For all who have had the wonderful privilege to know Ted, knows they were truly loved. And to be loved by Ted, in turn, knows he will be truly missed.
Ted enjoyed many things in life like family picnics, western horseback riding in parades, riding motorcycles, wrestling and hunting. He worked at Federal Paperboard for many years and was very good at what he did there. As for Captain Scott's, you could not have found a more spotless restaurant to eat at.
Not only did have Ted have his own children Ted, Todd, Tammy and Chad, he also adopted two more! Rhonda and Keith now had a Dad.
Ted was special for many reasons and he touched the lives of so many around him. As for me, the daughter he chose to adopt, Rhonda I can remember as I was growing up I would always ask Dad for his guidance and when I would call for him, one of his famous sayings was, "Yes, this is God, you called?" It always put a smile on my face. Ted's grandson Aiden was his pride and joy!  He would laugh with so much love in his heart because Aiden called him, "Bop Bop." He will forever be Aiden's Bop Bop!
Ted enjoyed the company that would come pick him up and take him out for a while. His nephew Randy, Keri and their son Mason cherished all the times they would bring Uncle Teddy out to enjoy the three C's; coffee, crawlers, and cigarettes. He brought so much joy when he would play Santa for his nephew Matt,Nikki, and their children Kaiya, Jade, and Layne and all the youngins in the house. I am sure everyone who knew him had a special bond with him and a story of their own to share. Ted says, "We are lent to each other for a certain amount of time and we don't know how long or short the time is." He taught us to cherish every moment spent with out loved ones. And remember, EVERY ROSE HAS IT'S THORN!

Departed: 03/12/2024 (Taftville)
Obituary Preview: Alycia Ziegler, resident of Andover, left her loving family on March 12, 2024, at the young age of 39.
Alycia was born to Claire Niles and George Ziegler on August 11, 1984, in Middletown, New York. Her close relationship with her family and loved ones developed her social and nurturing abilities, allowing her to build bridges and create lasting change in her communities. Alycia’s insatiable passion for helping others and multifaceted skillset allowed her to live many lives, as she affectionally called her history before Three Rivers. She worked in broadcasting, event planning, dog grooming, assisting in vet offices, and she was even a paint pro. Alycia’s path was destined for Connecticut when she accepted the opportunity to be a camp counselor at Camp Harkness. Her time as a paraprofessional working with students with disabilities at Ledyard Middle School set in motion her journey to weave education, event planning, and advocacy together.
Three Rivers was a catalyst that gave Alycia the position and reach to help thousands of local community members. Starting in 2013, she began forming connections with clubs and activities that empowered her and her fellow classmates. Serving on several executive leadership positions in clubs, most notably as President of the Student Government Association, she became an invaluable asset to the campus. Alycia accepted the position as a student worker, where she was given the platform to form connections with students and revolutionize the culture on campus. She rose to become Director of Student Activities in 2019 and served as an adjunct in the Math department. She oversaw events for students and provided leadership training. Alycia also served on various committees and task forces, most notably as the DEI/Equity Coordinator for Three Rivers and helping to run the Full Plate Pantry.
In 2016, Alycia earned an Associate of Liberal Arts & Sciences degree from Three Rivers Community College. She went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Marketing at UCONN and a Master of Education in Higher Education and Administration from Boston University. During this time, she also became a champion and advocate for students of the LGBTQIA+ community, student mental well-being, health rights, and supporting students with food insecurity. She constantly fought for equity and social justice for all and leveraged her position and connections to forge long-lasting change in the Southeastern Connecticut region. Alycia volunteered for Autism Speaks and served on the OutCT board, promoting numerous events supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Her service to others was recognized by everyone she impacted. In 2014, Alycia received the 40 Under 40 Award, which recognizes young professionals who excel in areas of Leadership and Community. In 2017, her students gifted her the Lavendar Award at the first Lavendar Graduation she helped establish at Three Rivers.
In 2014 Alycia met the love of her life, the one who would fill her cup and be the foundation of all her accomplishments, Amy. They formed an unshakable bond and blended their families in 2018. Their shared love for helping others became a superpower, and Alycia was the first to point out that all of her successes were due to Amy's support.
Alycia fiercely believed in being a good human, which meant a lifelong devotion to using any spare time and energy to try to make the world a better place for every person who crossed her path. She believed in adopting compassion, kindness, and empathy as the foundation for every interaction she had with others. She was always there to provide support, whether it be a shoulder to lean on, a Dunkin Donuts coffee run, watching Hallmark Movies, random bouts of singing, or playing Pokémon Go. As a result, she inspired numerous people to evolve into the folx they want to be.

Lisbeth Mary Sheehan - February 03, 1955 - January 30, 2024

Departed: 01/30/2024 (Taftville)
Obituary Preview: Lisbeth Mary Sheehan, of Norwich, died at her home Tuesday, January 30, 2024. She was 68. She is survived by her husband Mark; sons Chris and Kevin and their respective wives Sandy and Nora; grandchildren Rosie, Sebastian, Lina, and Hugo; and her siblings Lynn, Lenny, Tim, Katy, Dan, and Anne (Ri). Beth’s strong heart, loving presence, and dry sense of humor, live on through her family and the hundreds of students, colleagues, and friends whom she dearly touched throughout her life.
Beth was born to Kathleen and Leonard Costello, of Uncasville, where she was raised with her three sisters and three brothers in the Roman Catholic tradition. She attended Notre Dame and St. Bernard’s High Schools (1973), where she played volleyball and met Mark Sheehan of Norwich through friends when they were both 17. They married at Connecticut College’s Harkness Chapel in 1982 and spent the next 41 years in partnership.
Together, Beth and Mark raised two sons, Chris and Kevin, in a loving home, where they instilled values of hard work, humbleness, and community generosity. Both boys were active in the Boy Scouts and the Church, and the family enjoyed trips to the seashore, hikes in the area’s parks, and bicycling on the Cape Cod rail trail.
Beth graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1977 with a degree in Early Childhood Development, and worked briefly in the bookstore at Connecticut College, surrounded by, of course, books. She pursued her Master’s in Education at Sacred Heart University and started her career in the Norwich Public School system thereafter. Beth’s first full time teaching job was with preschool students from homes where English is a second language. She shared a variety of fun experiences with the children, including hatching and raising live chickens in the classroom! It was here that Beth saw the profound value of parents reading to their children as a way to accelerate development.
Beth transitioned to Kelly Middle School in 1992 as an 8th grade language arts and “reading” teacher alongside Peter Popinchalk, April Schulz and many others. “Mrs. Sheehan” was known as a firm yet caring teacher who ensured that her students had the tools and individualized attention they needed to succeed. She organized groups of middle school students to visit and read to elementary school kids in the area. She was an exemplary and highly respected educator and mentor, and teachers were frequently sent to observe her lessons. Beth earned Teacher of the Year at Kelly during her tenure, and retired in 2018.
At home, Beth loved to grow herbs in her garden, draw flowers, and flex her Wordle prowess in text messages with her siblings and friends. True to her Irish roots, she was devoted to potatoes, with her favorite being a simple baked potato, loaded with butter, sour cream, and home-grown chives. This was often accompanied by an expertly grilled steak by Mark, and a generous helping of spinach. She was a skillful cook and was famous for carrying forward family recipes like her Hungarian coffee cake, pineapple tea cakes, raisin bread, baked beans, and even goulash.
Beth could be found on a summer day reading a book at Waterford Beach, savoring a lobster roll and chardonnay at Ford’s Lobster, or strolling at Harkness, Bluff Point, or Mohegan Park. She regularly visited Block Island and New Smyrna, FL, where she gathered jars full of translucent sea glass, treasuring (as she always emphasized) the rare blue pieces the best. She and Mark loved exploring the region from Old Saybrook to Westerly and being ever present in their community.
Recently, Beth cherished spending time with her four grandchildren in Chicago and Greenwich. She shared her love for peanut M&Ms with Sebastian, her affinity for charm bracelets with Rosie, and cuddles with babies Lina and Hugo. Her grandkids were beneficiaries of her endlessly thoughtful easter baskets, Christmas stocking stuffers, and of course, books from A-Z.
Beth was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in October of 2022. She underwent chemotherapy treatment in Waterford, in consultation with Memorial Sloan Kettering. She faced the treatment as she did all things: steadily and proactively, with quiet determination and grace. She lived an active, full life, surrounded by her family, friends, and beloved community to the very end. We will remember her fierce love for family and friends, her witty, pun-loving sense of humor, and her singular mix of intelligence and love for the craft of telling stories through writing.

Mary E. “Betty” Caron - July 16, 1929 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Taftville)
Obituary Preview: Mary E. “Betty” (Legare) Caron 94, of Norwich, peacefully left this world on Saturday, January 27, 2024, to join her loving “Bo”, her husband of 73 years.
She was born in Franklin, Massachusetts, on July 16, 1929, to the late Elphage and Dorothy (McLean) Legare. Betty grew up and attended school in the Thamesville section of Norwich. She worked at The Thermos Company and Electro-Motive, and then retired from the former Norwich Hospital after 25 years.
On October 23, 1948, she married Joseph E. “Bo” Caron, who predeceased her just two years ago. The couple worked at Norwich Hospital together while living on Sunset Avenue in Norwich. They loved to travel and take cruises to warm spots, which inspired them to move to North Palm Beach, Florida, where they shared many years with her sister Olive (Legare) Carson and her family. They enjoyed the warm weather with their trusty Cairn Terrier, Sandy, but Betty just didn’t like the geckos. They eventually moved back to Norwich and the weather of the North. In Connecticut, her sister Dorothy (Legare) Wolinski and her family shared many wonderful memories with Betty and Bo.
Betty was predeceased by a brother Sonny Legare, and sister Olive. She is survived by sister Dorothy, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who all enjoyed her company and loved her very much. Without children of their own, Betty and Bo were not only beloved as Aunt and Uncle, but they served as adopted parents and grandparents and terrific friends to us all.
A funeral home service will be held on Friday February 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM in Godere-Guillot Funeral Home 21 N. Second Ave Taftville, CT followed by a graveside service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Norwich.
