He then worked his way through Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) holding such jobs as road and bridge construction and maintenance, dump truck driver, dining hall waiter, reader for blind students, Christmas toy salesman at Sears & Roebuck, and others.
While at Indiana, Ken played IUP football as a three-year letterman, served as class president, and graduated as a science and biology teacher in 1960. He received his master’s degree in Biology from IUP in 1964, writing a research thesis on parasites in cottontail rabbits. Ken was awarded a Ph.D. in Science Education from Michigan State University in 1970, writing a dissertation on adoption of innovations in science education. In the early 1980s, Dr. Mechling formed his own corporation, School Science Services, Inc. His work as an educational consultant and teacher took him all over the world, including 48 of the 50 United States and more than 60 countries around the world. His favorite places were Cappadocia in central Turkey, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya, Bali, Indonesia, and Caiscais, Portugal. He worked for many years as a consultant to the US Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) in England, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Panama, Cuba, and Iceland and with international schools in Russia, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, the Canary Islands, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Saipan, and the Pacific Islands of Samoa, Palau and Guam. In 2004, the Mediterranean Association of International Schools presented him with its ceremonial leadership sword in recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Education. Dr. Mechling estimated that he had traveled more than two million miles teaching science to teachers and school leaders. One of Dr. Mechling’s accomplishments of which he was most proud was the founding, with former state Representative David R. Wright and the Pennsylvania Higher Assistance Agency, of several statewide, first-ever programs that offered tuition-free, graduate-level courses to more than 30,000 Pennsylvania elementary and secondary teachers of science and technology. The programs, for which he served as Director, included the Pennsylvania Science Teacher Education Program (PA STEP), Information Technology for the Commonwealth (ITEC), and the Scholars in Education Award (SEA), all of which operated from 1982 through 1994 and were headquartered at Clarion University and in Shippenville, PA. They were married on October 9, 1976 and celebrated their 47th anniversary this past October. Rarely were they found one without the other. They did everything together as a team, most of the time while holding hands. Where one was, the other was never far away.
For Jim, life was something to be experienced, not just lived.
During his lifetime, he enjoyed traveling both here in the states, and abroad, his favorite being the highlands of Scotland. Metal detecting and searching for that elusive meteorite or treasure ranked right up there, as well as star gazing with Kim into the wee hours of the morning and fishing for the one that got away. He was especially proud of his yard, garden, and orchard, and very much enjoyed sharing , the many fresh fruits and vegetables they produced. Any nice sunny day Jim could be found at "the farm" either mowing the fields with his old 1950 tractor, or cutting firewood for the sheer enjoyment of it.
Jim could build, invent, and fix anything, was always ready with a helping hand and that infectious smile, all the while having the patience of Job.
He thoroughly enjoyed history, listening to the old stories of days gone by, and was always ready to metal detect with Carolynn, his daughter and metal detecting buddy. Jim was very observant, and keen to the feelings of others; a true gentleman of the first order, making those around him feel comfortable, no matter the situation. He could often be heard using the quote: “Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.” …reminding us that everyone passes away at some point in their earthly life, so make it a good life!
He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Shippenville, and held the position of vice president of Shippen Cemetery Association for many years, a position that had been passed onto him by his father, Paul.
In addition to his wife, Kim, Jim leaves behind two children; a daughter, Carolynn (Terry Jr.) Thompson of Knox, and a son, Jason Pfaff (Jennifer) of Shippenville; and five grandchildren: Patrick, Alexis, and Kolton Thompson, all of Knox, and Emily and Natalie Pfaff of Shippenville.
Jim is also survived by his half brothers Mark (Tricia) Shingledecker of Clarion, Art (Kim) Shingledecker of Sligo; and a half sister Julie (David) Katis of Clarion; a brother in law Pat (Shirley) Carroll II of Lucinda, as well as several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many wonderful family, friends and acquaintances.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Paul and Margaret Pfaff; his adopted brother Mark A Pfaff; his biological mother Ruthie McMillen Shingledecker; and his father and mother- in-law Patrick A. and Bonnie Carroll.
Family and friends will be received at Goble Funeral Home, 330 Wood Street, Clarion, PA from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, March 21, 2024. An additional visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 10am to 11am. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11am in the funeral home with Ed Yount officiating. Jim will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Shippenville, Pa.
The family would like to thank the Clarion Cancer Center team, and the Clarion Forest VNA, and Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice, but above all Dr. Cyrus Khan and the cancer team at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, for their selfless dedicated service, before, during, and after stem cell transplant, and beyond; as well as our wonderful stem cell donor, JHD of Sacramento, California.
Memorial donations may be made in Jim’s name to: The Clarion Cancer Center at 150 Doctors Lane, Suite 1, Clarion, Pa 16214; The Clarion-Forest VNA/Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice at 271 Perkins Road, Clarion, PA.; or Shippen Cemetery Assoc. at 8615 Route 322, Shippenville, Pa. 16254.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, achievements, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and requirements. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and in their own voice. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in self-reflection.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the most basic information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a sense of who the person was and what they accomplished.
