David Ford Fitzgerald - June 27, 1933 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Minneapolis)
Obituary Preview: David Ford Fitzgerald dies at 90, leaving a legacy of love and achievement
David Ford Fitzgerald died on March 23, 2024, at his home in Edina, Minnesota, surrounded by family. He was 90 years old.
David led an eventful life and was beloved by a large circle of friends and extended family to whom he was devoted. He was generous and outgoing, easily making friends wherever he went and bringing zest to any interaction. David enjoyed a stellar legal career, winning major product liability lawsuits against automobile, aviation, and other manufacturers. His work improved product safety and influenced legislation. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was in his 40s, he managed the disease in a determined, disciplined manner for nearly 50 years, maintaining good health and an active lifestyle. David also had a distinguished military career as a Navy pilot, which thrust him briefly into the news in the leadup to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He was a lifelong Catholic committed to serving others, and he gave his time and support to social justice causes. David overcame his early learning struggles with dyslexia and exceled in his studies. He was married to the love of his life, Helen Knoll Fitzgerald, for 63 years.
Born on June 27, 1933, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, David was the second of three sons of Gerald Arthur Fitzgerald and Regina Ford Fitzgerald. The family relocated numerous times, as his father's career as an agricultural scientist took them from Birds Eye frozen foods in Massachusetts to General Foods in New York, to Dover, Delaware, where he developed rations for the Army in World War II, and later to Iran. It was in Delaware, home to Dover Air Force Base, that David became enamored with aviation. He later joined the Navy, following in the footsteps of his mother, one of the first women to serve in the U.S. military, having been enlisted as a "Yeoman F" in Newport, R.I., during World War I.
David graduated from Georgetown University in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in history and government and completed training at the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School in 1956. After serving on active duty from 1956-1959, he attended law school at Georgetown, where he was a member of the Law Review, graduating in 1962. He ranked tenth in his class of 104 students. His first legal job was as law clerk to Frank T. Gallagher, Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. During two weeks of active duty as a Navy reservist, he flew routine patrols over international waters from Boca Chica Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. On August 30, 1962, while in their S-2F tracker aircraft 15 miles from Cuba, David and his crew were fired upon by two small vessels believed to be Cuban before returning safely to base. Cuban President Fidel Castro denied the attack occurred. The White House lodged an official protest, and President Kennedy ordered U.S. forces to return fire should another incident take place. Shortly after, David returned to Minnesota and resumed his duties under Judge Gallagher. He remained in the Naval reserve until 1977, flying more than 3,000 hours while on active duty and retiring at the rank of commander. David spoke in depth about his military service as part of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, accessible here: loc.gov/item/afc2001001.124111/
In 1963, David joined the Minneapolis law firm that became Rider Bennett. He was the seventh attorney in what ultimately grew to a firm of 190 by the time he retired in 2004. David had the privilege of being a trial lawyer for over 40 years, all with the Rider firm he so dearly loved. He was an exceptionally talented lawyer in that he was successful and respected as both a defense and plaintiff's attorney. Most of his cases were referrals from other lawyers or past clients, a clear sign of the regard in which he was held.
Renowned for his consummate preparation and professional demeanor, both inside the courtroom and out, David worked tirelessly and compassionately on behalf of his clients. He lit up every courtroom he entered and loved the colleagues he worked with throughout his career. He was blessed to call many of them dear friends, even many of those who were his courtroom adversaries. Always modest and unassuming, David was very proud of the work he did as a trial lawyer and represented every client to the very best of his ability.
David was also caring, supportive, and generous mentor to dozens of lawyers, many of whom went on to distinguished careers as trial lawyers, law firm leaders and judges. His compassion, integrity, honesty, creativity, and dedication to all his clients was imbued in the many young lawyers who worked with him over his long and exceptional career. David was a warm, much loved, and truly special human being. The twinkle in his eye and his mischievous smile were ever present.
David handled many cases against major manufacturers such as General Motors, Pratt & Whitney, Volkswagen, and Chrysler. His victories lead to multiple improvements in their products for purposes of increased safety.
David was recognized and honored by his peers through his associations with the International Society of Barristers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the American College of Trial Lawyers, all of which are invitation-only organizations of elite trial lawyers, both defense and plaintiff. As a young law clerk in Washington in 1961, he was awarded a Citation for Meritorious Service by then-Secretary of Labor (and later Supreme Court Associate Justice) Arthur J. Goldberg. His colleagues note that David was named a "Super Lawyer" and one of the "Best Lawyers in America," which came as no surprise to anyone who practiced with him.
David had a rich spiritual life as a member of the Catholic Church, most recently at Christ the King Parish in Minneapolis. He attended silent retreats for 36 years at Demontreville Jesuit Retreat House outside St. Paul. He was a longtime member of the Catholic service and fellowship organization Serra International, and he served as a mentor for students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities. David was deeply committed to the principles of integration, diversity, equity, and inclusion and served on the social justice committee of Christ the King Church.
David studied religion and theology throughout his lifetime, taking a course at Oxford University while in his 60s. He managed his diabetes aggressively, traveling to Austria receive training in a method of precision glucose control, which greatly improved his ability to remain healthy with diabetes. In the last few months of his life, David’s diabetic team joked that he was probably the only 90-year-old still managing to use his insulin pump. His doctors were amazed at his ability to understand and manage his diabetic care, until his final weeks.
David is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Knoll Fitzgerald; his children John Fitzgerald; Molly Fitzgerald, and grandchildren Ellie and Lucas; and Kevin Fitzgerald (Lisa), and grandsons Jackson, Andrew, and Nicholas; and several dozen nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Always available and engaged, he was dearly loved by his wife and children and by his extended family. He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald and Richard.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on June 11, 2024, at the Church of Christ the King, 5029 Zenith Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55410. Visitation at 10 a.m. will be followed by the service at 11 a.m.

He is survived by his children, Susan (Jon) Erickson, Margaret (Aaron) Voigt, Kathryn (Patrick) Fox, and Matthew (Dianne) McConville; 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and sister, Patty Holloran.
Chuck was an active lifelong resident of south Minneapolis who loved his city. He attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated from Washburn High School in 1951. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a master's degree in education. After serving in the Army at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, AK, Chuck became a special education teacher and then principal in the Minneapolis Public Schools for over 30 years. In 1957, he met Irene, the love of his life, and together they had 4 children. Chuck had many lifelong friends from elementary and high school and was active in his church. His love for his family was only rivaled by his love for dogs, specifically Golden Retrievers that he trained in obedience and won national championships. Chuck and Irene spent many weekends at their cabin in Wisconsin with family where he enjoyed playing cards, boating, using his chainsaw, socializing with neighbors, and fixing everything that broke. In 2004, Chuck and Irene began spending their winters in Naples, FL where they made many friends from all over the country.
Chuck was the ultimate cheerleader for the underdog. He was always the first to help those in need whether it was a stranger, student, friend, or neighbor. He believed in giving people second and even third chances. Everyone loved to be around Chuck and his great sense of humor. He put people at ease and made them feel welcome. Maureen Mae Soller - August 09, 1940 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Minneapolis)
Obituary Preview: We are devastated to share that our beautiful, brilliant, vibrant, creative, loving, supportive, independent and adventurous mother, Maureen Soller, is no longer here with us on earth after a short illness. She is back in the arms of our father, Tom, and no doubt playing her trombone in a heavenly marching band with all the angels and greats. Mom was born in 1940 in Denver, Colorado and grew up on Garland Ave in the suburb of Lakewood with her older sister, Carol. She remembered that street fondly, and all the families that made up that special village, and had many fun adventures with her best friend Diana during her school years. When she turned 18, she took herself off on a solo adventure to California where she saw San Fran, Oakland and spent time with cousins in Pasadena. She took the Amtrak home, taking many pictures from the Vista Dome. After graduating with a teaching degree from Colorado State College, she moved with her best friend, Carole, originally from Hawaii, to MN to teach. It was so unusual at the time to have teachers from afar, that they were interviewed by the local paper, and promptly burglarized in their new apartment. She met her husband, Tom, at a party in St. Paul, and he was so shy it took him 6 months to call her though he was immediately enamored. Married in 1964, off to Hawaii they went to visit Carole and her lovely family over the holidays, the most fun and exciting trip of her life as she reminisced recently. Her son, Mark, and daughter, Diana were born just before the family was transferred to Utah, where Maureen made life-long friends and volunteered at the local Catholic Church with her partner in fun, Monsignor Vaughn. Returning to MN several years later, Maureen made her mark volunteering her talents with her kids’ schools, the League of Catholic Women, and Risen Christ School, where she won an award for her service. Maureen spent the last years of her life volunteering at Risen Christ, and taking care of our father faithfully during a long illness until his death in 2020. As always, she prioritized supporting her kids through their challenges, celebrating their wins and having many adventures with them, including a return trip to Hawaii in 2021. She also wanted me to note her 95+ avg score on her New York Times puzzle games. Maureen was pre-deceased by her husband, Tom, sister-in-law, Janice, and her parents, and is survived by her children, Mark (Michele) and Diana, sister Carol, nephew Grant (Jan) and family, niece Gayle (Scott) and family, honorary family member, Don, and friends too many to count. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, MN on March 20th. Services begin at 10am, with visitation 1 hour prior and luncheon to follow. Please wear black/white or red to reflect Maureen’s favorite color palette. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the service will be available at:

Whether it was portaging into the Boundary Waters, flying into to Canada to fish, trips to Hunter Lake (to catch absolute slabs!) and hunting in Donnelly, MN. His Tuesday afternoons with "the guys" playing dominoes was something he always looked forward to. It was never about "who won", which in all honestly it seemed like he never did- just quality time with friends. Bill was truly a gifted storyteller. Jacob Arilious Poe - February 11, 1993 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Minneapolis)
Obituary Preview: If you consider yourself a baseball fan, the month of March cues the anticipation and excitement of a new baseball season where you can once again renew your love for the game. It seems fitting that during this happiest of seasons, we honor the life of Jake, who spent much of his time on earth loving, watching, and playing baseball. Jake’s life journey took him in a direction that nobody could have anticipated, but we are now honored to remember him with smiles, love, and pride in celebration of what a kind and gentle soul he was.
Jake Arillious Poe was born on February 11, 1993. He was a wonderful son, a sweet little brother who loved chocolate milk and Oreo cookies, playing lightening basketball, and skating in the backyard. Jake made many lifelong friends during his time in school at Our Lady of Peace and then later at Washburn High School. From a young age, playing sports is where Jake thrived and was happiest, always throwing a football or dribbling a basketball. Baseball, though, was his true love, and playing on the Merchants and the Expos not only provided him a way to show off his physical talents but also provided him a sense of normalcy in his life, which had become increasingly complicated in recent years.
Despite Jake’s always sweet and unassuming disposition, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia psychosis in 2020. Successful treatment for mental health disorders is challenging at best and Jake bravely endured hospital stays, many doctor visits, and medication changes during the years that followed. He continued to be a hard worker at his job with Fed Ex, a loving son, and brother, and always showed the energy and desire to beat what was trying to beat him. We are comforted in knowing that he truly knew how much he was deeply loved by his family and friends and we choose today and always to honor his beautiful life and memory in ways that he would appreciate and enjoy.
As the ones who are left behind to make sense of why a bright light like Jake had to leave us so soon, we perhaps should not look for an explanation for it, but rather what can we learn from the way he lived his life. Be kind to others. Tell your mom (Momma T) that you love her, work hard and do the activities that bring joy to your heart, eat more Oreos and fettuccine alfredo than recommended, and do not feel bad about it! Be humble. Be kind. Be sensitive. Jake was all of that and more and we will celebrate his memory, today and always, by remembering this sweet soul that will be ever present in our hearts and minds forever.
Mass of Christian Burial and a celebration of Jake's life will be Tuesday, March 26th, 2024 at 11AM ~ Church of Our Lady of Peace, 5426 12th Avenue South with visitation beginning at 10 AM. A reception will follow at Pizza Luce ~ 800 West 66th Street, Richfield, MN. Gill Brothers 612-861-6088 www.gillbrothers.com
