Dennis C. MacGrogan - December 12, 1942 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Ventnor City)
Obituary Preview: Dennis C. MacGrogan, 81, of Margate, passed on April 29th.
Born in the Inlet of Atlantic City, affording him wonderful and interesting childhood memories, he graduated from ACHS in 1960, and joined what was IBEW 211. He married his high school sweet heart, Jane Finegan. After retiring at age 55, they took many trips around the globe searching for the perfect beach (like Margate had Pre-Dune) having incredible adventures not always speaking the local languages.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane, daughter Leslie Smith and partner Rob Bridge, Son Dennis, and only grandchild Mackenzie Smith who brought a plethora of love and joy into his life. He is also survived by his brother Raymond and predeceased by his brother Kevin.
A man generous to a fault, who loved his family, the Flyers, and the beach, will be remembered for his unique dry-humor, his famous Irish goodbyes, and uncanny wealth of knowledge stored behind those blue eyes. He didn’t speak much, but when he did, you listened, although no one would play Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy with him because he always knew the answers. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, not only for the man he was, but for his incredible ability to fix anything broken (or not). Now, if we could only figure out the remotes.
Have a beer, say “Cheers” and do an act of kindness for someone in his memory.

Edwin M. McMeekin III - September 10, 1944 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Ventnor City)
Obituary Preview: Edwin Major McMeekin III (EZ-Ed), 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 3, 2024.
Born September 10, 1944, in Ventnor City, NJ, he spent all of his life on Absecon Island from Atlantic City to Longport, finally settling in Margate for the last 52 years. Growing up in “Ducktown” and graduating from Atlantic City High School in ‘62 he worked several jobs from delivering milk to packaged goods.
In 1964, Ed married and soon began a family. His dedication to public service ensued in the late 60’s. He became a Margate City police officer and continued to serve the city until 1994. During his tenure he achieved the rank of lieutenant. Ed received a PBA Valor Award Citation and a Heroism Award from the local VFW for rescuing two men from a fire in the city. As a member and eventually President of the PBA Local 65, he saw the value of championing his fellow officers. Ed always had a side hustle to make ends meet be it mowing lawns or driving to the airport.
Ed’s children were his pride and joy especially when it came to sports. He taught them all he knew and they enjoyed spending time with their dad and learning. He did the same with many of his grandkids. Additionally, Ed coached numerous little league teams in the city and helped run the annual Phillies Home Run Derby. When he wasn't coaching, he was playing rec basketball, softball, bowling, or golf. His love of sports resonated throughout his life either as a player, coach or fan. Through the latter half of his life he enjoyed organizing trips to play golf with friends or see the Superbowl. Ed especially enjoyed trips to see his beloved Celtics play in Boston. He was also known to make a wager or two.
Ed’s other passion was travel. Whether it be driving cars to and from Florida or California, or taking trips with friends and family, he was always up for a vacation. His trips to Europe, Alaska and the west coast are among his most treasured.
After his retirement from the police department, you could find Ed out on his pontoon boat with his second wife Jan, or relaxing in the sun on the beach. He and Jan especially enjoyed it when his grandchildren came to visit so they could spoil them. Ed was quite the dancer, he was usually the first one on the floor at a party or wedding. Up until the end of his life he remained close with many of his childhood friends as well as his former coworkers. His weekly breakfast “meetings” were a great source of joy in his life.
Ed was a friend to many and was always there if you needed him. He made it a priority to do whatever it took to provide for his family.
Ed is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jan, his daughter Roxane Hoffmann (Mickey), Karen McMeekin, and Jennifer Butcher (Troy). His adored grandchildren, Erica, Cambria (Andrew), Nicholas, Sierra (Treyvon), Jacob (Regina), Gianna, Jessie, Anna, Stephen, and his precious great-grandchildren Charlie, Meg, Evelyn, Gilbert, Juliet and James, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ed is also survived by his eldest sister Patricia, brothers, Louis (Connie) and Tom (Kathy), youngest sister Elizabeth (Brian McGrew) and the mother of his children, Barbara. He is predeceased by his parents Patricia (McMeekin) Baldwin and Edwin McMeekin Jr, his twin sister Antoinette Gracco, and brother Daniel McMeekin. Quinn W. Advena - October 07, 2000 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Ventnor City)
Obituary Preview: Quinn William Patrick Advena, 23, of Ventnor City passed away peacefully at home Sunday March 24, 2024.
Quinn was born October 7, 2000 in Somers Point, NJ and was a lifelong resident of Ventnor. He attended the Ventnor Educational Community Complex and was a graduate of the class of 2019 at Holy Spirit High School, where he played soccer and swam on the swim team.
Living on an island was a blessing for Quinn; a self-professed ‘bay rat’, he loved nothing more than to be in, and around, the water. Swimming, boating, fishing, crabbing was always just a quick walk through a neighbor’s yard to the bay and the mile stretch. He served as a dedicated member of the Ventnor Beach Patrol, scanning the ocean with an eagle’s eye, always mindful of the safety of all the children and adults in the water. High on his stand, sun in his eyes, blond hair waving in the salt air, water as far as he could see, that is where Quinn wanted to spend his day.
Some of Quinn’s fondest memories were family trips to Florida and especially England and Ireland, discovering ancient cultures, castles, and the people of these storybook lands, left a profound effect on Quinn. Equally impactful were Quinn’s beloved pets; his cat Ziva, and a trio of gorgeous Great Pyrenees: Stella, Kane and his best buddy TY, named in honor of his favorite football player, TY Hilton of the Indianapolis Colts.
Quinn is survived by loving parents Michael J. and Klaudia (Gorman) Advena and 3 brothers Michael C. (Meggan) Advena, Kieran Advena and Liam Advena. A nephew, Asher Advena, grandparents Jeanne Lawler Gorman, William and Ruth Advena and several aunts and uncles. Predeceased by his grandfather, Edward (Baba) Gorman.

Alda L. Fabietti - December 02, 1927 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Ventnor City)
Obituary Preview: Mafalda (Alda) Fabietti was born in Atlantic City to Peter and Lucy Santini. As she had wished, Alda passed away peacefully in her home in Margate on March 21, 2024.
She attended the local public schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School. She was a child of the Great Depression and World War II and worked at the Tennessee Avenue Fralinger's in the summer of 1944.
After co-authoring the senior play, Alda decided Television was to be the new medium, and in the late 1940s enrolled in Emerson College in Boston to major in production and programming.
After one year her family called her to return to Atlantic City and Alda finished her Collegiate career at Douglas College the Women's College of Rutgers University this time with a focus on the sciences. Upon graduation, Alda worked in the laboratory at Atlantic City Hospital.
On a chance blind date, she met and then married her love Victor Fabietti in 1952. They were happily married for 56 years until Victor's death in 2009.
Alda's giving nature drew her focus to philanthropy. It started at Blessed Sacrament School in Margate, where she organized the school's first library.
When her children entered Holy Spirit High School her attention was directed there. Alda began the "Spirit of the Spring Ball" which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars during its tenure.
Alda's next focal point was Bacharach Rehabilitation Hospital. She worked tirelessly on the Auxiliary Board eventually chairing the annual luncheons to raise much needed monies. Her largest luncheon had over 900 attendees at the Taj Mahal. Alda loved her volunteer work with the Miss America Pageant and received her 25 years of Service Award in 2003. She truly was a "VIH" (very important hostess). She also worked with the RNS foundation and their yearly "Home Showing."
Alda's primary focus was always her family. A remarkable cook, her home was always filled with the sounds of her busy kitchen. Alda's holiday dinner tables were filled with family, friends and all of her love. They are a treasured memory for all.
Alda's front porch is her legacy. She spent hours on her porch. The "Porch" was her favorite spot and she would appear in late morning and retire in the early evening after spending the days with friends. If you weren't on the porch, you missed a lot. Alda discovered a love for Mahjong and hosted games on Mondays and Wednesdays with her close companions until her illness in late 2023. Alda was known for her compassion, endless love and a never-ending need to help those around her. Her life was service to others. She gave her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the everlasting gift of her devotion to them and a love they will always carry. Her precious smile will be in our hearts
forever.
Alda is survived by her three children, Carol, Susan Rosener (James), Victor Jr (and 3rd daughter Wendy); Her grandchildren William (Kate) Rosener, Robert Rosener (Matt), Victor III and Matthew; and her great-grandchildren. Joyceanne Ware - August 24, 1946 - September 26, 2023

Departed: 09/26/2023 (Ventnor City)
Obituary Preview: Joyceanne "Joyce" Ware (nee Zirbser), 77, of Ventnor City, passed away on September 26th, 2023, peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Philadelphia and raised in Westville, NJ. She graduated from Woodbury High School. Joyce was a Varsity member of the High School Color Guard, where she learned her love of dance, choreography and performing arts. Joyceanne attended Pierce College in Philadelphia and obtained her A.D. in Business Administration. With her business degree and acumen for business she started working for her father’s family business in 1965, Zirbser Brothers Construction. She contributed to the development and successful creation of the Zirbser brother’s nursing home enterprise, Greenbriar Nursing Homes, located in Woodbury, Deptford and Hammonton. Joyce was a vital administrative component working directly for her father. Joyceanne made positive contributions during her 40 years of service with the Greenbriar, Inc. legacy. Before retiring she was finally able to hang her hard hat up, on the capstone project of her career. Her contributions to the family business, in a changing and challenging convalescent health care industry, enabled the family business to continue to innovate and implement the construction of a new assisted care facility, Heritage Assisted Care in Hammonton. During that era, this was a new concept as to the way convalescent care was provided. After that time in Joyce’s life, she was finally able to invest all of her wanted time into her family. In 1970 Joyce moved to Ventnor Heights to raise her family. She devoted all of her time raising a family and commuting to work during her tenure. Her love of the beach and ocean was always a part of her life.
Spending time at her father’s home on Avolyn Avenue and the beach, she knew that one day she would call Ventnor her home. Joyce and her husband Reade bought their first newly constructed home together in Ventnor Heights on the north block of Somerset Avenue and she could not have been happier. Those were the beginnings of the happiest days of her life, where she made many memories over the years with family and friends. Ventnor Heights is where Joyce raised her two children Melissa and Reade on a wonderful street with the best neighbors a family could ask for. After 23 years Joyce and Reade decided to move Ventnor City “over the bridge” after a string of potent coastal storms. Still a Ventnor girl at heart she wanted to be closer to the beach where she loved to spend her sweet summer time with her family, taking long walks on the beach and boardwalk. Her home in Ventnor City began a new chapter in her life where she met new neighbors and formed new friendships. She cherished her “coffee talks” and evening happy hours with her beloved neighbor friends. Summer was Joyce’s favorite season. She loved the sun and warm bay and ocean breezes, back yard barbecues with neighbors, friends and family. Joyceanne also loved Millville’s Laurel Lake. The extended family would gather for barbecues on the family dock during Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Back at the Zirbser compound on the Maurice River, she enjoyed her extended Zirbser family, watching her children, little nieces, nephews and cousins enjoying the wooded land that kissed the beauty of the river, admiring the breathtaking sunsets while the kids ran and played on the pier and boats until dusk, shooting off fireworks, eating cold-cut sandwiches and ice cream from the Custard Corral. Joyce embraced her family. She loved her parents and siblings with all of her heart. She was a one of kind loyal sister, daughter, niece and cousin.
Joyce rekindled her love for the performing arts by introducing her young daughter to Lucille Russo’s Aunt Lucy’s Boardwalk Star Review during those beautiful September months at Garden Pier in Atlantic City. She also volunteered in the March of Dimes Telethon, and at Dream Makers Entertainment, founded by Sal Dupree and Diane Kirman, whom she became very close friends with over the years, spending time at her Ventnor Heights home watching countless Super Bowls, World Series Games and eating her homemade cheesesteaks, chicken wings and macaroni salad. Joyce was one of Sal’s helpers who participated in coordinating many recitals and shows at the Ocean City Music Pier and Resorts Casino. Joyce and her husband would patronize Billy’s Pub at Bally’s Casino to watch her friend Sal perform, she would sing along, dance and enjoy the fervor of life. Joyce taught her children to be confident in themselves and she always said, “you can do anything that you put your mind to”. Joyce continued to support her children’s endeavors whether it was her daughter’s interests in performing arts or her son’s athletics and hobbies. Joyceanne and family traveled every year to the Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean cruise lines, she loved visiting all the different islands, experiencing the diverse cultures and people. She would never shy away from purchasing a souvenir or two, which ended up being quite a collection over the years.
Joyce also loved traveling by car to Fort Lauderdale with her father, mother and family multiple times a year. She looked forward to taking a few days to drive down to Florida stopping at her favorite pit stops along the way in Savanah, GA and St. Augustine, FL. She traveled to Canada, Europe, Italy, France, Belgium, United Kingdom, St. Johns, yearly fall road trips to Maine with her husband and skiing vacations with the family to Vermont over the winter. Joyceanne was a very caring and honest person who appreciated all people from all backgrounds. She loved her loyal dogs over the years that always laid by her side because she gave the best pets and rubs around the ears. Joyce gave her family everything that she could make possible, no questions asked. With Joyce’s main focus her family, a devoted wife and mother, she was a homemaker that had a tremendous sense of pride in her family. Joyce considered her children’s close friends her own, interjecting them into her pride. As the matriarch of her family pride she was a mother with a strong will who didn’t take any nonsense and made sure that everyone was treated fairly with dignity and respect. Her brightest moments were the raising of her grandchildren. She dedicated every free moment of her time to them to ensure that they were nurtured and brought up to be the best that they could be as she did with her own.
Joyceanne was predeceased by her father Paul and mother Anne Zirbser. She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 53 years, Reade Ware Sr., her children Melissa (John) Lock and Reade (Lauren) Ware Jr., her siblings Pamela Dunleavy, Paul (Carol) Zirbser Jr., Kathleen (Nate) Holtzman and Michelle (Ed) Bagden, and her beloved grandchildren James & Sadie Lock, and Grace & Elena Ware, nieces and nephews, Frank (Alice) Simola, Danielle Sierra, Doug (Liz) Ware, Matthew Ware, Nate (Dina) Ware, Paul Zirbser III, Natasha Weeks and family, Ed (Rachel) Bagden Jr., Victoria Bagden, Josh & Jason (Sloan) Holtzman. And her furry canine grandchildren Tucker, Paxton, Maxwell and Rosey.
