In addition to James’ obituary, his final footprint that he walked this earth, the family requested to have a few of their favorite memories be listed:
My dad’s favorite quote is from his favorite movie called Escanaba in Da Moonlight, the quote is “If you don’t know where to start, go back to the beginning”. These are the words that I continue repeating to myself following his passing. Anytime I begin to lose hope, or question the meaning of life, I repeat his quote and remind myself that my dad gifted me his strength and wisdom. One thing you know, if you knew anything about my dad and I, was that he was my best friend and we loved keeping each other on our toes. I always tell people, my dad is cooler than me, and the best example of that was in summer of 2022, my dad had the crazy idea that waterskiing at 54 was a great idea. So on a beautiful summer day at the island, I got the skis ready, followed my dad’s directions on how to drive the boat while towing someone behind on skis, and towed him around the lake for a few laps. I will never forget how excited my dad was that not only did he ski without falling, but that I had been the one to drive his boat. For me, this memory holds more than just a fun day with my dad, but also holds in my heart the amount of love and trust my dad had for me to tow him, and drive his baby. This past year, I had my son, while naming him I faced the typical struggles of trying to come up with a name, while deciding on his middle name, I could not imagine any better name other than naming him after my father James, to which I am so incredibly proud and thankful for, especially now. Our father- daughter relationship revolved around our similar outlook on life and the memories we share will always be held close to my heart. I'm thankful for all the smiles and laughs we took part in together, talking to him was my therapy and I shall continue to look for him in the woods and at the cabin…which is where I know he will be waiting for me. Thank you so much for everything that you have always done for myself, Axil, and Ottis. And as always, aaaaho. Love Alison.
One thing about James, he never outgrew any of his passions in life. James and I had met at his island in Tomahawk where he had been ice fishing. My first thought was who was that handsome bad boy from Milwaukee. This set the tone of our relationship for the next 26 years. James was more than just the father to our children; he was our family's rock. We never had to worry about going without because James had our back no matter how great the struggle. Looking back on our many years of marriage, my favorite story of us is about our first wedding. He had taken off work for what felt like the millionth time for what was supposed to be the induction day of our eldest daughter. The hospital called and canceled which left us a free day. I told James, let's get married today. We called the courthouse, a few of our closest friends, and headed up to the Waukesha Courthouse and got married. Our celebration dinner consisted of grilled cheese and orange juice. Three days later, Alison was born. The next few years were rough but we got through them together. In 2007, we decided to take a leap of faith and move to Rothschild while neither of us had jobs. Soon enough, James had gotten a job at CWWC, and after about a year of working there, he got laid off. That year, James did odd jobs, built his beloved dinosaur, and took delight in ensuring to walk our two daughters out to the bus every morning. That year allowed me to see in even greater detail how dedicated he was to doing everything and anything for our family. Our favorite time spent together were our day trips to different beaches and waterfalls in the UP, following Lake Superior's coast. This year, James had been planning a trip to take his motorcycle around Lake Superior. It is incredibly devastating that he had not been able to take that trip. Sorting through everything, I was reminded of the fact that he had his heart attack on a Friday following a long week of work he never was able to catch a break and take some much-deserved time to himself. Thank you James for everything, Jackie.
My favorite memory of dad was when I had shot my first buck. We were down at the farm for the youth hunt, I was 11. We had gone the whole weekend trying to chase a 14 pointer, but we were never able to get close enough to take a shot. The last day of the youth hunt, we went up to the ridge and sat for a while and talked. After a while, we decided to walk down the ridge line, in attempts to flush out any deer. We got to the very edge of the ridge line and proceeded to walk down a hill so steep only my dad would be crazy enough to go down. Once we got to the trail, I started apologizing to my dad that we hadn't seen anything and for what a waste of time and money this trip had been. All of a sudden, dad pulled me down and said there was a deer right in front of us on the trail. I thought for sure he had lost his mind. Dad told me to move to my right, following his order, I saw that there was a buck facing us. He had his head down and was eating grass. I took aim, fired, the buck dropped down, and I immediately jumped up and shouted “I SHOT A BUCK”. Dad jumped up from the brush yelling in excitement. Dad hugged me and told me how proud of me he was. Seconds later, my buck got up and ran away. We knew it was a goner and we went back to the farmhouse to ask my uncle and sister for help dragging the buck back. That day, dad and I took so many photos that I never realized were so important until now. I'm grateful for the time spent with my dad and the lessons he taught me. No one can ever replace him. Love you dad, Hannah.
